A truly superb series of novels

This past year I began a reading project of the major vampire novels and stories, from John Polidori's THE VAMPYRE to Bram Stoker's DRACULA to Richard Matheson's I AM LEGEND to Theodore Sturgeon's SOME OF YOUR BLOOD to more recent works. I had previously read various novels, including the Anita Blake series, which started promisingly but not only never lived up to its initial promise but regressed to embarrassingly awful pornography. In August of this year I decided to read Charlaine Harris's vampire series, which was originally known as The Southern Vampire Mysteries but eventually became better known as the Sookie Stackhouse Novels.

Now, this is where the story gets odd. Completely independently of my reading project I had heard about and planned on watching Alan Ball's new series TRUE BLOOD. I was a huge fan of SIX FEET UNDER and was anxious to see how he would handle a series dealing with vampires. A few days after I had ordered the first four Sookie Stackhouse novels I learn to my great shock that Ball's new series was based on the very same novels. It is the most serendipitous coincidence in my life as a reader.

Because so many people have become aware of these books as a result of the TV series, a word about the differences between the two is in order. There are both definite similarities and some sharp differences between the two. The books focus much more on Sookie and less on the lives of the supporting characters, not surprising given that Sookie is the narrator in the novels. Sookie's narrative voice is for me one of the joys of the books and I miss that very personal perspective when I watch the TV series. The books are also far less sexual than the series, though there are several sex scenes (though it never descends to the pure porn found in the Anita Blake books). The series differs sharply from the books when it deals with characters other than Sookie. For instance, Tara in the books is a minor (and white) character. Jason plays a far smaller role. Just about everything touching Tara and Jason cannot be found in the novels. Sam and Tara are not involved. Without giving spoilers, Lafayette cannot be regarded as an important character in the books. On the other hand, Eric is as important as the other three main characters in the books, Sookie, Bill, and Sam. Still, based on all but the last 2 or 3 episodes of Season One of the TV show, Sookie's story there is pretty close to that is the first novel in the sequence.

The one huge advantage of the novels over the series is that there is just so much more that happens. Season One of the series corresponds to the first novel in the sequence. I expect that the TV show will begin to diverge from the novels in the second season. So I see no reason for anyone who enjoys the show not to plunge in and enjoy a whole string of new adventures in the life of Sookie Stackhouse, barmaid and telepath. What has delighted me is how consistently superb the novels are. I felt the second novel in the series, DEAD AND LIVING IN DALLAS, was a bit less entertaining than the second book, but all the rest in the sequence were increasingly excellent. And they all mesh to tell a unified story. One novel ends and the next picks up the story perhaps as little as two or three weeks later.

The novels also introduce new and more interesting supernatural characters. The Anita Blake novels did this as well, but I felt that that series was increasingly less successful. Both series introduce weres (were wolves, were tigers, were panthers, and others), witches, vampires from other locales, and fairies. But throughout it all Sookie remains both an innocent and an explorer.

All in all, this is one of the most enjoyable long series of novels that I know. My only real disappointment is that a date has not yet been announced for the next and ninth novel in the series. Charlaine Harris (who lives in the southern part of my native state of Arkansas) has a couple of other series and 2009 apparently is devoted to those. My hope is that perhaps the success of the TV show will cause Ms. Harris to revise her plans and bring out another Sookie Stackhouse sooner rather than later.

I will add that on some boards many fans of the books don't like Anna Paquin as Sookie. I do. She isn't quite the way the books describe Sookie, being slender and not at all voluptuous, whereas in the books Sookie is constantly described as curvy and very chesty. But I think Anna Paquin gets a lot of the spirit of Sookie. She feels in her performance very much like someone who has been traumatized by hearing the thoughts of others.

If you are a fan of TRUE BLOOD, you should definitely read these. I actually prefer the books to the TV show, though I like the show as well. But if you haven't watched the show, but enjoy well written book on supernatural themes, you should read these anyway. In the recent tradition of revisionist accounts of vampires, this is one of the best.

Great Escapism...

First off - if you are interested in the True Blood series on HBO - get these books and get this set. I was STRONGLY recommended to read these books after talking about the show by a friend who read them when they first came out. So I did...purchased one at a time. Boy do I wish I would have bought the set right off and then get the additional books later for I would have saved a bit of money and had a great way to keep all the books together and in great shape. Nevertheless, the books and show ARE different and yet both are worthy of reading/watching if you are into this genre of books. I have enjoyed both for various reasons, but for the books, I truly enjoy the narrative of Sookie through all her trials and tribulations of interacting with "special" characters. This is not a wannabe Anita Blake type of series, but very unique, exciting and often lighthearted...definitely not as dark! Harris has written these books in such a way to really draw one into them, sometimes even identifying with human emotions that is sometimes unexpected. Now I have all the paperbacks, without the boxed set container (sad), and am awaiting the next book in the series.

Plus I will continue to watch the show, knowing on what it is based and that I should not expect the same thing as I read in the books...yet knowing the same "flavor" will be retained. That makes for good reading and for good TV/movie adaptation.

Absolutely, Positively, in LOVE with this series

OK, so I ordered this set a few weeks back because I was trying to cure myself of the whole Twilight addiction. As I started the first book in the Sookie series I was beyond skeptical, and extremely judgmental. I compared everything to the Twilight series. However, by the time I completed the second book I was obsessively hooked. I proceeded to read the rest of the series, including books 8 and 9, in a matter of one week. I couldn't put them down! I can't believe I actually found a series that I enjoy better then Twilight! Absolutely addicting and stimulating.

Head-butted by the future

I've been discovering Stross' novels in highly non-chronological order. "Singularity sky" impressed the *beep* out of me with its combination of imagination and humor, and some of his other novels have also been very enjoyable.

But THIS one...this one goes a little beyond mere enjoyment.

SF writers are actually notoriously bad at accurately predicting the future. The danger is in extrapolating trends - "extrapolating" is roughly the same as "getting it wrong". So, no Soylent Green ("Make room, make room"), no eco-catastrophe (lots of novels from the 60s), etc.

Knowing that, an author has to work pretty hard to make us suspend our disbelief. Suspension of disbelief is not the same as hanging it by the neck until it's dead! Stross manages this so well in "Accelerando" it's frightening. He makes the impact on technology on human society, identity and consciousness totally believable. Of COURSE our consciousness is going to be decentralized, split between bits still running in the old wetware and bits running as external agents on other platforms. Of COURSE there's going to be a Singularity (and this is the most believable one I've read about yet). And of COURSE there's a perfectly societal response to all that.

The characters are still recognizably human, but sometimes just barely. One particularly well-written passage has one of the main characters lose his external computer support (disguised as a pair of specs) through which he was running many of his supplementary agents and programs. He is like a man with brain damage after that. He can still function, but his thought processes are..alien to us.

Stross is also very fond of casually tossing HUGE concepts into half a sentence during a conversation. I kept cracking up at his mention of what were essentially self-aware financial instruments - your options are coming to GET you!

This is a wonderful book. Dazzling, captivating, occasionally very funny and just a damn good read. Highly recommended. Hugo Award next year.

A great collection of stories in novel form

Charles Stross has written expansively on the concept of the Vingean Singularity, where the rate of technological advance increases so rapidly that the future cannot be foreseen. In Accelerando he charts the course of three generations of the Macx family before during and after the singularity.

The novel was originally a series of self contained short stories and is very episodic. As such, there is a series of events that are all resolved within the same chapter only to come unravelled at the start of the next. However, all the smaller story elements fit into a greater arc chronicling humanity's rapid rise, obsolescence and recovery.

Stross's writing is excellent, although computer literacy is a must. Indeed, this isn't an easy read but it is quite a ride and well recommended.

Explorations of the biggest questions - disguised as a novel

Charles Stross is a former pharmacist, former programmer and journalist, certified geek, and current full time writer. Most people would tag him as 'science fiction' writer. From what I've read of his journals, and especially his books, he's terribly bright and very imaginative.

Accelerando is one of his commercially successful books (scan it for free before you buy at accelerando.org). The amateur Amazon reviews are well done (one of the two 'professional' reviews is by someone who didn't read the book); I can't add much to them. The book does not fully succeed as a novel -- it was published as a series of short stories and it doesn't hang together all that well. There are some annoying plot holes (no security on the goggles? Did one of the lead characters flee to alpha centauri or commit suicide? Why is Pierre asking what happened - he was there?!), some dangling and overly fluid characters, and too many annoying synopses of 'what went before'. The writing itself is professional, and that's no mean trick, but the work would have needed a harsher editor and a complete rewrite to fly as a novel.

That's ok, because it's really a series of speculative essays disguised as a novel -- and the thinking is deep and creative. I thought I was being a bit whacky when I blogged about the spanish inquisition as a corporation, and the emergent sentience of corporations in the ecosystem of economic interactions, but Stross goes much, much further. He plays with the idea that at some point the relationship between finance wizard and financial instrument might be inverted, so that souls would be traded by sentient financial instruments. That's not bad; I can just about see how it might happen ...

The embedded essay I most enjoyed reading, however, is on one of my all-time favorite topics -- the Fermi Paradox. This is one of those conumdrums that bothers a very few people a great deal and is irrelevant to most of humanity.

In short, we ought by all rights, to be overrun by little green beings. The puzzle is that we appear to have much of the galaxy to ourselves. To the Fermi fan-boys this is the biggest question around, to which matters of theology or epistemology are merely academic.

The answer to the Fermi Paradox is most often expressed in the terms of the Drake Equation. The best bet is that something utterly inevitable ends all technological civilizations like our own in well under a thousand years. The most popular candidate for an "inevitable fate" over the past 23 years has been the Singularity (Greg Bear's 1982 short story 'Blood Music' is the earliest version of the Singularity theory I know of, Vernor Vinge developed the ideas extensively in the early 1990s.) Stross takes these ideas and pushes the boundaries. Why might a post-singular entity find travel unappealing? Why would it be hard for entities like us to live near such a beast -- even if it didn't spend any time thinking about us?

Reading Stross is like having an extremely bright and free thinking fellow over for a beer (or something, these UK writers seem fond of a range of substances). He tracks all over the place, the narrative doesn't always hang together, but it's a heck of a lot of fun -- and where else can a geek get his Fermi fix?

Naqi Okpik of "Turquoise Days" loses her sister Mina to the sentient ocean of the planet Turquoise. Naqi abandons her humanity, uniting with the ocean to find Mina and save their world from destruction. Spire and ocean are both artifacts of Revelation Space's alien Pattern Jugglers, who form a living gestaltinterstellar entity that in these brilliantly executed parables represents the vehicle for humanity's choice between self-immolation and evolution and the author's postulated solution to the riddle of Faustian man. About the Author
Alastair Reynolds was born in Barry, South Wales, in 1966. He studied at Newcastle and St. Andrew's Universities and has a Ph.D. in astronomy. A former astrophysicist for the European Space Agency, he lives in the Netherlands, near Leiden. He is now writing full-time.

Two Novellas in the Revelation Space series

In "Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days" Alastair Reynolds contributes two short novels to the Revelation Space oeuvre. They're minor additions, but fascinating in their way. "Diamond Dogs" is an homage to the good old "problem" sf tale in the best sense of the word. A team of explorers visits the "Blood Spire" on a desolate planet. The spire has chopped up and spit out the last team that arrived, and now Richard Swift et al. must try to solve its mystery. They enter a series of rooms one after another. To enter each room they must first solve a mathematical puzzle, which opens the door to the next. Failure to solve and they get chopped up, too. Literally. (Ew! Gross!) The editor--or somebody--should be chopped up and spit out, too. In a book that depends on mathematics, and written by an astrophysicist, it's embarrassing more than somewhat to discover that in this tale 2 isn't a prime number. I'm deducting a star from what would have been a four-star effort for that.

The impressionistically exciting "Turquoise Days" is perfect in every way. It gives us another look at the waterborne Pattern Jugglers. The world is Turquoise, which as we soon discover is mostly water. Two scientists, sisters, have an encounter with them. One returns; the other does not. Then things unforeseen happen, as we learn more about this mysterious world. But not everything. It's amazing how much character development the author brings to a tale that's only 130 pages long. It would be shameful to reveal anything more about the plot. Read this little gem yourself. Five stars.

A Good Twofer

Two side-journeys into the Revelation Space universe, so being familiar with all that helps. Diamonds Dogs is a bit sinister, demonic even. It caps to mind the classic sci-fi story Rogue Moon by Algys Budrys. Turquoise Days is less enigmatic, has a complete story arc, and is a nice complement to the first. Might even be a connection.

About the Author
John H. Lau received his PhD in theoretical and applied mechanics from the University of Illinois, an MASc in structural engineering from the University of British Columbia, a second MS in engineering physics from the University of Wisconsin, and a third MS in management science from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He also has a BE in civil engineering from National Taiwan University. John is an interconnection technology scientist at Agilent Technologies, Inc. His current interests cover a broad range of optoelectronic packaging and manufacturing technology.

Prior to coming to Agilent, Lau worked for Express Packaging Systems, Hewlett-Packard, Sandia National Laboratory, Bechtel Power Corporation, and Exxon Production and Research Company. With more than 30 years of R&D and manufacturing experience in the electronics, photonics, petroleum, nuclear, and defense industries, he has given over 200 workshops and invited presentations, authored and coauthored over 200 peer-reviewed technical publications, authored more than 100 book chapters, and is the author and editor of 14 books on IC packaging.

Lau has served on the editorial boards of "IEEE Transactions on Components, Packaging and Manufacturing Technology, " and "ASME Transactions, Journal of Electronic Packaging." He also has served as general chairman, program chairman, session chairman, and invited speaker at several ASME, IEEE, ASM, MRS, IMAPS, SEMI, and SMI International conferences. He has received many awards from the ASME and IEEE for best proceedings and transactions papers and outstanding technical achievements and is one of the distinguished lecturers of the ASME and IEEE/CPMT. He is an ASME Fellow and IEEE Fellow and is listed in "American Men and Women of Science" and "Who's Who in America."

C.P. Wong is a Regent's Professor at the School of Materials Science and Engineering and a Research Director at the NSF Packaging Research Center at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He received his BS in chemistry from Purdue University, and his PhD in chemistry from Pennsylvania State University with Nobel Laureate Professor Henry Taube.

Wong spent 19 years at AT&T Bell Labs and was elected a Bell Labs Fellow in 1992. His research interests lie in the fields of polymeric materials, reaction mechanism, IC encapsulation, hermetic equivalent plastic packaging, electronic packaging processes, interfacial adhesions, PWB, SMT assembly, and component reliability.

He has received many awards, among which are the AT&T Bell Laboratories Distinguished Technical Staff Award (1987), the AT&T Bell Labs Fellow Award (1992), the IEEE Components, Packaging and Manufacturing Technology (CPMT) Society Outstanding and Best Paper Awards (1990, 1994, 1996, 1998, and 2002), the IEEE Technical Activities Board (TAB) Distinguished Award (1994), the IEEE CMPT Society's Outstanding Sustained Technical Contribution Award (1995), the Georgia Tech Outstanding Faculty Research Program Development Award (1999) and many others.

Wong was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 2000, and he is a Fellow of the IEEE, AIC, and AT&T Bell Labs. He served as technical vice president (1990 and 1991) and president (1992 and 1993) of the IEEE-CPMT Society, the IEEE TAB Management Committee (1993 to 1994), and chair of IEEE TAB Design and Manufacturing Committee (1994 to 1996), the IEEE Nomination and Appointment Committee (1998 to 1999), and the IEEE Fellow Committee (2001-present).

I was reminded of Captain Mubbers and his crew by someone posting a message to a forum containing the word 'Ferkit'.

This is the last of the 'End of Time' trilogy and sews the story up very nicely.

As with The Hollow Lands, it is also hilarious sci-fi. The Hollow Lands is the best of the trilogy, but you cannot really review any single book by itself. It is a story spread over 3 books, none of which makes much sense without reading the other 2.

The almost perfect sci-fi story. Imaginative, original and very funny.

never in a million years could this book/series be made into a film!!!! the scenes where the characters change the scenery with their magic just to suit their fashion is simply amazing and Moorcock writes so imaginatively, you can shut your eyes and almost see the skies changing to pink and the mountains swirling about in patterns. The best thing about this book (as with any moorcock book) is that it is directly linked to all the other series (corum, elric, erekose etc etc) and reveals extra background information that explains a lot from the other books. The little latvians will make you laugh! To describe this book in one word.........colourful!!!

About the Author
Robert (Lynn) Asprin was born in 1946. While he has written some stand alone novels such as Cold Cash War, Tambu, The Bug Wars and also the Duncan and Mallory Illustrated stories, Bob is best known for his series: The Myth Adventures of Aahz and Skeeve; the Phule novels; and, more recently, the Time Scout novels written with Linda Evans. He also edited the groundbreaking Thieves World anthologies with Lynn Abbey. His most recent collaboration is License Invoked written with Jody Lynn Nye. It is set in the French Quarter, New Orleans where he currently lives.

Losing focus

The Thieve's World idea is a great one - get a collection of top story tellers to tell tales about a common location. Therefore there are rules to be followed and even common characters - but you get to see how each writer deals with the same ideas in their own, unique, and creative ways.

Unfortunately, this book is the weakest so far. In previous volumes, there was always a central focus or idea that made the collection a collection. Whether it was Vashanka the storm god, or curses and their effects, each of the stories hewed to that focus. In this volume that focus is lost.

At the end of the last book, a mysterious fleet appeared off the shore of Sanctuary. So, one would suppose that this volume would be all about the newcomers. How disappointing then to read all the stories and see those newcomers be very much in the background to almost not being mentioned in any story at all! Oh, we learn that they are called the Beysib ... and they are featured in a couple of entries ... but there is no mention of how they came to rule Sanctuary; why Kadakithis lets them do what they want (can you believe that they routinely conduct executions on city streets without the local government interfering in any way?); and what the rest of the empire may be doing about this invasion.

Instead we read about Tempus leaving; About Ischade and her moment of pity for a human being; etc. Now, don't get me wrong; some of the stories are very entertaining and enjoyable to read. But that's why I gave this book three stars rather than some lower rating!

Many of the characters from previous books return - although not all. In addition to the two I named above, your read a fun story about Lola the painter and his wife; Samlor the trade is back; Mradhon Vis makes an inexplicable return; Enos Yarl is more fully examined; and, of course, Hakiem appears in the Prologue to set the tone for the book. So, there are good stories here. The unfortunate part is that the book as a whole seems out of focus. Too bad.

One of the Better Thieves' World Books

This fifth volume in the Thieves' World series contains stories by Janet Morris, C.J. Cherryh, Asprin, Lynn Abbey, David Drake, and Diana Paxson - with Andrew Offut noticeably and thankfully absent. The stories range from the grotesquely gripping to the merely entertaining, and overall are more enjoyable than most of the previous Thieves' World books. The highlight is Paxson's "Mirror Image," which features the two only endearing characters in all of Thieves' World, the painter Lalo and his wife, Gilla. Lalo, you see, had been cursed/blessed. His portraits revealed the inner soul of the subject, not the exterior facade (thus his large, domineering wife appears as a goddess). In "Mirror Image," Lalo paints a self-portrait and the result is a very moving tale. Despite the false packaging (the "invasion" referenced in the title is hardly that, just an omnipresence of mysterious, powerful foreigners), The Face of Chaos is, perhaps, the first Thieves' World book I'd recommend without reservations.

A fun adventure

This fun book reads much like Robin Hobb's outstanding Farseer series; not quite as great but solidly above the mainstream nevertheless. All the elements of a great heroic fantasy are found within these pages. There is plenty of political intrigue, lots of captivating characters, rousing action, terrific pacing, and a solid albeit not horribly original plot. Tess, the heroine, is pretty believable as a somewhat spoiled princess who was tricked by her mentor Kavenlow into learning the skills necessary to escape Prince Garrett's evil clutches, outwit guard captain Jeck, and do what is necessary to survive as a royal decoy on the run. Were it not written in first person I doubt the author could have plausibly pulled all that off. Tess's level-headedness after the murder of her parents, the Misdev occupation, and her flight to freedom strikes the right balance to affirm her skills and potential without coming across as overdone or trite. I enjoy characters that rely more on their brains than their brawn and Tess has a charming way of finding practical uses for skills like shopping to as great extent as she does with blowguns and poison darts. She is quick-witted and alluring. Duncan, the card shark, makes a likeable sidekick/distraction. I really like the "players" concept too. It builds another level of intrigue and excitement.

Overall this is a fine fantasy. Not superlative, but very well worth reading nevertheless. I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel, Princess at Sea.

A Wonderfully Surprising Story

This is one of those books that gets better with every turn of the page. Although enjoyable to begin with, The Decoy Princess steadily became more intriguing the farther on I read. I was so wrapped up in the story that I simultaneously didn't want it to end, but couldn't wait to see how it concluded such that I had to force myself not to skip ahead.

The Decoy Princess is about Tess, the unwitting apprentice to a man who rules the kingdom so adeptly that not even the King and Queen realize they are merely pawns in his game. Although she is raised believing she is the Crown Princess, Tess must quickly adjust to her new circumstances when a neigboring Prince, her betrothed, betrays them all and attemps to take over her kingdom. Tess spends the book on the run to save her own life, the real Princess's life and the lives of all the people in her Kingdom. Dawn Cook does an amazing job developing Tess from self absorbed girl to a strong and resilient player in a very large game of chess. The Decoy Princess is a continually surprising book and a thoroughly satisfying read. I definitely recommend it.

I can't wait for the sequel

I really had no idea what this book was about when I bought it, I just liked the Truth series, so I figured I would like this one. I personally didn't really like the main character for the first bit of the book, nothing against the writing, but usually you expect to like the main character. Her character development is really wonderful in this book as you see how Tess grows and matures and learns to take responsibility. I like how she constantly says 'men are thieves' because she keeps getting her things stolen by men. It's a very good story, and it finishes well while still giving room for a sequel without leaving you in suspense until the next one comes out (in the summer 2006)!!

A child, later known as Rook, survives the massacre of his house to be rescued by bards and raised on a distant island, where he marries and settles down to a contented life. His only ties to the past are faint dreams that he tries to forget. Then the dreams turn into nightmares and the nightmares into violence. Rook must eventually visit the city of his birth to confront the destroyer of his house. The prose is lyrical, the themes of music and musicianship are woven into the story with great skill, basically archetypal characters and plot are brought to life with dozens of subtle touches, and McKillip's narrative technique is as her enthusiasts have come to expect. Maybe this is a trifle cerebral for some readers, yet surely they can admire the quality of McKillip's execution even if their emotions are not always fully engaged. Roland Green

Can Music Defeat Great Evil?

Patricia McKillip has few peers in writing fantasy fiction. Her stories unfold in such a way that you turn page after page, late into the night, and then reread one or two or more years later and still enjoy. The opening lines about the ash in the fireplace are haunting. I sometimes will reread those few paragraphs, again, even if I have just finished the book. The background is a land where several political families have ruled cooperatively only to have great injustice and imbalance brought by one family head's drive for power. The story follows the actions of a bard who is driven to know why he dreams of fire. Music is powerful and music is power in this land but it is not a simple thing nor easily wielded. There is graphic violence in the first chapter and death, suffering, and sorrow in several other places. Sexual activity is limited to expressions of feelings but no physicality or carnality. Considered YA (young adult), I, many decades past that, read McKillip's books with pleasure.

Another Marvelous Tale From Patricia McKillip

"The Book of Atrix Wolfe" remains for me the best work I have read by Patricia McKillip, and by comparison, this book does not quite measure up, at times being more dream-like in its exposition, not always clearly illuminating the basis for certain actions and resolutions. Nonetheless, the quality of dream contributes to much of the book's magic, combining with the author's rich prose and inimitable imagination to deliver a tale far superior to most other fantasy. And while not all the magic that takes place is clearly explained, as George R.R. Martin recently emphasized at one of his readings, magic retains its wonder through its causes and characteristics remaining partially hidden, otherwise becoming, through too clear an exposition, a mere reflection of science.
Similar to "Atrix Wolfe," and in some ways unlike the earlier "Winter Rose," McKillip returns here to meditations upon the meaning of words, while at the same time more fully exploring the secret powers of music first examined in the earlier "Riddle-Master" trilogy. These underlying themes follow a structure and tone more reminiscent of "The Book of Atrix Wolfe" than "Winter Rose," though the realm of faerie so prominent in the two former books are here barely hinted at. Instead, this tale is more archetypically fantasy, a tale of struggle between good and evil houses, revealed through the magical lyricism that has come to distinguish McKillip's work.
Those that have criticized a lack of emotional characterization I believe have missed a strong and metaphoric chord running throughout the work, as well as underestimated the significance of emotions shown through the subtle gestures and actions of the characters. While the inner dialogue found in "Winter's Rose" is absent, here it instead becomes fully realized in the nuances of the characters' actions: the assembling of a cage of mirrors by Luna, Damiet's fitful gestures, Caladrius' revelation of his character through the various guises he assumes and the instruments that he plays. While perhaps not as readily accessible as some of McKillip's earlier works, there is a richness of subtlety just as rewarding for those who read closely.
A marvelous book: one that will reward, as have all her recent works, repeated and additional reading. Though her tales may not offer ready appeal to those seeking swords and sorcery, there is little question that the author's works are among the few and very best that fantasy has to offer.

Brilliant and complex, must be savored rather than gobbled

I tend to read fantasy novels at a gallop, eager to see what new trick or monster pops out at me on succeeding pages. Reading a good fantasy is usually like watching a good magic show: one surprise after another. There is suspense and breathless anticipation that is quickly resolved by the next sleight-of-hand.
However, Patricia McKillip's novels are not like a conjuror's act. They make you work. They make you read slowly. Her clues are subtle and woven into the beautiful, but dense thicket of her text. This is especially true in "Song for the Basilisk". The novel is every bit as complex and beautiful as its jacket painting by Kinuko Craft, but sometimes it made me feel like one of the princes trapped in the rose thicket outside of Sleeping Beauty's castle. I wanted to follow the little boy Rook from his hiding place in the ashes, through his coming-of-age as a bard, to his eventual confrontation with the monster who destroyed his family. But it was hard. I kept getting hooked on the beautiful scenery, and the complex subplots, and the other intricately fashioned characters. The ancient, blind Reve Iridia and her haunting music, and Luna Pellior, the Basilisk's daughter, were such strong and interesting characters that they positively upstaged Rook/Caladrius/Griffin every time they appeared with him on the same stage.
"Song for the Basilisk" is definitely worth reading, and savoring, and rereading. My only advice to the reader who is new to Patricia McKillip, is to start with her "The Riddlemaster of Hed" trilogy, or "The Book of Atrix Wolfe". They are equally magical books, but more accessible.

Sparky Valentine is a former child star turned down-on-his-luck thespian who's just reached the grand old age of 100. Not that you could tell by looking at the old ham, who for some reason never seems to age--or stay out of trouble. Sparky's in the midst of a whirlwind theatrical tour designed to bring a bit of culture to the frozen desolation of the outer solar system when bad luck strikes in the form of a gumshoe hot on his tail. Sparky decides to skip the outer burgs for the more hospitable environs of Pluto, but things only get worse when he runs afoul of the notoriously unforgiving Charonese Mafia. As he's making his getaway, he learns something astonishing. The famous director Kaspara Polichinelli of Luna is planning a performance of King Lear, and he's short a lead to take on the title role. Sparky wires Polichinelli that he's interested, and Polichinelli tells him the part is his. Now all Sparky has to do is find a way to scrape together enough cash to get to Luna before the play starts while avoiding a seemingly unstoppable (and unkillable) Charonese hitman. --Craig E. Sparky Valentine grew up on stage. He'd memorized all of Shakespeare by age six and was the star of a hit TV show at eight. His father, actor John Barrymore Valentine, was famous throughout the solar system. But John was also an abusive monster who used torture to help his son learn his lines. Now, nearly a century later, Sparky, a rootless outcast, wanders the outer reaches of inhabited space, sometimes acting in legitimate theater, sometimes working small-scale con games. Although his acting skills are still well honed, virtually all of his theater work must be done under various stage names because he's wanted for a variety of crimes, some minor, some serious. Then two events change Sparky's life. First, he's given a chance to play Lear in a new production being mounted on Luna by the finest director in the solar system. Second, he finds himself the intended victim of an implacable, surgically enhanced professional killer. Fleeing the assassin and a number of local constabularies, risking his life to reach Luna and the opening of King Lear, Sparky little knows what revelations about his family's secrets await him. Hugo and Nebula winner Varley (Steel Beach) is not so much a writer of ideas as one of character; the gradually emerging portrait he offers here of an abuse survivor seems right on the money. There's a lot of humor in evidence too, and plenty of theatrical extravagance, but they're invariably tinged with the melancholy that infuses Sparky's life. Although a tad wordy (as one might expect of a book narrated by a Shakespearean actor), this is an engrossing novel by one of the genre's most accomplished storytellers.

Set in Varley's ongoing universe, with its gender-bending pioneering and aspects that would have been called cyberpunk had the term been invented when Varley first appeared, this latest effort by a fine but infrequent writer lives up to his high standards. It is the story of Sparky Valentine, a fugitive from justice who is traveling through the fringe settlements of the solar system as a member of a highly unorthodox Shakespearean troupe. His ability to change his appearance and gender is valuable for playing many roles and for keeping those on his trail from making his existence more precarious than it already is. A plot summary would do no more justice to this novel than to most of Varley's other work; he and conventional narrative technique are simply not on familiar terms. But the rich world building expected of him is here, and like William Gibson, if he ever took up action sf, several of its current masters would have to go to work for a living. Roland Green

Stardom Bred in Blood and Bne

The life of an itinerant actor stumping from village to town, dreaming of his own theatre in the big city translates well to space travel when John Varley writes it. His brilliant poly-named polymorphic main character is sometimes star and sometimes hobo, sometimes leading man (or leading lady) but more often bit player or street performer. "Sparky," "Dodger," and formally, "K.C.Valentine," is how this fellow refers to himself in his reminiscences. Because the tale is told almost entirely in first person, we must learn from those around him that he doesn't share his real name—or face—with anyone except his two constant sidekicks, Toby and Elwood.

Since Toby is a dog, and Elwood stays out of sight of everyone except Valentine, they aren't giving away his secrets.

So Valentine stays one step ahead of whatever bête noire chases him, equally ready to ride the twenty-second century equivalent of the rails as to travel in splendor on a luxury cruise line. He must adapt, chameleon-like, to each new community's standards, and be adroit with a bribe as he moves from world to world, for: "...the more bureaucrats there are, the more laws are needed to keep them fed."

By contrast, when he sleeps we hear from the troubled soul of this mountebank. We learn of his courage in the face of an abusive father and troubled childhood. And we begin to see why Valentine is determined to "play Lear," to build a grand Shakespearean theater in the asteroid belt. "...we didn’t have to play Shakespeare in free fall, as we’d done at Boondocks and several previous engagements. 'Friends, Romans, countrymen, throw me a tie-down!' Talk about your theater in the round."

This novel has a daunting physical and emotional scope, yet even so, the story does not feel heavy-handed. Valentine copes with the great talent and low support life has given him, and with the assistance of Toby and Elwood, stays as close to sane and happy as most men come. The tale ranges from high drama to low humor; it was never more clear that Shakespeare's claim in "As You Like It" was right: "All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts..."

Another Good Book

John Varley's "The Golden Globe" isn't exactly a sequel to "Steel Beach." It's sort of a follow on. Part of it takes place before and during the time of "Steel Beach," while most of it takes place afterwards. The vast majority of the book happens elsewhere, though. With that out of the way, it's still a good book. I think I prefer "Steel Beach" to it. But, it's a close call. "The Golden Globe" revolves far less around sex and the decadence of the society and more around one person and his flight from his own life. It's a big book and isn't exactly an easy read. But, still, it's worth the time. I rate it at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5.

Who'da thunk it.

I know. I can't believe it. I never thought I'd be giving John VARLEY one star. I mean, JOHN VARLEY! I've read Ophiuchi Hot line so many times that the pages are now held together with duct tape. But John Varley needs to take a long vacation from writing in first person because he just can't pull it off anymore without going off on these endless, self indulgent vents. The thing that made his earlier stories not just great reads, but great friends was his talent for creating characters who were both a product of their exotic environments, yet completely accessible. `Show, don't tell' is a challenge for all good SF writing but Varley always pulled it off. As you read his stories you were transported into his brilliantly imagined universe through the awareness and emotions of the characters in the stories. As the reader, you were flooded with new ideas, yet were given enough room to feel like you were discovering these convincing people and their extraordinary society. Even his less likable characters were capable of moving you. Unfortunately, The Golden Globe is narrated by a character who is so self involved, you can barely see past him into the story. Is there even a story? Why should I care about this guy? He's so boring. And annoying. He's like one of those people who comes up to you at a party after one too many drinks and starts to tell you an anecdote, and then gets side tracked telling you about how smart they are, and how stupid everybody else is, and how much they know, and on and on and on and on until you just want to scream, "Get OVER yourself and get to the POINT!" There's no room in this story for the reader. I am so disappointed but I'm not giving up. I'll check out Varley's next book (well, I'll check it out of the library) because eventually all the momentum of his earlier writing has got to push him past this phase.
