From Publishers Weekly
In this sequel to The Demons at Rainbow Bridge , all intelligent species in the galaxy retain a racial memory of evil beings: horned, red-eyed and cloven-hoofed. Responding to rumors that demons have been found, the nonhumanoid races, each belonging to three warring empires, send ships to investigate. While fighting with the other groups, the half-dozen members of each race chase a pair of devils through a multidimensional maze that bears a striking resemblance to Dante's Hell, down to the "Abandon All Hope . . . " sign over a gate. As Chalker repeats each encounter three times--once per group--the reader's interest fades quickly.

From School Library Journal
YA-- A well-written, action-packed sci/fi adventure. In Demons at Rainbow Bridge (Ace, 1990), alien creatures bearing an uncanny resemblance to the devil were released from stasis by overzealous scientists. Now the demons, hellbent on galactic domination, are pursued through an interdimensional maze by specialized teams from each of three warring empires. This is Chalker at his entertaining best, creating unique universes peopled with fascinating aliens and diverse human cultures. Complexity of plot, however, combined with a large number of characters may cause confusion for some YAs. Like cliffhangers of a bygone era, Chaos Keep ends amidst conflict, leaving readers anticipating the next installment. --John Lawson, Fairfax County Public Library, VA
Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
The second in yet another multivolume work of action-based sf from Chalker. In book #1, a curious structure was found on an uninhabited remote world containing (in some sort of suspended animation) a pair of what could only be described as demons--nasty, taloned, horned beings that figure not only in Earth cultures but in nearly every society in the three galactic empires: the Exchange, the Mycohl, and the Mizlaplan. Accidentally awakened, the demons brutally slaughtered the scientific team sent by the Exchange to study them. Here, small rescue teams from each of the empires arrive. Fighting each other, fearing the demons, and trapped together in the erstwhile tomb, they take the only way out, pursuing the monsters through an interdimensional gate. Competent pulp adventure, but beyond the fast-paced action, there isn't much. Chalker's prose is clumsy, his characters mostly one-dimensional, and, for all their outward differences, the aliens speak and behave altogether too much like their human companions. Passing nods to Dante's Inferno do little to raise the literary stakes. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Involving sci-fi with incredible world building
By Judah
This is book two in the Quintara Marathon, and you should read "The Demons at Rainbow Bridge" first, and then follow this novel with "The Ninety Trillion Fausts."

Having broken free of their ancient imprisonment, a pair of Quintara make the three empires stop and notice their ancient enemies have returned. The Mizlaplan (fanatics of the Cosmic All), the Mycholians (parasites who control other lifeforms), and the Exchange (ruthless capatalists) all send teams in an effort to stop the Quintara.

As the teams compete against and cooperate with each other on the journey to Chaos Keep, where the ancient seals that imprison the Quintara reside, they must survive the million ancient traps on the way.

This gripping science fiction novel keeps up a good pace and further develops the characters introduced in the first book. The danger and inner conflicts make it well worth reading. If you read book one, buy it... the story gets better!

SPECIAL 20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION —THE MOST IMPORTANT AND INFLUENTIAL SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL OF THE PAST TWO DECADES

Twenty years ago, it was as if someone turned on a light. The future blazed into existence with each deliberate word that William Gibson laid down. The winner of Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick Awards, Neuromancer didn't just explode onto the science fiction scene—it permeated into the collective consciousness, culture, science, and technology.

Today, there is only one science fiction masterpiece to thank for the term "cyberpunk," for easing the way into the information age and Internet society. Neuromancer's virtual reality has become real. And yet, William Gibson's gritty, sophisticated vision still manages to inspire the minds that lead mankind ever further into the future.

Amazon.com Review
Here is the novel that started it all, launching the cyberpunk generation, and the first novel to win the holy trinity of science fiction: the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award and the Philip K. Dick Award. With Neuromancer, William Gibson introduced the world to cyberspace--and science fiction has never been the same.

Case was the hottest computer cowboy cruising the information superhighway--jacking his consciousness into cyberspace, soaring through tactile lattices of data and logic, rustling encoded secrets for anyone with the money to buy his skills. Then he double-crossed the wrong people, who caught up with him in a big way--and burned the talent out of his brain, micron by micron. Banished from cyberspace, trapped in the meat of his physical body, Case courted death in the high-tech underworld. Until a shadowy conspiracy offered him a second chance--and a cure--for a price....

It's colorful inside a computer.
By Melanie D. Typaldos
I am reading the Nebula Award winning novels in chronological order. This is the winner for 1985.

I didn't like it but I didn't hate it.

It's full of detailed, but repetitive, scenes of life when you mentally get inside computer systems. These images, while fanciful, are completely off the wall. Maybe it's that the book is showing its age. The world is extremely violent to the point where they could be no structured society. Nobody thinks, you know, maybe I shouldn't kill that person.

There were several times when I thought, okay, it's over. But it wasn't. It kept going on with more of the same.

I was not able to identify with any of the characters, nor did I see their personalities develop.

These Nebula Award winners are a mixed bag. Some are great. Some are awful. This was slightly to the awful side.

Incredible imagination, incredible writing.
By Smiling Hotei
This book popularized a new genre - cyberpunk. Although Gibson may not have been the first to explore the cyberspace world (e.g., Brunner, Vinge, and others) he entered with a splash, or perhaps a tsunami. What is most ironic is that Gibson wrote Neuromancer on a typewriter, not being a computer user.

The opening line of Necromancer is often cited as an example of creative writing. Rather than opening with "It was a dark and stormy night" Gibson introduces us to his world with, "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel."

""It's not like I'm using," Case heard someone say, as he shouldered his way through the crowd around the door of the Chat. "It's like my body's developed this massive drug deficiency." It was a Sprawl voice and a Sprawl joke. The Chatsubo was a bar for professional expatriates; you could drink there for a week and never hear two words in Japanese...."

Welcome to the Sprawl...

The book that started it all.
By kittybot
What can one say about the book that started cyberpunk? Well, probably not much about it starting cyberpunk, as Gibson notoriously hates the term. But this is a complete masterpiece. Thrilling, inventive, emotionally gripping, thought-provoking, grittier than reality ever was, and just plain cool to boot. I read Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash as my first foray into the genre termed 'cyberpunk' (and have since re-read it many times, as I'm sure I'll do with Neuromancer) and decided I had to see the start of it all. I wasn't disappointed and I would highly recommend this for any fan of technology, hacking, body modification, virtual reality, politics, science fiction, futurism, any sort of punk, mind-bending, or exciting stories of any kind. Do yourself a favor and read this if you haven't already; do yourself a favor and reread it if you have.

A decent anthology, yet highly politically motivated
By A Customer
Now, I'm not saying that Mirrorshades was bad. Not only did it contain one of the most definitive PR essays on cyberpunk (Sterling's introduction) but it also conains some very good stories. On the other hand, it could have been much, much, MUCH better.
Bruce Sterling, who edited Mirrorshades and similarly hand-picked the stories, clearly has his own agenda to the particular stories...at least, in some cases. Sterling assembled this almost as if it were an extension of his short-run newsletter, Cheap Truth (which he wrote under an assumed name of Omniveritas). In Cheap Truth, he attacked the existing science-fiction structure. He continues this trend in Mirrorshades.
The clearest example would be his choice of Gibson short work. Of the possible short stories, he picked The Gernsback Continuum and Red Star, Winter Orbit. Gernsback Continuum is, simply, not cyberpunk. It is Gibson's attack on Gernsbackian science fiction (Hugo Gernsback was really to blame for the "fantastic" science-fiction which used amazing gadgetry and no actual ideas). Sterling's view of the Movement (cyberpunk lit) was to erase the old Gernsbackian sf and replace it with real life rather than daydreams, so he picked this story as Gibson's contribution. This is absurd. The definitive cyberpunk short story is Burning Chrome. It is clear that Sterling chose to further his own political ends as opposed to providing a good overview-the best of the best-of cyberpunk fiction.
I could also have done without Sterling's final story, Mozart with Mirrorshades. This was, of course, an attempt to weave in the token item of the genre, the mirrored sunglasses. Sterling would have been much better off to include one of his Shaper-Mechanist stories, especially Spider Rose or Swarm. These stories are much better realized-and much more cyberpunk-than his choice. I would also have liked to see a more appropriate Rucker story...Rucker is great, but Tales of Houdini just wasn't appropriate.
Still, there are some great stories in here. Cadigan, Shirley, Shiner, Bear, Maddox, and others all contribute great works. If anything, Mirrorshades should be a starting point; find authors you like here, and then read the really groundbreaking stuff by them; John Shirley's Eclipse trilogy, everything by Gibson, Bear's Blood Music, Cadigan's Synners, Mindplayers, and Tea from an Empty cup, Rucker's Software trilogy, Sterling's Schismatrix, Maddox's Halo, and so forth.
However, if you want to simply read good cyberpunk short fiction, get the short story collections by the individual authors. As I said before, this is just a jumping-off point.

A necessary primer for understanding the "cyberpunk" genre..
By A Customer
Mirrorshades offers a host of short stories that not
only give a good read but will acquaint you with the very
beginnings of the cyberpunk genre. Included is "Johnny Mnemonic", the short story story that was the inspiration for
a somewhat disappointing film adaptation in 1995.
The crowning jewel of the collection is "Mozart in
Mirrorshades" by Sterling himself. Picture Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart ("...call me Wolf, okay?") writing pop music, time
travel to paralell universes, mongol warriors on Harleys,
Thomas Jefferson catching the hypersonic VTOL to discuss oil
drilling in Texas, and Marie Antoinette in a leopard skin

Pretty good collection
By Babytoxie
This is a collection of short stories by authors associated with the "cyberpunk movement" within the science fiction field. I enjoyed the book overall, but I wouldn't necessarily call this a representation of cyberpunk. In fact, three of the stories to me (and more among others) absolutely do not qualify as such, and two of them actually seem to be more rooted in the fantasy field than anything else. However, it's a good read, definitely worth it for the stories by Willam Gibson, both solo and collaborative. Interestingly, my favorite was "Petra" by Greg Bear, which is one of the fantasies I referred to: a very original idea and superbly written.
One final thing: if someone understands "Tales of Houdini", please contact me and explain. I just don't get it!

Three high school students formed the Galileo Club to share their interests in science and space exploration. But they never imagined they would team up with a nuclear physicist to construct and crew a rocket bound for the moon.

And they never expected to gain some powerful enemies in the process.

From the Publisher
Like many people, I go way, way back with Heinlein. My very favorite book (and one that stands out in my mind--and with much affection--to this day) is Tunnel in the Sky. I really, really wanted to go off to explore new worlds with a covered wagon and horses, like the hero does at the very end of the book. But one of the nice things about Robert Heinlein is that he's got something for everyone. One of my best friends has a different favorite: Podkayne of Mars. Go figure.
                        --Shelly Shapiro, Executive Editor

From the Inside Flap
They called themselves the Galileo Club -- not a bad name for a group of space-minded young men who had high hopes of putting one of their homemade rocket ships in orbit.
But it wasn't until they teamed up with Doc Cargraves that their impossible dream became an incredible reality. Suddenly the three Earthbound youths and their mentor were hurtling through space, heading for the barren wasteland of the Moon. Or so they thought.
They were totally unaware that the dark crater shadows concealed a threat beyond their wildest imaginings . . . a threat from which only a mircale could save them!

About the Author
Robert A. Heinlein (1907 1988) is widely recognized as one of the greatest science fiction authors of all time, a status confirmed in 1974 when the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America gave him their first Grand Master Award for lifetime achievement. A four-time Hugo Award winner, Heinlein is best known for works including Starship Troopers, The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, and the sensational bestseller Stranger in a Strange Land.

Spider Robinson, winner of three Hugos and a Nebula, was born in the Bronx and raised on Long Island, and has been a Canadian resident for 30 years. Holder of a bachelor's degree in English from the State University of New York, he worked as a folksinger and journalist before publishing his first story in "Analog "in 1973. He now lives with his wife Jeanne Robinson (co-author of the Hugo- and Nebula-winning Stardance trilogy) on an island outside Vancouver, B.C., where they raise and exhibit hopes.

Eleven of his 31 books are set in Callahan's Place, a fabulous tavern founded by a time traveler, where puns flow as freely as beer, and smell far worse. The most recent is" Callahan's Con" [Tor July 2003]. He has contributed a regular editorial column, "Future Tense," to Canada's national newspaper, " The Globe & Mail", since 1995. In 2000, he released Belaboring the Obvious", "a CD of original music with the legendary Amos Garrett ("Midnight at the Oasis") on lead guitar, and in 2001 he was a celebrity judge at the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam.

Heinlein's 1st juvenile novel, basis for "Desitination Moon"
By R. Christenson / Lunamation
This was Heinlein's first novel published in book form, and the first in his excellent "juvenile" series which included Space Cadet, Time For The Stars, Starman Jones, The Star Beast, Tunnel In The Sky, etc., and it is still my all-time favorite. Heinlein manages to make believable the tale of a scientist (Dr. Cargraves) organizing three 18-year-old boys of a rocket club to build a nuclear powered moon rocket. If you have an interest in space travel you'll get sucked in and won't put the book down until it's over, no matter how dated and unlikely the premise at first appears. It is written with Heinlein's usual skill (that earned him four Hugo awards), and the characters are easy to identify with, especially for any young space enthusiasts. This was also the basis for the 1950 classic film Destination Moon, although about all that remains unchanged in the film is the name Dr. Cargraves. In the book there is a veiled threat from unknown enemies that turn out to be Nazis (this was the first thing Heinlein wrote after the war) - in the film there's just a veiled reference to a communist threat. I suspect the film also draws from Heinlein's more sophisticated treatment from the same period, The Man Who Sold The Moon.
On 6 October 1988, after Robert Heinlein's death, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded him the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal:
"In recognition of his meritorious service to the Nation and mankind in advocating and promoting the exploration of space. Through dozens of superbly written novels and essays and his epoch-making movie Destination Moon, he helped inspire the Nation to take its first step into space and onto the Moon." -- James C. Fletcher, Administrator, NASA
No true Heinlein fan should be without an original Scribner's hardcover edition of Rocket Ship Galileo, with the same cover and illustrations as the first edition.

I LOVE Heinlein!
By J. Ferris
I really like Heinlein's juvenile novels for the entertaining way he explains the physics of space travel. The cover art on this one makes it desirable as well. This was not my favorite book of his but it was the 1st (not counting "We the Living" since it wasn't published until much later.) The story was somewhat topical in 1947 since he included a Nazi plot to take over the Earth by using the Moon as a military base. This was also an era when rockets & space travel were gaining a lot of importance. It's still a great read for kids today & for the occasional childish adult!

Toward a Psychology of Being (An Insight Book), by Abraham Harold Maslow

This book is a continuation of my Motivation and Personality, published in 1954. It was constructed in about the same way, that is, by doing one piece at a time of the larger theoretical structure. It is a predecessor to work yet to be done toward the construction of a comprehensive, systematic and empirically based general psychology and philosophy which includes both the depths and the heights of human nature. The last chapter is to some extent a program for this future work, and serves as a bridge to it. It is a first attempt to integrate the "health-and-growth psychology" with psychopathology and psychoanalytic dynamics, the dynamic with the holistic, Becoming with Being, good with evil, positive with negative. Phrased in another way, it is an effort to build on the general psychoanalytic base and on the scientific-positivistic base of experimental psychology, the Eupsychian, B-psychological and metamotivational superstructure which these two systems lack, going beyond their limits. It is very difficult, I have found, to communicate to others my simultaneous respect for and impatience with these two comprehensive psychologies. So many people insist on being either pro-Freudian or anti-Freudian, pro-scientific-psychology or anti-scientific-psychology, etc. In my opinion all such loyalty-positions are silly. Our job is to integrate these various truths into the whole truth, which should be our only loyalty.

Being vs Becoming
By psychiatric nurse
Challenging read for someone not too familiar with psych jargon, but very managable for anyone with a few psychology courses under his or her belt. This book will definitely assist one in their endeavors to define self-actualization on a personal/internal level. I feel that after a deliberate reading I personally gained some insight about my true nature. Maslow does an outstanding job of clarifing for the reader what it is like to veiw the world as its own ends versus the means. He helps define how living a life of being differs from a life of becoming. Good book, I highly recommend it to anyone in a counselling profession or one seeking philisophical enrichment.

2011 Edition of Toward a Psychology of Being
By Michael Hall
Do not buy the 2011 Edition of "Toward a Psychology of Being" --- it is an edited edition and leaves out much of Maslow's actual words. I did not know it was an abrieved edition ... and am very, very disappointed in this edition. It has reduced the quality and richness of Maslow's original work.

Discovering this book back in the 1960s changed my life and led me into the field of first, Humanistic Psychology and then into Transpersonal Psychology, where I found my life-work and purpose.
Read it, and if you are searching for some real meaning in your life, you will find the beginning of the way. Then read all the books in the list of references, and that will be even better!
It opens up a whole new world!

From Library Journal
Abandoned on the planet Botany by their Catteni masters, a group of humans and other enslaved races now seeks to reclaim their worlds for themselves. This third installment of a series that includes Freedom's Landing (LJ 4/15/95) and Freedom's Choice (LJ 5/15/97) chronicles the stages of the war for liberation, from the theft of Catteni ships to the liberation of cargoes of slave laborers to a bold strike at the heart of the oppressor. McCaffrey excels as a storyteller and as a creator of worlds. Despite an occasional lapse in suspense, her latest novel provides a satisfying culmination to a saga of desperate courage and the desire for freedom. Most libraries should add this to their sf collections.

Another rousing episode, perhaps the last, in McCaffrey's saga, begun in Freedom's Landing (1995) and continued in Freedom's Choice , about the colonists on the planet Botany. Botany is now under attack by the Eosi, who are unable to penetrate the planet-surrounding Bubble constructed by the advanced race that had given permission for the colony to remain on the planet. Kris Bjornson, who was with the first group dumped on the planet by the Eosi-dominated Cattani forces, is one of the settlement's leaders, as is her lover, the insurgent Cattani, Zainal. Having built a new home for themselves, the settlers decide it is time to contact dissidents on the various Eosi-controlled worlds and wage a war of liberation. Since the Botany settlers possess stolen technology, including Cattani warships, they are able to rescue other victims of the Eosi and bring them to Botany. Kris and Zainal lead a small band, all disguised as Cattani, to the Cattani home world on the first sortie to enlist Cattani rebels in the battle. The action is fast paced and riveting, and the characters, human and of other species, are well limned and exhibit great individuality. McCaffrey continues to amaze with her ability to create disparate, well-realized worlds and to portray believable humans, convincing aliens of varied sorts, and credible interactions between them all. A very satisfying tale. Sally Estes

From Kirkus Reviews
Third in McCaffrey's series (Freedom's Landing, 1995; Freedom's Choice, 1997) about planet Botany and its diverse population of humans and aliens, including ex-Earth Girl Kris Bjornsen and her aristocratic, renegade Cattani lover, Zainal. The Earth, you see, has been conquered by the catlike Cattani, but the Cattani are themselves dominated by the parasitic alien Eosi. Intended as a do-or-die prison colony, the Botanists have freed themselves from Cattani domination, aided in part by the planet's alien landlords, the Farmers, powerful but benevolent beings who've screened the planet from Cattani spacecraft. Now, Kris, Zainal and the others have ambitions to liberate Earth from the Cattani and the Cattani from the Eosi. McCaffrey provides a useful plot recap, and this entry--somewhat more conclusive than its predecessors--offers proven allures for series fans. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. A Series of Successes
By Christopher Dudley
In this third volume of the Freedom trilogy, Anne McCaffrey closes all the loose ends she'd left open in the previous two volumes, effectively ending the series. As a whole, the series was interesting, and throughout the three books, I felt for the characters, and wanted to know what they'd do next. It was a step-by-step detailed description of how a small group of exiles built a home on a planet that was initially hostile to them. In the context of being a series ending, the book is satisfying. The colonists finally realize success after so long and hard an endeavor. But when viewed by itself, this book contained only the successes, and none of the real hardships.

The entire book passes by with very little challenge to the colonists of Botany. It was an interesting logistical inventory for setting up a successful colony, but there's no real conflict. Just about everything they attempt works out, often better than they'd expected. About halfway through the book, I was sure something would finally go wrong, but it never did. Some of the successes were ridiculously easy. Some were at the very least, improbable. The humans on Botany were able to disguise themselves as Catteni with a little makeup and prosthetic cheekbones. This disguise was somehow able to fool real Catteni even after prolonged interaction. I found this a little bit unlikely.

As an ending to the series, it was adequate. But to make it a good installment in a trilogy, the author really should have included more conflict and story. The last book could have ended "And they lived happily ever after" and no real plot points would have been lost. Still, the writing style is enjoyable, and I already liked the characters enough to see what happened next. The same favorites are back in this book, and the story such as it is moves along with good pacing. On that merit alone, the book earns three stars.

If you enjoyed the first two, you should read this one.
By KGwenJ@aol.com
Of the three books in this series, this was undoubtably the worst. I greatly enjoyed the first two, and certainly do not think that my reading of the third book was a waste of time . . . but I think perhaps Ms. McCaffrey was a bit hasty in ending this storyline. She didn't have her usual depth in resolving the plots. The characters were also not as fully developed as I've come to expect from this marvelous author.

Was this the synopsis before the actual book?
By A Customer
As a devoted reader of Anne McCaffrey I couldn't wait to find out what happened with the Botany people. I was very disappointed to find out that the book tells the story in such a general fashion, and in such broad notions, that no depth is created. I always loved Anne McCaffrey's books for their characters' depth. Since she has given a lot of information and details in the Pern series, I expected that to reflect in other works. It was not. The character of Zainal is shallow. There is no info on the way he thinks, feel, or even why he is doing what he is doing. And if you do not like to know that, but just like the action of the book - well, not much there either. The story is what I would tell a friend if asked what the book is about. It is general, without the details that are expected. It gives the basics of actions taken, without giving information about the actions themselves. If you read other works of science fiction or fantasy, such as another favorite of mine Rober Jordan, you immediately see a difference. In the Wheel of Time series, for example, the characters come to life and the story is complete without gaps. I really regret to write this about this book, as I truly like the writing of Anne McCaffrey, and plan to continue reading her books.

From Publishers Weekly
This thought-provoking sequel to 2004's The Runes of Earth opens with a bang. Watching from the battlements of Revelstone, a keep besieged by the power-hungry Demondim, battle-weary healer Linden Avery can see both Thomas Covenant and her son, Jeremiah, riding ahead of a wave of pursuers-even though Covenant, her former lover, is dead and mind-damaged Jeremiah has been captured by Lord Foul the Despiser. Odder still, both men treat her almost disparagingly when they reach the keep, forbidding her to touch them and showing no signs of affection. Soon it becomes clear that nothing is what it seems. Avery's fight to save the Land from Lord Foul will take her to the Land's past through the worst kind of betrayal and across its length, but the worst enemy she faces is her self-doubt. Difficult but worthwhile, this complicated and emotional continuation of the Thomas Covenant saga is exactly what Donaldson's fans have been hoping for. (Oct.)

From Booklist
The second volume (after The Runes of the Earth, 2004) of the final Thomas Covenant tetralogy takes place entirely in the Land, to which Linden Avery has gone in search of her missing autistic son, whom she finds, completely cured and even outspokenly brash, in the company of a hale and hearty Thomas Covenant. The hitch, however, is that they now must find a hidden store of Earthpower, after which Linden may have to choose between using it to return herself and her companions to Earth, health, and happiness or to save the Land from its enemies. Donaldson maintains his propensity for forcing his female characters to jump through flaming hoops, but here the women are more modest, at least physically. Linden's dilemmas and choices are less athletic and more of the ethical variety. Should saving her son, now of sound though rebellious mind, override her duties to the still direly periled Land? The time it takes her, with some counsel from Thomas, to reach a compromise solution and to attempt to carry it out involves much pace-slowing angst, even if it further develops Linden's status as the new saga's real protagonist. The ending is the kind of cliff-hanger that should have readers returning to see how it and the remaining adventures play out. Green, Roland

Exceeds expectations
By Christian Belmont
It took me a week... life gets in the way... but I finally finished FR last night.

While I was not disappointed with ROTE (4 stars), reading it I felt the same degree of strangeness as I did after beginning The Wounded Land so many years ago. SRD does this, of course - we want to expect more of the same, but he turns the tables on us by unmaking a lot of what has gone before. The result, after you deal with this uncomfortable self-imposed barrier that comes with the implications of new situations, is so much more. Any shock and reluctance turns to realization and awe. ROTE was an excellent novel, yet I had to come to terms with the fact that it was an introduction to what appears to be an impressive third act. It is with FR that we discover the depth and implications of what I can only hope will continue to be an incredible story.

How can it be that after 8 volumes of dedication to the same mythology it can still feel fresh and new. The writing is better - a lot happens in this book - in that it is more efficiently focused and well paced, improving on already literary standards. The same themes are present as in the past volumes, but the implications are far deeper and more disturbing. I will not discuss any plot elements, there is no need to expand in this regard here (details can be obtained elsewhere). Suffice it to say true fans of the series will recognize and appreciate classic Donaldson elements. They will not be disappointed.

I did want to dedicate a paragraph to a particular criticism I have read regarding this series and other works from SRD over the years, not necessarily only here, but also in other sites. To those who complain about SRD's love affair with his thesaurus to the detriment of readability: get over it - and learn. If the style does not appeal to you, stop reading. But don't criticize and justify by saying (in a round about way) that you are not willing to make the effort. Many started reading TC when they were very young (and limited in vocabulary), and somehow could still immerse themselves in a great story. Other criticisms are, in my opinion, far more open to subjectability and have to do with personal tastes in storytelling, but it offends me when any author is sometimes brazenly criticized for choosing a style which should raise our level of literacy, if only we are willing to make an effort

To conclude: amazing new installment. The knot in your stomach on reading the cliffhanger at the end is something that I welcome, and kind of wish would not go away.

Classic Stephan R. Donaldson
By C. S.
If you've read the other books in the Thomas Covenant series, then you probably won't pay attention to the reviews and read the book anyway. I just wanted to leave my praise in a public forum because I have every book this author has written and will most likely buy any book he ever publishes. His writing style keeps me on my toes and he is not afraid to do shocking things with his characters. I am continually astonished chapter after chapter of how unafraid Donaldson is of harming his beloved characters. My only wish was that he could write faster. A new Covenant book every 3 years is just too long to wait!

Circle at Center: Book I of The Seven Circle Trilogy (Seven Circles), by Douglas Niles

With his acclaimed Watershed Trilogy from Ace--and his phenomenally successful "Dragonlance" series from TSR--Douglas Niles became one of the most promising stars of epic fantasy adventure. Starlog magazine raved that Niles "writes so well that his characters come to life after only a few sentences." Now this gifted storyteller has created a rich and complex new trilogy filled with centaurs, goblins and trolls, druids, elves, and other fantastic beings who live in a world of peace--until now...

In the realm of the Seven Circles, harmony has reigned since time immemorial. That is about to change....Disaffected members of all the races are gathering into a force that may spell the doom of the Seven Circles. Strangers to brutality and warfare, the inhabitants need a champion who can teach them to defend themselves. For this, they recruit warriors from a world where only the strong survive. A primitive world where life lasts only as long as you can fight for it...

A world called Earth.

"Absolutely nobody builds a more convincing fantasy realm than Doug Niles." --R.A. Salvatore, New York Times bestselling author.
