Excellent step forward in the series

The writing style of Frank Herbert is unique in the extreme, which is what draws me back to his novels time and again. God Emperor Dune is a remarkable novel in that it twists plots into one melting pot designed by Leto II (the God Emperor). His Golden Path will not be denied and Leto knows what he must endure to ensure that humanity does not vanish from the galaxy. Duncan Idaho makes a remarkable return as does the Atreides blood line that Leto II has been manipulating for more than 3000 years. It is this manipulation that allows the Golden Path to continue and bring about certain traits that Leto II knows must thrive in order for humans to continue to exist. It is a startling realization in the extreme, when Leto II decides to take a wife and realizes that his Golden Path will be achieved before his wedding. What a concept! Excellent novel. Also, this novel REQUIRES that you continue on to Heretics of Dune. I can't wait to read that....again!

Easily the slowest of the Dune novels, yet profoundly deep and satisfying. Leto II is basically a god and the novel steps inside his head and convincingly explains to us what it might be like to be a god who can see the future. The ending is sad but explosive and leaves hope for the future of the Golden Path.
The quality and depth of the dialogue and thoughts spoken aloud in this book are simply unbelievable. Herbert covers religion, philosophy, human nature, government, and a whole host of other controversial topics. Tthe vast majority of other sci-fi authors can't even touch, let alone match, Herbert's genius in these topics.

According to an ancient prophecy, Merlin will perish in the battle, but he persists with the help and hindrance of a varied cast of characters. To make matters worse, he seems to have lost his magic. Still, he perseveres. There are no surprises here, but that is precisely what will appeal to fans of the series. Sometimes the prose is overwritten in an attempt to sound properly grave and ends up reading a little like a parody of the genre, but the constant action and flow from one predicament to another keep the story going. Because the frequent references to prior events will confuse those who haven't read the previous titles, this book is best read in conjunction with the others.

A really, really great book!

this book gives another level of understanding Merlin a littie bit more.I've also read the other two books in this series, but I think this one is a must read for fantasy lovers(Ialso think you should read the other ones in order before you read this one).I can't wait to read The Mirror of Merlin.I like the way this book explians why everyone is trying to kill him or give him to the dragon.This book ,and all of the rest of The Lost Years of Merlin books,always explian whats going on so you arent left in the "dust".

Fiery "Merlin"

The ancient dragon Valdearg was briefly introduced in T.A. Barron's "Seven Songs of Merlin." So guess what the antagonist of "The Fires of Merlin" is!

The third volume of this Arthurian fantasy epic introduces some nasty new beasties, magical threats and some explosive dragon action. Barron seems to have overcome his initial roughness, and allows the plot to flow as smoothly as his nature-based writing, as well as the introduction of some interesting new characters.

After barely saving his mother's life, Emrys Merlin is relaxing with his family... only to have their peace destroyed when a monstrous magic-sucking monster called a kreelix appears. They were supposedly extinct, but have somehow reappeared -- and to make matters worse, Valdearg (aka "Wings of Fire") has awakened from his slumber, and is on the warpath for whoever killed his hatchlings.

The problem is that there is a prophecy that Wings of Fire's clash with his old enemy (presumed to be a wizard) will result in both of them dying. So Merlin sets out to discover what is happening on "Fincayra's darkest day," and finds himself enmeshed with strange sorceresses, a magical conspiracy, a pair of deer-people, and eventually with the ancient dragon himself...

"The Fires of Merlin" sets aside the foresty Celtic symbolism of the previous two books, in favor of fire -- harps burn, lava burns, dragons blast fire, and homicidal anger rages out of control. He also seems to have exhausted his mythological store for the moment, because most of the magical goings-on in this book are pretty original creations.

Barron's writing sometimes gets a bit overlush, but it's loaded down with haunting, detailed moments (the deer-people's transformations), eerie threats, and the occasional moment of comic relief (the baby dragon). But the story is overall very grim, particularly since this is the first of Merlin's stories in which his death seems to be assured. Whether or not he will actually die, there's a dark cloud hanging over everything he does.

The biggest problem is perhaps the kreelixes -- they're an interesting idea, but they sound more like something out of Star Trek than Arthurian legend. I'm just saying.

Merlin is a little older and wiser in this one, and he seems to be feeling the first stirrings of romantic feelings for the bland deer-woman Hallia. And Valdearg is a wonderful antagonist -- he'a an aggressive killer, but he's not evil and at times he even shows signs of dignity and endearing sentiment.

"The Fires of Merlin" temporarily ditches the Celtic myth'n'legend, in favor of dragons and a few new inventions of the author's. A solid, richly-written fantasy.

This book is the 3rd book in a 5 book series (the last hasn't been published yet). It is the continuation of the story of Merlin before he became aurthur's mentor. In this book Merlin has just completed training as a wizard which includes making an instrument. Just as Merlin is about to test his instrument and see if he can indeed be a wizard. Urnalda of the dwarves who readers met in the last book summons Merlin to help save her people. As it turns out the "darkest day"on Fincayra has come and the greatest of all dragons, Valdereg, has awoken from the enchanted sleep he had been put in by Merlins grandfather, Tuatha. As Merlin reaches Urnalda he realizes he has walked right into a trap. He escapes and a random act of kindness doesn't go unrewarded. The prophesy speaking of Valdereg's awakening and of the only way to defeat him and who the only one to defeat him can be is interpted all wrong and Merlin sets out to find out why it was the dragon and Fincayra's darkest day and on the way meets many strange and ineresting characters and a new race of people is introduced. Merlin must trust his own wit, instinct, and his heart to find out more about the dragon and a suspious race of winged creatures, magic eaters, that were supposedly extict long ago but now roaming Fincayra in ever increasing numbers. This book combines wit, humor, fantasy, love, terror, revenge, and true kindness in a wonderful blend that keeps the reader entralled throughout the story. This is a must read book and once you start you can't put it down. The only unsatifying bit is that Rhia who readers will remember from the first 2 books has a very small part in this book which is upseting since she is a terrific character and the female who takes her place in these books is not as fully developed.

Ascension Factor -- Frank Herbert's other sci-fi world

This is not a story of empire, such as in his great classic series, "Dune; but rather, Herbert and Ransom tell the story of an ill-fated interstellar colonial expedition gone horribly wrong. I am looking for a hard copy of this work because I believe that the general theme of the mega-hit Strategy software game, "Alpha Centauri" is inspired by some of the vicious alien creatures described in Herbert's story of the adaptation of humanity to a brutal alien world. Characterization is a lot deeper than most sci-fi, and the "run around the fortress" scene is something I've remembered for more than two decades since I last read the book. In our world of animated feature films, this would make an incredible movie.

May be Herbert's greatest work

I really don't understand how this work could have been so poorly received. The entire Voidship series is one of the most provocative and deeply moving works of science fiction that I have ever read. I actually found this series far more provocative than the Dune series. I don't know how much is Herbert and how much is Ransom, but this is an incredible collaboration. It is a long inquiry into the nature of existence, consiousness, and humanity. It is also a great story. It a truly original, unique work.

More Voidship

Unlike Dune, this series has been out of print for some time. Shame! No one does it better than Herbert but Dune-Mania has left too much of his best work unread and unknown. Dune was a masterpiece, no question. But the series devolved into action novels - the work of creating his universe did not have to be re-done so the rest was just what happens next (and as Brian continues the series, what happened before). The Voidship series is different. Beginning with Destination: Void, which establishes the premise, each novel must reestablish the world in which it is set. Each set of characters has very new hurdles and new forms of intelligent life(? at least self-awareness) to deal with, each with their own world view. A good marketing bet would be to reintroduce these novels in paperback, capitalizing on the popularity of the Dune series. Let the new generation of sf readers discover the other worlds of Frank Herbert. My favorite book so far this year!

Many readers will be familiar with husband and wife writing duo Ilona Andrews through their very successful Kate Daniels series. (If you're not, I highly recommend them, but that's another review.) On the Edge is the start to an all-new series from the writing team, one that many readers might view as "something to fill the time while I wait for the next Kate Daniels book". This would be an erroneous view to take.

I picked up On the Edge knowing I was in for good writing, but I thought I'd be able to read a couple of chapters and then put it down to make dinner. As it turns out, the spouse was subjected to frozen pizza for dinner that night, because I could not put the book down. When I finally had no choice (work, what a pest!), I thought about it when I wasn't reading. I couldn't wait to pick it up again and get back to the characters and the world. From the moment Rose and her two young brothers, changeling Jack and necromancer George appear on the page, I'm completely hooked.

Some world building background: The Weird is a world that mirrors our own, but with magic instead of technology. For example, their Airforce flies wyverns, not jets - but they do have an Airforce. They even have special forces. Our world, called the Broken, has no magic at all, and if an Edger stays in it for too long, they'll lose what magic they have, permanently. Edgers like Rose and her family are mixed blood descendants of both the Weird and the Broken. Many of them have magic, but not enough to be welcome in the magical Weird, and too much to want to give it up and go live a "normal" life in our world, the Broken. (If they even could - many of the Edgers weren't born in the Broken, and therefore don't have things like birth certificates or social security cards.) They survive on the Edge, a strip of land between the Weird and the Broken, stealing electricity from across the Border and using Ward stones to keep out the worst of the dangerous creatures the Weird deposits in their Wood.

Rose and her two brothers, Jack and Georgie, are among the most powerful of the people on the Edge. In fact, bluebloods from the Weird have been showing up for years, trying to steal Rose away so she can pop out highly magical babies for them (power seems to be a big part of the pecking order in the Weird.) But Rose isn't having it. When Declan shows up, she tells him what she told all the others - no, I won't sleep with you, I won't marry you, go away. But Declan is different. He doesn't try to force his way past her Wards - he offers her a challenge. Give him three tasks, and if he can complete them, she will belong to him. If he fails, he'll leave the Edge and never return. Rose reluctantly agrees.

But coming up with tasks guaranteed to make Declan fail is soon the least of Rose's problems. Evil, terrible hounds have started showing up and trying to eat people, particularly magical people, which puts Rose, her brothers, and their paternal grandmother Éléonore at the top of the list. Together, Declan and Rose have to stop them, or soon there won't be any Edgers left.

As with the Kate Daniels books, the worldbuilding here is top notch. You gain a very clear understanding of what things mean and how they work without a lot of big infodumps of exposition. It's just woven seamlessly into the story, like Rose having to pack up the guns to drive to Wal-Mart. Rose is the primary POV character, so much of what is revealed comes through her eyes. But occasionally we switch to someone else - one of her brothers, her grandmother, one of the other residents. These are invaluable glimpses as well. I particularly enjoy the switches to George or Jack. Although they are 8 and 10 years old, Andrews doesn't "dumb down" for the kids. They are intelligent, normal kids with heartbreaking problems - George can't stop himself from raising things he cares about from the dead - puppies, birds, cats, his Grandfather - even though it's slowly killing him to keep them all animated. Jack is a changeling; he can change shape into a cat, and he's subject to the instincts and whims of how a cat would think.

I defy you not to fall head over heels in love with them!

Rose has the rarest gift of all, something that makes her so coveted, she has to deter "suitors" with a shotgun. With their mother dead and their father long gone, it's up to Rose and her grandmother to raise the boys and give them the best life they possibly can. Rose has sacrificed her own dreams in the process.

But don't worry. Declan wants to give her new ones - of him! Gorgeous, arrogant, and powerful, Declan could easily be a stereotypical alpha male character, but he's not. Just as 3-dimensional as Curran or Raphael (of the aforementioned Kate Daniels series), he has his own story to tell, and his own agenda beyond Rose. There's also the mysterious William, a man Rose meets in the Broken who wants to date her, and not for her power. Each of them have secrets that are dangerous and important to the Edge's survival - and Rose's.

I can't say much more about On the Edge without giving too much away. But the writing is fantastic, gripping, and it's hands down one of the best books I've read this year. I can't recommend it enough.

A quick warning for male readers

Typically novels that have a 4.5 star average with over 100 reviews are as close to a lock as possible when it comes to a quality read. That wasn't really the case with this book. I should have taken a little more time when reading the reviews to realize that pretty much every review was by a female. As such, I was a little disappointed when this book had a bit more in common with Twilight than with a quality fantasy novel. Like Twilight, the female protagonist (Rose) is pretty much an empty shell. I have no idea what she looks like, other than that she is supposed to be attractive. Meanwhile, excruciating detail is supplied as to how Declan looks, smells, feels, sounds, and tastes. Simply way too much emphasis is placed on this that it becomes nauseating. The phrase "sandalwood musk" was used so many times I feel a compelling urge to now chop down every sandalwood tree I run across throughout the remainder of my life.

The premise, while interesting, does not develop into a plot that is captivating. The characters are all one dimensional, and the book is at times painful to read because it far too often sounds like its written from some awkward and unattractive teenage girl's dream diary. The way men pursue and treat Rose is borderline unbelievable. Declan has absolutely no flaws of which to speak, unless you consider earned confidence a flaw (which Rose does, for whatever reason). I know Ilona Andrews is supposed to be a male/female team, but wherever the writing from a former Army sergeant is supposed to be, I don't see it... unless he is charged with describing the battle scenes, which are almost as bad as the "fauning over Declan" scenes. Essentially, every combat scene can be summed up by Declan cutting a "hound" in half with his sword.

That said, I read the book in its entirety. It isn't horrible, it just isn't good. It's a formulaic female romance novel that just happens to be set in a fantasy world. I write this review because that just wasn't made clear enough when I saw the rating and read some of the reviews when deciding to purchase this book. I wouldn't recommend this to any male readers, or for any woman who isn't constantly day dreaming about a Prince Charming coming along and rescuing her from all of life's troubles.

Unfortunately, I bought all 3 available books in the series, but I won't be reading the second two. Within 15 minutes of starting the 2nd book I already realized I am about to read the same novel all over again, only with two different characters taking on the roles of Rose and Declan. A quick glance at the cover of the 3rd book showed me all I needed to know as to what exactly this series is and will continue to be.

Angieville: ON THE EDGE

I let out a very undignified squeal when this unassuming package showed up on my doorstep completely out of the blue. I'm not ashamed to admit it. Here I am fairly wasting away for the fourth Kate Daniels book and then, swooping in like a risen phoenix, a brand, shiny new copy of Ilona Andrews' ON THE EDGE saves the day. The first in a new series, do we even dare hope to two Andrews releases per year a la Patricia Briggs? The two of them together easily top my favorite urban fantasy writers and this new book (and series) does nothing to shake those stats, I'm happy to say. As with Briggs' Alpha and Omega series, I think it's important to go in with a clean slate, so to speak, not expecting Kate and Curran but ready to embrace a wholly new world, and I think you will enjoy this book on its own merits.

Rose Drayton lives on the Edge--the narrow strip of land between the Broken and the Weird. Yes, you read that right. She and the two little brothers she's raising live a dangerous half-life in between a world where magic is myth (the Broken) and another where it is king (the Weird). Edgers, as they are known, have their feet in both worlds but don't seem to belong to either. They, unlike, the denizens of the Broken are aware of the Weird in all its incomprehensibility. And, unlike the inhabitants of the Weird, they are awkwardly connected t0 (even long for at times) the banality of the Broken. When she was eighteen, Rose was effectively ostracized by the whole of the local town for letting loose a stream of magic and then refusing to marry one of the hometown boys. With her parents out of the picture, two half-magical little boys to take care of and train, and determined to control her own life, Rose takes an illegal job in the Broken and attempts to fly under the radar. And it works. Sort of. Until Lord Declan Camarine appears on her porch step, sword strapped to his back absolutely reeking blue blood Weird, announcing she will be his come hell or high water. Rose responds...less than favorably. And we have ourselves a story!

Once again Ilona Andrews plunges me into a fully realized world without a by your leave. And I love it. Like Kate's Atlanta it is full of complexity and contradiction and a wonderfully messy history. But it is also wilder, in a sense. Rose carries a rifle and she has to use it more than she'd like. The people in the Edge are almost clan-like in their politics. Feuds happen and they last for decades. Payment is harsh and exacted when and where the wronged party decides it will be. This series has a different focus than the more traditionally urban fantasy Kate Daniels series and, though in the end I didn't love it quite as much, I loved the world building and the children who actually seemed real to me. ON THE EDGE is definitely heavier on the romance side of the urban fantasy spectrum and, as a result, Rose and Declan's relationship is more central than Kate and Curran's in the Magic series. Occasionally the descriptions and general admiring of each other's forms got a bit cloying for me, but the nice thing is that they are both well-rounded, compelling characters. At first I wasn't sure about Declan. He does start out a bit looming, take no prisoners, you will be mine for my taste. But there is more there than brawn and arrogance. And it is a very intriguing more. As far as Rose goes, she's had it rough and is still full of fire--just the way I like my UF heroines--but (and this is key) she has the creds and the depth to back it up. She's tough and at the same time she longs for education and training to harness and develop her powers. But instead she spends her days flogging her guts out to support her little brothers. She loves them unconditionally and is determined their lives will be better than hers. I love how full she feels as a character. I believed in her and I liked her. As for the boys, Jack and Georgie, you won't stand a chance against their charms and that is all. There is that trademark humor throughout the story as well and it really held the whole thing together, especially when the particularly creepy elements started rearing their ugly heads.

Fans of the Redwall series eager to sink their teeth into the latest adventure from Brian Jacques will be surprised to find that the cover of Castaways of the Flying Dutchman belies the contents of this fine mystery novel. A handsome young lad, sporting a billowing, ripped shirt, gazes off into the distance, while behind him a ship founders on an eerily tempestuous sea. It's true, the first (brief) section of the book does tell the tale of a stowaway orphan on the legendary, ill-fated ship, the Flying Dutchman. And that's as swashbuckling a story as they come. But as soon as the boy and his newly adopted dog are tossed into the sea during a ferocious storm, the book takes a sharp turn. Ben and his dog, Ned, given eternal life by a sympathetic angel, now set out to "bring confidence and sympathy, help others to change their fate." Two centuries later, they arrive in the village of Chapelvale, which is filled with quirky, affectionate citizens, who immediately welcome the mysterious but kindhearted and brave boy and his dog. Well known for his Redwall books (over a dozen volumes detailing the quests and feasts of various plucky woodland creatures), Jacques here turns his attention to the human world, and his fans will not be disappointed. Readers led by the title and cover art to expect a briny swashbuckler may be surprised to find that the bulk of the story consists of an ambling scavenger hunt set in a cozy English village. Pure-hearted enough to escape the curse that befalls the crew of the legendary Flying Dutchman, a boy and his dog are instead granted immortality and sent forth to "spread peace and joy" throughout the world. Two centuries later, in 1896, the ageless Ben and Ned (the latter is the dog) land in Chapelvale, a quaint village threatened with industrialization by a passel of nasty developers and ruled by a gang of juvenile delinquents. With the help of the villagers, the duo conducts a fairly contrived search (one clue is even written in invisible ink) for the ancient land title that will save Chapelvale from its grim fate. Though most of the characters are bipeds, the story doesn't veer much from the Redwall formula. Ultimately, it doesn't much matter whether the bumbling thugs sent from London to intimidate the Chapelvale populace are weasels or humans--Jacques's fans will be tickled by the characters' goofy slapstick regardless of their genus. The care taken with design (among other features, line drawings are set niftily into the first page of each chapter) adds to the appeal. All ages.

Gr 5-8-This novel has a split personality. It begins with flair in 1620 in Copenhagen, where the sinister Dutch sea captain Vanderdecken begins an ill-fated journey aboard the Flying Dutchman. Also onboard is young Neb, a stowaway who is immediately discovered and put to work. The crazed captain, cursing God, forces them to sail the ship around Cape Horn in a horrible storm. An angel bearing a sword appears and dooms the ship and its inhabitants to an eternity of ghostly sailing; Neb and his dog, however, receive the gift of eternal life, the ability to read one another's thoughts, and the duty to roam the world and help others in need. After a brief sojourn in Tierra del Fuego, the story jumps forward to England in 1896, where the boy and his wisecracking dog, now calling themselves Ben and Ned, help save a village from being demolished. From this point on, the novel reads like an old-fashioned children's mystery, with all the good-hearted villagers pitching in, guided by Ben, to find the missing land deeds that would foil the plans of a black-hearted industrialist. Esoteric clues, buried treasure, village bullies, an absentminded librarian, and nice old ladies create a cozy, claustrophobic atmosphere that will make readers wonder what the Flying Dutchman had to do with anything-except for giving Ben nightmares. The supernatural aspects seem out of place and superfluous. Flying Dutchman Review

Ben, a boy who cannot speak, runs away from his cruel home. He then accidentally finds himself on a crazed pirate's ship commanded by Captain Vanderdecken. There, he meets the friend who will be with him for the rest of his life, a dog he names Ned. When Vanderdecken curses the heavens for his bad luck in passing the dangerous Cape Horn, an angel ascends from heaven and banishes the captain and his crew to sail the seas for eternity. But Ben and Ned are blessed with special gifts. Ben is given the powers of speech and they are both given the power to talk to each other through their thoughts. The angel finally gives them the gift of eternal youth and commands them to go about the world and help those in trouble. They are then thrown from the ship and find themselves on the shores of Cape Horn. This is another brilliant novel by Brian Jacques and as always, employs bits of humor, suspense, and riddles. This novel follows the two companions throughout Europe as they follow the angel's commands. This book is recommended to all Redwall fans and kids from the age of 7 to 12.

Ship of Love

Conflict of Honors, by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, is another space opera novel set in the Liaden universe. The first book I read, Scout's Progress, was a romance set in a futuristic setting. This book, on the other hand, is a bit more than that, and that's all for the better. It has interesting heroes, vile villains, and a bit of action. I didn't have the same problem getting into it as I did with the first book, but that could be because I was already used to the language used. Still, there wasn't as much of it, and the storyline is a more straightforward. Definitely a keeper.
Back cover blurbs have been known to be wrong about the contents of a book before, but I rarely see one that's misleading like this one is, while still being essentially accurate. If you look at the back cover in the bookstore, you get the impression that once Shan and Priscilla meet up, it's a quest for revenge, with nothing standing in their way. Instead, it's a bit quieter, more subtle. It's too bad, too, because the book is really good for what it is, and doesn't need a punched up cover blurb to sell it. In fact, it may detract from it, as readers finds out they're not getting what they thought.
That doesn't mean that the plot's not interesting, though. It is. The machinations of the bad guys are intriguing, though the First Mate of the Daxflan is a bit too one-dimensionally evil. Still, the master trader of the ship is very good, walking the fine line between evil and insanity. Watching them when their plans come to fruition, and seeing how our heroes ultimately resolve the situation is entertaining, and will keep you turning the pages.
One problem, though, is that the situations are almost too easy. I didn't really get the sense of jeopardy from them, and they seemed too easily dealt with. I enjoyed them because I liked the characters and I wanted to see how they solved the problems, but I didn't get any sense that they were in danger. Even the short action sequences are rather tame, though they provide the most danger of any of them. The flaws in the heroes are personal flaws, and in taking care of these situations, they almost seem too perfect. It brought down the interest level a touch and was ultimately disappointing. The climax of the book, though, is fitting. It's understated, a result of negotiation and talking rather than violence. It's nice that a book like this can end without any real bloodshed, with no shootouts or anything like that. Instead, it fits in with the rest of the book.
The characters in this book (with the exception noted above) are wonderful. Their emotions are real, raw, and heartfelt. Priscilla is reserved, hesitating to let her emotions out because she's scared of having them spurned as they have been since she was exiled. The love she finds on Shan's ship is eye-opening to her, and she learns a great deal about emotional health from the friends she makes. Lina, her first friend on the ship, is very understanding and patient with her. The relationship that develops between them is very touching, especially as it grows deeper with time. Lina is also Shan's lifelong friend, and she feels his pain as he finds himself drawn to Priscilla but can't act on it, due to both how bad it would look as well as the shell that Priscilla is still in.
Shan is probably my favourite character, though. He is so three dimensional, constantly demonstrating different facets to his personality. He has loyalty to his clan, a burning affection for his friends and a heartfelt duty to his crew. He's suave, sophisticated, devious and funny. He's always on the ball and able to think on his feet, which is a good quality as one event after another happens to put Priscilla in jeopardy. Lee and Miller make the reader care about him, and watching him pine for Priscilla is almost heart-wrenching.
Love in Conflict of Honors is very free, and that may put off some readers. A love triangle of sorts does form between these three characters, but there is no jealousy, only caring amongst them. If you have trouble with the idea of same-sex relationships, then steer clear of this book. There isn't anything graphic about it, so if you don't mind the idea but you don't want to see it in action, then you're safe. It's worth reading, though, as you come to care about them and want them to succeed.
This is a book about relationships, and thus it moves kind of slow. It's interesting, though, which means that you won't mind spending the time with Shan, Priscilla and Lina. You get to know them, their deep desires and their outlook on the world. The loving byplay between them is great. Don't expect lots of action, like in some space opera books, because Lee and Miller don't write that (at least judging by the two books I've read). Instead, they write character exploration, what it means to love and what loyalty is.
I said earlier that this isn't a romance, but a bit more. It has some of the trappings of a romance, but the results are much better than that. If you dislike romances, you shouldn't let that keep you away from this book. It's definitely worth reading.

A Matter of Balance

Conflict of Honors (1988) is the second SF novel in the Liaden Universe series, following Agent of Change. In the previous volume, Val Con and Miri were caught by the Juntavas, but were released onto a derelict ship. Although damaged by the Yxtrang, the ship was somewhat repairable. Then the Yxtrang came back.

In this novel, Priscilla Delacroix y Mendoza is a Terran, a native of the planet Sintia. She became a spacer at age sixteen. She is now Cargo Master of the Liaden ship Daxflan.

Shan yos'Galan is a Liaden. He is Theodelm of Line Galan and nadelm of Clan Korval, a Master Trader, and Captain of the Liaden ship Dutiful Passage.

Lina Faaldom is a Liaden and Theodelm of Clan Desnol. She is the Librarian on Dutiful Passage.

Sav Rid Olanek is a Liaden of Clan Plemia. He is Trader on the Daxflan, which is owned by his clan.

Dagmar Collier is a Terran. She is second mate on the Daxflan.

In this story, the Terrans on the Daxflan are very disgruntled by their conditions. They are treated as nonpersons and eat disgusting food in an impromptu messhall away from the Liaden crew. Priscilla's friend Shelly has just bought out her contract to get off the Daxflan.

After Shelly leaves, Priscilla saves her file containing suspicions of contraband in the sealed cargo. Then she is unexpectedly assigned to go down to Jankalin. Since the planet is only a dropoff point, she is puzzled about being included within the landing party.

On the world, Dagmar takes her aside to help carry something. Once they get through the recalcitrant door, Priscilla is knocked out and left in the locked room. When she awakes, Priscilla discovers that she has been stranded.

Priscilla gains employment on the Dutiful Passage to overtake her ship. The captain requires her to take a battery of strange tests before hiring her under personal contract. Then he assigns her to Lina as Pet Librarian, with additional duties as needed.

Priscilla does many and varied tasks on the Dutiful Passage. The pet library is the most pleasant, but she also really enjoys the piloting lessons. These are required in her contract, but are without charge to her.

When the Dutiful Passage next encounters the Daxflan, someone tries to murder Shan. Priscilla saves the Captain, but he does not allow her to reveal their suspicions of Dagmar's involvement. Shan does tell her of Dutiful Passage's outstanding complaint against Daxflan. Shan even mentions the conflict between his sister and Sav Rid.

This tale involves Priscilla in a balancing of debts against Sav Rid and the Daxflan. She learns much about Liaden customs and culture during her time on the Dutiful Passage. And the crew of the Dutiful Passage also discover and admire her own talents.

Although this tale has few similarities with the previous novel, it is still about Clan Korval. Shan and Val Con are cousins and are like brothers to each other. This story seems to take place prior to the previous novel, but the Liaden Universe timeline is very confusing.

The story is filled with action and conflict, but also with satisfying interpersonal relationships. The next installment is Carpe Diem. Read and enjoy!

Highly recommended for Lee & Miller fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of alien cultures, social conflicts, and paranormal talents.

excellent continuation of the series!!

Jack Flemming, ace reporter, had the unusual experience of waking up one evening to find that he was dead. Actually, to find out he was UNdead-- apparently his old lover, Maureen, WASN'T kidding when she said she was a vampire!!
In "Bloodlist", the first book of the Vampire Files series, Jack was in the unique position of being able to track down his own murderers while gaining experience in his new "life" (I use the term loosely, here). In the first book he teamed up with an actor-turned-P.I. named Charles, and the two formed a mutually beneficial relationship: Jack's strength, heightened senses and ability to disappear aided Charles's investigations, while Charles had the helpful ability to move freely about in daylight. The pair are back again in the second in the series, "Lifeblood".
This time around Jack is getting more comfortable with his new condition, but is trying to find his lost lover, Maureen, who mysteriously disappeared 5 years ago. The search for her is suddenly complicated by Maureen's estranged (and possibly dangerous) sister and two bumbling-yet-dangerous vampire hunters who think Jack is some hideous creature of the night. Nothing could be farther from the truth as Jack is an extremely likeable character. He does not feed on humans, preferring cattle at the stockyards with occasional horse blood for treat, he has a girlfriend, and he even sends money home to his parents. Jack is the sort of supernatural creature you would actually LIKE to have as a friend.
Set in Chicago towards the end of the Depression when Capone is in jail but crime lords still rule the city, The Vampire Files is a truly wonderful new genre: hardboiled vampire detective fiction. In the style of great detective stories like "Maltese Falcon", there are a lot verbal jabs and wisecracks in addition to sudden plot twists that keep you guessing. The characters are sometimes a little stylized, like film-noir-- Jack's girlfriend is a nightclub singer who used to perform in a gig called The Nightcrawler, and there's of course the big bruiser of a hitman with nerves like taught piano wire-- but this adds to the drama and flavor of the book and makes it more period and believable.
The writing is excellent and the plot clips along at a fast pace that immediately draws in the reader. The story is fun and unusual with a vampire-cum-investigator as its main character, so even if you're not into vamp novels, you are easily drawn in. This is a series of books, and it's best to begin with #1, "Bloodlist" and work your way through the books. You COULD start here with #2, "Lifeblood", but you'd be missing out on a lot of history, characters and insight into Jack himself. Ms. Elrod doesn't spend much time rehashing what has happened before, so someone new to the series picking it up halfway through won't get all the subtle references.
All in all, I really enjoy this series and highly recommend it!!

Second in the series, lots of plot and action

Second novel in the series about Jack Fleming, PI and vampire. Those who already know that they like vampire novels, anything at all that features a vampire, can skip this review, and likewise, those who hate the whole idea of vampires can skip it. But for those trying to decide whether or not to read more of this genre, or whether the one vampire novel you've already read was a fluke, it may help to have some ways to categorize these novels. Thus: BunRab's Standard Vampire Classification Guide. First, most authors of vampire novels approach from one of the main genres of genre fiction; thus their background may be primarily in romance, or in science fiction/fantasy, or in murder mysteries, or in horror. Second, many vampire novels come in series; knowing whether this is one of a series, and where in the series it falls, may be helpful. Then we have some particular characteristics: - Is the vampire character (or characters) a "good guy" or a "bad guy"? Or are there some of each? - Are there continuing characters besides the vampire, through the series? - Are there other types of supernatural beings besides vampires? - Can the vampire stand daylight under some circumstances, or not stand daylight at all? - Does the vampire have a few other supernatural characteristics, many other supernatural characteristics, or none other than just being a vampire? (E.g., super strength, change into an animal, turn invisible) - Does the vampire have a regular job and place in society, or is being a vampire his or her entire raison d'etre? - Does the vampire literally drink blood, or is there some other (perhaps metaphorical) method of feeding? - Is sex a major plot element, a minor plot element, or nonexistent? - Is the entire vampire feeding act a metaphor for sex, part of a standard sex act, or unrelated to sex? - Is the story set in one historical period, more than one historical period, or entirely in the present day? - Does the story have elements of humor, or is it strictly serious? - Is the writing style good, or is the writing just there to manage to hold together the plot and characters?
P.N. Elrod's series about Jack Fleming is in the hard-boiled detective genre. Fleming is a good guy (although with worries about his own ethics). Fleming is a former journalist (before he died), now working as a sidekick to a private investigator. The series takes place in the Chicago of the '30s, after Al Capone is locked up, but before the Depression ends. Criminal gangs are still a big force in Chicago. Besides Jack and his boss, various criminal mobs, and police both honest and corrupt, are recurring characters in the series. So is Jack's girlfriend, Bobbi, a nightclub singer. Jack drinks blood, but it doesn't have to be human- he uses cows at the Stockyards usually, and likes horses as a treat. He does, however, also drink a little from his girlfriend during sex. Sex is discreet and not too frequent in the series- no explicit details; this is a detective series, not a romance. Jack has a few supernatural powers associated with being a vampire: the usual ones of being stronger and faster than humans, and he also can turn invisible and float through walls. He must sleep during the day, on his native earth - but garlic and crosses don't bother him. There aren't any other kinds of supernatural characters in the series. As befits the detective genre, there is a certain amount of wisecracking in the dialogue; Jack can be a smart-ass sometimes, and the criminals can be inadvertently funny. Overall, the series is a well-done version of the genre, each book being easy to read and most of the characters being well-described and thought out.
The second book in the series gives us more information about Jack's first love, Maureen, who turned him into a vampire, and who has been missing for several years. We also learn more about Jack's own family. One caution for new readers: if you haven't read the first book in the series, go back and read it - this series pretty much has to be read in order. Unlike many series, the action in each book here is not separated by some unwritten-about period; the action in each book picks up quite soon after the previous book, often as early as the next day - or night. This book has more than one plot going on; besides the search for Maureen, and meeting with an unusual member of her family, there are also a couple of vampire-hunters after Jack. The vampire hunters are a bit two-dimensional, stereotyped characters - a simple minded young bumpkin following an older religious fanatic. Jack is disgusted with how many people seem to buy every word that Bram Stoker wrote. Hey, Jack's a nice guy, not a villain- he calls his mother regularly, sends money home to help his parents out, and does his best to live as normal a life as one of the undead can! When he kills someone in this book, he is worried, because even though the guy deserved killing, and had tried to kill Jack (ha!), Jack doesn't want to become a killer himself. His worries about the ethics of his condition are interesting to follow.

I will never again watch a movie or read a book about hunting down and eradicating vampires in the same way after having become acquainted with Jack Fleming. From now on, I'm rooting for the vampire.
Jack is the ultimate vampire hero; sexy, smart and supernatural. He is a thrill to know.
Elrod's characters are all, as a matter of fact, great to know, even those who you hate. They are well drawn, finely detailed, until they become living breathing people who leave you confused as to whether you've been reading fact or fantasy. She also knows how to bring the time period alive.
Ms. Elrod you have my assurance that as your newest devotee I will be reading, no, devouring your books, one by one and then waiting for new ones to come out.
