Very good by a very good author.

An in your face, brutal, no holds barred story not only about the daily life of a family that wants a new beginning, but is also about the police and army personnel that have given up a 9 to 5 existence to be involved in the urban guerrilla warfare that had threatened to tear Northern Ireland apart. More specifically, the story's central character Sean McNally is a tout, but not just any tout, he is a tout of the highest order. He is super tout who has names of that go the way up the chain. He's a betrayer, a super tout, who is looking at twenty five years to life for the brutal murder of a judge from the use, of all things, a rocket launcher and he now he wants immunity for it. Will the government give it or will they wilt and send him off to prison instead? Also, who in their right mind would give such a person immunity anyway?

Another character, is Lt. David Ferris, who, as the arresting officer, is mixed up to his nuts with McNally and also with the Criminal Investigation Special (CIS) Branch.They are pushing him all the way because they want a result, they need a result and he can get it for them too. Ferris is a busy man because he's involved not only with the case, but also he is a full time officer the British army who works well and truly around the clock. He's on foot patrol with rocks and all sorts of things in his face, he's in charge of his unit leading the way and he knows that the Turf Lodge Estate where he often visits, is a melting pot of hatred against the British Army. His life is not easy. He has to face the viciousness, the violence and the abhorrence in Northern Ireland on a daily basis. That's his life.

A 'Field of Blood' as Seymour reminds us, inside the front cover, is a place where betrayers, such as, Judas Iscariot was buried. He hung himself, of course, and the thirty pieces of silver he had couldn't be returned. So it was used to buy a small field to bury him. Now, until this day, that field is called "Hakeldama" or a field of blood. So Seymour asks the question, will this be where McNally ends up or will he end up getting immunity and a new life away from friends and everyone he knows?

Its a very pyrrhic story where there are lots of losers and if there are any winners, it comes at an excessive cost. Actually, most of Seymour's are like this and it has tended to be a major theme through out his career. The good news is that if you liked this one, then you will LOVE 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' and, of course, 'Harry's Game' which are phenomenal! 4 Stars for this one.

Unbelievably out of print...

Gerald Seymour has written many excellent thrillers but this is, in my view, his best. Seymour's trilogy of books set during Northern Ireland's troubles - "Harry's Game", "The Journeyman Tailor" and "Field of Blood" - are based on his extensive, "on the ground" experience as a news reporter during the period and are all riveting reads, but what turns "Field of Blood" into an outstanding work is his equally insightful and wholly believable exploration of the forced relationship between two people trained by their upbringings and circumstances to detest everything about each other and what they stand for. The only unbelievable thing is how such a good novel can be out of print.

3.5 Stars - An intriguing zombie premise that does an excellent job with the gore

Plot Summary: Killed in a car accident as a young teen, Jessie woke up in her coffin under six feet of earth and clawed her way out to live as a zombie. She met up with a gang of semi-reclusive zombies who haunt the woods of Calumet County, Indiana, and she's been with them ever since. Jessie eschews eating humans - who live in barricaded townships against the zombie menace - and she lives off deer, possum, duck, and any other animal she can hunt. Despite her supernatural strength, Jessie's body will slowly decompose, bloat, become infested with bugs, and then dry up. Despite this grim future, Jessie's survival instinct is strong, and she has a lot of affection for some of the zombies in her gang. When strange-smelling creatures, halfway between dead and alive, begin to infiltrate the forest, Jessie suspects that some of her fellow zombies have caught a new disease, and she tries to piece it all together. What she can't imagine is that she's intimately involved with this new threat to zombies and humans alike, and it will change society forever.

After I read the first chapter I realized that I wouldn't be eating any food while reading Dust. My roast beef sandwich just wasn't palatable after reading about these maggot-ridden zombies who shamble around spitting out black "coffin liquor" while losing body parts in the woods. I give author Joan Frances Turner an A for her vivid, stomach-churning descriptions, because when I'm reading a book about zombies, I want to be grossed out. It's par for the course.

Dust has an interesting premise. The zombies in Ms. Turner's vision retain enough of their humanity to socialize, communicate, and enjoy their undead life, but their hunger instincts eliminate any compassion they might feel for the humans and animals they eat. Zombies can live for centuries, and they communicate via a sort of telepathy, since lips, throats and tongues start to decay soon after death. I can't say I've encountered this kind of zombie before, and I was able to suspend my disbelief for the most part and revel in their disgusting nature. They didn't win my heart, which is kind of a shame since they are "humanized" zombies, but I was rooting for them by the end. The humans themselves didn't elicit any of my sympathy, strangely enough.

The plot unfolds with a series of small, seemingly unconnected events, and by the end there's a full-on plague that practically wipes out life on Earth. I thought it was over several times, but there were more and more pages to read, so I was impressed at how it kept twisting and turning toward its conclusion. Unfortunately the pacing is a little hampered by dreams, flashbacks, and existential passages that made for slow reading at times, but it did build up into something that was exciting to read.

"My right arm fell off today.Lucky for me, I'm left handed." So begins the story of Jessie Anne Porter. She was killed when she was a teenager and her father crashed into a pickup truck.

Jessie remembers having to crawl to the surface of her grave. Somehow she had become a zombie. She wasn't bothered by her stink but was consumed with hunger and drawn to the scent of a rabbit in the cemetery.

Jessie joins a group of zombies, the Fly-by-Nights. Unlike traditional zombies, the mutated beings had human traits. Florian was ancient and philosophical, Teresa is the pack leader and is territorial and demonstrates jealousy of Jessie.

When Jessie meets Joe, she describes him "The...right side of his face was smashed in..crushed cheekbone...maggots seethed from every pore."

It demands certain discipline for the uniniated to read a zombie story. I was constantly grossed out as, at one point a large beetle emerged from one zombie who made the transition from a bloater to a breeder.

A new illness is discovered which causes the undead beings to grow new skin and muscles and become more lifelike. At the same time, humans or hoos become near death and often wish to be killed.

The story continues with groups attempting to gain power but this illness seems like an epidemic and the reader must learn the effect on both groups.

Jessie and Florian are unique characters and the novel gets a good mark for originality and the telling of a tale. I did think that the novel was too long in developing the main part of the story and could have been condensed.

Sometimes, when I give a book a middling rating, it means the book was middling throughout. This is not one of those times. I intensely disliked the first half of _Dust_, and it took me about a month to get through it. The second half, I loved, and read in one day.

_Dust_'s greatest strength -- and also its greatest drawback -- is that Joan Frances Turner writes description extremely well. She has the gift of evoking that one perfect image that puts you right there in the character's mind: a dimly remembered strawberry, or a lost connection described as:

"a light shining from a farmhouse window on some dark, empty highway, streaking brightly across your windshield as you drive past, and then fading. And then gone."

It becomes a drawback when Turner conjures up, with the same skill, the imagery of human decomposition. Readers with cast iron stomachs may not mind, but many others will feel physically ill throughout much of _Dust_. It was a little too much for me, I confess.

Turner's undead, who prefer not to be called zombies, are sentient and have an entire culture of their own. They communicate via radio waves when their mouths and throats can no longer form words. They have their own life cycle, starting when they tunnel up from the grave, continuing through the stages of decomposition, then culminating in a second death. It's easy to feel pity for the undead, who retain their mental and emotional capacities but whose bodies are rotting and whose loved ones feel nothing but revulsion if they meet again. Yet this thinking is something of a trap, it turns out; many of the undead are content with their lot and don't want their old lives back, and one human goes to appalling extremes in an attempt to "fix" someone who doesn't want to be fixed.

_Dust_ contains plenty of thought-provoking material, echoing several real-life controversies while (thankfully) not paralleling any one issue so closely that the book becomes a polemic. The thought-provoking elements, however, are drowned out during the first half of the book by the nauseating descriptions and by too much senseless violence. The heroine, Jessie, is in a gang, and she and her friends are constantly involved in bullying, gang hazing, intergang turf wars, and the like. I could, in a way, understand the frustrations that fueled the aggression, but I still had trouble liking the characters. The grossness hampered my experience, too, by causing me to read less closely than I should have been reading. Turner doesn't spoon-feed anything. Many of the character conflicts are implied between the lines, and the world-building is subtle. For example, it's clear that Turner's world is not quite the world we know, but we're not explicitly told when and where the divergence took place (by which I mean "when did humans become aware of zombies," not the event in the geological past). If you "step back" from the story because it's about to make you lose your lunch, you may miss something important in the process.

At about the halfway point, _Dust_ really sank its teeth in, pardon the bad pun. I don't want to spoil the plot twists, but I'll say that the gang warfare largely falls away in favor of science-gone-wrong and beautifully written musings on the nature of life and death, family and friendship. There's still plenty of unpleasant imagery; this is easier to take, though, once the plot starts moving more quickly and the characters become more fleshed-out, plus now the icky moments are interspersed with passages of lovely prose like the one quoted above. Jessie's plot arc is compelling, and so are the little glimpses Turner gives us of the world outside Jessie's immediate frame of reference. So much can be conveyed by a brief mention of a skyline looking wrong.

I closed _Dust_ with a feeling of satisfaction and an appreciation for Turner's craft. It would be inaccurate, though, to claim that I enjoyed the book all the way through, hence the rating. Dust is worth reading (especially the second half), but to get to the best parts you'll have to go through a lot of stomach-turning imagery. Your mileage may vary.

Why, Bowden...why!? AC fans be WARY of this novel.

Okay, I have JUST finished reading the book....

I. Am. Thoroughly. LIVID.

*may contain mild but vague spoilers, I won't go into detail*

So the book is 7/8 a retelling of AC1 and the DS game, only an 1/8 is new content. Bowden glazes over key events that could've had more detail and keep my interest (like the missions themselves), yet describes the most peculiar events that could have done without heavy explanations. Sure! Let's find out that a certain major characters die in two sentences WITHOUT much description or reflection. But let's go ahead and explain in a paragraph how much Altair hates the smell of death to the point of vomiting (He's a Master Assassin for christssake! Why should the smell of rotting flesh affect him NOW as if it were his first encounter with the smell?)

His style is odd. His mesh of different sentence structures didn't flow well during important events. It didn't bug me too much since I had read the previous 2 books of his and was prepared. But when it did, it reared it's ugly head, making me stop my reading to slap my hand to my face and break what little plot flow I managed to obtain.

Let me give an example.There is a moment it is anticipated that Talal is sending out men to attack Altair. What I get is this lovely bit of text:

He waved to his men.
Who lifted their swords.
And attacked.

My guess was that he tried for a dramatic effect with the pausing...but this is so awkwardly broken up, I can't even follow. Whatever he was trying to accomplish with this didn't work with the flow. I had to stop and look at it for awhile...

He also likes to abuse italics. Don't get me wrong, he's used...some of it in the right places, but he likes to use italicized font for EVERYTHING: Flashbacks, screaming, internal monologue, identifying foreign languages... At one point, I thought Altair was monologuing when it was a FLASHBACK. A little consistency or context to clear things up would've been nice, considering I became wary of ANY italics being used thereafter.

But there is one point....oh man, I got LOST. Lost as in I-read-the-chapter-back-and-forth-twice-and-only-had-a-vague-idea-of-what's-going-on lost. It was a chapter where Altair encounters Malik in Jerusalem for an assignment...BUT HERE'S THE CATCH. It starts chronicling at the END of Altair's mission when the deed is done, and then awkwardly begins describing from the beginning when he enters the bureau only to end before he kills the target. This is the ONLY time he narrates a mission in such a manner and it was INFURIATING beyond means.

I don't even want to start on how I feel about the deaths and actions of EVERY CHARACTER.

Any light in the road through all this? There's an introduction of a character (not mentioned in the game canon) towards the later part that seems to have a well-written personality. It's too bad we don't get too much time with him because he was the ONLY character in this novel that held my interest.

Bowden's interpretation of the series is below-average at best, and does not do the game's narrative justice.

**There is, however, another book you may be interested in since, due to publisher circumstances, WOULD HAVE BEEN an official novelization of events prior to Assassin's Creed 1: "Assassin and Other Stories" by Steven Barnes. You won't be dissappointed**

If you enjoy the game series, do not buy this book. It will crush your expectations.

Outstanding, yet compressed

As others have said this book chronicles the first game in the Assassin's Creed series and the PSP game Bloodlines, taking events and dialog from the games verbatim. There is however so much more here. Where in the game Altaïr is an undefined vessel for the player to fill, this work fleshes out the person. There is a grand story here, but the telling of it is very compressed. Events are described quickly and perfunctorily, and the scene is not set in a detailed manner. This is I think due to the "reading a journal" style of writing combined with an arbitrary page count limitation. Given total freedom, a scholar of Bowden's training could have written a 1500 page epic, the kind one reads over a whole winter of chilly evenings. I believe the Masters of the Creed franchise decreed that such an attempt would take too long and would be too long for the intended audience. A pity, as I think the actual audience is people like me who want to wring every possible scrap of information from this amazing story. That said, I enjoyed it thoroughly and was very satisfied in how storyline set in the games but never resolved were completed. Like the games, you feel "close" to actual history, while at the same time are given the sense of being privy to something hidden, something very, very important. A must read for fans of the Creed franchise, and an enjoyable quick read for those who wonder what this whole Assassin's Creed thing is about but cannot or will not play the games for whatever reason.

Simple in telling, in routine and not very detailed, but add some highlights on the afterlife Altaïr

I'll be as unbiased as I can. I like the book, only because I'm a hardcore Assassin's Creed fan, so that is why I gave it a three, which is already generous because it
leans more closer to a two star novel. As a book fan I would only give this one or two stars. Here's why.

The story of the first game and Bloodlines is retold and it is interesting to read it, seeing how everything connects in the first game in a cycle that is repetitive, but not as repetitive as in the game, cause the author manages to bring some variety to it, but this could have been done much better. The story is not very descriptive, it just mainly repeats events, conversations from the game. It lacks describtion of the locations of the characters in general, which makes them lack depth. It's not worse as the first game, but with the oppertunity to create this novel, he could have really added more depth. Yes he did not manage to do this. It's mostly just all directly from the game. (Minor spoiler ahead) Mostly I misssed the conversations Altaïr has with Malik as his character really shows, and how it shows how he slowly changes, not just jumps from one point to the other.

When we get to the part of Bloodlines it gets a little better, but I don't think this is because of the author's writing, but because the game itself didn't have a story where this cycle just repeated itself (assassination, back to Masyaf, assassination, back to Masyaf and so on...). That is what made this part more readable, but again I don't think we owe that to the author. Once again he isn't very descriptive and could have added much more to the relationship between Maria and Altaïr.

The only good thing I can add is that between the events of first game and Bloodlines there are a few scenes of Altaïr's younger life, which is kind of a build up for what happens in his later life. It's third part where it at least got more interesting, where the stories of Altaïr's begin, but while it is interesting to read what happened afterwards, you do once again get the impression that it could have been done a lot better. What you miss were more personal conversations again with Maria and Altaïr and other characters. The over all story of the book never really gets very personal.

For Hardcore Assassin's Creed fans who want to know as much as possible it might be worth it to buy this book. But I wouldn't recommend it to others.

A truly superb series of novels

About a year ago I began a reading project of the major vampire novels and stories, from John Polidori's THE VAMPYRE to Bram Stoker's DRACULA to Richard Matheson's I AM LEGEND to Theodore Sturgeon's SOME OF YOUR BLOOD to more recent works. I had previously read various novels, including the Anita Blake series, which started promisingly but not only never lived up to its initial promise but regressed to embarrassingly awful pornography. Last year I decided to read Charlaine Harris's vampire series, which was originally known as The Southern Vampire Mysteries but eventually became better known as the Sookie Stackhouse Novels.

Now, this is where the story gets odd. Completely independently of my reading project I had heard about and planned on watching Alan Ball's new series TRUE BLOOD. I was a huge fan of SIX FEET UNDER and was anxious to see how he would handle a series dealing with vampires. A few days after I had ordered the first four Sookie Stackhouse novels I learn to my great shock that Ball's new series was based on the very same novels. It is the most serendipitous coincidence in my life as a reader.

Because so many people have become aware of these books as a result of the TV series, a word about the differences between the two is in order. There are both definite similarities and some sharp differences between the two. The books focus much more on Sookie and less on the lives of the supporting characters, not surprising given that Sookie is the narrator in the novels. Sookie's narrative voice is for me one of the joys of the books and I miss that very personal perspective when I watch the TV series. The books are also far less sexual than the series, though there are several sex scenes (though it never descends to the pure porn found in the Anita Blake books). The series differs sharply from the books when it deals with characters other than Sookie. For instance, Tara in the books is a minor (and white--some debate this, but she is explicitly described as having olive skin, something that is virtually always said of Caucasians, and there is not a single word to suggest that she is African-American) character. Jason plays a far smaller role. Just about everything touching Tara and Jason cannot be found in the novels. Sam and Tara are not involved. Lafayette cannot be regarded as an important character in the books, though his fate in the books sets up a surprising twist in the TV series. On the other hand, Eric is as important as the other three main characters in the books, Sookie, Bill, and Sam. Still, overall the larger story arc of the first two novels very roughly adheres to the novels. If this persists into Season Three of the TV series, then it will take place to some degree in Jackson, Mississippi and will see the introduction of the werewolf community to the story.

The one huge advantage of the novels over the series is that there is just so much more that happens. Season One of the series corresponds to the first novel in the sequence. I expected that the TV show would begin to diverge from the novels in the second season and to a degree it did. The TV series introduced Sophie, the Queen of Louisiana much, much earlier than in the novels, so I think that some of the stories are going to be accelerated. So I see no reason for anyone who enjoys the show not to plunge in and enjoy a whole string of new adventures in the life of Sookie Stackhouse, barmaid and telepath. What has delighted me is how consistently superb the novels are. I felt the second novel in the series, DEAD AND LIVING IN DALLAS, was a bit less entertaining than the second book, but all the rest in the sequence were increasingly excellent. And they all mesh to tell a unified story. One novel ends and the next picks up the story perhaps as little as two or three weeks later.

The novels also introduce new and more interesting supernatural characters. The Anita Blake novels did this as well, but I felt that that series was increasingly less successful. Both series introduce weres (were wolves, were tigers, were panthers, and others), witches, vampires from other locales, and fairies. But throughout it all Sookie remains both an innocent and an explorer.

All in all, this is one of the most enjoyable long series of novels that I know. My only real disappointment is that a date has not yet been announced for the next and ninth novel in the series. Charlaine Harris (who lives in the southern part of my native state of Arkansas) has a couple of other series and 2009 apparently is devoted to those. My hope is that perhaps the success of the TV show will cause Ms. Harris to revise her plans and bring out another Sookie Stackhouse sooner rather than later.

I will add that on some boards many fans of the books don't like Anna Paquin as Sookie. I do. She isn't quite the way the books describe Sookie, being slender and not at all voluptuous, whereas in the books Sookie is constantly described as curvy and very chesty. But I think Anna Paquin gets a lot of the spirit of Sookie. She feels in her performance very much like someone who has been traumatized by hearing the thoughts of others.

If you are a fan of TRUE BLOOD, you should definitely read these. I actually prefer the books to the TV show, though I like the show as well. But if you haven't watched the show, but enjoy well written book on supernatural themes, you should read these anyway. In the recent tradition of revisionist accounts of vampires, this is one of the best.

Kindle version seriously lacking

THIS IS STRICTLY FOR THE KINDLE VERSION ATTRIBUTES, not the books themselves. I purchased the kindle version thinking I would get 8 distinct books. But what I got was 1 MEGA Book, the table of contents only directs you to the 8 books, there is no way to navigate to the chapters within each book. With that being said I am eager to read the books and will review those once done.

I am hoping for a remedy of Kindle disaster.

Amazingly Addictive!

The Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris is truly one of the GREATEST book series I have EVER read (and I read a lot!). Each book is fast paced, clever, full of action, and more action, mysteries galore, love, romance, some sexy scenes (hee hee), and wit, humor, and sass! I got through this series very quickly because I truly could not put the books down. I would try and try to stop so that I could "save some reading for later", but I was just so addicted to the series and was always left wanting more by the numerous cliff hangers that I could NOT stop!

The Sookie Stackhouse novels are set in present times in a world where synthetic blood is created and perfected. Because of the synthetic bloods creation, it turns out that vampires are actually real, and they now feel that they can "come out of the coffin" and reveal themselves since they no longer need to be feared by humans (because they can just drink synthetic blood in stead of hunting humans). These books are a great escape that are written very well, I highly, highly recommend it!!!

P.S. I actually bought the OTHER box set which has only the first 7 books, this one has the newest in paperback From Dead To Worse, but this one obviously is better because you won't have to run to the store once you're on book 7 to get book 8 like I did!

About the Author
Robert (Lynn) Asprin was born in 1946. While he has written some stand alone novels such as Cold Cash War, Tambu, The Bug Wars and also the Duncan and Mallory Illustrated stories, Bob is best known for his series: The Myth Adventures of Aahz and Skeeve; the Phule novels; and, more recently, the Time Scout novels written with Linda Evans. He also edited the groundbreaking Thieves World anthologies with Lynn Abbey. His most recent collaboration is License Invoked written with Jody Lynn Nye. It is set in the French Quarter, New Orleans where he currently lives.

Peter J. Heck resides in Brooklyn, New York and is the author of Death on the Mississippi, another Twain mystery. His lifelong interest in Twain was sparked by his own uncanny resemblance to Samuel Clemens.

Don't Blame Asprin!!!!

Keep in mind, Asprin has been, due in part to some medical problems, writing some of his series with partners who (as I understand it) approached >him< requesting to move the stories along . . . and from what I understand, this is also the case with Peter J. Heck's involvement with the Phule series.

While I admit there has been a huge change within the books, I wouldn't consider it fair to judge all of Asprin's works, or even Heck's, by this series.

a terrible book!

I completely agree with the other reviews of this book. At one time, Aspirin was capable of turning out good books, but the writing style for the last few in this and the Myth series has really gone down hill when the writing was turned over to other authors.

This book is the worst of the lot - the plot is ridiculous and completely contrived. The characters are now indistinguishable from each other, and have lost the facets that made them interesting in the first two books.

About the Author
Marion Zimmer was born in Albany, NY, on June 3, 1930, and married Robert Alden Bradley in 1949. Mrs. Bradley received her B.A. in 1964 from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, then did graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1965-67.

She was a science fiction/fantasy fan from her middle teens, and made her first sale as an adjunct to an amateur fiction contest in Fantastic/Amazing Stories in 1949. She had written as long as she could remember, but wrote only for school magazines and fanzines until 1952, when she sold her first professional short story to Vortex Science Fiction. She wrote everything from science fiction to Gothics, but is probably best known for her Darkover novels.

In addition to her novels, Mrs. Bradley edited many magazines, amateur and professional, including Marion Zimmer Bradley's Fantasy Magazine, which she started in 1988. She also edited an annual anthology called Sword and Sorceress for DAW Books.

Over the years she turned more to fantasy; The House Between the Worlds, although a selection of the Science Fiction Book Club, was "fantasy undiluted". She wrote a novel of the women in the Arthurian legends -- Morgan Le Fay, the Lady of the Lake, and others -- entitled Mists of Avalon, which made the NY Times best seller list both in hardcover and trade paperback, and she also wrote The Firebrand, a novel about the women of the Trojan War. Her historical fantasy novels, The Forest House, Lady of Avalon, Mists of Avalon are prequels to Priestess of Avalon

She died in Berkeley, California on September 25, 1999, four days after suffering a major heart attack. She was survived by her brother, Leslie Zimmer; her sons, David Bradley and Patrick Breen; her daughter, Moira Stern; and her grandchildren.

the first Darkover novel

"The Planet Savers" is the very first Darkover novel written by Marion Zimmer Bradley. It is a rather slim volume, my copy only had 91 pages, but it tells a fairly complete story. While this novel doesn't seem to fit in with the other Darkover novels, it does help to explain a little bit about who the Trailmen are, which is never explained in any depth in other Darkover novels. Bradley also explains why this novel doesn't quite fit with the other Darkover novels and how this novel came to be in the forward to the book. It is fairly interesting to understand how Bradley conceptualized Darkover.

This short novel tells the story of the 48 year Trailmen Fever. This is a nasty plague like sickness that seems to crop up every 48 years in Darkover's history, and Darkover is about to enter into a plague year. Now that the Terrans are back on Darkover, they are determined to end the plague. But the only way to do that is to get the cooperation of the Trailmen who are immune (and might in some way be a carrier). The Trailmen are fiercely territorial and violent to trespassers. But as a young child the human (the Trailmen aren't considered completely human, I'd imagine more like Neanderthal Man) Dr Jason Allison was raised by the Trailmen and is being recruited to lead the expedition to ask for the help of the Trailment. But Dr Allison seems to suffer from multiple personalities. One is a doctor Jay Allison who is a talented Doctor, but doesn't remember the language of the Trailmen and is something of a wuss. The other is Jason, a rougher man who is fully at ease in physical situations and is still fluent in the language and culture of the Trailment. Somehow a Terran doctor is able to revert Jay to Jason and the adventure begins.

It is a decent enough novel, and it involves other characters familiar to the Darkover reader, in particular Regis Hastur, who is a major player in other novels. As a standalone Darkover novel, "The Planet Savers" isn't anything special and I would not recommend it to anyone who wasn't trying to read all of the Darkover novels (as I am).

What MZB thought of Sword of Aldones

Yes, I knew Marion. After helping me sell my first novel, House of Zeor, she became my writing mentor for many years, and I can safely say she taught me maybe 80% of what I know and today teach about writing -- maybe more -- in workshops such as the one at Westercon.
Sword of Aldones was my absolute all time favorite Darkover novel, and that's still true today -- which was a disappointment to MZB.
You see SoA was her first actual forray into attempting to take the embarrassingly juvenile "Sevener" series she wrote for personal amusement (as we today write Star Trek and Buffy stories)and turn it into a professional product.
It's sale was a milestone in her life and professional career -- but she always knew and felt that it had technical and structural flaws. She felt the characters did a lot of running around, and people, issues and things popped out of nowhere, and the whole thing lacked a central motivational backbone.
But you see - that is what I love about it.
I just made up all the missing parts and never missed them.
Thus while the rewrite of this part of Darkovan history is now the actual basis of the series, and SoA is ignored -- I found the rewrite less enjoyable because it told me the answers to all the unanswerable questions posed in SoA (which I had so much fun answering for myself).
Because MZB and I are so very - VERY - different people, of course what I made up to explain the inexplicable is very different from what she eventually supplied.
However, if you are as much of a Darkover fan as I am (I found Darkover when I was a Freshman at the U. of Calif at Berkeley - which is when I also discovered Theodore Bikel -- these two having literally changed my life) -- then you need to read and compare these two books and decide for yourself which is the actual foundation of the Darkover series.
At the same time you will discover one of the foundations of my own Sime Gen Universe, now available on amazon.com. Sime Gen: The Unity Trilogy is much more like Sword of Aldones than it is like Sharra's Exile.

Two books, a short story, and a "retrospective".

Let me start by saying that these are the first Darkover books I've ever read. Since they were the first ones published, it seems kind of appropriate. The two "novels" (they are short enough to be novellas) are THE PLANET SAVERS and THE SWORD OF ALDONES. Sandwiched in between those two is a short story called THE WATERFALL. Finally, we get an article written by Ms. Bradley regarding her feelings about the Darkover phenomenon.
Let's start with THE PLANET SAVERS. My first impression is that it was way too short. It was only 97 pages. Just as the characters started to get interesting, the story was over. There was no room for any character development aside from the main character and, so, the relationships he had with the others weren't very convincing. Not only this, but the action was too quick. It just seemed to happen so easily. I would have loved to see a lot more detail regarding their trek. It just seemed all to easy for them to succeed. Where was the adversity?
Next came THE WATERFALL. I have no idea what this story was about. The narration was terrible, the inner thoughts of the main character were nearly incomprehensible, and I had no understanding for her motivations. This is a terrible example of short story writing. I understand what happened in the story, but I don't understand why.
Then there was THE SWORD OF ALDONES. This was much longer than the first story in the book. Probably around 180 pages or so. While the story was very interesting, there were too many references to politics and history of both the world and the characters that weren't explained. I was getting a headache trying to follow all the people that were being talked about, but weren't even in the story. There relationships between all the characters were so convoluted and full of unexplained history that it was difficult to keep any of them straight. I'm sure the author had them all straight in her head as she was writing the story, but she did a terrible job of communicating them to the reader. Plus, I got the feeling that this was a pivotal story in the history of Darkover, but I just couldn't get a grip on why.
Finally, there is the DARKOVER RETROSPECTIVE by Ms. Bradley. This was, as near as I can tell, published in 1980 and so is a bit out of date. In it, she discusses the history behind the development of the Darkover saga and how it came to be. It's an interesting read for anyone who's read a lot of the books, but a lot of the significance was lost on me since I'd only read these two.
Anyway, if you're a fan of Darkover, this is probably a must have. If you're just starting out, you might want to try THE BLOODY SUN instead.

Best one yet

When I read the first book in this series, I thought that this was going to be one of those lightweight whimsy fantasy series that I'd probably lose interest in around the third book--the ones where nothing really changes, and each book is pretty much the same with new jokes. It is now abundantly clear that that was not what Green has in mind. The whimsy is still there, but it has receded into the background. Even by the standards of the private eye novel, where the hero generally gets beaten up somewhere along the line, things are beginning to get a bit grim. The Nightside is clearly more than an amusing backdrop for a fantasy private eye, and John Taylor is clearly far more than just a fantasy gumshoe. The series is clearly going somewhere serious, and right at this point, the prospects for a happy ending do not look particularly good.

Simon R. Green has a fine hand for this kind of fantasy, and can slide from whimsical to Lovecraftian often in the space of a few paragraphs. In tone, the series has the most in common with Gaiman's "American Gods" or Stross's "Atrocity Archives." John Taylor is a strong character, with just the right touch of moral ambiguity--is he a hero, or the agent of ultimate disaster? I am looking forward to the next book in the series with excitement.

I wish we could time travel in every book

While Sharper than a Serpents Tooth may have the better story Path Not Taken has the better environment, getting to see the Nightside as it was created to be is a real treat. It was good to see the Gods that inhabit the Street of the Gods in our present not as broken down forgotten wreaks but as real beings of power.

Take it from someone who read the series out of sequence do yourself a favor and read the story in sequence you will appreciate the ultimate resolution of this particular installment a heck of a lot more.

Dickson's vast Childe Cycle ( Soldier , Ask Not , The Final Encyclopedia ) is taken one further step with this story of a conceptual breakthrough by the Dorsai mercenary and philosopher Hal Mayne. The action is slim here as a frustrated Mayne, stymied in his efforts to conceive a strategy to save Old Earth from its overwhelming foe, the Others, visits the secretive, quasi-religious Chantry Guild on the planet Kultis. While absorbing their teaching, he helps the Guild evade local soldiers and has an unexpected meeting with his nemesis, Bleys Ahrens. Although the protagonist's quest and Dickson's conviction are generally engrossing, the novel suffers from many of the pitfalls of Dickson's other solemn, parable-like tales. In its weaker moments, the prose teeters toward psychobabble as bland superman Mayne pushes a reluctant human race toward a level where they "would have more, be more, and choose more wisely."

Gordon R. Dickson was the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author of many classics of fantasy and science fiction, most famously the Childe Cycle, which included such novels as "Tactics of Mistake, The Chantry Guild, The Final Encyclopedia, Young Bleys," and "Other."

David W. Wixon was Gordon R. Dickson's assistant for many years.

In reviewing the twentieth anniversary edition audiobook of Card s "Ender's Game", "Publishers Weekly" stated, "Rudnicki, with his lulling, sonorous voice, does a fine job articulating Ender's inner struggle between the kind, peaceful boy he wants to be and the savage, violent actions he is frequently forced to take." Rudnicki is also a stage actor and director.

The Chantry Guild

Excellent story. Read "Dorsai!" first--you will get more out of the book if you understand Donal's development and accomplishments. Unfortunately, a good many typos in the book may cloud the enjoyment of some readers; if such don't bother you, read it! and enjoy!

I was given this book a few years ago by a friend, and finally picked it up to read this summer. I have not read any other books in the "Childe Cycle" that this book is apparently part of, which perhaps is a big part of my reason for my poor impression of it.
At a basic level, there is an editorial sloppiness to the book. There were far too many sentences that clearly are missing words, as well as a couple of places where entire phrases were inadvertantly repeated in the same paragraph. Yes, it's a minor annoyance, but distracting just the same.
The author also does a bad job of giving background to readers who haven't read the previous books. I realize that coming into the middle of any series can be challenging, but even some basic introduction to important elements in the main characters' backgrounds is typical. I once made the mistake of picking up a relatively late book in Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series (Crown of Thorns) as my first, but I felt I eventually understood most of what I needed to in order to appreciate that book as a story on it's own. Not so with The Chantry Guild... Dickson is very haphazard about background, and as a result, the primary struggle in the book, the protagonist's (Hal's) effort to reach the "Creative Universe", is baffling and ultimately incomprehensible.
Or perhaps I'm being too generous by giving Dickson that out... even if I had read the rest of the series, I'm not sure it would make sense. Too much of the book is spent in rambling third-person narration describing Hal's internal monologue and thoughts as he grapples with this intangible metaphysical goal. It is hard to read, bogs down the other plots, and proves ultimately unsatisfying in that, despite being told over and over again that this task is the main character's life goal and is somehow tied to the fate of humanity, why or how is completely unclear. Perhaps by this point in the series we are supposed to be so attached to this character that seeing him achieve something very important to him is supposed to be satisfying to us by itself. But as a new reader, I didn't find myself caring about this guy much, and I want to know what the point of all the navel-gazing was and how it might actually help save humanity. In some ways, this plot is very derivative of Paul Atreides' messiah quest in Dune, and Dickson's work in this book suffers badly in comparison.
The more traditional plot in the book is not particularly noteworthy either. Dickson spends *130* pages on what is basically a small-scale action sequence that takes place over a day as the secret village Hal stays in is first threatened by enemy search parties and then caught up in rescuing a few of their own who are caught by the bad guys. The story moves excruciatingly slowly. Worse, all of the struggle and effort we are dragged through ultimately serves no clear narrative purpose, other than to physically exhaust the protagonist to the point that he can get a good night's sleep and have a breakthrough in his metaphysical journey. The "enemy" even finds them anyway as the result of very casually-noted aerial surveillance (setting up a highly contrived visit by the arch-nemesis), and the characters being rescued are discarded so quickly afterwards that we are never given the resolution of their personal stories, which Dickson had spewed many pages setting up.
Of course, it's not all bad. The "world" this story is set in is well-conceived and interesting, and there are some really innovative aspects of the protagonists' backgrounds. Refreshingly, relatively little time is spent on technology, and when he chooses to, Dickson can describe this world with clear and vivid images that one can easily imagine making a transition to a movie screen.
Overall, this is a weak book that, while potentially interesting to those who have become engrossed in the rest of the series, should be avoided by anyone else. It would be much better if it were a 100 pages shorter and provided a better explanation of what came before and the significance of the "Creative Universe".

The development of Hal and Amanda's relationship is intense.

If you like an epic, this series by Gordon R. Dickson is for you. The scope and intelligence of Dickson's writing can only be compared to Frank Herbert's Dune. The subtle development of Hal's and Bley's relationship is interesting. Dickson writes so that you do not feel the need to hate Hal's enemy, Bleys. Hal's relationship with Amanda also develops, but with more intensity, with the importance of Amanda's wisdom and thinking becoming more apparent. Hals develops a block in his thinking and travels to a Younger World to regain his "optimism", achieving this, he returns to the Final Encyclopedia to continue his epic battle with Bleys. It is now 1998 and I still see no new release continuing this grand story. I wait impatiently for the news of this release. I recommend The Final Encyclopedia as possibly one of the greatest science fiction books ever written. Mr. Dickson is a writer I would love to meet. Greg Smith gsls1@compuserve.com
