In this sequel to last year's well-received Deepsix, McDevitt tells a curiously old-fashioned tale of interstellar adventure. Reminiscent of Arthur C. Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama, the story sends veteran space pilot Priscilla "Hutch" Hutchins and a crew of rich, amateur SETI enthusiasts off on a star-hopping jaunt in search of the mysterious aliens who have placed a series of "stealthed" satellites around an unknown number of planets. After visiting several worlds, and losing two of her dilettantes to a murderous group of alien angels, Hutch follows the interstellar trail to a bizarre, obviously artificial planetary system. There, two spectacular gas giants orbit each other closely, partially sharing the same atmosphere, while a large moon circles them in a theoretically impossible circumpolar orbit. The explorers soon discover a number of puzzling alien artifacts, including a gigantic spaceship that fails to respond to their signals. First contact is McDevitt's favorite theme, and he's also good at creating large and rather spectacular astronomical phenomena. Where this novel falls short, however, is in the creation of characters. Hutch, beautiful and supremely competent, is an adequate hero, but virtually everyone else is a cartoon. The book abounds in foolhardy dilettantes, glory-hogging bureaucrats and capable space pilots. Oddly, in a novel set some 200 years in the future, McDevitt's cast is almost exclusively white and Anglo-Saxon. This is a serviceable enough space opera, but it operates far from the genre's cutting edge.

Action packed space odyssey...

This is one book that I found difficult to put down! True to his form, McDevitt asks the question: "Are we all alone?" Priscilla Hutchins (Hutch), yes from Deepsix fame, is back. Here she's Captain of a ship filled with passengers looking to make "first contact". What follows is a series of adventures and mishaps involving alien lifeforms, fantastic space scenary, interesting characters and inter-personal relationships and a rescue mission unlike anything previous. The Chindi (indian term for night spirit) a hugh spacecraft, provides the focus for the principal characters and, true to McDevitt form, additional food for thought, mystery and wonder.
McDevitt continues his hard science approach to his books along with his apparent interest in archaeology and archaeologists. All of these elements are combined with his central theme of "are we alone?" to give the reader a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience. Reading Deepsix prior to reading Chindi is not absolutely necessary, but might help the reader better understand Hutch and some of the references to Deepsix made in Chindi.

A Great Archaelogical Mystery

"Chindi" is the third novel in the Priscilla Hutchins series. The archaelogical mysteries continue.

"Hutch", as her friends call her, is fed up with her career as pilot. She gets all of the blame when things go wrong and none of the credit when things go right. She's been asked by her employer, the Science Academy, to pilot one last mission before landing a desk job: ferry the well heeled members of the "Contact Society", an E.T.-phile crowd, around in a ship they commissioned for the Academy on its maiden voyage to investigate a strange signal emanating from the vicinity of a neutron star.

We journey with the crew as they discover a network of stealth satellites engaged in the observation of several worlds. As Hutch and her passengers track down clues to who built the network and why, they visit several worlds in the network and even make first contact with a new alien species. It's significant in that most worlds explored in this series contain the ruins of long dead civilizations, with one or two exceptions.

One of Hutch's passengers is an ex-boyfriend. Readers of previous works know that Hutch has been unlucky in love. Her career doesn't leave much time on Earth for relationships. Interstellar pilot really gives a new meaning to long distance relationships. Most give up. Hutch's relationship with this ex, Tor, makes for an interesting sub-plot, though it takes a while to really develop.

I don't want to give away too much, but suffice it to say that the Contact Society may have bitten off more than it could chew. Fatal mishaps plague the expedition, but they press on. Their compelling need to get to the bottom of the mystery pushes them on. They're rewarded with the discovery of the "chindi," a massive starship that they believe is the key to the stealth satellite network. Despite everything that has gone wrong and Hutch's warnings, the remaining members of the Contact Society set out to make contact with the chindi. The story reaches its climax with Hutch setting out to rescue her passengers from the chindi after a surprise turn of events.

McDevitt's writing style returns to the top form he achieved with "Engines of God" and quite possibly surpasses it. While "Deepsix" was a bit of a disappointment to this reader, "Chindi" made up for it. While his ability to weave a good mystery has never been a problem, McDevitt's use of characterization in "Chindi" easily surpasses what he provided in the previous two novels in this series. And the level of action and suspense also return to the level presented in "Engines of God". This was a novel that I had a tough time putting down. Excellent work. Highly recommended.

A great sequel to two very good books!

I have had this and the other two books of this series for many years and have read them over and over. All are books that can easily stand alone, but enjoyment is enhanced if you have read the other two before reading this one. The same characters as in the two previous books make appearances in this one, joining the different story lines in a wonderfully entertaining way. The characters stay strong and individual, and one of the points I especially like about this series is that both men and women can enjoy equally as the characters of both sexes are equally remarkable, adding a wonderful dimension to the read. Priscilla and Shan, Val Con and Miri have all become like personal friends about whom I would love to read more!

Absolutely Wonderful - I Loved It!

Val Con yos'Phelium, future Delm of Clan Korval, Second Speaker to the House and former Agent of Change for the Department of the Interior and his lifemate, Miri Robertson, a former mercenary and bodyguard, were ordered not to be harmed by the Juntavas syndicate. However, personal interpretation of 'not be harmed' left Val Con and Miri on a broken-down spaceship in the middle of nowhere with the enemy Yxtrang ready to kill them for the hunk of junk they were sitting in. However, Val Con and Miri managed to rig something together and 'jumped' to one of the nearest planets - a backwater world named Vandar.
Vandar had no contact with the outside universe and didn't even know that other cultures existed. With no spaceships and no radio comm that they could use, Val Con and Miri tried to resign themselves to a long stay and set about learning the culture and the language. Meanwhile, Shan yos'Galan, Val Con's brother and his lifemate, Priscilla, began searching the galaxy for him, as did Edger and Sheather, Val Con's Clutch brothers. Back on Liad, Nova yos'Galan, Val Con's sister, had translated a cryptic message from Val Con that, while ensuring the Clan of the heir's survival, told them precious little else. But she did discover that the Department of the Interior, a department that seemed shrouded in mystery and determined to conquer the planet of Liad and from there, the universe, was also looking for Val Con. The more she investigated, the more interested the Department became in Clan Korval...until Nova was forced to call Plan B - retreat strategically, trust no one, prepare for all out war....
Carpe Diem is the 5th book in the Liaden series if you read them chronologically, which I recommend. As with the other books, I simply loved Lee & Miller's characters and world building. They spend time on the details and it shows that they have carefully thought out and executed another masterpiece. I really feel as if I know the Korval family and am taking a remedial course on Liaden etiquette, these books are that well written! If you enjoy any kind of science fiction or space opera then this book has something for you - great characters, lots of action, enemies on all sides, high tech battle sequences, romance, family relations, honor, and much, much more! You can read this book as a stand-alone novel, but I would not recommend it as you will miss a lot of background and spend the first part of the book just trying to keep track of who everyone is. Also, you definitely should not miss out on any book in the wonderful Liaden universe - all of them are very highly recommended!

Three centuries from now, a technologically induced catastrophe, the Nanocaust, makes Earth uninhabitable. Two versions of humanity—the Threshers, who live in a ring of habitats encircling Earth, and the Slashers, who inhabit the outer planets—each blame the other for the disaster. Both groups share access to a system of artificial wormholes, one of which turns out to contain a perfect copy of Earth, sealed off from the rest of the galaxy, at its far end. The Threshers send archeologist Verity Auger to investigate. On this subtly different version of Earth, Wendell Floyd, a second-rate detective and jazz musician living in Paris in the year 1959, is looking into a very odd murder. Then Auger shows up claiming to be the victim's sister and pursued by lethal creatures who look like decaying children. While Reynolds beautifully details this alternate-universe Paris and handles the developing mystery with aplomb, his Thresher and Slasher cultures lack depth and his climax feels a bit jury-rigged. Still, fans of sophisticated hard SF should be pleased.

Twenty-third-century Earth is an uninhabitable wasteland overrun by rogue nanotechnology. When archaeologist Verity Auger, studying the relics of twentieth- and twenty-first-century Earth, is accused of reckless endangerment after a child in her care nearly dies, shadowy government forces within her department offer her an out in the form of a mission to retrieve information from somewhere where her knowledge of the mid-twentieth century will be useful. Not until she is well underway do they inpart that her destination is an ALS (anomalous large structure) at the end of a wormhole in which 1950s Earth, slightly changed, is preserved. At that other end of the wormhole, Wendell Floyd is a Parisian PI working a case that gets stranger and more dangerous as he and partner Custine uncover the evidence, which is precisely the information Verity must fetch. The threads come together in a race to save both Earths from extremists, in which Verity and Floyd frantically search for the significance and location of three metal spheres. Alternative history that isn't really alt-history

I have some affection for Alastair Reynolds, but this book was a great trial to get through. I started reading it about six months ago and it never quite truly grabbed me and dragged me along. I ended up reading a few pages at a time and then putting it down. I did ultimately finish the book when I should probably have just parked it and forgotten about it.

A big part of the story surrounds a jazz musician/detective in an alternate world Paris coming into contact with a woman from the 22nd century. I can't say Reynolds isn't creative. He does a decent job rationalizing and making 'explicable' a completely loopy set-up. Rationalizing is perhaps one of his great strengths. Some of the action in this story is pretty well done, though --without getting into details-- I would also say it's somewhat by the numbers and not very surprising. This book may well appeal to people who like alternate history, but that's tempered by the fact that Reynolds is somewhat more interested in what happened to 'real' Paris in his future world than he is in how Paris of alternate history is significant. The alternate Paris more or less existed to be a source from which to pull a 1950s guy into a future world. The only thing that is ever really brought up as alternative about this world is that they haven't gone anywhere with computers because WWII didn't happen, but nothing deeper or more substantial than this.

There are a lot of little things in this story that felt very useless to me. The character Custine and most of plot involving people of the 'other' Paris is tacked on and left incomplete, jettisoned when the author decided he would rather be describing wormholes and talking about technospooge nanotechnology. This population is there and liable to be destroyed by the future people, but Custine in particular never gets a chance to prove his innocence or to face off against the war babies (and, speaking of whom, what the hell happened to them?) Floyd exists simply to be a POV character for the reader to look at a future world that he can't understand, but the author couldn't even completely commit to this strategy and had to flesh out the character Augier independently. The romantic attachment between Floyd and Augier is not believable at all in large part because the author interrupts believable chemistry by spending huge amounts of time explaining nuts and bolts of the technospung of their circumstance and having rather typical Reynoldsian question-answer sessions where one character interrogates while the other spurts technobabble answers --not conducive to romance. Their parting felt like a bad version of Casablanca. Floyd's otherness is never really exploited because the author spends so much effort trying to rationalize technology when he could have been supporting Floyd out of water. Is there any point where Floyd should ever ask a coherent question about space-time or wormholes? I would volunteer 'no.'

Further, the set-up of having earth preserved in amber at some node along a wormhole transit network got a big 'WTF?' response from me. What are the odds that humans will wander out into a galactic scale subway network and tumble over a clone of Earth? Stratospherically impossible maybe? There are about a billion more believable discoveries out there that we would spend time on first, I think. Even if all ALS bodies contain the home worlds of alien races, what are the chances that humans stumble onto Earth first? While the author did a decent job of rationalizing that maybe it's possible, the setup is just so improbable that if the author fails to suspend belief, a reader is going to have some difficulty with this. I was not surprised that the author didn't bother talking about the origin of the ALS structures mainly because he tends to inhabit a universe where god technology is sitting abandoned at every corner, but it's kind of sad that he never seems to feel obligated to finish one of these stories.

One might also note that this story did not age well even in the dozen or so years since it was written. He has a lot of view screens and keyboards... which seem trite considering the touchscreen tablet computer I'm writing this review on.

I've never read anything quite like Alistair Reynolds's astonishing "Century Rain." A noir whodunnit that turns into a spy chase that turns into a space opera of epic proportions, it's set several centuries from now, where the Earth has suffered some sort of biological castrophe instigated by the law of unintended consequences. It features two competing human factions, the Threshers (essentially preservationists) and the Slashers (the techies--themselves divided into two factions) who are at odds.

At first, most of the action takes place on an alternate earth, E2 (one of the characters speculates it's a backup of our earth), preserved in quantum amber, that diverged from our earth in 1940, when Hitler's invasion of France was stopped by the French (Hitler is seen briefly as a sick wheelchair-bound aging prisoner). As a result, the technological advances instigated by WWII never happened here, where it is now a technologically stagnant 1959.

The first quarter or so of the book is told from two different points of view in alternate chapters. In one sequence, we follow Thresher Verity Auger, who's sent via wormhole transport to this E2 in order to learn what happened to one of their agents, Susan White. We know, however, that she has either fallen or been pushed off a balcony. We know this because:

The other POV is that of a local private eye named Wendell Floyd, who moonlights as a jazz musician. He takes the case after the Paris police seem uninterested in learning whether White jumped or was pushed, but her landlord-friend is, and hires Floyd to investigate. Finally, Auger and Floyd meet, the POVs merge, and the story tumbles off.

Mr. Reynolds, whose Revelation Space series speculated brilliantly on a high-tech future, this time tries to re-create a mid-20th-century space opera (maybe you'll have fun figuring out where John W. Campbell would have placed the "continued next month" break if he'd serialized this in "Analog") all the while riffing on scientific knowledge of today. The craft that goes through the wormhole, for example, features pistons and analog dials that glow red when what they measure is dangerous, and green when they're safe. And the Threshers communicate via p-mail--printed paper sent via pneumatic tubes (eventually you'll learn why).

After Auger and Floyd meet, there's much snappy noir dialogue, and various secrets are revealed during a chase sequence. (There are many chase sequences.) It's great fun; it's meant to be enjoyed, but probably not analyzed.

This is a standalone, but there are enough loose ends for a sequel, if Mr. Reynolds is so inclined.

All the earmarks of an early novel -- not remotely in the class of Revelation Space series in terms of plot sophistication, crafting of cultures, motivation of characters and such.

In fact "Century Rain", when stood next to Reynolds supposedly earlier books, is so much less an effort, that it smells of a cheap publisher scam -- find some unpublished early work by newly acclaimed writer, spruce it up a bit and publish it as a later work.

Almost half the novel is smothered in a tedious and embarrassingly ill constructed "out of the frying pan" sequence where the two protagonists escape from one increasingly improbable death defying situation only to land in an even worse mess

Scant attention is paid to the pace, detail, nuance and character motivation that made Reynolds wonderous Revelation Space series the gold standard of hard SF.

On the whole, I want my money back!!

About the Author
Robert Anson Heinlein was born in Missouri in 1907, and was raised there. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1929, but was forced by illness to retire from the Navy in 1934. He settled in California and over the next five years held a variety of jobs while doing post-graduate work in mathematics and physics at the University of California. In 1939 he sold his first science fiction story to Astounding magazine and soon devoted himself to the genre.

He was a four-time winner of the Hugo Award for his novels Stranger in a Strange Land (1961), Starship Troopers (1959), Double Star (1956), and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (1966). His Future History series, incorporating both short stories and novels, was first mapped out in 1941. The series charts the social, political, and technological changes shaping human society from the present through several centuries into the future.

Robert A. Heinlein's books were among the first works of science fiction to reach bestseller status in both hardcover and paperback. he continued to work into his eighties, and his work never ceased to amaze, to entertain, and to generate controversy. By the time hed died, in 1988, it was evident that he was one of the formative talents of science fiction: a writer whose unique vision, unflagging energy, and persistence, over the course of five decades, made a great impact on the American mind.

Future History In Order

This is a fantastic collection. To begin with, almost the entire contents of the two collections ("The Green Hills of Earth" and "The Man Who Sold the Moon") are here ("Let There Be Light" is not included). Next there is "Searchlight" a short vignette which Heinlein wrote as part of an advertisement for Hoffman Electronics. In addition there is "The Menace From Earth", "If This Goes On-", "Coventry", "Misfit", and the novel "Methuselah's Children. All in all, over 800 pages of stories from Heinlein's Future History.

This collection of Future History stories was published in 1967, and while the claim made on the back cover of having all the Future History works included is not true, it is a truly great collection of 21 of them. A couple of the missing ones include the aforementioned "Let There Be Light", and "Farmer in the Sky", and there may be some other ones which I have forgotten. The stories were all written between 1939 and 1962, with the majority of the work coming from the 40s. Here is a list of the included material, along with some of the recognition it has received:

The stories are presented in Future History chronological order. The first story "Life-Line", takes place in 1951, and Methuselah's Children leaves us approaching the 23rd century. This is an outstanding collection of stories, from what many feel is the greatest science fiction writer of all time.

The complete Future History in one book

The Past Through Tomorrow contains all 21 stories, novellas, and novels of Heinlein's Future History series. The four books making up the series (The Man Who Sold the Moon, The Green Hills of Earth, Revolt in 2100, and Methuselah's Children) used to be a little hard to find in the pre-Internet days, making this collection an absolute boon to Heinlein readers. In addition to the convenience of having everything in one volume, this book also includes two stories that are not to be found in my copies of the originating books: "Searchlight" and "The Menace From Earth." These are rather lightweight stories, but they are quite entertaining.
It was actually Joseph W. Campbell, Heinlein's editor at Amazing Science-Fiction, who came up with the term Future History; Heinlein did have some of the stories mapped out on a timeline, but he never intended to make this a series in any real sense of the word. Up until the final selection, these stories are largely independent of one another. With Methuselah's Children, however, Heinlein traces the tale's antecedents to his very first story "Life-Line," incorporates a few characters from other assorted stories, and casts a web of continuity over the whole package. Even still, this is only "a" future history, not "the" future history. Aspects of Heinlein's science indeed worked its way into the real world over time, but one would be wrong to label this body of work as some type of prophetic endeavor on the author's part.
The contents of this collection basically offer the reader the cream of the crop of Heinlein's early fiction. Among the stories deserving special mention here are the novella "The Man Who Sold the Moon," featuring one of Heinlein's most unforgettable protagonists, "-We Also Walk Dogs," the story of a company able to perform small miracles to meet the needs of its clients, "If This Goes On-," a tale of the repressive theocracy that followed in the wake of evangelist Nehemiah Scudder usurpation of power, and the novel Methuselah's Children which brings the vision of these stories all together. I have only one criticism of this fine collection: no special mention is made of the century-long gap between "Logic of Empire" and "If This Goes On-." The fall of American democracy at the usurping hands of Scudder is a story that Heinlein never told, so the reader may be shocked to find a forward-looking free America suddenly transformed into an anachronistic, brutal autocratic regime at the start of the latter of these two stories. In my copy of Revolt in 2100, Heinlein includes a postscript concerning the stories never written-this does much to explain the striking transition that defines the "missing century" of this Future History, and it's a shame that this postscript did not find its way into this omnibus collection.
The Past Through Tomorrow serves as a wonderfully useful map to the writing of Robert A. Heinlein. Not only does it contain the most important of his early short stories, it also sets the stage and provides the background material for Heinlein's later novels featuring the likes of the remarkable Lazarus Long.

Frances Comes of Age in Small Scottish Village...

Frances Field is an orphan raised by her aunt and uncle in London. Her aunt was not abusive but was extremely selfish and domineering. Frances is a gentle girl and simply could not develop her own personality under such an influence. With the help of a local doctor and the Blitz, Frances goes out on her own at 25 years of age during the WWII. She saw a postcard of the village of Cairn in Scotland and decides to take a holiday there. She meets an very interesting cast of village characters as well as having an army encampment with several officers and their wives to get to know. How she makes her new life is a cozy read for a cold day.

The epic series concludes

It may not have been his intent, but fate has made Chapterhouse Dune the last book in Frank Herbert's Dune series. There may be others, and they may even be good (I haven't yet read them), but this book represents Herbert's final words on the subject. Although not perfect, and definitely leaving things open for another book, this is, overall, a worthy addition to the series.
In this book - a direct sequel to Heretics of Dune with many of the same characters - the Bene Gesserit sisterhood is under siege, threatened by the Honored Matres, a somewhat darker version of their own organization, that is sweeping viciously across the galaxy like a barbarian horde. With the original Dune lifeless after a Matres attack, the Bene Gesserit are trying to create a similar world out of their headquarters. Although they don't think of it in those terms, they are really trying to create a planetary ghola, a clone similar to that of recurring character Duncan Idaho. The book focuses on the war between the two sisterhoods.
The book does have its flaws. The rather open-ended conclusion may be forgiven if we believe that Herbert had another book intended. The characters are, as usual, overly serious and everything they do is filled with hidden meanings. Also, there is a feeling that Herbert was making up parts of this story as he goes along, with new movements suddenly appearing (such as the futuristic Jews who have never been previously mentioned although they have supposedly always been around).
In the end, what is the central point or character of this series? Is it a history of the Bene Gesserit, the House Atreides, Duncan Idaho or some combination of all these. My feeling that the center of this saga is the Tyrant Leto, with the first trilogy (Dune, Dune Messiah and Children of Dune) a story of his origin, the central book (God Emperor) the tale of his emperorship, and the final trilogy (Heretics, Chapterhouse and an intended final book) to be the story of Leto's Golden Path.
That is my theory. Whatever your own ideas, if you have enjoyed the previous books, you should enjoy this one also and when you conclude it, you will have read one of the most significant series in science fiction.

A brilliant ending to the whole series

This book basically carries on from where Heretics Of Dune hardly stopped. But now the Honoured Matres, instead of simply holding a slight distaste for the Bene Gesserit, are head-hunting, searching out the original sisterhood's home planet: Chapter House Planet.
Already the Honoured Matres have laid bloody waste to dozens of Bene Gesserit planets, and the new Mother Superior (an Atreides with wild talent) can sense that the hunters are getting closer. So she hatches a radical plan that puts the entire sisterhood at risk, in the hope of finally punishing the Honoured Matres.
And brilliant it all is too. This is easily my second-favourite from the whole series (after Dune). After an initially slow lead up (one of Herbert's defining features, it seems) we get violently thrown into action, watching in breathless silence as the final conflict hits us.
As is always the way, you'll never know what is going to happen, never know who next will feel the chill of death, and you'll wow at one shock after another.
Suddenly, and quite unexpectedly, this last book suddenly made me stop seing the Dune series as a set of six books. The second-to-last chapter oh-so suddenly made me see the whole series as one story, made me see the pattern, told a story beyond the ending of Chapterhouse Dune. And I enjoyed it all very much.
As for the last chapter. Well. I've still no idea what to make of it. It's such an intriguing and unexpected last two pages. If anyone knows what it's about, what the hidden message is, I'd love to know.
It's worth reading the whole series just to get to this book. Read it all. The rewards for a sci-fi fan are better experienced than listened to. Go find out. Now. You'll never find a better series of books.

Chapterhouse: Dune -- The Sorcerer of Dune

[Nota Bene: As Frank Herbert's last two published novels in the Dune series, Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune, along with the unwritten Dune 7, in fact comprise a single story that happened to be divided into three parts, I'll post the same review for both of the two published volumes. This review contains no spoilers.]

During the first half of his literary career, Frank Herbert focused most on coming to terms with what it meant to be conscious. The evolution of his thinking on the subject can be traced from real-world events which happened to him in his youth, through his earliest published science fiction stories, crude as they were, and on into novels like The Dragon in the Sea and the stories that would coalesce into The Godmakers, and certainly The Santaroga Barrier and Destination: Void. This line of thinking reached its fruition in the novels Dune and Dune Messiah.

Having expanded his understanding of the full spectrum of consciousness about as far as it could go (although admittedly he never stopped tinkering with the subject), in the second half of his career Herbert refocused his attention on how the limitations imposed upon individual consciousness - or perhaps it might be better to say the limited perspective encompassing a single human lifetime - leaves humanity ill-equipped to confront an infinite and ever-changing universe. In effect we end up in a continuous crisis mode, always vainly insisting that the world of tomorrow conform to the expectations of yesterday. We're persistently and comically always shocked to discover our assumptions are wrong. Elsewhere I have described this aspect of Herbert's thinking, the human failure to deal with, or even to recognize, the implications of an unbounded universe, as an absolute-infinity breach. This theme begins to emerge in Children of Dune and is especially prominent in God Emperor of Dune, for a final surmounting of the absolute-infinity breach is the primary target of Leto II's Golden Path. But we also encounter the concern in Herbert's final trilogy: Heretics of Dune, Chapterhouse: Dune, and (by implication) in the unwritten Dune 7.

It is a hallmark of Herbert's imagination that he pursues an ever-elaborating expanse of concerns, always tracing a spectral pathway across a continuum of broadening bandwidth, chasing after considerations of widening implications across grander and grander scales of magnitude. An original interest in a fleeting moment of hyperconsciousness ultimately led Herbert into defining consciousness, hyperconsciousness and subconsciousness in all their aspects and dramatizing what he had learned and concluded in his stories; likewise his contemplations of the diverse implications of the absolute-infinity breach. And it might be added that he pushed his spectral analytical approach through time as well, so the Dune saga becomes probably the most temporally discontinuous series ever written. The first three novels take place roughly around the year 21,200 AD. The drama of God Emperor of Dune unfolds 3,500 years later, and that of the last three books (Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune are difficult novels, and attempting to distinguish them as separate novels, or independent from the unwritten Dune 7, is an artificial and arbitrary exercise) takes place an additional 1,500 years after that, placing us circa 26,200 AD.

As the primary goal of Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune was to shatter the innate mythmaking in humanity that compels us to conservative convergence, these last three books are intended to unveil the consequences of living in a multiverse that has become irreparably divergent. This divergence followed in the wake of the downfall of the God Emperor and the subsequent Scattering of humanity not throughout multiple star systems or galaxies, but across multiple universes which are discontinuous with one another. Any threat can now come upon our heroes and heroines from any direction, but with all the eggs no longer in one basket, no matter what catastrophe might befall locally, the whole story can never come to a final end.

In Heretics of Dune (1984) and Chapterhouse: Dune (1985), the Bene Gesserit has recovered substantially from the tribulation of the era of the God Emperor, and now we're allowed a far more intensive view of the inner workings of the Sisterhood than ever before. But the Bene Gesserit and the remnants of the old Imperium, as ever, are confronted by a host of power-hungry enemies, new and old, in the usual style of Herbert's Machiavellian plotting. It is these plots-within-plots that seemingly all other reviewers have focused on, and I'll forego doing the same here.

Herbert said it wasn't until he was writing Children of Dune that he came to understand that an important role of an author was to entertain his readership. That will come as surprising news to some of you who like Herbert, and not to some of you who don't. But it's important to note that the word "entertainment" carries different connotations for readers than it does for hacks or more seriously-aspiring authors. Entertainment is something that is doled out to the action-adventure-thriller crowd, to those who love reading or going to the movies in no small part for the sheer escapism of the thing. Now I'm not overly bigoted about this. There's nothing more boring than a book that's, well, boring. But I think what Herbert was getting at was that as he matured as a writer he came to see, as many writers do, that plot per se is less interesting than character, no matter how many car chases or lasgun exchanges are involved.

I for one can't separate a reading of the last books of the Dune series from knowledge of what was going on in Herbert's life as he wrote them, which he did, by that way, at an absolutely furious pace. This happened to be during the most stressful part of his entire life. His wife, Beverly, had been dying for ten years, and the last two years of her life were especially painful for her and for her husband, both physically and emotionally. I believe that, had he lived, Frank Herbert would have easily written the Dune 7 novel to complete the series. I am less sanguine that he could ever have written another coherent novel after that one.

By the time God Emperor of Dune was published in 1981, and with the signed contracts for the later Dune novels in hand, Herbert was financially secure but, as I've suggested, he was suffering from increasing emotional instability. Furthermore, I can't help believing he was struck by a supreme irony, which is that, like Paul Maud'Dib, he now found himself hemmed in by the conservative mythology of his own image which he himself had created. To this day you can still see this in reviews of his later books, wherein readers who were born after Herbert's death still bemoan the fact that his later books are not like Dune in style. Everyone wanted, and continues to want, Frank Herbert to write books that seem like quote-unquote Frank Herbert books: everyone wanted, and wants, Herbert to remain frozen unchanging in 1965. But in his later years Herbert, with his financial security, felt free to try to break out of that myth regardless of the demands and expectations of his fans, and for this I applaud him. I'm sure he did have basic plot elements in mind for the last three books of the series - call this the "entertainment" necessary to bring the masses along - but it's quite obvious that he had already grown more interested in character development than in weaving such masterful webs of palace intrigue anymore.

Herbert wanted to change course, but he had not yet found a new direction. I see hints of this in Children of Dune, in which Duncan Idaho tells Alia about the practice of setting out blocks of marble in the desert to be etched by the blowing sand of a Coriolis storm. Idaho argues that the sculpted pieces produced are beautiful but they are not art, as they are not carved according to human volition. But in the latter books it is Sheeana who creates an abstract sculpture she calls "The Void," which is art. How might these two kinds of sculpture compare? What is the symbolic significance of Sheeana's abstract work? The question is particularly relevant, it seems to me, when Sheeana's piece is recognized as a symbol set in tension with a Van Gogh which, at the end of Chapterhouse: Dune is carted off into a new, uncharted universe. Clearly, I think, the matter can be read as a form of self-psychoanalysis undertaken by the author. "The Void" is the primitive and unformed new expression welling up inside him; the old and familiar, even conventional Van Gogh has been let slip away with a fond farewell.

A kind of quantum uncertainty pervades Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune which are, after all, a single story occupying multiple volumes. We do not have enough pieces to interpret this story, which must therefore remain finally unadjudicated and unjudgeable. This is because the unwritten Dune 7 was also to have comprised a full third of the complete tale. We can see that Herbert was bending writing to a new direction, and we can hazard some educated guesses about (entertaining) plot elements that would have informed the third book, but we can never know. The best we can do is ponder any written records or notes that Herbert may have left behind as poles in the sand to mark the path he intended to follow. Anyone who possesses any such notes, it seems to me, can be a good steward to the memory of Frank Herbert only by publishing them in unexpurgated form: lacking that, Herbert's career accomplishments can never be properly assessed. And that is an injustice to an important 20th century American writer.

Wow! One of the best books I have ever read!

When my grandmother gave "The Rowan" to me (I love books), I turned it over and read the back. I was skeptical and not sure about it. I am not in to sci-fi but more into fantasy. I took it with me to my highschool testing and when I was done with it I took it out and started reading. When it was time to go on testing I couldn't put it down. I found the inter-space world Anne McCaffrey created had intwined me and caught me in its wondrous atmosphere. The story of a young powerful teleknetic orphan held me on the edge of my seat. The emotions and experiences of the young girl soon known as the Rowan wow'd me and made me see sci-fi in a new light. I keep it among my other favorites such as: Dragonlance series, the Chronicles of Narnia, and the Myst series. Amazing like no other book I couldn't believe how it still held my attention months later as I wondered about some of the events. The advanced world of earth and outer colonies was the future and AM had brought it to life with the powerful teleknetic minds of the FT&T it made me wish for more. The colorful worlds and wonders of the Rowan and her story is a true work of art. If you want to start a great series start reading the "Rowan" series. Truly excellents books probably Anne's best works ever.

The start of a very interesting Talent series!

Although there are actually about 3 "prequels" to this book including "To Ride Pegasus", "Pegasus in Flight" and "Pegasus in Space", the prequels are several generations before "The Rowan" but do give a nice background/foundation. I highly recommend reading the prequels as they are a nice series in and of themselves.

The Rowan is orphaned at 3 years old on Altair during a horrible mudslide which wipes out her family and an entire mining camp except her. She is heard and rescued because she is a very strong "Talent" -- a person with strong psi skills and in this case, telepathing (as well as telekinesis and teleport as shown later in the book). Her mental crying and shouting is heard throughout the planet by even minor Talents. The Prime, Siglen, on Altair has an inner ear condition which makes her violently ill when trying to travel in space. Siglen has inhibited all of the Primes (a T-1 or strongest of the Talents) she has trained so far and when they propose to send the Rowan to Earth for training she scares her as does the Rowan's past experiences. Thus Siglen and a host of other nurse/psychologists/engineers train the Rowan until she is ready for a Tower of her own.

She lands a post on Callisto, a moon of Jupiter, where there is a domed environment. The Rowan being very temperamental takes a few years to get her staff together finally setting on Afra of Capella for her T-3 assistant. She is contacted by a untrained Prime on the far out colony world of Deneb which is being invaded first by bio-warfare and then missiles by ruthless aliens. Even though she hasn't met this new Prime, she is drawn to him by his sense of humor and voice and charm. Jeff Raven, the new Prime, is not inhibited and can easily 'port himself to Callisto so they finally meet. The Rowan finally overcomes her fears when Jeff is very critically wounded by shrapnel from a leftover missile that landed on Deneb.

I like the love story and actually found it believable -- but maybe I am naive. As a mom of 6, I also loved the feelings expressed by the Rowan for her impending motherhood and the beginning of her maturity and her nurturing nature and love of family.

I recommend reading this and the books that follow!!

Classic McCaffrey

Years ago, I read a story by Anne McCaffrey that she later expanded into this novel. From there she went on to write a series of books about the dynasty of telepathic/telekinetic "Talents" founded by Altair's Angharad Gwyn (a/k/a "the Rowan") and Deneb's Jeff Raven. I've somehow managed to read Book One of the series last, but the story on which McCaffrey based it was so memorable that I almost thought I'd read it already. Until I noticed its copyright date, and realized that couldn't be true!

Orphaned at age three, little Angharad Gwyn has her memories of those first years of her life blocked by rescuers who desperately need to silence the child's telephathic cries for her dead parents. Since she therefore can't even remember her name, she comes to be called "the Rowan child" - for the mining company whose remote work site has fallen victim to a landslide, of which this little girl is the sole survivor. Hers is the strongest Talent that the Human colony-world Altair has yet bred, and she's immediately marked for training as a tower-dwelling Prime. She'll spend her adult life shifting cargo containers and passenger vessels, and military units as well, from one star system to another. Instantly, across light years of space. The Rowan's future looks bright, but lonely; because when Primes travel between worlds, they suffer horribly. Everyone knows that's true. Everyone, that is, except Jeff Raven - a "wild" Talent on far-off Deneb, who calls out to the Rowan for help when an alien invasion force bears down on his colony.

This is classic McCaffrey. Science fiction romance, published before anyone identified the sub-genre as such, with an intriguing "villian" in the alien invaders whose nature the rest of the series continues to explore. While I'm not generally fond of SF that accepts traditional gender roles as necessary to the point of being inevitable, I always wind up enjoying McCaffrey's books anyway. They're fun reads. The Rowan is no exception. I'm glad I finally caught up with it.
