From Publishers Weekly
In this alternately chilling and hilarious sequel to The Atrocity Archives (2004) from Hugo-winner Stross, Bob Howard is a computer übergeek employed by the Laundry, a secret British agency assigned to clean up incursions from other realities caused by the inadvertent manipulation of complex mathematical equations: in other words, magic. In 1975, the CIA used Howard Hughes's Glomar Explorer in a bungled attempt to raise a sunken Soviet submarine in order to access the Jennifer Morgue, an occult device that allows communication with the dead. Now a ruthless billionaire intends to try again, even if by doing so he awakens the Great Old Ones, who thwarted the earlier expedition. It's up to Bob and a collection of British eccentrics even Monty Python would consider odd to stop the bad guy and save the world, while getting receipts for all expenditures or else face the most dreaded menace of all: the Laundry's own auditors. Stross has a marvelous time making eldritch horror appear commonplace in the face of bureaucracy. (Dec.)

A scary send-up of Lovecraft, Bond, and Cold War spy novels
By Terrell T. Gibbs
Like it's predecessor, "The Atrocity Archives," "The Jennifer Morgue" is based upon the premise that all of those nasty Lovecraftian horrors are real, all of the world governments know about it, and are engaged in an ongoing and highly secret occult intelligence gathering/arms race. A few other writers have mined this same vein, most notably Tim Powers in "Declare." But in contrast to Powers, Stross leaves no doubt that his tongue is firmly planted in cheek. The current volume is not only a send up of the cold war spy novel, but specifically of James Bond. Fortunately, Stross has the extraordinarily rare ability to satirize a genre without losing sight of what makes that genre work. Stross's Lovecraftian horrors are actually scary--in fact more so than those of most other writers who've tried to write serious Lovecraftian horror (which turns out to be surprisingly difficult to pull off). The cold war style intrigue, with intricately layered plots and counterplots also works beautifully. Stross could doubtless be a master of either genre if he could bring himself to take them seriously. But that's alright, because this is better. Much of the humor comes from Stross's hero and narrator, a cynical hacker forcibly inducted into the British occult intelligence service. As such, he is completely out of place in either of the genre's Stross is satirizing (watching him try to fit into a Bond-type plot is particularly amusing), yet in the world Stross has created for us, he is clearly the perfect man for the job. Along the way, Stross manages a particularly sharp (but somehow affectionate) deconstruction of the entire Bond canon.

I'd encourage Stross to drop everything else and devote all of his time to writing sequels in this series, except there's nothing else that he writes that I'd be willing to give up. Still, none of his other work manages to be quite this much fun.

The Perfect Novel - For The Right Reader
By A. W. Crawford
If you liked The Atrocity Archives, you'll love The Jennifer Morgue. If some of the more geeky computer references confused you, you'll still enjoy the basic story here (everybody's seen James Bond movies, after all) but again you'll be missing half the fun.

As another reviewer has indicated, to get full appreciation of every little nuance, you need to be an old school UNIX geek, preferably with a familiarity with the Internet that stretches back a decade or two, who still yearns for the days when USENET ruled, and before The Eternal September began.

Not meeting all these criteria doesn't mean you won't find this hugely enjoyable, but the more of them you meet, the more you'll enjoy the book. Having known Charlie since before he'd had anything published and used to hang out in some of the seedier USENET groups, I think I fall fairly firmly into the target audience, and even I missed one or two of the cleverer references first time round. However, I read the book cover to cover in a single sitting and enjoyed every page. Multiple re-reads are a must, the cover's as superb a homage to the book's influences as the story itself, and the story itself leaves an impressive number of openings for more Bob Howards books, from direct tie-ins to the implications of GREEN NIGHTMARE, which Charlie seems to have put in place specifically to give him a way to shut down the Bob Howard universe completely should he ever tire of writing about the character.

Personally, I hope he doesn't tire of writing about Bob for a long, long time. Haven't enjoyed a book so much in years. In fact, although it's a very different sort of book, the last thing I read that established a permanent niche for itself in my mind so quickly was Pratchett/Gaiman's Good Omens in the early 90s. I'm picky about what I read, and I place these two books in a separate little league, all of their own.

SciFi would be on top, if all novels were like this...
By Cypherpunk
This novel actually creeped me out a few times and had me rolling on the floor with laughter most of the time. SciFi would be the topseller in genre fiction, if more novels were like this one. Stross skewers James Bond, flips the Lovecraft style horror novels on their ear, infuses some of the best IT and hacker details that I've read in a novel, incorporates a pretty good love story paired with a perfectly frightening stalking, all while careening hilariously through a landscape littered with zombies, creatures from the deep, creatures from the universe's deep past, and more.
This novel provides one blisteringly hot answer to those readers who complain that there's not much new or fresh in SciFi. I say you're looking for authors on the wrong side of the pond. Some of the best SF to be found, these days, is coming from Britain (Scotland, in Stross' case).

The Birth of Higher Ed
By NoVAReader
The medieval university represented a delicate balance between four forces: the Church, the host town, the state, the faculty and the students. The Church, the town and the state imposed various rules on the faculty and students, as you might expect. Unlike the universities of today, though, the medieval students held great sway over their schools. If they did not like the teaching or the faculty or various other things about the university, they could easily go to another school or cause a local disturbance. Riots involving students and townspeople were not uncommon. While the students were by no means spoiled, the universities made sure that they were fairly happy. The faculty had quite a bit of control over curriculum, even to the point of teaching forbidden subjects such as Roman law and secular philosophy.

This is a very interesting book, not unlike Haskins' The Rise of Universities (Foundations of Higher Education). It's pretty short at about 200 pages. Unlike Haskins, Wieruszkowsi goes into quite a bit of detail on the personalities that were instrumental in forming the leading universities of Europe. She also does a nice job of explaining the relationships between the universities.

Animal Feed Formulation: Economic and Computer Applications (Plant & Animal Science), by Gene M. Pesti, Bill R. Miller

Students in animal science, industry personnel involved in the feeding of animals, and professionals working for feed-mixing companies will all benefit from this current, comprehensive package - a text on the economic and nutritional aspects of feed formulations that optimize nutritional content while minimizing costs.
Animal Feed Formulation applies a well-tested, easy-to-use computer program called UFFDA that illustrates the principles of least-cost food formulation. Developed in a cooperative effort by the Departments of Poultry Science and Agricultural and Applied Economics at the University of Georgia, UFFDA is menu-driven software that has the editing capabilities of a spreadsheet program for altering the ingredient and nutrient matrix.
The book begins by solving a simple ration-balancing problem, providing step-by-step instructions with the computer program that any user - even one without computer training - can readily follow. It then discusses specific feed formulation techniques in terms of their practical applications and economic implications. Included are such techniques as sensitivity analysis, parametric cost and nutrient ranging, optimum-density formulation, multi-blending, and risk analysis, among others. Applying these and other techniques using the special features of UFFDA, users can select the proper ingredients, adjust proportions among nutrients, determine which feeds might require scarce ingredients, consider the risks involved in dealing with ingredients with below-average compositions, and ultimately determine the costs and nutritional content of various feed formulations. The program can be applied to determining feed formulations for any animal, including sheep, beef and dairy cattle, swine, turkeys, broilers, catfish, and horses.
Practitioners who are growing animals will be able to maximize the nutritional content of their feed while keeping costs down. Professionals working in feed-mixing companies will be able to maximize profits by offering products composed of low-cost ingredients that are also of good nutritional value. Students will gain a firm background in nutritional and economic concepts, insight into how to apply them to practical problems, and an understanding of the way good nutrition and good value can be achieved by applying the latest computer technology.

Conan meets up with both Atali and Bêlit in his twenties
By Lawrance Bernabo
Frank Frazetta's cover art for "Conan of Cimmeria" stands out from the works the artist did for the Lancer paperbacks that reprinted Robert E. Howard's Conan stories in the 1960s. This is because it was one of the rare times that Frazetta's art actually represented a story contained in the collection, in this case the best of the bunch, "The Frost Giant's Daughter." The stories in this volume 2 of the Conan paperbacks cover when the young barbarian was in his middle- and late-twenties. It consists of not only several Conan stories by Howard, but stories rewritten, revised, and created by L. Sprague de Camp and/or Lin Carter:

"The Curse of the Monolith" by de Camp and Lin Carter, has Conan serving as a captain in the Turanian army and being sent by the generals of King Yildiz on a dangerous mission to Khitai. This is a good example of a story that fills in a gap and is nothing special.

"The Bloodstained God" was originally written by Howard as a Kirby O'Donnell story, "The Trail of the Blood-Stained God," and set in modern Afghanistan, with de Camp rewriting it to make it a Conan tale. Conan has to desert from the Turanian army and he ends up looking for treasure in the Kezankian Mountains, along the eastern borders of Zamora. Another okay story filling a gap.

"The Frost Giant's Daughter" was originally published in 1934 as "Gods of the North," and then revised by both Howard and alter de Camp. The story takes place after Conan returns home to Cimmeria and then joining the Aesir for a raid into Vanaheim where in the aftermath of a battle he meets a beautiful naked woman, who leads him into a trap involving her brothers. Along with "The Phoenix on the Sword," this was one of the first two Conan stories submitted by Howard, but it was the one that was rejected. Now it is a favorite Conan story with the virtue of being short and sweet.

"The Lair of the Ice Worm" by de Camp and Carter has Conan returning to the civilized lands of the south trying to find someone who wants to hire his sword. This is probably my favorite of the pastiches in this collection mainly because I like the idea of ice worms.

"Queen of the Black Coast" by Howard is the biggie in this one as Conan becomes the partner of Bêlit the she-pirate and gets the name Amra, the Lion. Conan is on a ship near the coast of Kush when Bêlit attacks and kills the rest of the crew. Of course, she falls for the Cimmerian. Howard is trying for something big here, but since he ends with a short story instead of a novella or another novel like "The Hour of the Dragon," it is over much to quickly. No wonder Roy Thomas and John Buscema took several years in their "Conan the Barbarian" comic book to flesh out this one, because this one is not as good as it should be.

"The Vale of Lost Women" by Howard, like "The Frost Giant's Daughter," is a Conan story that was not published during the author's lifetime. Conan saves Livia, a civilized white woman, who has been taken prisoner by the Bamulas, a black tribe. This story represents one of the most overt examples of Howard's racism, which detracts from the tale, even when you make allowances for the times.

"The Castle of Terror" by de Camp and Carter takes place in the kingdom of Kush and gets us back to the okay category.

"The Snout in the Dark" was rewritten by de Camp and Carter from an outline and the first half of a rough draft by Howard, ends the collection on a minor note.

The biographical paragraphs provided between the stories are based upon "A Probable Outline of Conan's Career" worked out by P. Schuyler Miller and Dr. John D. Clark and originally published in "The Hyborian Age" in 1938 and then expanded by L. Sprague de Camp in 1959 and published in the "Amra" fanzine devoted to Howard's pulp fiction heroes. This is important because one of the things that this paperback series was trying to do was to flesh out the rest of the Conan chronology. Of course, this is only talking in terms of the original Howard canon, because there have been numerous Conan novels written since these books were originally published. "Conan of Cimmeria" is where de Camp and Carter work out the second level of Conan stories. There are enough good ones here to make it worth reading.

What a way to end a book!!
By Captain Stern
This book has a supercharged, thrill ride ending. I mean wow, I can't believe they got that much story into so few pages, but that's what I love about the Conan short stories, they kick right off in the middle of the action, they catch you up quick, they glaze over a few details giving you just enough to let your imagination run wild, and then they came crashing to a dramatic end. These stories never limp to a conclusion, fast and furious all the way.
"The Snout In The Dark" is best De Camp and Lin Carter completed Robert E. Howard Conan tale I have read to date. They took a nice intro written by Howard and fleshed it out into being the most dramatically ending Conan story ever, what a way to end a book. Not all of the De Camp and Carter stuff is worth reading, in fact sometimes it follows to closely to something Howard already did, but this one is a thrill ride all its own.
"The Queen of The Black Coast" is a Howard classic and worth reading again and again. This story moves through so many emotions and themes, there's never a chance to get bored. The middle of the story could have easily been worked into a full length novel to cover the exploits of Conan and Belit, but this is one of the places you have to imagine it for yourself and just enjoy the dramatic, action filled final scenes. This one has an amazing photo finish, you can literally see the doom and gloom atmosphere of Conan's world.
"The Vale of Lost Women" is a real nice example of the Lovecraft influence in Howard's work. This book has tons of supernatural forces from beyond the stars that man was not meant to encounter in it. Another nice thing about this story is that while Conan is there to get the ball rolling and to stop the ball from rolling, he disappears during the mainstay of the story and instead Howard concentrates upon the mysticism of the tale.
"The Castle of Terror" is supernatural filler by De Camp and Carter that follows less dramatically along the lines of "The Vale of Lost Women" but it's still a fun read.
"The Frost Giant's Daughter" gives you a picture of some of the gods of Conan's world and a picture of his intense emotions.
The other three tales felt like filler to me, "The Curse of the Monolith," "The Blood-Stained God," and "The Lair of the Ice Worm," but they aren't bad reads when you aren't looking for much.
In closing I love Howard Conan tales and this is a fun book and if you get it and you aren't enjoying it, just skip to the last story it just kills at the end, literally.

The brilliant sequel to The Forever War, winner of the Hugo and Nebula Awards.

From Joe Haldeman, the all-time master of military science fiction, comes the new novel set in the universe of his Hugo and Nebula Award-winning classic The Forever War. An epic story about war, peace, and the price of freedom, Forever Free reintroduces readers to William Mandella--who has been living peacefully on the planet called Middle Finger, a refuge for humans who refuse to become part of the group mind known as Man. But after decades of this peace, Mandella and others are tired of living like zoo animals. So they steal a starship--and embark upon a voyage that will forever change their understanding of the universe...and themselves.

Amazon.com Review
You can't lose for winning--especially, it would seem, if you're Joe Haldeman. Suffering the same fate as many an author who's dared to pen unconventional sequels to a ferociously loved book (in this case, The Forever War), Haldeman has risked the ire of his many devoted admirers a second time (the first sequel was the award-spangled Forever Peace). But Haldeman's call--not too surprisingly--proves to be a deft one, giving us a book that, while significantly different from its predecessor, turns out to be equally captivating and sensitive, in many ways even more thought-provoking. (Sure, it doesn't match The Forever War for sheer impact, but then again, what does?)

As in The Forever War, the heart of this story is the dry, ironic bite of fighting-suit vet William Mandella, now middle-aged and a parent (along with his love and comrade-in-arms Marygay) to two teen-aged kids. The family leads a spartan life on the cold and desolate planet Middle Finger, which serves as a sort of genetic safe-deposit box for the current incarnation of humanity, an inhuman race of group-mind clones known as Man. But the animals in the zoo are getting restless, and a core group of vets led by William and Marygay plot an unusual escape: hijacking a reconditioned time ship and using it to take a 40,000 light-year tour (over 10 years of their own time) to rejoin the world they know only after 2,000 generations have passed. Much of the action involves the hatching and fruition of this plot, but Haldeman doesn't really mix things up until nearing the end, when he dissolves physics as we know it and calls down the wrath of God itself. --Paul Hughes

From Publishers Weekly
In this long-awaited sequel to The Forever War, Haldeman describes the postwar life of retired soldiers William and Marygay Mandella on the half-frozen planet Middle Finger, where they and other humans have been secluded by the newly evolved, superhuman race of Man. The long war with the Taurans is over and William and company are little more than relics, kept around to provide archaic genes should the Man ever wish to alter their own, cloned near-perfection. Dissatisfied with their stagnant lives, William and his fellow vets steal a starship. They plan to travel so far and fast that time dilation will allow them to return only a decade older but millennia in their world's future. Disaster strikes just days into their voyage, however, when their antimatter engines mysteriously malfunction in direct violation of the laws of physics. Returning home in escape craft, Mandella and his mates discover that everyone on the planet has disappeared, leaving only their clothes behind. Further, all communication with the outside universe has been cut off. Despite a slow start, Haldeman builds considerable tension with the mystery that confronts his human survivors of what appears to be the complete disappearance of not only humanity, but also of Man and the Taurans. Some truly weird events have occurred and Haldeman gives them a genuinely spooky feel. Mandella's laconic narrative, so effective in getting across The Forever War's antiwar message, proves just as effective in this sequel. The novel is weakened, however, by what feels like an overly hasty conclusion, burdened by Haldeman's decision to invoke not one but two deus ex machinae in the book's final chapters. Still, this is a well-written and worthy sequel to one of SF's enduring classics. (Dec.) FYI: Haldeman's The Forever War (1974) and Forever Peace (1997) each won both the Hugo and Nebula awards for best SF novel.

From Library Journal
In the aftermath of the Forever War, a group of combat veterans living on the distant planet of Middle Finger decide to sever their ties with the group-minded genetically identical society of "Man." Commandeering an anti-matter driven spaceship, they begin a journey beyond the Galaxy, where they confront a mystery that eventually brings them into confrontation with the greatest mystery of their existence. The author of The Forever War and Forever Peace continues his exploration of the essential nature of humanity in a deceptively simple story that questions the foundations of human belief. Haldeman's clear, concise storytelling and his understanding of human behavior make his latest effort a strong addition to most sf collections.

Terribly disappointing
By A Customer
Up until this point, I've liked every Haldeman story I've ever read. I don't like to give negative reviews as a rule, but this one is such a disappointment I think it would be a service to warn anyone else who likes Haldeman's normally first-rate writing. The first half of this book is an involving and well-told story, but then ideas just sort of come at you from out of left field, and the book takes off in weird and unsatisfying directions. It's as if there are pieces of three unrelated stories squeezed awkwardly into one book, and none of them are developed completely. This is not a sequel to the classic Forever War, except in so far as it (quite unnecessarily) includes some of the same characters. But even worse, Forever Free's reinterpretation of reality undermines the meaning of Forever War's powerful statements on humanity and war. Not only is this book bad in itself, it will taint your affection for its splendid predecessor. If you like Haldeman and love the classic Forever War, do yourself a favor and skip this one.

If you liked The Forever War, DO NOT read this sequel...
By skydiver30960
... just keep on liking the first book in blissful ignorance. It's as if he started out with an idea, wrote himself into a corner, pulled a Deus ex Machina that William Shakespeare would complain about, drops the mic, and struts out of the room. I'll keep reading and loving the Forever War, but this one... ugh.

Forever Failed
By Kevin Wohler
I loved reading Joe Haldeman's seminal science fiction novel Forever War, and I enjoyed his award-winning Forever Peace. I picked up Forever Free with the expectation that this sequel to Forever War would relive the issues of the original novel. I had hoped it would follow up on Haldeman's observations about science, war, sociology, and psychology. Unfortunately, unlike FW and FP, this novel ignored those issues and presented a spiritual side (or at least as close as Haldeman is willing to offer) that the others didn't touch on.
Forever Free picks up several years after William and Marygay settle down on the ice planet Middle Finger. Their self-imposed ghetto separates them from the group minds of Man and Tauran, but their lives are constantly influenced by them as well. They don't like seeing their children grow up in this environment, and it has become clear that they are at a critical moment in history. The veterans old enough to remember the Forever War are getting too old to fight. If they are going to stand up to Man, it has to be soon.
The first half of the book is interesting, even if it seems padded at times. I had enjoyed the descriptions of life on Middle Finger with Man. I liked the conflict between Mandella and his son. I even liked the Man sheriff and the Tauran ambassador, but Haldeman appears to use them as stock figures - when he remembered to mention them at all.
There comes a moment when the book ceases to be about revolution and evolution and becomes something of a whodunit. I disliked this part of the book. Haldeman may not be the best SF writer out there, but FW and FP were based on science. Some of it was hand-waved, but there were always scientific principles behind everything. In Forever Free, Haldeman gives us a mystery in which there should have been a good, scientific answer. Instead, he gives us an answer that is more fantasy than science fiction.
I think Forever Free could have worked better as a shorter piece. If the publisher had removed the blank pages between chapters, I think they would have been hard-pressed to make it a 200-page novel. With some editing (and a better ending), it would have made a nice 100-150 page novella. This was a big disappointment for me.

Book 3 and 4 should've been book 3
By Amazon Customer
The first and second installments of this plot line were incredible, but the latest chapter in the Lost Fleet series seemed to drag along like a dying bovine. Captain Geary is still submerged in the political warfare and logistical nightmare of being stranded behind enemy lines. And to make matters worse, the Syndicate, enemies of Black Jack Geary's Alliance, has wizened from the rag-tag group he initially encountered, and are quickly relearning the lessons of wars past.

The possibility of a third party operating behind the scenes was what had me eager for this volume, but that is addressed in only the most passing sense. The plot is essentially a rehash of the first volume, and has many if not nearly all the elements from both volume 1 and 2. While certain new threads are introduced, this entry did little more than move pieces around a board, rather than have any actual play.

Couldn't put it down!
By Cinnawinsticks
This book defied the doomed "Third Tragedy" fate that a lot of series suffer. I was eager to read more and more, happily making time in my schedule to read the next page. A lot of tense situations, exciting combat sequences, and a curiosity of intricate space naval combat prevented me from losing interest or taking time with this read. Well worth reading to continue on the series.

Good stuff
By COL Ron
Good military sci fi series so far. Probably the best I have read in a long time. I especially like the portrayal of the military concepts of honor, tradition and selflessness that make our military so strong.

I am not as concerned with the on and off again moodiness of Co-President Rione as some of the other reviewers have commented , However, the main character CAPT Geary needs to quit having so much self doubt. No effective commander can function properly and responsibly with as much self doubt as is constantly attributed to our hero. He needs to get a grip on his life and move forward. Sure anyone in battle has doubts but you need to have confidence in your abilities, in your subordinates - officers and NCOs to give you the information that allows you to make informed decisions. If you have that much doubt in your own abilities and your decision making then you should relinquish your command. He needs to pick a good Executive Officer (not just his flag ship commander) and a battle staff to assist in decision making rather than simply relying on a "virtual conference debate" among ship commanders.

The books otherwise are good reading and have really keep up my interest. I await the next books in the series and look forward to finding out more about the constant reference to the "Aliens" that keeps popping up.

Sookie Stackhouse is having man trouble. Her vampire boyfriend, Bill, has been distant and inattentive lately. Then he announces that he is going on a business trip, which clearly is more than it seems. After a werewolf tries to abduct Sookie at work, Bill's boss, Eric, tells her that Bill fell under the sway of his--Bill's, that is--ex, a sexy vamp named Lorena, and has been kidnapped. Eric wants Sookie's help in getting Bill back, and despite her hurt over Bill's betrayal, Sookie agrees to go to Jackson, Mississippi, to find her wayward lover. Eric has persuaded Alcide, a dashing werewolf, to get Sookie access to Josephine's, aka Club Dead, the local hangout of Jackson's supernatural element. In between dodging kidnappers, the advances of amorous Eric, and her growing feelings for Alcide, Sookie has to find out who kidnapped Bill and figure out a way to rescue him. With some droll touches--Elvis, now a vampire, is Sookie's faithful guard --Club Dead is ideal for readers who like their vampire fiction light, humorous, and fast-paced. Kristine Huntley

Another fine Sookie Stackhouse adventure
By Robert Moore
I just finished the fifth novel in the Southern Vampire Mysteries aka the Sookie Stackhouse novels so I'm a little behind in my reviewing. In one of the great happy circumstances of my life I had independently decided to read this series of novels AND to watch the new Alan Ball TV series, not knowing that the latter was based on the former. I had already ordered the first four novels in the series (but had not yet received them) when I read that TRUE BLOOD was based on Charlaine Harris's books. Since then I've become a big fan of both. I'll start on the sixth Sookie Stackhouse book sometime this next week just as I eagerly await the third episode of TRUE BLOOD tomorrow night. And with the announcement that the show has already been renewed for a second season (it will come out this summer) and with Harris certain to write new novels (I won't read the eighth until it appears in paperback -- I like my books to match when possible -- this winter), Sookie Stackhouse seems destined to be around for quite some time to come.

The challenge in any series is how to keep expanding the world it describes without becoming too diffuse. CLUB DEAD follows LIVING DEAD IN DALLAS by moving much of the novel's action to another southern city, this time the much smaller metropolis of Jackson, Mississippi. Sookie has to go there in an attempt to find and rescue her vampire boyfriend Bill, who has been captured by parties unknown (though, of course, not by the end of the book). She is aided by a new character in the series, a were named Alcide Herveaux. I won't go into plot details, but the novel has a lot of fun and memorable scenes.

Bubba is back! The idea is that when Elvis died and was taken to the morgue, he wasn't quite dead. The coroner was actually a vampire and he attempted to revive the King as a vampire, but something went wrong in the attempt and he was left a tad feeble-minded. The vampires keep him under wraps, but occasionally he gets out into the public and people see him, accounting for the sightings. Bubba (he doesn't react well to being called Elvis) could have been a terrible character, but he is handled with just the right touch to be a lot of fun.

The main reason I continue to enjoy these books is the wonderful narrative voice that Harris given Sookie. As a reader you come to like and love Sookie, even if her life isn't going as smoothly and as wisely as she would like.

Because a lot of people are becoming aware of these books as a result of TRUE BLOOD, let me add that if you like the show, you will love the books. I think both are great in their own ways. I highly recommend both.

Candyland
By Jay Dickson
Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse Mysteries are pure candy: with their mix of closely observed Southern humor, consistently drawn colorful characters and genuine suspense, they ensure you're always assured with them that you're going to have fun at the very least when you read them. And Harris's ingenuity is sketching out the anthropological details of her little universe (where vampires have "come out of the coffin" to humans after the development of a synthetic blood that means vampires don't have to feast on mankind) has been a dream for the writers of TRUE BLOOD, the HBO series based on the tales.

CLUB DEAD, the third book in the series, is enjoyable (as always), but unfortunately it is also not one of Harris's strongest. The telepathic bar waitress Sookie Stackhouse has been asked by the vampire authorities to discover what has happened to her undead boyfriend Bill Compton, and as usual everything bad seems to go down in her process of finding an answer. The setting of Sookie's quest (Jackson, MS during the Christmas season) is sufficiently unusual to warrant interest, but Harris seems uninterested in providing much local color for Jackson and yet, as always, extremely involved in telling us what exactly Sookie wore to which event on her journeys (and this time we also get two elaborate manicures thrown in as well). The other problem with this entrant in the series is that Harris doesn't tell you much in the end about why Bill was missing or what he was doing leaving Sookie for another vampire, Lorena; you have to wait until later books to find explanations for what happened in these regards.

Darker, more violent but still FINE
By bookstealth
I'd give CLUB DEAD a 4.5 if that were possible. First off, I really love this series. It's unique in its supernatural chills mixed with insightful social speculation, lusty romance and hoot-out-loud hilarity. (Hamilton's Anita Blake series, you say? Puh-leeze.) So I approach it as a solid 5 just for great world building and characterization, then work down from there.
I won't bother with a plot summary since it's already been done but this book is less balanced than the first two in the series. The characters are still vivid and grow in suprising but logical ways. Sookie is just as tough, wry and clear-sighted about her own situation and vulnerabilities. Her lover Bill The Vampire's unexpected treachery suprised me but Harris is nothing if not tough minded. She's consistently sprinkled reminders throughout all the diverting humor and action that vampires are fundamentally different; they do not share conventional human morality or emotions. Vampire area boss Eric is still a gorgeous hunk who cheerfully lusts for Sookie but shows signs of being a more simpatico, genuine friend, albeit somewhat reluctantly. (He's still a vampire and "doesn't *like* having feelings, remember.) The introduction of hunky (and breathing) Alcide the Werewolf, hung up on the Ex-Girl Friend From Hell, makes a poignant counterpoint to Sookie's situation. And Bubba, oh my GOD, the ineffable Bubba...(This raving won't make a lick of sense to anyone who hasn't read the series but betcha anyone who HAS can't keep from chortling.)
As always w/ this this series, there are some purely wonderful scenes. Sookie and Alcide nervously trying to dispose of a corpse wrapped in a shower curtain, "like a big green burrito." And as usual Harris seamlessly, suavely injects unexpected humor into horror and vice versa. An appalling bloodbath at Club Dead jolts weres and shapeshifters, already jittery from the full moon, into drifting through the carnage as falcons, German Sheperds and a stray bison. It's pretty danged disconcerting to snicker during a scene where the thoroughly likeable main character gets a stake driven into her side.
But that leads to my one caveat about this book. It's exhausting in its relentless violence against Sookie. Over the span of a few days she's subjected to one horrific assault after another, bam, bam, bam. She isn't granted any respite or downtime and neither is the reader. Even after her harrowing rescue of Bill from the torture chamber--a logical watershed moment--she's ambushed and/or brutally assaulted two more times (once by Bill) and then once again when she finally, grimly flees home. Maybe the constant violence and terror (no matter how deftly leavened with wry humor) set up Sookie's decision to slam the door against her dear undead but the book still ends with a thump. The relentless tension never really gets released; it just...ends.
I'm sure (uh, I *hope*) Charlaine Harris will back-fill the aftermath in the next book. (Soon, please!) It just would have been satisfying to have that coasting-down and wrapping-up at the end of this book for balance. I feel a little thwarted of conversations and resolutions that could have served as coda to this installment. Bill helplessly marching backward, her brush still in hand, doesn't quite cut it. It's not like Harris hasn't built huge suspense already...how will Sookie cope now, with her increasing familiarity and fame with the undead and supernatural ? If she can't "go back", where can she go...and where and how far does she *want* to go? Great stuff.
Please place these few, very minor quibbles in perspective. This series is a genuine, rare *find* for readers jaded with the same old same old. Charlaine Harris is a writer, not a by-the-numbers word factory, who won't insult your intelligence, waste your time or money. If you haven't read the series, you're in for a treat.

Amazon.com Review
Here is the novel that started it all, launching the cyberpunk generation, and the first novel to win the holy trinity of science fiction: the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award and the Philip K. Dick Award. With Neuromancer, William Gibson introduced the world to cyberspace--and science fiction has never been the same.

Case was the hottest computer cowboy cruising the information superhighway--jacking his consciousness into cyberspace, soaring through tactile lattices of data and logic, rustling encoded secrets for anyone with the money to buy his skills. Then he double-crossed the wrong people, who caught up with him in a big way--and burned the talent out of his brain, micron by micron. Banished from cyberspace, trapped in the meat of his physical body, Case courted death in the high-tech underworld. Until a shadowy conspiracy offered him a second chance--and a cure--for a price....

It's colorful inside a computer.
By Melanie D. Typaldos
I am reading the Nebula Award winning novels in chronological order. This is the winner for 1985.

I didn't like it but I didn't hate it.

It's full of detailed, but repetitive, scenes of life when you mentally get inside computer systems. These images, while fanciful, are completely off the wall. Maybe it's that the book is showing its age. The world is extremely violent to the point where they could be no structured society. Nobody thinks, you know, maybe I shouldn't kill that person.

There were several times when I thought, okay, it's over. But it wasn't. It kept going on with more of the same.

I was not able to identify with any of the characters, nor did I see their personalities develop.

These Nebula Award winners are a mixed bag. Some are great. Some are awful. This was slightly to the awful side.

Incredible imagination, incredible writing.
By Smiling Hotei
This book popularized a new genre - cyberpunk. Although Gibson may not have been the first to explore the cyberspace world (e.g., Brunner, Vinge, and others) he entered with a splash, or perhaps a tsunami. What is most ironic is that Gibson wrote Neuromancer on a typewriter, not being a computer user.

The opening line of Necromancer is often cited as an example of creative writing. Rather than opening with "It was a dark and stormy night" Gibson introduces us to his world with, "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel."

""It's not like I'm using," Case heard someone say, as he shouldered his way through the crowd around the door of the Chat. "It's like my body's developed this massive drug deficiency." It was a Sprawl voice and a Sprawl joke. The Chatsubo was a bar for professional expatriates; you could drink there for a week and never hear two words in Japanese...."

Welcome to the Sprawl...

The book that started it all.
By kittybot
What can one say about the book that started cyberpunk? Well, probably not much about it starting cyberpunk, as Gibson notoriously hates the term. But this is a complete masterpiece. Thrilling, inventive, emotionally gripping, thought-provoking, grittier than reality ever was, and just plain cool to boot. I read Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash as my first foray into the genre termed 'cyberpunk' (and have since re-read it many times, as I'm sure I'll do with Neuromancer) and decided I had to see the start of it all. I wasn't disappointed and I would highly recommend this for any fan of technology, hacking, body modification, virtual reality, politics, science fiction, futurism, any sort of punk, mind-bending, or exciting stories of any kind. Do yourself a favor and read this if you haven't already; do yourself a favor and reread it if you have.

John Taylor has just solved the mystery of two friends' deaths when he is called to another case. Charles Chabron wants Taylor to contact his daughter, Rossignol (French for nightingale), a young singer who has fallen under the sway of the ruthless Cavendishes, a husband-and-wife management team. Rossignol used to sing upbeat, happy songs, but now her set is so melancholy that people leave her show and commit suicide. After visiting Rossignol at the Goth club Caliban's Cavern, where she performs nightly, Taylor knows something is wrong. When he goes to the Cavendishes' management company, a pair of somnambulists beat him mercilessly, leaving him near death and with no one to turn to but Pew, an old enemy. With the help of Dead Boy, a deceased mugging victim who now fights criminals, Taylor tries to locate the Cavendishes' former protege, Sylvia Sin, and find a way to rescue Rossignol from the couple's clutches. The latest installment in Green's Nightshade series is a delight--exciting, action packed, truly suspenseful. Kristine Huntley

If I could give 3.5 I would.
By General Pete
I have to say that this the only installment of the Nightside series that I truly dislike not so much because of the setting which is always fun and interesting but because of the plot line. The old plotline the starlet held against her will by morally corrupt music managers has been used in every series of mystery books that I have ever read. I have always found this plot point to be idiotic but at least it proves that Green is not perfect and is as susceptible to cliques as the rest of us.

Sing a song to die for
By Marty Snodgrass
The world created by Simon Green is unique and intriguing. The Nightengale is a great story about a "lost" singer. With demented owners and death all over the place it is up to one man to figure out and stop what is happening.

John Taylor is a private detective with a gift at finding things. Including trouble. He has a "reputation" in the Nightside, good or bad is another story in itself.

I highly recommend this series of books to anyone with an open mind.
