From Publishers Weekly
Veteran SF author Anthony's second entry in his Mode Series finds four travelers between parallel universes rescued by a woman who needs their help in overthrowing her world's despotic rulers.
Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
As Colene, the teenage heroine of Virtual Mode ( LJ 2/15/91), and her traveling companions continue their trek across the dimensions of reality, they encounter a fractal world where a young woman struggles to change her oppressive society. This second in Anthony's "Mode" books serves as a painless introduction to one of science's most intriguing concepts as well as a story of adventure and romance. The author's protagonists are as ingenuous as ever, infusing his story with an innocence that wavers between charming and cloying. His enthusiasm for new ideas, however, is infectious, and his imagination shows no signs of wear. Expected patron demand warrants purchase by most libraries.

From Kirkus Reviews
Anthony's latest series (beginning with Virtual Mode, 1990) started life as a fantasy involving parental neglect and child abuse, but here it meanders off into standard reality-hopping adventure. Our heroes--abused 14-year-old Colene from Earth; Darius of the sympathetic magic; Seqiro the telepathic horse; and Provos, who remembers only the future--fall across the ``modes'' (realities) to magic-world Oria, where the highly magical Nona, the ninth child of a ninth child, hopes to overthrow the ``despots'' by transforming their male ``animus'' magic into female ``anima'' magic. To achieve this, Nona must journey to Earth (where Colene will save a friend from special abuse and torture) to learn about fractals--Oria, you see, is part of a fractal universe, and Nona must be able to orient herself in order to effectively wield her magic. Not too much more than a fantasy Time Tunnel--our heroes fall away into a new adventure at the end of each episode--displaying the usual Anthony rewards and drawbacks. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. Wonderful sequel!!
By A Customer
Fractal Mode is a really great sequel to Virtual Mode. A new anchor in a new reality that is amazing. A fractal reality, where a mathematical equation become every single part of the earth, with rad and filaments, wondrous shapes of ferns, sea horses, bugs, etc... comprise this new reality.
This is Piers's imagination at its best! Colene and Darius continue their adventure with Sequiro, Provos and new anchor Nona.
If you like Virtual Mode, you will love Fractal Mode. And don't forget to read Chaos and DoOon ;-)

Overall this is a wonderful book!
By A Customer
I was quite impressed with the book Fractal Mode. I found this book to leave me a with little something to desire about the first book's main characters. But, it made me want to know more about Nona.(The main Character of this novel.) It had concepts that can be some what hard to fathom if you are not paying close attention to detail. (As in many Anthony novels.) An example of these concepts would be Mandelbrot Set and Julia Sets. It also made me want to rush right on into the third book and see what happens to everyone. (Which was better than the second but, not as good as the first. As I see it that is the case quite often.) But, it held my interest and intellect all the way through to the end. ( Also as in many Anthony novels .) Mostly though, it truly breaks my heart that I have not seen anymore books to this "Mode Series," even though they were promised. But, I keep my eyes peeled all the time. Hopefully soon I will be ecstatic and find one. So if you can I would recommend reading the "Mode Series" in its entirety.
Bravo Anthony!
P.S. Anthony, please send more sequel novels to the "Mode Series!!!!!!!!!" Thank You. I LOVE ALL Your Works!

Fractal Mode
By Joel Dalton
This is a very good book as all the books in this series are. However, if the only thing you've seen of Piers Anthony is his Xanth series that is so popular, then you may want to screen this for the kids. All of these books deal with adult issues. You can judge whether someone is mature enough to read it, but all the books in this series follow a girl who is suicidal, the older man she loves and who loves her and their various companions. They deal with issues like suicide, rape, sex, etc... They do it in good way that is relevant and fits into the story. The story is about a girl Coleen, who was raped at a party once. Her father is an adulterer and her mother is a drunk. She puts on a good act and is a very popular girl on the outside, but cuts her self and frequently contemplates suicide, though she's very smart. One day on the way home from school, she comes across a man passed out in a ditch. Her suicidal nature leads her to take him home. After learning a little of each others language, he says that he's from another world/mode and that he wants to take her to be his wife there. She doesn't believe him and he disappears. She believes him and realizes she's made a mistake and he realizes he shouldn't have left. The method he takes is random though and the only way to reliably get back to Coleen is by invoking a virtual mode. The rest of the story is about how Coleen and Darren are trying to find each other and get back to his mode. They continuously encounter problems and solve them with the help of their friends from the other anchor modes. The whole time Coleen is trying to deal with her issues so that she can be with Darren in a health relationship. So there are many different things going on in this series and I have just gone over the general gist so that I don't give anything away. Everything is done in a tasteful manner, but as I said it contains very adult subject matter. Enjoy.

Chapter One

It's sweat.

I wasn't sure at first. I haven't been vampire that long, but I sure as hell don't remember sweating since becoming one.

Drops of moisture pool between my shoulder blades, soak my underarms, collect between my breasts, making a soggy mess of the blouse underneath my jacket.

A new blouse.

It's sweat, no doubt about it.

I can't take my jacket off. I've got a .38 clipped to my belt.

Might make the natives restless. Or excited.

Shit.

I glance over at my partner. He hasn't broken a sweat so it's not the room. Even if I didn't have a constitution that is impervious to ambient temperature, the air conditioner in this dump is cranked up to ice age.

I start to squirm on the barstool, impatient to get out into the air. Impatient to escape.

Escape?

What?

What the hell is happening?

My temple throbs, like my head is in a vise. A vise that's being slowly tightened.

Great.

I swipe a hand across my forehead. It comes away wet. I sneak a look across at David to see if he's noticed.

He hasn't.

He's busy watching for the skip, Curly Tom, the reason we're stuck in this dive.

I look around, too.

But not for the skip. Something is wrong. I don't know what.

David takes a break from skip alert and peers at me over the rim of his beer bottle. I feel his eyes on me like an irritating swarm of gnats buzzing around my head.

I look up at him and bark, "What?"

"You're squirming like a worm in shit. You not happy to be here?"

Like I should be? I'm burning up and my insides are quivering like a Jell-O shooter. Then there's Lance, tall, blond and sexy, waiting for me at home. No, I don't want to be here. I frown at David. "You said we'd be done by ten. And yet, here we are"—I glance at my watch—"at eleven, in a place reeking of stale beer and ripe biker. Bumfuckville, David."

He drains the bottle and motions to the barkeep for another. "Eyes on the prize, Anna. Twenty thou."

"So where is he?"

David swivels on the barstool, takes a slow, lazy look around. "Don't worry. He's coming."

"So's Christmas. I want to go home."

It's my turn to read David's expression. Aggravation mingled with frustration.

"We've only been here an hour. What's your goddamned rush?" He leans back, his elbows on the bar, facing the door. "Let me guess. That scrawny model boyfriend of yours is waiting for you at the cottage. Am I right?"

"Lance is not scrawny."

"What's he weigh? One-seventy soaking wet? I don't know what you see in him. In a fight, he'd snap like a matchstick."

Oh, David. Would you be surprised. Lance is a vampire, like me, and if it came to a fight, he'd be the one doing the snapping. I force a smile. "He's lean, David, not scrawny." Comes from not consuming a carb in the last fifty years. "Not every man is a pituitary case like you."

A flash of irritation tightens the corners of his mouth. I immediately regret my snarky remark. David is big, true, but a former football player who's kept in shape. He's my partner and friend, and he didn't deserve the crack.

I rub at my eyes with the palms of my hands. It's this damned headache.

I have a headache now?

How can a vampire get a headache?

David swivels his stool away from me and focuses his attention back to the door—a deliberate cold shoulder. Not that I blame him. I don't try to mitigate his snit. Instead I focus on whatever the hell is going on in my body. The head ache has turned into an annoying hum and the stomach quiver into a clenched fist. Granted, I've been a vampire for less than a year, but I'm pretty sure we don't get the flu.

Which is what this feels like.

I rub at my eyes again and look around, trying to focus. This is a biker bar—a real biker bar—on the outskirts of Lakeside in east San Diego County. Run-down, no flashing neon beer signs in the windows to attract customers. No windows at all. No back door. Probably be in violation of a hundred fire codes if it wasn't classified as a "private club." Sawdust crunches underfoot, absorbing spilled beer and the occasional body fluid. Some wise guy has tacked a Health Department rating code of "F" above the bar.

Members wearing the colors of the local Angels' chapter slouch at the bar or shoot pool under the glare of a green-shaded light. The only reason David and I have been left unmolested and unchallenged is because we know the president of the club. We did him a favor a few years back and he's repaying the debt.

He was only too happy to oblige. The guy we're after isn't a biker. He's a pain-in-the-ass wannabe who robbed and shot a dealer in L.A. and skipped bail. He's been hanging around the bar, bragging about his score, thinking it might gain him access to the club. Trouble is, the prez knows it's only a matter of time before the cops trace him here. He'd rather we get him first. Saves the club the trouble of dealing with Curly Tom himself.

Good for us. Better for Curly Tom.

With us, it's a payday and he'll end up in jail. With the club, it's self-preservation and he'll most likely end up in a shallow grave in the Anza-Borrego desert.

I let my gaze sweep the room. No one seems to be paying us the slightest bit of attention. Most know why we're here. But I feel—something. Anxiety. Apprehension. Dread.

Why? Over this jerk, Curly Tom?

Makes no sense.

David and I are bounty hunters. We've done jobs like this a hundred times. We've faced tougher guys than this joker. And that was before I became vampire. Having superhuman strength and speed tends to boost one's confidence.

So if I'm not experiencing this foreboding over Curly Tom, what is it?

The humming in my head grows stronger.

That's when it hits me.

The last time I felt anything like this, a witch was behind it.

A witch.

The thought propels me off the barstool. The abrupt movement brings David to his feet, too. He looks around, right hand moving instinctively to touch the gun under his jacket.

"Is he here? Do you see him?"

I shake my head. "No. He's not here."

I look around.

But something is.

Chapter Two

David glances around to see how much attention we've attracted with my vault off the barstool. The noise level remains the same, and except for the biker next to David who got bumped when he leapt up, no one seems to have noticed.

That guy is not happy. Beer drips off the elbow of his leather jacket. "Hey, asshole."

David mumbles, "Sorry, man," and signals the barkeep for another round.

The guy shoots off his stool, but when he's standing next to David, who is six inches taller and built like a tank, he shrugs and accepts the beer with a grudging nod.

David waits for him to sit down, then turns his frown on me, "What's the matter with you?"

I settle my butt back on the stool. If I told him what was the matter—that I think a witch might be trying to put a spell on me—I imagine the reaction would be the same if I told him his partner was a vampire. And had been for almost a year.

Not an option.

What is an option is for me to get the hell out of here and find out who, or what, is after me.

Time to go on the offensive. "Ten minutes, David. I'll give it ten more minutes. Then I'm gone."

He opens his mouth to object but snaps it closed again, his eyes on the guy who just pushed his way through the door. "There he is."

Curly Tom isn't curly. He's bald and short and fat, about two hundred forty pounds on a five-ten frame. He's dressed in leathers that bear no markings. At least he's smart enough to know wearing Angels' colors uninitiated is a death sentence. He looks around the bar, a goofy smile on his face, as if waiting for an invitation to join one of the groups clustered at the bar or in the back by the pool table.

No invitation is forthcoming. The barkeep leans over to David and whispers, "Get him and get the fuck out of here."

With bikers, gratitude only gets you so far.

David slides off the stool and motions to the right. I go that way and he goes to the left. Before Curly Tom realizes what's happening, we've got him flanked.

David takes his arm in a steel grip that makes the biker flinch. "Let's take a walk," David says.

Curly Tom's eyes widen, the smile falls from his face. He struggles to break David's hold but in a flash, I've got his other arm. When my fingers close around his forearm in a grip even stronger than David's, he yelps.

"Who the fuck are you?"

That makes the bikers closest to us look around. But they know what's going on. They tighten ranks, their backs to Curly Tom, and in an instant, he sees he's on his own. He starts to dance around, trying to shake us loose. When that fails, he unleashes a shit storm of invective that's as creative as it is ineffective.

David and I hustle him outside.

While Curly Tom continues his diatribe, David and I have a conversation of our own.

"Told you he'd show up," David says.

"Yeah, yeah. Can you get him downtown on your own?"

"Why? You going back inside?"

When I don't answer, he says, "See if you get lucky?"

"Funny."

I push Curly Tom's head down and shove him into the backseat of the Ford Crown Vic we use for work. David snaps his cuffed wrist around a steel bar in the door and straightens to peer at me in the dim light of the parking lot.

"How will you get home?"

"I'll call Lance."

"You'll call Lance. And he'll have to drive all the way out here from Mission Beach to pick you up. Doesn't make sense, Anna, even for you."

His tone makes the thudding in my head worse and the knot in my stomach tighten. Whatever is wreaking havoc with my nervous system is here in this place, and I need to find out what it is. But David is not giving up without a fight.

I slam the car door so hard, Curly Tom bounces in the backseat. "I don't ask you to explain every thing you do. If I did, I might start with why you and that booking clerk from jail pick my side of the desk to fuck on when you sneak back to the office in the middle of the night."

He turns startled eyes toward me. "How—?"

"How do I know?" I smell it. Not the answer I can give. I shake a finger. "I just know, okay. And since she's on duty tonight, I imagine you'll be heading there after you drop this dirtbag off."

He puts a finger to his lips and jerks his head in Curly Tom's direction. "Are you crazy? What if he hears you?"

"Your problem. Now, are you finished grilling me?"

David snatches the car keys from my outstretched hand. It wasn't fair bringing up his affair—he has a steady girlfriend that I'm sure knows nothing about his on-again, off-again fling with the chick from jail—but lately, nothing much is. He stomps around to the driver's side of the car, drops into the seat and peels out of the parking lot.

I release a pent-up sigh.

Finally.

The night closes around me. Moonless. Dead quiet. Mid-July hot. Even so, I start to shiver. I turn my face toward the bar. Whoever—whatever—is affecting me is inside.

The realization makes the feeling grow stronger. Something is there—just out of sight. Something evil. It draws me back. If this is a spell, it's like nothing I've felt before. The witch Belinda Burke's black magic drained her victims of physical strength and left their bodies ill and dying. This is attacking my brain at a primeval level. A warning of danger that's repulsing and magnetic at the same time. I can no more leave it unexplained or unanswered than I could convince David to leave me here alone at a biker bar without resorting to blackmail.

I'll apologize for that later.

A car pulls into the parking lot.

A dark Ford sedan.

Followed by a second.

Nothing says "cop" like identical Ford sedans.

I step back into the shadows and watch.

When one of the drivers steps out, I recognize him.

Detective Harris, SDPD Homicide.

Three more cars, patrol cars this time, pull up around the perimeter of the lot, effectively sealing it off. Harris directs the cops with hand signals, stationing them by the door and around the row of Harleys parked in front. One he sends around back, but the cop returns almost immediately. As David and I discovered earlier, there's no exit in the back, just one small window near the ceiling of the women's bathroom.

When Harris is ready, he unclips his gun, holds it out of sight at his side and disappears through the door.

Hell breaks loose.

Shouting. Swearing. Scuffling and running feet. Bikers pour out the door and straight into a line of cops, all waiting with guns drawn.

At the same time, I hear a sound from behind the building. A small sound, a window sliding open. Too soft for the cops out front to hear but not for a vampire.

Besides, the cops are occupied with corralling stampeding bikers. I make my way unnoticed to the back.

There's a man trying to wriggle through that one tiny bathroom window. His head is down, his hands flailing for purchase against the wood siding. He's stuck.

He raises his head, spies me. "Hey, bitch." He's whispering, but his voice is hard, commanding. "Help me out of here."

The sick feeling in my gut grows stronger.

I stare at the face. Dark skin, eyes filled with hate, mouth twisted in a sneer.

I step back.

"Didn't you hear me, bitch?" He's trying to prop himself up.

This time when he raises his head, I'm ready. I steel myself for the wave of nausea his gaze unleashes.

The headache, the sense of evil, the foreboding twisting my gut. It's all emanating from an asshole stuck like a fat toad in a bathroom window.

I swallow down disgust. "What are you?"

He pauses in his struggles to shoot me a look that's part astonishment, part rage. "What do you mean, what am I? Are you nuts?"

All my vamp senses have sprung to alert. I try to get inside his head. Are you a vamp? A shape-shifter? A witch?

Nothing.

All I get is a black void, a deep well of malevolence.

And the certain knowledge that he's human.

Human?

How could that be? How can he be affecting my senses like this if he's human?

We stare at each other. He's got my mind locked in a steel vise. Every instinct screams I should rip out his throat, now, before he frees himself, before he gets loose and—

And what?

He's human.

He rouses himself first, face reddening. "You stupid cunt. When I get out of here, I'll kill you." He resumes his wild thrashing, pushing against the wall with the palms of his hands, trying to get his lard ass through an opening barely bigger than his head.

I'm stupid?

I have two choices. Yell for Harris or let the guy do it himself when he realizes he's wedged so tight in the window, he'll likely starve to death if no one finds him.

No. There's another choice.

A voice inside my head.

Kill him.

Still Not a Favorite
By Kelly (Fantasy Literature)
I read the first ANNA STRONG novel, The Becoming, some time ago and didn't like it. Because of this, I haven't kept up with the series. When I received a review copy of Chosen, however, I was curious. Now that I've read it, I will say that Chosen is superior to The Becoming, but that this series will probably never be one of my favorites.

Anna Strong is approaching the first anniversary of her transformation into a vampire. Rumor says she's the Chosen One, and according to legend, the Chosen One's powers will fully manifest on that anniversary. Needless to say, Anna is a little freaked out when she does start developing new traits, such as an ability to sniff out "evil" followed by the overwhelming urge to kill the person she has identified as evil. Then an attempt is made on her life, which doesn't do much to assuage her worries.

She dispatches the assassin, though, and then has sex with her boyfriend Lance at the scene of the fight. Lance is a fellow vampire who is also a male model and the scion of an old, wealthy family. Anna is smitten with him, and in the early chapters of Chosen, they have sex... a lot. The sex may pose a problem to some readers, not because it's there but because of the way it's handled. The *frequency* of the sex scenes is consistent with an erotic novel, but the *style* of these scenes is not. There's very little description of the buildup of tension, of foreplay, or even of the act itself; the scenes are brief and sort of come out of nowhere. So, readers who aren't looking for an erotic novel may get sick of the sex interrupting the plot, while readers who are looking for an erotic novel will probably find these scenes lacking in sensuality. Indeed, there's much more sexual *tension* between Anna and an ex-boyfriend who is only a platonic pal in this installment.

Things pick up when Lance is compelled to introduce Anna to his sinister sire, Julian Underwood. Underwood has teamed up with an old enemy of Anna's, Warren Williams, to try and force her into accepting her role as the Chosen One. This leads into a suspenseful plot filled with action and backstabbing. There are a few glitches here, particularly one scene in which Anna really should have caught on to someone acting suspiciously and didn't, but for the most part the plot works. I enjoyed the poignant scene where Anna has to kill someone she once cared about, and her flash of insight about why she in particular would make a good leader of vampires.

So, in the end Chosen held my attention and had some high points, but my experience was marred by the rocky early chapters in which there's simply too much sex, too often. The series has improved but still doesn't really stand out in the overcrowded vampire field.

Strong urban fantasy
By A Customer
Her first year since the change is coming and Anna Strong has adjusted to becoming a vampire though she does not like it. Instead, Anna tries to cling to whatever humanity is left even as her vampiric needs are starting to supersede all else. She fears the legend that she is the Chosen One as she just wants to go back to being a human bounty hunter.

Anna and her boyfriend Lance travel to Palm Springs. There a dangerous adversary attacks her. She survives and assumes her archenemy Warren Williams assaulted her. However, she will soon learn there are even deadlier foes under the sun as Lance's creator Julian Underwood believes Anna is the Chosen One and hence has plans to use her for his own benefit.

Chosen, the latest Strong urban fantasy (see Retribution and Legacy) is an action packed thriller from the onset and never takes a breather as Jeanne C. Stein puts her heroine through a harrowing gauntlet. Anna takes some nasty shots emotionally and physically as she begins to comprehend how treacherous being the Chosen One can be when you're even unsure of your friends. This is a great entry in a strong series.

One of my favorites in this series so far!
By FFMOM
Anna Strong, vampire and bounty hunter, is about to reach the one year anniversary of being a vampire. Legend says that she is the Chosen One. However, she refuses to believe it. After all, what is so special about her that she would be deemed the Chosen One? She is trying to live her life as a human, maintain a relationship with her parents and adopted niece from afar, and she continues to work a human job as a bounty hunter with her partner, David. While on a job with David, she senses an evil in a human so great it is overwhelming. It's a feeling she's never had before. In this book, Anna and her vampire boyfriend, Lance visit Lance's home in Palm Springs and there at a get together she meets his sire, Julian Underwood. Again, she senses an evil in him so strongly, she wants to either run away as fast as she can or stay and kill him. A new power is developing. Is she really the Chosen?

I was very much surprised by the outcome of some major characters in this new entry in the Anna Strong Chronicles. In particular, the character, Warren Williams, who has been in all the books, and has told Anna from the beginning that she is The Chosen. He has wanted to train her and teach her all along about her destiny but she has refused to accept that she will be the one to unite all the vampires and provide direction for their future. She doesn't think she's special enough. She just wants to live her life as humanly as possible.

Chosen had a very surprising mystery, one I never saw coming. Anna continues to accept that she is Vampire. But the Chosen One, not so much. I was somewhat shocked by a turn of events in this sixth book, but I did understand the outcome. She had been deceived by someone she trusted and once that trust was shattered, there was no remorse in her actions. I have read all the books in this series, and I must say this was one of my favorites.

The Book of Athyra (Jhereg), by Steven Brust

The Book of Jhereg and The Book of Taltos collected the first five novels of Steven Brust’s highly imaginative fantasy series that Locus praised as “entertaining and worth reading.” The Book of Athyra features books six and seven in the series—Athyra and Orca.

Vlad Taltos is a sorcerer and assassin without peer—as deadly at spell casting as he is with sword wielding. Accompanying him on his journeys are two leathery-winged jhereg who share a telepathic link with Vlad—and triple his chances against even the most powerful of enemies…

In Athyra, Vlad finds he’s ready to retire himself and his jhereg companions, but the biggest hitters of the House of the Jhereg have something else in mind. In Orca, Vlad must repay a debt to a boy who saved his life—even if it means breaking a financial scandal big enough to bring down the House of the Orca, and possibly the entire Empire…

One good, one bad as Vlad takes a new direction
By David Hood
I wrote full reviews for each book. In brief
Athyra-4 stars, a nice book from an innocent's viewpoint about Vlad.
Orca-2 stars, a dull book about financial swindles.
In full:
Athyra-I have not enjoyed a Vlad book as much as this once since the first three. Switching the narrative away from Vlad was a refreshing, and necessary move to invigorate the story.
Savn, an innocent Dragaeran youth is a wonderfully sympathetic character studying to be a physicker when Vlad arrives at his town. He befriends Vlad and begins to find himself ostracized from his friends for hanging around the Easterner. Once he helps Vlad with his injuries there is no turning back.
Through Savn's eyes we get to see a vulnerable Vlad, a hurting Vlad without the cockiness, one who is rethinking virtually everything about his life, life in general and the universe. We see Savn grow through meeting the challenges of befriending Vlad, his sister also and we see Vlad changed and changing from the flippant assassin.
The pace is relaxed, without being slow, and builds to a climactic ending with consequences for everyone. A very well done effort from Brust, it was almost like reading about Vlad for the first time due to the change of viewpoint.
Orca-In this plodding tale of Vlad, much talking is done about a banking financial swindle happening. Like Vlad investigates Enron, but not that much fun. In order to help Savn, who saved Vlad previously Vlad must help out an old lady with the power to possibly heal Savn. This leads to the investigation of the financial swindle.
Vlad and Kiera play Joe Hardy and Nancy Drew, except again, it really isn't that fun. The book is dialog heavy and as exciting as my accounting textbook, maybe less so.
As others have said, the revelation in the last 10 pages is the only payoff for reading the book. Not worth it in my opinion.

Weaker entries
By newyork2dallas
This volume contains the seventh and eighth books (chronological order in the series, not publishing date) in the continuing series of Vladimir Taltos adventures by Steven Brust. Taltos is all of the following: a sometime assassin, mobster, witch, philosopher, swordsman, noble, and detective who lives a stranger-in-a-strange-land scenario as what we would consider a normal human in a nation of 6.5 or 7-foot tall humanoids (Draegerans) who often have numerous magical abilities. The books, other than "Taltos" are named for the houses of the 16 noble classes and one peasant class in the society Taltos lives in. Here are the books in chronological order, not publishing order, with the books in the "Athyra" compendium in CAPS:

Taltos 4.5* -- Brust's funniest of the series, loaded with deadpan humor. This is a simple tale that establishes the beginnings of Taltos' relationships with many of the recurring characters of the other books. In regular paperback form it's 180 pages and you can read it in a few hours. Well-paced, good resolution of the three plotlines

Yendi 4* -- complex and satisfying for a short book, humorous

Jhereg 5* -- the first-published and best of the bunch, gives useful background and is the real starting point of the series

Teckla 2* -- maudlin and introspective without much context or reason for the tone

Phoenix 4* -- picks up the pace after Teckla and re-establishes some of Taltos' business arrangements (he's an assassin and a small-time mob capo), has a complex and twisting plotline and has more of the humor of the first three books. Nonetheless, it still has some of the pall from the Teckla woven throughout the story.

Dragon 4* -- published 8th, returns to form of witty banter, smart introspection and twisty plotting of earlier books

ATHYRA 1* -- meandering and depressing; only book not told from Vlad Taltos' first-person point of view, actionless and largely themeless

ORCA 4* -- better plotting and pacing for this Athyra follow-up, plus intricate mob-financing issues explored by Taltos in unmasking Orca-house mob syndicate

Issola 4* -- Newest entry is a philosophical stemwinder about the history of Vlad-world and the purposes of the g*ds. Therefore, Issola is not the place to start but it is a solid addition to the series if you've read some of the others.

All said, two of the weaker entries (Orca ranks seventh of the nine books) in the Vlad Taltos series are compiled in the Book of Athyra. Athyra itself is dour, boring, and unquestionably the worst of the lot (most of which, in contrast, are good to near excellent). Athyra is the only one not told from Vlad Taltos' first-person perspective, is one of the longer books in the series, and has neither the humor nor adventure that characterize the other eight. Brust is an experimenter as a writer -- a praiseworthy concept -- but Athyra essentially goes awry.

Orca is not overly memorable, but at least it is within the expectations of the rest of the books -- some swashbuckling, wise-acre humor, twisted plot and solid resolution. Buy it separately and skip Athyra altogether and you really don't miss anything.

Brust continues with the adventures of Vlad Taltos
By Omar Siddique
The two books in this volume, Athyra and Orca, differ from the other volumes up to this point in the series in that they are not primarily narrated from the point of view of the Vlad Taltos. While it is interesting to hear from the views of others, including that of a jhereg (the creature), some of the narrative is less compelling than in earlier books.
By all means, if you have gotten this far into the series, do read these. I just personally found the narrative from multiple viewpoints less appealing than the single-point narrative in the earlier volumes.

Commercial uses include audio CD and digital audio tape. Each chapter introduces topics, presents intuitive or ad hoc design methods and relates theoretical results to practical design problems. It covers PCM systems from the channel coder at one end to the decoder at the other, including modulation and demodulation functions and a discussion of the communication channel itself.

From the Back Cover
Pulse Code Modulation Techniques brings together the theory and practice of PCM at the physical layer, where the "bits meet the silicon", so to speak. The key topics of symbol encoding, detection and synchronization are discussed, in detail, both from a theoretical and a practical standpoint. Topics which have been largely absent in text books, such as multiplexing, formatting and format synchronization, are also considered. Although PCM evolved as a communication technology, it has become an important technology in data recording. In a sense, magnetic or optical media are just specialized communication media and the key technologies discussed in this book are just as important to recording applications as to communications. PCM codes used for magnetic recording applications are discussed along with traditional communication codes. The design, analysis and implementation of a PCM system requires knowledge of very specific techniques associated with detection, synchronization and coding. The techniques have evolved from both ad hoc methods and complex theory. One of the goals of this book is to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the key techniques. Matched filters are not only discussed theoretically, but means for implementing them are also considered. The same is true with symbol synchronization.

Amazon.com Review
Lord Brocktree, the 13th novel in Brian Jacques's exciting Redwall series, brings to life the tale of how the greatest badger lord of all came to save Salamandastron, the mountain home of many heroic creatures. Everybeast will love heroic Lord Brocktree and his amazing adventure.

As the story opens, the villainous Ungatt Trunn, a menacing wildcat, has brought his powers to bear on Salamandastron, threatening the peace-loving beasts who live there.

Loneliness was everywhere. Hopelessness and an air of foreboding had settled over the western shores, casting their pall over land, sea and the mountain of Salamandastron. Yet nobeast knew the cause of it.

But all is not lost. Old Lord Stonepaw, the venerable Badger Ruler, summons the strongest of the strong to take over as lord of the mountain fortress and battle the evil wildcat. Lord Brocktree, far away from the trouble, begins to have visions that beckon him to Salamandastron. He travels there with his companion, a young haremaid named Dotti. But can he raise an army in time to smash Ungatt Trunn's terrifying Blue Hordes?

Like all the Redwall books, Lord Brocktree is a rollicking tale of adventure, war, magic, and beastly battles. The animal characters are sometimes brusque and brutal, and there's a strong current of darkness in the stories, as well as no-nonsense death scenes and strong language. But for fans of medieval fantasy adventure with a twist, this unforgettable series continues to satisfy. (Ages 9 and older) --Therese Littleton

From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-Jacques shows no signs of flagging in this latest tale about a Badger Lord named Brocktree, a fatally beautiful haremaid named Dotti, and an evildoing wildcat named Ungatt Trunn. Trunn and his Hordebeasts have invaded Salamandastron and caused the death of Lord Stonepaw. However, from off in the forests and meadows, help is coming. The shrews, hedgehogs, moles, river and sea otters, squirrels, and a pack of Highland hares band together with Brocktree and Dotti. Trunn is eventually defeated, and the Horde quickly disperses, leaving the "Redwall" creatures to their favorite pastimes-dancing, singing, and of course, eating. Jacques continues to have an amazing gift for keeping his story fresh. He starts this one from two different points: the invasion, and the adventures of Dotti, Brocktree, and their friends. The two stories converge near the end of the book for a thrilling conclusion. The story itself is framed as a history written by the current lord of Salamandastron. The plot is well balanced, chapters of floating on a river and feasting with friends are set in counterpoint with the horrors of war. The characters, as always, are easily defined and identified by their accents, a Jacques specialty. It may take some readers a while to figure out what everyone is saying, but they will make the effort as these beasts are all so engaging. There is no need to have read the earlier books for this one to make sense, but new readers will undoubtedly be asking for more, and fans will just eat it up.

From Booklist
Gr. 5-8. As in Salamandastron (1993), the struggle in the thirteenth episode of Jacques' popular Redwall saga involves the invasion and capture of the mountain fortress Salamandastron by a vicious villain. This time, the evildoers are dastardly wildcat Ungatt Trunn and his Blue Hordes. True to the author's customary and successful formula, the story involves a desperate quest and an unlikely friendship. A brash young haremaid, Dotti (Dorothea Duckfontein Dillworthy), a self-proclaimed "fatal beauty," is on her way to Salamandastron so that her parents won't have nervous breakdowns. The great Badger Lord Brocktree, whose dreams of danger are guiding him to the same place, meets Dotti in the forest, and they join forces. As the duo make their way toward their destination, they experience a number of adventures and gather an ever-increasing army of moles, otters, hares, squirrels, and others to wage war against the evil forces. As expected, a good bit of humor and a lot of feasting leaven the bloody action. Characterizations remain true to the series, whose many fans will enjoy this "hare"-raising tale. Sally Estes

This is the thirteenth book in the redwall series. It is another great book in the redwall series. The story focuses on Lord Brocktree, a badger lord, who is on his journey to rule the mountain stronghold of Salamandastron. Along his way he mets Dotti the young haremaid and Ruff the otter. He also mets several other creatures whom he has adventures with. Meanwhile, at Salamandastron, Lord Stonepaw,Lord Brocktree's father, has to defend the mountain from the evil wildcat named Ungatt Trunn and his evil Blue Hordes. He is a ruthless killer who wants to conquer Salamandastron for himself and his hordes. The last battle in this book is absolutely spectacular. This is easily one of my favorite redwall books. All of the books that are in the redwall series are great. Brian Jacques is one of the best storytellers and this book shows his skill. I recommend this book to anyone ,if your a redwall fan or not, and this is a must have book that everyone should own.

Yet Another Epic From The World of Redwall
By Patrick Kachelmeier
I first recieved this book as a Christmas gift from my parents earlier this year (I'm 15 years old). I knew nothing about the book, but what brought my parents to buy this book for me was it's author, Brian Jacques. I first read "Redwall" in fall 1999, and since have continued to read all the books he has written in a span of less than a year and a half. So when I recieved "Lord Brocktree" and picked it up later in the day and read it, I did not stop until I went to bed after midnight. I it such a glorious book in so many ways. Finally, we have an epic depicting the life of the First great Badger Lord, Brocktree. I have always been wondering what ever happened to him after I first heard about him in "Mossflower".
I will keep on reading Brian Jacque's work until I am stripped of my vision. I can't wait until his next book comes out this fall 2001! I strongly reccomend this book to everyone who wants to get away from modern life and read about what it was like when all modern technology was nothing. After reading one of his books, you'll understand what I mean...

EULALIAAAAAAA!!!
By Nick Chu
Eulaliaaaaa! This awesome war cry suits the ferocity, plot, and action of this awesome book. "Lord Brocktree" is actually the first book everyone should read in the Redwall series by Brian Jacques. Of course, it's not the first book Mr. Jacques has written, but it's the first book in the chronological series. This is strictly advised for people who like to "have their ducks in a row."
So the book's strengths? Excellent action, amazing details that build the plot and lead to the climax, and cute/hilarious/downright evil/friendly/calm/strategic creatures that make up the world of Redwall. Above all, the book has an EXCELLENT atmosphere/mood of doom, death, friendship, rivalry, and suspense.
The book's weaknesses? The end went a bit quickly and didn't prove to have as good a climax as a reader should have expected after all the plot details before. Indeed, it was almost as if Mr. Jacques was hurrying to finish the book by a certain deadline. Anyway, that's why I gave the book 4 stars; it's the only weakness I could find.
To conclude, "Lord Brocktree" is definitely a book YOU should read today if you're a fan of fantasy and/or you have a fondness for animals. EULALIAAAAA...what are you waiting for?!?
*By the way, I've already submitted a review for this book under a 12-year-old reader. I was forced to do that because I hadn't signed up for an Amazon Book Reviewer yet...sorry for the confusion. ...

From Kirkus Reviews
Advanced space-humans and alien invaders go head-to-head in Tombstone, Arizona, in 1881. (western fans will exclaim, Aha!) Macklin and Doris are descendants of the lost Roanoke colony, some of whom were rescued and taken into space by benevolent aliens of the multispecies Associative. As Monitors, they keep an eye on Earth, but when the predatory alien Kra'agh attack their ship, they crash, separately, on Earth. His memory lost, Macklin wanders into Tombstone, where he finds a room at the boardinghouse of kindly and attractive widow Sarah Nevers. Inevitably, he gets mixed up with the Earp brothers and their allies. Meanwhile, the two ghastly Kra'agh hunters (they can eat terrestrial life-forms and feed on pain and fear) kill some humans, absorb the contents of their brains, disguise themselves with projected illusions, and creep in pursuit. Naturally, they side with the Clanton gang. Doris finally catches up with Macklin and helps him remember what's going on, but his intelligent Companion is damaged and requires rare elements for repair. The Kra'agh, however, have destroyed the Monitors' Moon base and are poised to invade Earth. They try to trap Macklin at the OK Corral, playing their part in the historic shootout, then attack the boardinghouse and grab Sarah. Doris will attempt to rendezvous with an emergency pickup craft, while Macklin follows poor Sarah. First-novelist/actor Boxleitner (the Babylon 5 series, etc.) gives this oft-exploited scenario an organized, crisply delivered, and well-informed workout. Expect sequels. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A Very Good Read
By S. Weiss
A local bookseller recommended this novel. Science fiction and the wild West? Talk about original! Very surprised at how good it is and am now reading the followup "Searcher" book. Wish the author would have continued the series, as he is a very imaginative writer.

Not just for die-hard Boxleitner fans!
By Amazon Customer
The man really did it! This first novel gives us a taste of Harry Turtledove, with a dash of Stephen King, and a healthy dose of Mr. Boxleitner's wit, charm and experienced actor's sense of story. It is definitely a first novel AND a setup for a sequel so the exposition is sometimes too lengthy, in moments even diluting the suspense, BUT when it revs up, it really revs up and is well worth the read--looking forward to more from such a creative storyteller!

Western science fiction - an interesting blend
By Amazon Customer
I picked this one up because it's no secret that Bruce Boxleitner is a fan and reader of science fiction and a history buff. I thought it would be interesting to see how he managed to combine the two in this tale purporting to be first contact with aliens in 1881 in the Old West
The protagonist is Monitor Macklin, a human being from stock that came originally from Earth, and sent to Earth to keep us safe from the predator aliens. There's a couple problems, though: the predator Kra'augh are already here, getting ready to move in, strip-mine the planet and enjoy hunting the Food -- us. And Macklin's ship crash-landed and he's lost a chunk of his memory. His AI implant is working hard to feed him data, but his head injury is making it hard to get through. To make it more interesting, Macklin arrives in Tombstone shortly before the OK Corral shootout (and if you don't know what this is, go watch Tombstone).
The story focuses on Macklin trying to figure out why he's here and who he is and why he knows what horses and saddles are, but has obviously never ridden. Meanwwhile, Monitor Doreen, Macklin's partner and lover, who did land safely (they were both dodging the predator ships when they landed), is busy looking for him. Concurrent with that, two predator scouts are on the move, killing some Food (and pleased with the sport can give) and trying to find the Monitors so they can't send for help.
It's competently written, if a little clumsy sometimes. Nothing fancy in the structure, just the linear storyline ad a few memory flashes of the past from Macklin. I'd guess that Boxleitner is a man with a story to tell, and has chosen to tell it more like a western than sf. I think the humorous side of the Monitors and aliens (who can take on the appearance of Food they have absorbed, but still smell and act strange) trying to fit into the "wild west," is not a well-developed as it could be. It's the beginning of a series. Not all the questions get answered, not all the problems solved. I am, however, interested enough to read the next one.

Jockeys, Millionaires, Widows, Gurus, & Murder
By Dave Wilde
In the Max Roper series, Kin Platt has moved the cynical hardboiled detective into the seventies and into sunny, Palm-lined Southern California. These are excellent, well-structured mysteries that are quite fun to read.

In this series, Platt generally features a sport and here that sport is horse racing. Platt doesn't stop there though. He throws in murder, multimillion dollar heiresses, ex actresses with multiple ex husbands, self-help gurus, blackmail, missing blondes, revitalizing spas, hoodlums, and more murder.

A fun read well worth picking up. Not a bad one in this series.

Trees in Urban Design, by Henry F. Arnold

This second edition has been revised and updated to include additional illustrations and two new chapters that examine improved street-tree planting techniques and the mechanisms for planning for trees in urban environments. The author questions Olmsted's well-known concept of bringing nature into the city, focusing instead on improving on nature through artful garden design. Throughout, the book's approach is to define the problem, establish the philosophical design basis, apply the design principle, and implement the planning and design.

From the Inside Flap
Trees in Urban Design Second Edition By Henry F. Arnold Reflecting the belief that urban life requires an "escape," city parks have long been designed in imitation of pastoral surroundings. Henry F. Arnold challenges this tired romantic style that disregards the urban environment—and shows how trees can be used to enhance urban elements rather than hide them. He encourages landscape architects and city planners to utilize trees, not as decoration, but as living building materials to create and reinforce urban spaces. The revised Second Edition adds practical value to the work, answering many of the questions that were raised as a result of the original volume. Trees in Urban Design, Second Edition, concentrates two new chapters on the more utilitarian issues of urban tree planting. Chapter Six deals substantively with the significant changes in urban tree-planting techniques that have evolved since the original edition was printed. Chapter Seven deals with the revolution in urban forestry that has taken place during this same period, the economics of urban tree planting, and the essential government role in this immensely important work. In this way, the book has become more instructive and, therefore, more useful as a source of information. After a brief historical sketch of urban tree use, Arnold takes a broad look at American cities and establishes a fresh design approach based on classical principles. In contrast to the scattered use of trees, he advocates the collective use of trees in groves, rows, and symmetrical units, and explains aesthetic principles used in grouping trees in a variety of settings. To emphasize the most important design considerations in choosing a type of tree, the branch structures of prototypical trees not in leaf are displayed in over 200 drawings and photographs. The same examples are repeated in a variety of contexts to demonstrate the effect of different design principles. The book explains why the science of plant ecology is of limited value in formulating rules for planting trees in cities. It clarifies the need to reevaluate the claims made for ecology in an urban context. Obstacles to effective tree plantings — such as municipal policies — are discussed, along with ways to change these obstacles into opportunities for better urban design and increased tree plantings. The book also suggests a realistic method of budgeting for tree planting and maintenance. Trees in Urban Design, Second Edition, provides bold, practical solutions to important problems of economics, planning, and maintenance of urban planting, and offers effective programs to raise urban tree management to its essential place in the urban megastructure. Reinforcing the view of the city as the nucleus of human culture, this "ground-breaking" book is essential reading for architects and city planners.

Essential reading for landscape architects and designers
By jacoblindsey
As a practicing urban designer, I reference this book on a weekly basis. It provides a clear and concise understanding of how trees perform in urban conditions, from conceptual use in spatial definition to planting details. Many of Arnold's ideas were revelations to me, even after five years of training in landscape architecture. Unfortunately, the volume is somewhat dated, especially in its notes on current cultivar disease resistance. Still, highly recommended.

I am a landscape designer and arboricultural consultant in the UK.
This book was a revelation to me back in the '80s and has greatly influenced the advice I give to clients and what I teach my students.
It is a 'must-read'for all those responsible for planting trees and designing outdoor spaces in urban areas.
