Neuromancer, by William Gibson

A hard-boiled futuristic novel, NEUROMANCER uses as its stage the boundless range of modern cyberspace. The author's hero, Case, is a cyberspy, the best in the business. But he plays his games close to the edge and double-crosses the wrong people.

Banished from cyberspace and restricted to life in the physical world, Case hits the skids. But his luck turns when he gets another chance. To take it may cost him his life.

William Gibson is a guru of science fiction in the computer age, and NEUROMANCER is his "cyberpunk" masterpiece.

"Freshly imagined, compellingly detailed and chilling." (The New York Times)

Amazon.com Review
Here is the novel that started it all, launching the cyberpunk generation, and the first novel to win the holy trinity of science fiction: the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award and the Philip K. Dick Award. With Neuromancer, William Gibson introduced the world to cyberspace--and science fiction has never been the same.

Case was the hottest computer cowboy cruising the information superhighway--jacking his consciousness into cyberspace, soaring through tactile lattices of data and logic, rustling encoded secrets for anyone with the money to buy his skills. Then he double-crossed the wrong people, who caught up with him in a big way--and burned the talent out of his brain, micron by micron. Banished from cyberspace, trapped in the meat of his physical body, Case courted death in the high-tech underworld. Until a shadowy conspiracy offered him a second chance--and a cure--for a price....

Past Page 25 ...
By Loren Eaton
Adapted from ISawLightningFall.blogspot.com

The first time I tried to read Neuromancer, I stopped around page 25.

I was about 15 years old and I'd heard it was a classic, a must-read from 1984. So I picked it up and I plowed through the first chapter, scratching my head the whole time. Then I shoved it onto my bookshelf, where it was quickly forgotten. It was a dense, multilayered read, requiring more effort than a hormone-addled adolescent wanted to give. But few years later, I pulled the book down and gave it another chance. This time, William Gibson's dystopic rabbit hole swallowed me whole.

Neuromancer is basically a futuristic crime caper. The main character is Case, a burnt-out hacker, a cyberthief. When the book opens, a disgruntled employer has irrevocably destroyed parts of his nervous system with a mycotoxin, meaning he can't jack into the matrix, an abstract representation of earth's computer network. Then he receives a suspiciously sweet offer: A mysterious employer will fix him up if he'll sign on for a special job. He cautiously agrees and finds himself joined by a schizophrenic ex-Special Forces colonel; a perverse performance artist who wrecks havoc with his holographic imaginings; a long-dead mentor whose personality has been encoded as a ROM construct; and a nubile mercenary with silver lenses implanted over her eyes, retractable razors beneath her fingernails and one heckuva chip on her shoulder. Case soon learns that the target he's supposed to crack and his employer and are one and the same -- an artificial intelligence named Wintermute.

Unlike most crime thrillers and many works of speculative fiction, Neuromancer is interested in a whole lot more that plot development. Gibson famously coined the word "cyberspace" and he imagines a world where continents are ruled more by corporations and crime syndicates than nations, where cultural trends both ancient and modern dwell side by side, where high-tech and biotech miracles are as ordinary as air. On one page you'll find a discussion of nerve splicing, on another a description of an open-air market in Istanbul. An African sailor with tribal scars on his face might meet a Japanese corporate drone implanted with microprocessors, the better to measure the mutagen in his bloodstream. When he's not plumbing the future, Gibson dips into weighty themes such as the nature of love, what drives people toward self-destruction and mind/body dualism. It's a rich, heady blend.

That complexity translates over to the novel's prose style, which is why I suspect my first effort to read it failed. Gibson peppers his paragraphs with allusions to Asian geography and Rastafarianism, computer programming and corporate finance. He writes about subjects ranging from drug addiction and zero-gravity physics to synesthesia and brutal back-alley violence. And he writes with next to no exposition. You aren't told that Case grew up in the Sprawl, which is the nickname for the Boston-Atlanta Metropolitan Axis, a concreted strip of the Eastern Seaboard, and that he began training in Miami to become a cowboy, which is slang for a cyberspace hacker, and that he was immensely skilled at it, et cetera, et cetera. No, you're thrust right into Case's shoes as he swills rice beer in Japan and pops amphetamines and tries to con the underworld in killing him when his back is turned because he thinks he'll never work again. You have to piece together the rest on your own.

Challenging? You bet. But it's electrifying once you get it.

I've worked by paperback copy until the spine and cover have split, until the pages have faded like old newsprint. Echoes of its diction sound in my own writing. Thoughts of Chiba City or BAMA pop into my head when I walk through the mall and hear a mélange of voices speaking in Spanish and English and Creole and German. Neuromancer is in me like a tea bag, flavoring my life, and I can't imagine what it would be like if I hadn't pressed on into page 26.

Simply Put: Great Science Fiction
By Travis J Smith
'Neuromancer' is one of a handful of books/movies that I would pick to represent the science-fiction genre. Gibson succeeds on all levels here - I enjoyed the story, the characters, the settings, the technology, everything. Gibson writes about imperfection - he doesn't gloss anything over or try to make it too pretty. The characters are flawed, and have weaknesses - just like in real life. They live in a gritty world - just like in real life. And around them all, is technology - just like in real life.
'Neuromancer' is the story of Case: a hacker-type, cyberpunk, whatever you want to call him. He makes hackers of today look like amateurs - he totally immerses himself into the machine. Washed-up and raked over the coals, he gets a chance at a come back, even if it isn't on the most pleasant of terms.
Read this book if you are a science fiction fan - if for no other reason than to see what all the hype is about. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Clumsy, yet beautiful.
By ??????
A word here. Short, choppy sentences. Fragments, as far as the eye can see. Description of some mundane object. A color glinting ... somewhere. I'm clearly on drugs. Barely discerning the plot under this schizophrenic mess.

"Matter of fact dialogue."

"Yeah."

"I forgot who is talking."

"Pay more attention."

"How long does this go on?"

"About two hundred pages."

"Will I get used to it?"

"Maybe."

Completely different place now. Character with three different names. Try to keep up.

Drugs. Plopping down like a fat woman, sending crashing waves through spinal fluid. There is no tub to contain it.

People shooting each other now. The city is full of colorful lights and impossible geometry. The doorknob smells like ganja.

"Case. Jack in."

"I need more drugs."

One hundred ninety pages to go.

They're using swords now.

Now the swords are drugs. They have been all along.

Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth (Nightside, Book 6), by Simon R. Green

My name is John Taylor. I’m a PI for hire in the Nightside, the dark and corrupt city within the city of London. Where the sun never shines and where pleasure and horror are always on sale—for the right price.

Not a nice place to visit or a nice place to live. So you wouldn’t think I would care that it was about to be destroyed, by none other than my very own long-missing, not-quite-human mom.

But I do. I was born here, I live here, and I got friends here. They might not all be acceptable in polite company, but they’re my friends, nonetheless.

I know that I’m the only one who can stop her. The trick is, how to do it without fulfilling this prophecy that says whatever action I take, not only is the Nightside doomed, but the rest of the world will soon follow…

Please don't be the end of the Nightside series.....
By Deborah Wiley
I hope this is not the end of the Nightside series! John Taylor is a private investigator with a gift for finding things. He is also the son of Lilith, the creator of the Nightside, and Lilith has decided to destroy the current version of the Nightside and remake it the way she chooses. If you haven't read the previous Nightside books, do not start with this one as it is not a stand alone book and begins right where the previous one ended. This book is the culmination of an ongoing plotline in which John first discovered Lilith was his mother and then found out that his battle with his mother would result in the total destruction of the Nightside- to the point that future versions of his closest friends have already tried to kill him. In this book, John is desperately searching for some way to defeat Lilith that does not cause the future horror of the Nightside to occur. There are a lot of time shifts in the book, which Simon Green handles extremely well. One of the most intriguing things of this particular book was the evolution of Walker. I won't spoil the details by revealing more than that. Suffice to say, we learn a lot about the Authorities and this greatly affects Walker. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and sincerely hope to see another Nightside book on the horizon!

A great book, nice closure!
By Karissa Eckert
This is the 6th book in the Nightside series. All I can say is "wow" this was a good book.

Lilith has returned to the Nightside and it is up to John Taylor to stop her from destroying first the Nightside and then the world. The only problem is John knows that a future exists in which the whole world is destroyed and that future is getting more and more certain by the day. How will John oppose Lilith without destroying the world in the process?

For such a slim novel, there was a lot in this book. As usual non-stop action, continuous creativity, and lots and lots of fighting. I couldn't put this book down and the whole time I was holding my breath trying to decide how and if the Nightside would be saved.

Dead Boy returns in this book along with the Oblivion brothers, Shotgun Suzie, Walker, and Eddie Razor. The Powers are out in force seeking to save their city. It was an awesome book and ends quite nicely. If I didn't own the next two books in the series I would be asking myself if this is the end of the series. Since it's not, I am very curious about what the next few books are about. I am glad that there was some closure for this book and I am excited to see what the next book will bring.

Way above average even for a good series
By G. Robinson
This is the final book in a trilogy composed of: Hex and the City, Paths Not Taken and last Sharper Than a Serpents Tooth. They really should be read in order and although the middle book is weak they are all good reads. In spite of the apoplectic nature of the events there is some humor as Alex's reaction when he finds out Shotgun Susie and John are in love, then there's the high tech Doormouse (terrible pun), the attempt by the authorities to buy off Lilith and the reaction of the Gods to Lilith. Nicely convoluted plot and the way they get rid of Lilith without destroying the nightside is cleaver. This is obviously not the last book in the series but now maybe the series will go back on the track it started on. There are lots of things unresolved like John's kingdom and many major players are no more. If it wasn't for some plot inconsistencies I would have given this a five star rating. E.g. Tommy Oblivion split with John back in Merlin's time in the previous book but he gets back before he leaves with John and obviously doesn't know what already happened, likewise the doorkeeper remembers John's visit in an earlier time before it happened. (No I'm not going into the logic and physics of time travel but see Julian Barbour's book The End of Time [it's a real theoretical physics book] and also the Scientific American special edition on time.)

Welcome to the Nightside, hope it doesn't kill you
By Stephen M. St Onge
The Nightside is the black magical heart of London, where it's always 3:00 AM and anything may be had for a price.

Private detective John Taylor was born in the Nightside, of a human father and a mother that was something else, he's not sure what. As a result of that ancestory, Taylor has powers, including being able to find anything. As another result of his ancestory, Taylor has enemies that have been trying to kill him since childhood.

Five years before the novel opens, Taylor left the Nightside for the mundane world. Then a client waves a lot of money and hires him to find her runaway daughter, who's disappeared there. So Taylor goes home.

The story is told in flat, Hammett-like style that some of the reviewers didn't like, but I did. It fits the hard-boiled private detective genre this novel uses, while setting off the constant comic throwaway lines Green hands the reader -- 'A Neanderthal in a business suit was talking with a dwarf in full SS regalia.' A backpack nuclear bomb displayed in a shop window: 'Probably defective, have to supply your own plutonium or something. Otherwise, somebody would already have bought it.' Taylor and his client walk down a street, and find themselves in the future: 'Timeslip. Those things are supposed to be posted!' Or a man who stinks so badly, he attracts flies 'Every once in a while, one got too close, and the stench killed it.' An alley that can't always be found, because the alley doesn't want to be associated with a business located there. The reviewers who didn't find this funny are suffering humor impairment.

The setting is brilliantly realized: cars in the street, plus things that look like cars, many of them hungry for pedestrians; Strangefellows, the world's oldest bar; a street gang that consists of demons; the ghost of cafe from the sixties, where the Coke tastes better; the place the Timeslip takes them to, which makes the Nightside look cheery and harmless; the Harrowing, nameless beings without faces, and hypodermic sryinges for fingers; and the place where the runaway girl finally is found.

Taylor hunts for the missing girl, encountering old friends and old enemies, though sometimes he's not sure which is which. But regardless of what he encounters, he won't stop till he's done the job he was hired for.

This is the first novel of Green's I've read, and I'll be reading more as soon as I can get them. There are three more in the "Nightside" series, as well as other series by Green I intend to check out.

I like this book a lot. Highly recommended.

I wanted to like this...
By J. Greenwood
I really wanted to like this, and there were a few parts of the book that I did enjoy. But after reading it I'm left with a sense of irritation and dissatisfaction. So much so that I'm doing something I usually refrain from doing: writing a negative review.

The concept of Nightside is intriguing, and there's plenty of potential in it. But the main character (who naturally has superhuman powers and a mysterious background) is unlikeable and has the emotional development of an adolescent, the secondary characters are so one-dimensional I hesitate to even call them "characters" (the "house" had more personality than some of the characters!), and the interactions/scenarios/images tended to be so cliche that I found myself rolling my eyes and gritting my teeth (and I HATE rolling eyes and gritted teeth!).

The author seemed to think that if he threw enough descriptive extremes into the narrative (and did so with no subtlety), readers wouldn't notice that there wasn't any real substance beneath it all. He was wrong.

I'm giving this two stars because, although I found it irritating, I've read books that were worse.

A nice fill-in while waiting for the next Dresden Files book to come out.
By A. R. Anderson
I picked this up as something to read while waiting for the next Dresden Files book to come out. I was prepared to be disappointed but was pleasantly surprised. While not as deep, detailed, or thought provoking as the Jim Butcher series, this book did grab my interest from the first few pages. The story is light, quickly paced, and surprising. You never know what is going to turn up on the next page. It took only a few hours to finish. While similar to the Dresden storyline, there are enough differences to keep you interested. The book mostly takes place over the course of one day. The story is told in first person like the Dreseden Files and the main character is funny, self-depreciating, but I never quite developed a bond with him. Maybe after a few more books when we get to know him better. I do plan to continue with the Nightside series. However, due to the short length of the book, I doubt I will pay full price, even for a paperback, and will look for bargain prices prior to purchasing the next one.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Ideas abound in McDevitt's classy riff on the familiar lost-space-colony theme. In 2688, interstellar transports Seeker and Bremerhaven left a theocratic Orwellian Earth to found a dictator-free society, Margolia—and vanished. Nine thousand years later, with a flawed humanity spread over 100-odd worlds, Margolia and its ships have become Atlantis-type myths, but after a cup from Seeker falls into the hands of antiquarian Alex Benedict, the hero of McDevitt's Polaris (2004), Alex determines to win everlasting fame and vaster fortune by finding them. Female pilot Chase Kolpath, this book's narrator, gutsily tracks the ancient Seeker on a breathless trek across star systems and through an intriguing mystery plot, a bevy of fully realized characters, ingenious AI ships and avatars of long-departed personalities who offer advice and entertainment. The scientific interpolations are as convincing as the far-future planetscapes and human and alien societies, bolstering an irresistible tractor beam of heavy-duty action. This novel delivers everything it promises—with a galactic wallop.

From Booklist
McDevitt's latest gripping novel of future history begins in the late twentieth century, when a technological breakthrough costs the lives of its discoverers. Then it jumps seven centuries forward, to the beginning of interstellar flight and some of the first refugees from Earth. Finally, it moves into the very far future and to the seeker of the title, one of several looking for inhabited worlds that are the results, however longterm, of events recorded earlier. McDevitt is now being compared, quite legitimately, to Arthur C. Clarke, and not only because he has a similar kind of grand vision of the human future among the stars. He also has characters with amiable, or not-so-amiable, quirks, who in the middle of deciphering the secrets of lost races take time to worry about where to get a good meal in the next town. One of these days McDevitt is going to receive an actual and well-deserved big award to go with his professional stature. Roland Green

good story
By Christopher K. Koenigsberg
I really enjoyed this book. It satisfies various "itches" that I try to "scratch", by reading good mature science fiction.

One thing I appreciate about his writing in this novel (and its predecessor) is his use sometimes of fairly realistic first-person narrative, by a woman character. Male authors often don't get their female characters quite right (my wife made me especially aware of this).

McDevitt has carved out a sort of unique niche for himself, with this and some (not all) of his other novels, perhaps you might call it "future archaeology"?

For the most satisfying experience, before reading this novel you should read the two earlier, equally good novels, that take place in the same world, with the same main characters (Alex Benedict and Chase Kolpath): "A Talent For War" (don't be put off by the awful title) and "Polaris".

And for "A Talent For War", you can get it by itself, or you can also get it in a book called "Hello Out There", that combines it with a rewritten earlier novel of his ("The Hercules Text").

McDevitt's other, equally good series, of "future archaeology" novels, features a different world and different main character (Priscilla "Hutch" Hutchinson". That series starts with "The Engines of God" and continues through "DeepSix", "Chindi", and "Omega".

A too-little-known and stunning masterpiece trilogy
By jarowe92
Our family is always reading together *quality* fantasy literature.

To us the most under-praised and under-publicized fantasy trilogy of all is "The Noble Warriors," in three volumes-- Seeker: Book One of the Noble Warriors, Jango: Book Two of the Noble Warriors, and Noman: Book Three of the Noble Warriors.

It's about two teen boys (Seeker and Wildman) and one teen girl, (Morning Star), and it soars, with evocativeness and compassion and even tenderness, into their fantasy and magical civilization's politics, hypocrisy, authoritarianism, homeless underclass, gangs, wars, and above all these sensitive teen's heroism and their spirituality -- their engagement with each other, fraudulent cults, barbarous religion (including human sacrifice), peaceful (and magical) monasticism, and their true spiritual seeking.

It touches seamlessly and coherently on so many deftly interwoven themes. It is absolutely action-packed entertaining, audaciously intelligent, adventurous, deeply reflective, much too-little known, and a simply stunning achievement.

Very good SF book!
By C. Utterback
This is the first McDevitt book I have read and I really enjoyed it. It met all of the things that I want to read in a science fiction book. The characters were also very well built up. I particularly enjoyed the sequence with the Mutes and how the humans and Mutes view each other. I can see why this book won the SF awards, and I will certainly be reading other books in the Benedict series.

From Publishers Weekly
Lovecraft's Cthulhu meets Len Deighton's spies in Stross's latest, as the Scottish author explains in his afterword to this offbeat book offering two related long novellas, "The Atrocity Archive" and "The Concrete Jungle" (the latter previously unpublished). With often hilarious results, the author mixes the occult and the mundane, the truly weird and the petty. In "Atrocity," Bob, a low-level computer fix-it guy for the Laundry, a supersecret British agency that defends the world from occult happenings, finds himself promoted to fieldwork after he bravely saves the day during a routine demonstration gone awry. With his Palm, aka his Hand of Glory (a severed hand that, when ignited, renders the holder invisible), and his smarts, he saves the world from a powerful external force seeking to enter our universe to suck it dry. In "Jungle," Bob teams up with a cop, Josephine, to save the Laundry from a powermonger who seeks to stage an internal coup by using zombies as her minions. Amid all the bizarre happenings are the everyday trappings of a British bureaucracy. Bob gets called on the carpet by his bosses because he requested backup during an emergency without first getting his supervisor's okay and filling out the requisite forms. Though the characters all tend to sound the same, and Stross resorts to lengthy summary explanations to dispel confusion, the world he creates is wonderful fun.

Monsters & mandatory training
By Dave Wallace
To be fair, this (horror and bureaucracy with some yucks) is out of my favored subgenres but chosen as the book of the month by the local book & beer lunch club. It violated my small scale preference in another "earth is threatened" scenario. It did however make reference to Lovecraft's "Mountains to Madness" almost in a homage way and even though it had no real effect on the plot was still nice. There were cultural references such as "precious bodily fluids" (and who doesn't appreciate a nod to that brilliance) scattered throughout. While the mocking of bureaucracy, procedures and all that psuedo-science quality control poo so prevalent in the workplace was appreciated there were overwhelming paragraphs of exposition on the scientific & paranormal foundation of this imagined world that I almost wanted to skip. There were Nazis, Entropy (sort of), nameless horrors from across dimensions and (worst of all) mandatory training. I probably unfairly give it 3 stars.

A fun book
By Laura L.
Not too much character development but it's essentially a supernatural espionage novel. The premise is that advance mathematics and computer science can be used for what we might call "magic" including summoning things from beyond. The tone is dark and sarcastically humorous. Do expect a lot of pseudo-technical language. You'll probably appreciate this more if you are in a technical field. Good mood and visualization of setting. I liked it enough to get the second, which seems to have more character development.

By Amazon Customer
A kind of Bureaucratic Horror/Spy book, much more in keeping with the bland spies of "The Ipcress File", than anything by Ian Fleming or his ilk. Some great "cubical farm" humor (at least funny when you no longer work for a soul-sucking bureaucracy; hmm, maybe thats where the cliche came from), I'd guess the best way to describe it would be " Dilbert meets Cthulhu ".

Surface mount technology (SMT) is a mature technology. SMT allows placement of more surface mount components (SMC) into smaller and tighter printed circuit board (PCB) areas. This increased density means increased performance and power in smaller packaging systems, and allows manufacturing of smaller and higher performance products at lower cost. The advance of integrated circuit (IC) technology and the requirements of high density for high-speed circuity is driving the design of SM C to higher pin count and smaller package size. In general, the higher pin count and smaller package size are accomplished by reducing the bond pad size and spacing (pitch) on the chip level and the lead/pin/solder dimensions and pitch on the chip carrier (module) level. The last few years have witnessed an explosive growth in the research and development efforts devoted to FPT as a direct result of the rapid growth of SMT and miniaturization. Some examples are: hand held lightweight video recorders that can take sharp pictures, hand held lightweight devices that can track the worldwide package movements, and portable computers with tiny yet powerful microprocessors and large memory capability that can fit into a briefcase or into the palm of your hand.

BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!
By Anna Karenina
Bravo, Deborah! Your conclusion to The Pearl was worth the wait and delivered everything I was looking forward to in The Crown -- quality fantasy, classic sorcery, realistic romance, and a hint of humor and bawdiness.

I particularly appreciated the likening of Shradrael's self-destruction and withdrawals from using dark sorcery to that of an "addiction" because it lent a depth of relevance readers could identify with. The ultimate choice Lea faces between a cloistered, spiritually-harmonious life to that of one filled with sacrifice and painful risk for Shradrael was unexpectedly heart-rending and left my eyes admittedly moist! Also, it was refreshing that most of the book was devoted to the main characters, and not to a cast of secondary characters.

The only aspect of Lea's and Shradrael's story that left me wanting was the degree of restraint regarding their passion. Permitting a little more physicality between Lea and Shradrael would have fully fleshed out the romance aspect. That is, adding a stronger punch of romance would not have potentially detracted from The Crown's credibility as a fantasy work because it so well-conceived and written.

I highly recommend The Crown for readers who appreciate intelligent, original fantasy storytelling with a touch of romance from a leading female writer. The Crown is a thoroughly rich and satisfying experience! After devouring it in one reading, I am already eagerly anticipating the next installment. Any idea when that will be, Deborah?

Pleasant romantic fantasy
By HHK
This book is the sequel to the duology The Pearls (Pearls and the Crown). If you read the first book, you will want to read this concluding book to see what happens to Lea and Shadreal.

First, I think this book is mostly geared towards women readers of fantasy. At the heart of this story is the how our beautiful heroine redeems the tortured hero through the power of love. There are a lot of cliche's here. Lea is beautiful, blond haired and blue eyed. When she cries her tears turn to pearls!!! Our hero,Shadreal, is dark and tormented and has literally given his soul to evil. The chief villain is really, really bad. He is described as a Jabba the Hut like creature- morbidly obese and smelly!

There is nothing ground breaking in this two book series. Just a pleasant read for women who like a bit of romance weaved into their fantasy, and enjoy tall, dark, and tormented heroes.

I liked the fact that this book concluded the series and we did not have to wait another year for a trilogy.

Surpasses "The Pearls" in every way
By Jennifer Ann Conley
I've been a Deborah Chester fan since her Sword, Ring and Chalice trilogy came out. I learned of this new series and loved the first book but I was not prepared for how amazing it's sequal would be.

One might think that after the first book Shadrael would be a bit softer, not so fast, within ten pages you find out that he is still as dark as ever but as the pages continue to turn you begin to see how much he has been changed by Lea...and more importantly how much he has changed her.

These books aren't life changing novels, I don't expect people to compare these books to other fantasies like "Mists of Avalon" but these books are the feel good novels, ones not too in depth but more thrilling. The characters will draw you in. Action, romance, a dark knight missing a soul, a beautiful woman who cries pearls and the shadow gods trying to take back the land from the light-bringing emperor...what more could you want?

From Publishers Weekly
In what is probably her best-known work, The Riddlemasters of Hed, McKillip combined shape-shifting, riddle-solving and the desire for wild and unbridled power into a richly fantastic tale. Here, she returns to those themes, adding a strand of the fairy world to her rich web of enchantment. Prince Talis, heir to the Pelucir throne, has been away from his homeland studying magecraft. At the wizards' college, he discovers a mysterious book of spells whose words carry hidden meanings. Returning to Pelucir, Talis encounters the Queen of the Woods, who is looking for her daughter, Sorrow, lost ever since the mage Atrix Wolfe misused his magic to divert a war. Now Talis and Atrix must solve the riddle of Sorrow's existence, and rid the world of the evil that Atrix conjured. Though McKillip's latest is less strongly plotted than some of her earlier novels, her words and images remain masterfully evocative as she manages to invoke great beauty using the simplest language. Connoisseurs of fine fantasy will delight in this expertly wrought tale.

From Booklist
Driven by a formless fury when the prince of Kardeth refuses to halt his invasion of the kingdom of Pelucir, the great mage Atrix Wolfe creates a fearful hunter, "a warrior with no allegiance but to death." But the ensuing massacre of both armies and the king of Pelucir appalls the mage, and he flees to the mountains to live in wolf form among wolves until, 20 years later, the queen of the Woods demands that he seek out her daughter, who disappeared at the time of the great bloodbath. The ensuing story involves aspiring mage Talis Pelucir, son of the slain king, and Saro, a young, mute scullery maid in the castle of Pelucir whose background is unknown. Steeped in medieval legends of the wild huntsman, living trees, and shape changers, McKillip's tale is decidedly atmospheric, complex, compelling, and filled with rich imagery. Sally Estes

Review
A man who lives among wolves and hides from his magical mistake from the past finds his talents again needed among humans when a queen asks him to search for her missing daughter. His quest leads to unexpected love and adventure in McKillip's gentle fantasy. -- Midwest Book Review

Original fairy tale, rich writing, stunning emotions
By A Customer
For all of those fantasy readers out there who have read
fairy tale upon fairy tale, here is a familiar feeling original
tale which captures all of human emotion and brings you into
a dream. It has been said that a composer's power is the
ability to bring the listener, unwilling, into his state of
mind. And so it is here, as you are drawn in so subtly and
powerfully to each moment in the story until a tension so high
has built up it is impossible to rip yourself away. The language
is stunning, as in all Patricia McKillip books, and yet here
she seems to even surpass herself, every sentence a line of
poetry, never pretentious but always full of meaning.
Even though I myself have read many fairy tales, both the
originals and retellings, and admire greatly such authors as
Angela Carter and Anne Sexton who brings a wonderful edge
and newness to the tales, I was entranced by this book both
because of its originality and its homage to the form of a
fairy tale or myth. The most wonderful thing, however, is that
each character is human, suffering all of the emotions each of
us know so well, and therefore the story is always a grounded
and effective odyssey.
I would highly reccomend this book to anyone who misses magic
in the modern world, the sense that the Fair Folk are indeed
there, watching us. The feeling that imagination, superstition
and dreams are still very much a part of us, and can never truly
be forgotten.

Cinderella versus the Wild Hunt
By ealovitt
A bare outline of the plot and characters of "The Book of Atrix Wolfe" might deceive you into thinking that this book is yet another modern retelling of an old fairy tale. Here is the beautiful princess, forced into a life as a scullery maid by a powerful mage, who also turns her father into a deadly were-stag with a "black moon rising from his burning horns". Here also is the mage-prince who eventually recognizes the princess for what she is in spite of her formidable disguise, and returns her to her loving mother.
The sleeping beauty on the Kinuko Craft cover may do justice to the loveliness of the princess-turned-scullery-maid (at least prior to her transformation by the mage), but it doesn't capture her incredible will to survive after she is torn from her parents and dumped, naked and alone, into an alien universe. Yes, she ends up as a scullery maid, thought to be mute and retarded by her fellow kitchen workers. Yes, she scrubs pots from dawn to midnight. But the prince's kitchen turns out to be lively and warm, and filled with an eccentric hierarchy of cooks, sauce makers, plate washers, mincers, pluckers, boners, choppers, and spit-boys. McKillip goes into loving detail over the making and serving of food fit for a King's table, and when the princess Saro finally leaves the washing cauldron to fulfill her destiny, I for one felt a faint tinge of regret.
Who would have thought that a medieval kitchen could be a more interesting place to linger than a fairy forest where "water flowed, silver and sweet as honey among ancient roots"?
"The Book of Atrix Wolfe" stands many fairy tale truisms on their heads, including the character of the evil, all-powerful mage. In this story, the mage Atrix Wolfe creates the deadly Hunter that almost destroys the prince's family, but he does so with the intention of stopping a war. The Hunter himself is Death, but even he is not precisely evil. The prince rescues the princess, but only after she steals his book of spells in an attempt to teach herself how to read.
Patricia McKillip may have started out with a fairy tale in mind, but what she wrote was ornate, fascinating, and completely her own.

Fantasy Doesn't Get Any Better Than This!
By Elyon
What a wonderful book! Weaving, retelling and redefining the classic faerie tale in a style at once simple and elegant, McKillip brings a sense of wonder and magic to every page, creating a world at once familiar yet unlike any other I've encountered. The author has created a haunting fiction in which a thin veil exists between the ordinary and magical, the commonplace, medieval setting of fantasy and the barely perceived kingdom of the Other. This is the realm of Faerie, the closest I have come to it, outside of traditional folklore, since reading Tolkien, yet written with an individual vision that while drawing upon the rich heritage of mythology and legend, such as the Wild Hunt and the Queen of the Wood, breathes new life into the faerie tale, until the story has a character and wonder all its own.
Lovingly and richly detailed, this is not a book to read on an empty stomach. Scenes of feasts and the kitchen abound, delightfully rendered and salivating. The descriptions of the wood captures nature in all its beauty as well as its at times its frightening indifference. The invocation of magic and the spiritual realm are crafted in a way at once wondrous and believable, and for a few hours the reader steps into a world in which he or she wishes they could linger long after the final page reaches its conclusion. Mystery abounds, and it is impossible not to become captured in the author's written spell.
This is not, however, simply a tale of wondrous places and larger than life events. As well as writing lyrically, the author invests her tale with metaphor, and a meditation on words and their relationship to identity. The duality of things perceived is as much a theme throughout the work as is the ostensible tale of magic gone awry, and, as with the characters, one needs to look closely at the nature of what is named. I can think of no other author currently writing fantasy that uses the genre as a means to explore larger existential matters, a reflection upon not only the real world but also the world of myth. This book is truly a feast, not only for the senses but the intellect as well.
One of the best works of fantasy I have ever read, at once richly acknowledging the meditative and figurative themes underlying the best traditional folklore, as well as investing the genre with intentions rarely found today in fantasy fiction, written in a style as magical and beautiful as the tale being told. Beside the wonder of this novel, my praise is but a weak and mute substitute.

My favorite of the Myth series!
By A Customer
Even now (years after my first reading of this book), I still pick it up every once in a while for fun. I love the "Myth" series (I still futilely hope Asprin will write another one!), and I think this one is the best of them all. I appear to be in the minority, but I like "Little Myth Marker". It reveals an interesting depth to the characters, particularly Aahz and Massha. And its take on parenthood is alternately funny and touching.

Skeeve Plays Dragon Poker
By Arthur W Jordin
Little Myth Marker (1985) is the sixth Fantasy novel in the Myth series, following Myth-Ing Persons. In the previous volume, Aahz disappears out the back door into an unknown dimension searching for three people. After several days, Luanna knocks on the door to say that Aazh is in the local jail charged with murder. Skeeve and his friends go looking for him.

In this novel, Skeeve is the representative for Mob on Deva. He is also receiving a retainer from the Devan Merchants Association to keep the Mob out of the Great Bazaar. Skeeve still doesn't know how to travel between dimensions without a D-hopper.

Aahz is a Pervect from the Perv dimension. He had been a master magician, but lost his magical powers due to a practical joke. Now he is Skeeve's partner and mentor.

Massha is a mechanic from an unknown dimension. She uses devices to produce her magic. Now she is learning real magic from Skeeve as his apprentice.

Chumley is a Troll from the Trollia dimension. He is also the big brother of Tananda. He uses the Crunch persona to hide his shyness.

Tananda is a Trollop from the Trollia dimension. She has green skin and hair and a very voluptuous body. She is Chumley's little sister and an assassin.

Don Bruce is a fairy Godfather, a senior member of the Mob on Klah. He is responsible for the Deva operation.

Guido is a senior gangster in the Mob. He is now the personal bodyguard of the Great Skeeve.

Nunzio is Guido's cousin and also a senior gangster. He is now another personal bodyguard of Skeeve.

Bunny is a top-heavy little redhead. She is also the niece of Don Bruce.

The Geek is a Deveel from the Deva dimension. He is also a bookie, of which Deva has many.

Pidge is a human living on Deva. He likes to play dragon poker. His name comes from "pigeon" because he loses so often.

Markie is the daughter of Pidge. IF he loses, Pidge leaves Markie as his marker.

In this story, Skeeve is playing dragon poker in a game run by the Geek. He is winning big, although he doesn't really understand the game. Instead, he bets against the players, based on their observed patterns.

At one point, Pidge runs out of cash. He asks the Geek to take his marker. When another player objects, Skeeve offers to take his marker. When Skeeve wins the hand, everybody else cashes in their chips and leaves.

Then the Geek brings over Markie and gives her to Skeeve. He is confused, so the geek explains that she is collateral for Pidge's debt. She asks if Skeeve is her pretend daddy.

On the way back to the tent, Markie asks Skeeve if they will be living alone or does he have a girlfriend. He answers "No". Then he explains about Tananda, Chumley, Guido, Nunzio, Buttercup, Gleep, Massha, and Aahz. Markie is impressed by the bodyguards, but not much else.

Before reaching home, Skeeve warns Markie about Aahz. He tells her to stay behind him. Then he walks into the lion's den.

Naturally, the inside of the tent is much larger than the outside. But Aahz rather fills the expanse. He has heard about the card game and is very upset. After learning that Skeeve won the game, Aahz starts to cool down.

Then Markie speaks up. Aahz boils over, actually yelling at Skeeve about slavery until Skeeve explains that she is only Pidge's marker. Eventually he understands and Markie is accepted into the household. Massha takes her to the pantry for a snack.

Then Guido tells him that Don Bruce has sent him a present. The fairy Godfather has given Bunny to him as his moll. Skeeve objects strongly, but Guido insists that he has to have a moll.

So Skeeve sends Bunny with Nunzio to the pink bedroom and Markie with Massha to the blue bedroom. He sends Guido to explain Bunny to Aahz. The next morning, he wakes up with Bunny in his bed.

This tale involves Skeeve in a very confusing mess. He is gaining a reputation as a hotshot dragon poker player. He is the target of a character assassin called the Ax. And he is surrounded by beautiful women.

Who could blame Skeeve for being confused? The next installment in this series is M.Y.T.H. Inc. Link. Read and enjoy!

Highly recommended for Asprin fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of simple magic, raging rumors, and maturing magicians. If anyone has not previously read this series, the initial volume is Another Fine Myth.
