American falls through Gate into Escore
By ealovitt
Andre Norton has a soft spot for cats, and she includes a wild cat and her two kittens in this latest venture into magical Escore. American Kelsie McBlair falls through an ancient stone gate in the Scottish Highlands while rescuing a wounded wild cat. She and the cat (who promptly gives birth to two kittens) are besieged on the other side of the Gate by a Dark Rider and a pack of skeletal hounds, almost before Kelsie realizes she is no longer in Scotland. (It will take the rest of the book to persuade her that there is no way back to her home world).
When a dying Witch bequeaths her true name and her jewel of power to Kelsie, the American finds herself compelled to take up the woman's sorcerous mission into the heart of Escore, where magic lies in "trembling balance between the forces of Light and those of the Dark."
"The Gate of the Cat" is a stand-alone fantasy in Norton's fabulous Witch World series. It takes place (roughly) after the conclusion of "Sorceress of the Witch World" and "Trey of Swords," since characters from both of those novels also play roles (or are at least mentioned) in this book. Yonan, a former border guard of Estcarp and the main narrator of "Trey of Swords," is one of Kelsie's companions on her reluctant quest. Their other companion is a rather nasty, man-hating witch who is known as Wittle. (Sometimes Norton attaches clunky names to her characters, but Wittle really is Wittle).
The magic and the narrative pace are vintage Norton, and she takes us into one of the vilest places of the Dark to be found in any of the Escore fantasies.
"The Gate of the Cat" is a must-read for Witch World fans.

Not quite what I expected
By Jeffries
I've read (and own) most of Andre Norton's Witch World series (in fact, I am completing my collection now...anyone got a cheap copy of "Ware-Wrath"??). I'm not sure what I expected from this volume, but I didn't get it. Don't get me wrong, Andre Norton is a master and I enjoyed it...but something didn't work as well for me as in other novels in the witch world series. I didn't like the main character as much and the "cat" wasn't as large a factor as I expected (ciara's song, zathor's bane, the duke's ballad). I'll probably re-read the book and see if that changes my mind :-)

Still Andre Norton
By SciFiFan
Not up to the level of the first four Witch World novels when Norton was at her prime, this is still Andre Norton, and therefore still head and shoulders above those that came later, when she started "collaborating" with inferior writers. At least the characters seem real and you sort of care what happens to the protagonist. She probably should have stopped with this one.

Mammoth, by John Varley

Never afraid of risks, award-winning author John Varley took readers and critics by storm with his previous novel, Red Thunder. Now, Varley takes another leap into the great unknown with Mammoth...

In a barren province of Canada, a mammoth hunter has made the discovery of a lifetime: an intact frozen wooly mammoth. But what he finds during the painstaking process of excavating the huge creature boggles the mind. Huddled next to the mammoth is the mummified body of a Stone Age man around 12,000 years old. And he is wearing a wristwatch.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. When eccentric megabillionaire Howard Christian commissions a hunt for a frozen mammoth in northern Manitoba to clone a new model in Varley's rollicking, bittersweet tale of time travel and ecology, he gets more than he bargained for: next to the 12,000-year-old beast his team unearths lies the body of a human being, wearing a wristwatch, with a metal box—a time machine?—nearby. Christian hires Matt Wright, Canada's top scientist on the physics of time, to fix the machine, and employs elephant vet Susan Morgan to oversee the cloning of a new mammoth. The machine hurls Matt and Susan back to the mammoth age, then forward again, along with a baby Columbian woolly mammoth, Fuzzy, whose engaging story cleverly alternates with Christian's indefatigable quest for personal fame. Varley's sparkling wit pulls one surprise after another out of this unconventional blend of science and social commentary with real people convincingly doing unreal things. Fuzzy, though, is the true hero, an irresistible 15-foot-tall reminder of the wonders of nature and imagination. The winner of numerous Hugo and Nebula awards, Varley (Millennium) should garner new laurels with this outstanding effort.

Chriton Without Luddism
By Paul Thompson
Mr. Varley is hitting his stride in the near-future sci-fi/drama genre. I am a huge fan of his 8 Worlds (far-future) fiction and will in all honestly buy all his future works based solely on those story's merit.

In Mammoth, Varley is capturing the same spirit of wonder as Michael Chriton, but without the Neo Luddite ending illustrating (once again) that technology is bad; it'll come back and bite you in the ass. Varley's Mammoth takes a fun/fanciful set of sci-fi themes and explores them in a world filled with people who actually seem to *like* the technology they're surrounded by. In general, I reserve "near future sci-fi" stories like this for airplane and car trips-travel candy. Mammoth was definitely two cuts above the average for this genre, however, and I will recommend this book as a gateway drug for non-sci-fi readers to become acquainted with Varley's other work.

Vision not Persistent
By BobLely
Disappointing. I admit I have high expectations; when asked who are the best sci-fi writers of the last 30 years, John Varley usually heads my list. No one else has shown such amazing imagination and ability to create and immerse the reader in his universe (and he does it without elves). This book is ordinary; that's why a 3. The wit and voice so often (and boringly to him I'm sure) compared to Heinlein isn't there. An ordinary overused premise, ok writing, a dull plot device of an ending. An ok read from a new author (probably worth the papaerback price) but from him I expect more. Perhaps the problem is that like Red Thunder, its a "near future" book. True some of Varley's best short work was near future but not the best of the longer work. I want Gaia! I want the Invaded Earth!

Time for Baby
By Patrick Shepherd
Sometimes scientific advances are pushed into being by people who have no real interest in the science itself, but rather have an agenda of their own, often based on crass materialism, that drives the research as merely a sidelight to that goal. This book helps illustrate that point, as we find Howard Christian trying to develop a modern day version of a mammoth via DNA cloning, but in looking for source DNA material stumbles across not only a frozen mammoth, but a frozen man right beside it wearing a wristwatch and with a briefcase that just might be a time machine.

Howard hires mathematician Matt Wright, who has some new ideas in the area of time travel, to fix and/or duplicate that machine. Wright's investigation into the machine's operation eventually leads to a real trip back in time, for himself and Susan Morgan, an elephant handler who was hired by Christian to handle the result of the DNA cloning effort. The result of that trip, and the mayhem it does to modern Los Angeles, forms the balance of this story.

Each of the three characters is fairly well delineated, more than well enough to carry the story and drive the conflict. But there is a fourth character, a baby mammoth, whose story is told separately in interstitial chapters (styled as a young children's story), that actually may be the best portion of this book, as through this story the past of 15,000 years ago comes alive - the described environment, animals, climate, and behaviors of the mammoth herd all contribute to a sense of 'being there'.

Not so good is the basic plot, as it almost seems as if the story line was constructed with Hollywood in mind, with certain scenes just made for 'trailers', and too little work being done to really delve into the paradoxes that time travel (at the macro level) almost necessarily entails, even though such items drive the final resolution of the story. Varley has done much better in this area previously, and this work suffers by comparison with that earlier work and also in comparison to other works that have dealt with time travel, from Heinlein's "All You Zombies" to Asimov's The End of Eternity.

The net is that this is a good entertainment level novel, well written and engaging, with some good insights into the environment of the past, but has little to offer in terms of deeper meaning or any new twists on this type of story.

From Publishers Weekly
Butcher deftly mixes military fantasy and political intrigue in the rollicking third Codex Alera book (after 2005's Academ's Fury). Gaius Sextus, the First Lord of Alera, plants his nephew Tavi in a new legion, where Tavi can gather information on the rebellious High Lord of Kalare. Tavi, now a full-fledged Cursor, or spy, infiltrates the legion under the assumed identity of an officer, a station the green young man has not yet actually achieved. Treachery from a supposed ally opens the legion to attack from its bestial enemies, the Canim, incapacitating the captain and catapulting Tavi to the rank of the legion's commanding officer. Cut off from contact with the First Lord and with few seasoned officers to guide him, he must lead the troops in a defense of the Imperium against a horde of frenzied Canim warriors set on annihilating the Aleri people. Readers will cheer Tavi every step of the way. (Dec.)

From Booklist
The third Codex Alera volume opens with Gaius, first lord of Alera, recovered from the murderous attack in Academ's Fury (2005) and seeking two would-be first lords' destruction. Tavi, young protagonist of the preceding books, he sends off for legionary training. Kalare, one of Gaius' targets, then takes hostages, depriving Gaius of much support. Gaius' personal spy Amara is dispatched to effect a rescue, for which she needs the help of Lady Aquitaine, close kin to the other would-be and one who never balks at disposing of those in her way. Sequences of Tavi's basic training alternate with Amara's rescue mission, providing lots of action. Frieda Murray

Best of the bunch
By Dussan
Return again to Alera Imperia, the Roman Empire inspired fantasy realm from Dresden Files author Jim Butcher. A world in which all of humanity share the ability to use elemental furies, everyone except Tavi. As a Cursor in service to the First Lord of Alera, Gaius Sextus, Tavi must survive using his wits and intelligence in a world where everyone can command these supernatural powers.

This is a continuation of the last book, in which Tavi is now a full fledged Cursor (spy, assassin and special forces operative), and is given an assignment to impersonate a Legion officer and sent to the furthest corner of the realm to avoid a potentially devastating civil uprising that could prove fatal to the young furyless Tavi. This does not work out well as the Legion is faced with an invasion force of Canim, a savage werewolf like race, many times the legions size. When a devastating first strike against the Aleran Legion destroys the chain of command, it leaves Tavi as the Legion commander with no experience as a Legionnaire or an officer. With no furies of his own, Tavi uses every bit of his wit and cunning and bravery to stop the Canim invasion.

Like previous Aleran Codex novels the books are divided into two stories. One is Tavi's and the other is of another cursor Amara. Amara is faced with saving hostages from the ruthless Kalare, who strikes at the First Lord to take the throne for himself. Amara must make an alliance with the Lady Aquitaine, the First Lords political enemy, and a traitor Cursor called Rook.

This book may very well be Butcher's finest work to date, and I say this as a long time fan that reads anything with his name on it. It hit every note correctly, it finally answers the mystery of why Tavi is furyless and confirms the identity of his parents (though Butcher gave it away in the most obvious hints in the first book). Like Harry Dresden, Tavi is a hero you WANT to see succeed at everything he does. IN this world furies are used to not just manipulate the elements but to augment physical prowess of a furycrafter. It's the practical applications of furycrafting that truly sets this series apart. Tavi being furyless doesn't mean he is a Fighter/rogue in a world of wizards, it means he is technically handicapped because furycrafting is used for EVERYTHING. It's like a man with no legs.

Yet Tavi overcomes this handicap and excels beyond anyone's expectations by showing intelligence, forethought, preparation, and quick wits, you can overcome anything.

The ending is everything you hope. You read each chapter wondering how Tavi is going to overcome the odds, and it's not just his mental skill that proves out, it's his ruthless focused mind that drives him to do the things he does.

In the end you know Tavi will rip through everything if ever gets furies on his own, because he is so devastating without them.

This is a must buy for Butcher fans, and anyone that is looking for a new series to get into, buy Furies of Calderon and get started.

Juggling Three Storylines
By Miz Ellen
Cursor's Fury continues the three separate story lines of this enjoyable epic fantasy.

The main story line is the coming of age of Tavi, no longer a boy but a young man. Unable to wield the magic furies that he should be able to command, he settles for being resourceful and courageous. This installment sends him on what should be a safe mission to a legion composed mostly of trainee soldiers. By a twist of fate, this legion is the only one in position to oppose a foreign invasion of monstrous creatures and Tavi finds himself commanding the legion when the senior officers are killed by a magical strike. This is a great story! Five stars, no question!

A secondary story concerns Amara, an agent of the Crown who is now the wife of Tavi's uncle Bernard. While I like these characters, I'm starting to find their story a bit repetitive: desperate battles, flying chases, hair-raising rescues. But it's good action and good fun, easily four stars.

The third story line follows Isana, Bernard's sister. Isana, because of murky emotions and inconsistent movivation, seems to welter in soap opera drama. I wish I liked Isana more, but she seems to drain a lot of the thrill of discovery from Tavi's tale by clumsily telegraphing what's going to happen next. If I scored her story totally objectively, it would be low. However, I give Jim Butcher points for trying to write about a complex and strong older woman and I like the final twist he gives Isana's tale in this installment of the Codex Alera.

So impressed with Butcher
By Wyldfae
Many other reviewers have gone into the plot details of this novel, so I'll skip that and go immediately to the part where I rave about the series. When I discovered the Dresden Files I devoured the paperbacks my son-in-law loaned to me and then ordered the entire series to date in hardcover. Butcher is one of those authors that hits the ground running with the first book, gains speed until he achieves lift-off, and then cruises at 30,000 feet. Both the Dresden Files and the Codex Alera series begin well and just get better.
All three of the Codex books I have read so far have kept me up at night, and Cursor's Fury I just couldn't put down. I'm a huge fan of science fiction and fantasy both, but I'm not usually fond of books with a strong military focus. This series is an exception. Butcher's characters evoke a spectrum of strong responses and all of them are complex. The plots and subplots are both entertaining and labyrinthine, and even pages of battle descriptions had me turning pages long after my light should have gone out. I will buy this entire series as well, just wish I could find them all in hardcover now without paying $100.00 for the first one!

Silly Vampyre bites man for drink
By V. Keene
More adventures of a 'modern' vampire - for the depression. This light reading material debunks the notion that Vampires - or anyone, for that matter - are all good, or all evil. This particular vampire was a real nice guy, and became a real nice vampire. A good treat for people who 'hate' vampire stories . . .

Another all-time favorite vampire author
By Meddy's Mind
P. N. Elrod's vampire detective is another one of my favorite vampires. He's kind of like the Harry Dresden of the vampire world and I LOVE Harry Dresden.

I particularly like this book because it has several books in one. How convenient is that?

Books 4-6 in the Jack Fleming, Vampire PI series
By Helen Hancox
This is a collection of books 4-6 in the Jack Fleming, Vampire PI series and contains entertaining supernatural stories which leaven the 'vampire' moments with the humanity of our bloodsucking protagonist, Jack. He's a great hero because he's fallible, seems to get shot and knocked out rather regularly, cares for his girlfriend Bobbi and his friend Charles Escott and tends to blunder around not being quite sure what he's doing a lot of the time. Perhaps his blundering and being shot may pall over time but at the moment it makes for a very different, and very likeable, hero.

ART IN THE BLOOD
"Art in the Blood" sees Jack coming to the rescue of a man at a party and then being sucked into problems within the art world. Alex Adrian was a famous artist but hasn't done anything since his wife committed suicide; Evan Robley and his sister Sandra are also artists and when more suspicious events start taking place, including a death for which Alex Adrian might be responsible, Jack and Escott have to unravel the plot and work out what's really going on. The Chicago underworld plays its part as usual with more dodgy characters who have it in for Jack and Escott.

This story gives us more of an insight into the relationship between Jack and Bobbi as well as Jack needing to use his powers of vampire hypnosis more and more, leading to more people finding out what he truly is. It's another great read with a lighthearted feel and yet sometimes a darker undertone.

FIRE IN THE BLOOD
The first page in this book is great fun as we meet Jack apparently stripping Olivia Vandemore's evening gown from her and about to sacrifice her on an altar to Sabajajji, the Spider God. Fortunately this is just part of the novel he is writing rather than reality - although reality for Jack Fleming, Vampire PI, is often as bloodthirsty as this novel.

Jack and Charles Escott, Private Agent, are summoned to see Mr Sebastian Pierce, a rich retired Chicago man who tasks them to find a valuable bracelet that his daughter's boyfriend or a friend of his may have stolen. Jack finds himself shadowing the daughter to Bobbi's club and soon enough they stumble into murder and mayhem. A new member of the Chicago Underground, Vaughn Kyler, comes into play in this book and he's a particularly creepy individual who is resistant to Jack's vampire hypnosis. This book also sees the darker side of Jack having an outing after an episode of hypnotising goes rather wrong. Once again Jack finds himself in dodgy situations and only escapes by the skin of his teeth - is this ability going to pall any time soon?

The ending of this book is rather open and in fact leads directly into the next story, "Blood on the Water", although fortunately this episode does reach some sort of a conclusion. However Jack's rather more off balance in this book because of the darker side of his powers and we are learning more about him through it. Another great episode in this excellent series - a series that it probably pays to read in order.

BLOOD ON THE WATER
This story starts directly after "Fire In The Blood" and I think it would probably be rather difficult to understand everything that's going on, along with the fairly large cast of characters, without reading some of the previous books.

Jack Fleming, Vampire, had a bit of a shock in the last book when his vampiric nature got away from him and he nearly killed a woman. He's still struggling with the aftermath of those events in this story and is unwilling to use his hypnosis skills but equally doesn't want to talk about it to the rather perceptive Charles Escott, his partner.

The 'baddie', Vaughn Kyler, who we first met in the last book plays a significant role in the beginning of this story when he gives Jack the ultimatum to leave town or die. This gives Jack huge moral qualms - Jack knows that if he doesn't kill Kyler then neither Charles nor Bobbi will be safe, and yet how can he become a murderer? I think the way that the author showed Jack's fears about this was excellent.

In this story everyone is still chasing the bracelet from the last book and Jack enlists the help of Gordy, another local crime boss who's helped them in the past. Unfortunately a turf war seems to be breaking out with a new entrant, Angela Paco, playing her part as well. The three-sided war looks to be unstoppable and Jack has to decide on his actions with Kyler.

Once again, as in most of the other stories, Jack gets himself into various fixes and nearly dies. His physical limits are tested in a new way and there is more violence surrounding him. In the earlier books there was a lot of situation comedy where Jack was acting like a ghost and it happens again, very amusingly, in this book. However the turf war in this book lends it a darker feel and no doubt sets up for further instalments.

In short, it's another good read and we're getting further and further into Jack's character as the stories continue but this wouldn't be a good first book for a reader in this series.

Disappointing
By Keith T Gibson
I had heard for years that the Commander Grimes stories were like the Horatio Hornblower stories (but in Space), but unfortunately, this is not the case (if these two selections are representative). Chandler writes in a bland style, and the characters are wafer-thin.
Most annoyingly, unlike real people, Commander Grimes never is bothered by any calamity that befalls his ship, as if he has a direct line to the author, telling him that no matter what, it will all come out for the best.
The "Inheritors" even includes a scene where a knowledge of 20th century science fiction is required to solve a problem (arghhh! Nothing is worse than science fiction writers being self-referential).

Handbook of Environmental Acoustics, by James P Cowan

Because environmental acoustics has a complex mathematical basis, it is often difficult to determine whether acoustical recommendations are valid. Handbook of Environmental Acoustics simplifies this decision-making process and provides easy-to-follow explanations of acoustic terminology, noise control design, and regulatory noise issues. The book clarifies key aspects of environmental noise in basic language, covering: * Common noise sources--including the risk of exposure to common daily environmental noise sources * Current noise regulations, guidelines, and standards--illustrating all key points * Acoustic terminology and environmental noise descriptors--providing a foundation for understanding noise issues * Effects of noise on people and animals--emphasizing the importance of restricting noise exposure * Relevant noise rating methods--clarifying the use of noise metrics * Construction and building code requirements--explaining current requirements and featuring tips on how to avoid privacy problems * Measurement considerations--demonstrating standard methods and offering practical advice on how to ensure proper measurement procedures * Noise control designs--detailing source-path-receiver systems and noise control fundamentals In addition to traditional noise control methods, new areas, such as active noise control, sound intensity measurement, and diffusive designs, are explained. A sample municipal noise ordinance helps the user to draft an ordinance tailored to the needs of a particular community. Avoiding complex mathematics and analyses, Handbook of Environmental Acoustics is a user-friendly manual for urban planners, municipal officials, engineers, attorneys, industrial hygienists, architects, environmental professionals, and students in these fields.

An Excellent Primer for Anyone Interested in Noise
By E. Zwerling
This book is both engaging and informative. Written for non-engineers, this book is an excellent resource for a wide range of interested parties, regardless of their educational background. Consultants, citizen activists, municipal planners, and concerned enforcement personnel can all profit from this non-technical, non-mathematical treatise on all aspects of community noise. Mr. Cowan has taken an exceptionally complex discipline, and given an overview that can round out almost anyone's understanding of the field, and it's filled with plenty of genuinely interesting facts. Herewith is a list of the chapter titles: Acoustic Terminology; Noise Descriptors; Noise Measurement; Noise Control Terminology and Design; Noise Regulations, Guidelines, and Ordinances; Common Noise Sources; and Construction Issues. Included is a well-written and well-reasoned Model Municipal Noise Ordinance. Even the chapter titles don't do justice to all that's covered in the Handbook. In the Acoustic Terminology chapter, there's a concise section on the Hearing Mechanism, and the mechanics of hearing loss. He weaves in fascinating facts such as: the middle ear ossicles not only carry the acoustic signal to the inner ear, but actually amplify the signal more than 20 times between the eardrum and the oval window. You may consider yourself an expert in some area relating to noise, but it's almost a certainty that you'll learn a number of new things from this book. This book could be a tremendous tool for the motivated complainant who is faced with a noise source that is exempted from the local noise ordinance. If they want to approach the problem politically, in meetings, this will provide a crash education that can mold them into a knowledgeable advocate in a very short time. Put some power in your hands, as, after all, knowledge is power

Anna's Growing Up
By A Book Obsession..
The description of this book is a little misleading as it pertains to events that happen in the very beginning of the book. Crossroads is an very accurate title for the real story, as it is a journey with a major choice at the end. We're talking life altering. Anna has a big decision to make after a huge carrot is dangled in front of her, the chance to become human again. As she travels to find the cure with the help of Frey, she finds trouble in the most unlikely places. If she isn't careful her next step might just be the last one she ever makes.

Anna has always been a very brash character, constantly making hasty decisions on the fly. So, I was glad to see her take a step back to really consider the consequences of such a major decision. Something like that would be bound to have a steep price, both personally and due to her position as Chosen, potentially to all of humankind. Anna may think she isn't worthy of being in such a position, but I have to disagree. The entire time she is weighing her choice, the personal cost wasn't the roadblock, but the cost to others. Another worry of Anna's is that she can now kill too easily without remorse, making her no better than a monster. I'll have to disagree with that as well. She needs that ability due to her position, and since she never uses it on anyone who isn't evil or intent on hurting others, I don't think her conscience should worry so much.

I really love the dynamic between Frey and Anna. I'm kind of rooting for them as a couple in the long run despite their respective significant others. They just seem to be kindred spirits who understand one another completely. It's kinda funny that they have such a close bond when you consider their inability to read one another's minds due to Anna's long ago mistake. Perhaps it is because of this broken psychic connections that they are able to be so close by being able to let their guards down rather than constantly having to shield from one another constantly. Either way, something about them just seems to work and I can help hoping for more. Of course only time will tell and the twists in this book will make things more difficult than before, but I still think they have a solid chance. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

I think Crossroads may just be my favorite Anna Strong novel yet. It had a completely different feel to it than the previous books. Some of that is due to the change in location, but mostly it is due to Anna's growth and acceptance into who she is. The Anna we knew from the first book would have jumped through any hoops she could to become mortal again despite the consequences, yet this Anna completely weighed her options to make her choice in the end. According to Jeanne Stein's website, there are only two more books left in the series. Things have been set in motion now and I cannot wait to see where everything ends up in the end. Hopefully Anna will get a least a little slice of happiness in the end. She sure has earned it.

enjoyable vampire urban fantasy
By Harriet Klausner
In Mission Beach, SDPD Detective Harris visits Anna Strong over odd anomalies involving two hundred year old DNA found in the fiery death of his late boss Warren Williams. She knows she is the "Chosen One" (see Retribution). However, she needs a little time to accept her destiny and grieve the loss of her mentor and the betrayal of her late lover. However, the battle against Chael the vampire is still on as the ancient one challenges her position as he believes vampires belong at the top of the food chain not roaches scurrying for food.

Anna's former human lover Drug Enforcement Agent Max asks for her help to end the murderous terror of a rogue vampire. This Undead transports people across the Mexican border, but once stateside he drains the blood from his human cargo. Her partner David has found out some information about his lost weekend that Anna would prefer he not remember. Anna confronts Chael who implies he knows how she can return to being human, her fondest desire. To do so Anna must locate a Navajo shaman living as a hermit on a reservation. Chael also makes Anna realize he knows shapeshifter Daniel Frey has a young son that Anna fears the vampire or something else will target.

This is an enjoyable Anna Strong, Vampire urban fantasy as the heroine's life keeps getting increasingly complicated. Besides dealing with vampires like Chael, the human trafficker and the late chief's wife, she also has issues with humans like Harris and David. However, this is nothing compared to what awaits the hero on the Navaho Nation.

Something crucial missing
By Emily E. Gallup
While I agree with other reviewers that this installment offers a view of the continued growing up process of the ever evolving Anna, I cannot find much to gush about with Crossroads.

While I do not necessarily agree with the suggestion that the seventh book is "filler," I was frustrated by plot arcs introduced and not developed and plot arcs that felt anemic and rushed. Primarily, the early events in the book, Det. Harris and the Williams issue, Max and Anna's lingering ambiguous feelings, both these left me feeling as though there was something missing or unresolved. The showdowns with Judith Williams and the Long Whiskers felt stifled and anticlimactic.

I felt certain that the new boyfriend Stephen had backstory but it is not in any of the previous novels (perhaps in one of the anthologies published over summer?), though Ms. Stein does like the name and has used it for two other characters. I found this very confusing and wondered about this development, adding to the disjointed sensation permeating my experience.

As other readers mention, the maturation and acceptance ongoing with Anna that is critical to the strength of the series is present, but this also felt less fluid. Disappointingly, I felt this book lacked the well timed humor or poignant prose of previous novels, and this likely added to the stilted, let down sensation I have in reaching the end.

Bram Stoker’s immortal tale of vampirism told the story of how Count Vlad Tepes came to London and met his demise at the hands of Abraham van Helsing’s vampire hunters. But how did Dracula occupy his time when he wasn’t stalking Lucy Westenra and Mina Harker? These sixteen stories take the infamous nosferatu on a tour of 1890s London—where he encounters such historical personages as actress Ellen Terry, young scientist Nikola Tesla, Edward, Prince of Wales, and a writer named Abraham Stoker—in this masterful anthology from some of the best authors to ever sink their teeth into vampire mythology…

From Publishers Weekly
Dracula lives! but more in name than spirit in 16 new period riffs on his legend. Going back to Bram Stoker's original novel, Elrod (Time of the Vampires) asked contributors to this anthology, "What ELSE was Dracula doing in London when he was not being chased by Van Helsing and company?" Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, in "Long-Term Investment," and Fred Saberhagen, in "Box Number Fifty," both have him duping ignorant human associates into elaborate schemes to conceal his coffins. Tanya Huff suggests he was drawn to social climbers and other predatory personalities in "To Each His Own Kind." In one of the book's most intriguing entries, Judith Proctor's "Dear Mr. Bernard Shaw," he is a theater patron who cannot understand how the deaths at the end of King Lear ennoble human suffering. Inevitably, Dracula rubs shoulders with a variety of Victorian-era celebrities, including Gilbert and Sullivan, Doctor Watson, Prince Edward, actress Ellen Terry and even a young Aleister Crowley. Inventive though they often are, few of these stories capture the subtle malignancy and terrifying misanthropy that has made Stoker's creation an indelible horror icon. Excepting Gene DeWeese's "An Essay on Containment" and Gary A. Braunbeck's "Curtain Call," which attempt to be more than mere outtakes from Stoker's tale, the majority are modern revisionist interpretations of Dracula as lover, dreamer, swashbuckler and bungler. For better or worse, they bear out the editor's professed fondness for any Dracula variation, "good and bad, sublime and silly."

From Library Journal
This collection of 16 stories elaborates on the "life" and times of the world's most famous literary vampire. In Tanya Huff's "To Each His Own Kind," Dracula encounters the Prince of Wales, while Gary Braunbeck's macabre story, "Curtain Call," examines existence and the theater starring Bram Stoker and Charles Fort. Other contributors include veteran sf and fantasy authors such as Fred Saberhagen, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, and Nancy Kilpatrick, as well as first-timer Bill Zaget. This strong anthology should appeal to the large audience for vampire fiction and belongs in most fantasy or horror collections.
Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
This book offers stories centering on the most infamous vampire of all during the time in which Bram Stoker's novel was set. Dracula encounters Britain's crown prince in Tanya Huff's "To Each His Own Kind" and harbors sinister plans for him and his set. Nigel Bennett and P. N. Elrod's "Wolf and Hound" features an encounter between Dracula and Sabra, an ancient and good vampire last seen in their novel His Father's Son [BKL Ap 1 01]. In Gene DeWeese's "An Essay on Containment," vampire Radoslav Coulson tracks Dracula and, enraged by the Transylvanian's actions, decides to aid Seward and Van Helsing, of Stoker's story, in their fight against Dracula. Dracula fans who don't mind a little tampering with the myth will appreciate these tales. Kristine Huntley

A FEW GEMS
By mike coll
The 16 stories in "Dracula in London" are of varying interest. Some, like editor Pat Elrod's & Nigel Bennett's "Wolf & Hound" are absorbing and entertaining. Other entries that combine effective story-telling and intelligence are Jody Lynn Nye's "Everything to Order", Fred Saberhagen's "Box Number Fifty",and Judith Proctor's "Dear Mr. Bernard Shaw". Nancy Kilpatrick's "Berserker" and Gary A. Braunbeck's "Curtain Call" are especially intelligent and well-executed. Still, others are less successful--somewhat bland and forgetable. The nadir is K.B. Bogen's "Good Help", an awkward and eye-rolling attempt at humor that is wholly unfunny. In contrast, Bradley H. Sinor's "Places for Act Two" is genuinely amusing and involving. Of special note is the final story in the book--Bill Zaget's "Renfield or, Dining at the Bughouse". This is a bizarre contribution that doesn't quite fit into the premise of the anthology. There is no real sense of time or place. There is no "tour of 1890s London" (quoting the anthology's blurb). And Dracula doesn't actually appear in the story! Instead, we find ourselves neck-deep in an intensely personal and poetic rendition of one man's traumatic history--sometimes described from the point-of-view of the insects he has eaten! (How warped is that?!) Surprizingly, this is the author's 1st published story, and it's a knock-out. His passion for language is stunning--and challenging. One can't be lazy; the reader needs to focus to get through it, so different is it from all the stories that precede it. It is unique in this collection for expressing **emotional depth** and I found it extremely moving. We accompany Renfield on a journey of self-discovery. It's a journey well worth taking, and it makes up for some of the book's weaker contributions. Buy it if only for this story.

Great vampire anthology
By A Customer
Just about everyone knows about the events that have taken place in Bram Stroker's Dracula. However, while he lived in Victorian England Dracula became involved with other people and events that the author chose to ignore. Mr. Stroker left it to some of the most famous writers of horror tales to complete the full picture by contributing fantastic stories to this anthology.

Writers like Fred Saberhagen, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, and Nancy Kirkpatrick provide tales that show what the Transylvanian Count was doing in London. Tanya Huff focuses on Dracula's fascination on meeting the Prince of Wales. Nigel Bennett and PN Elrod have a Russian purposely travel to England to confront the prince of vampires. Elaine Bergstrom writes about a suffragette who needs Dracula's help.

The entire collection is excellent as no one fails to hold up his or her weight. Mr. Stroker would have appreciated this anthology.

Multiple Personality Disorder
By Bookseller
If you try to fit these stories into Bram Stoker's original novel, you will be very disappointed. The Count Draculas characterized in the various stories are all different. They clearly reflect each author's views on vampires.
I sat down and read this book from front to end, and as I was reading it, I began to wonder if the Count had a serious multiple personality disorder. The Count Dracula in one story would morph into a completely different person when I turned the page to the next story.
However, if you take each of these stories individually, most are very entertaining and well written. (Although I completely agree with what a previous reviewer said about K.B. Bogen's "Good Help" entry being thoroughly unfunny - having it included is the main reason I can't give this book 5 stars.)
Each story takes the same starting point, namely 'Dracula in London', and runs with it. The fact that they each take a different route and end up in a completely different place makes it rather interesting. Reading each of these stories is really like speculating how Dracula might have looked, if he was originally conceived of in the 21st century instead of the 19th.
