Outstanding!
By L. A. Kane
John Taylor finds things. It's his gift, a magical one. He was born in Nightside, a disturbing, dark, and absolutely fascinating alternate London where it is always 3:00 in the morning, monsters walk among men, multiple realities co-exist, and nothing is what it seems. Concepts such as love, luck, and lust not only run rampant, but they actually come to life as living personifications. Denizens of the Nightside can escape the mundane world to buy, sell, or find just about anything.

Taylor we've seen before in Green's previous novels. A few previous characters are back, but there are some exceptionally entertaining new cohorts who appear in this one: Madman, an eccentric genius who has witnessed the true nature of the world and was driven insane by it, Sinner, who made a deal with the devil yet was rejected by both Heaven and Hell, Pretty Poison his supernatural girlfriend, and Bad Penny, the sometimes mercenary/sometimes assassin. We learn some fascinating new information about Walker, Merlin, The Authorities, and John Taylor's past and possible future.

Taylor is hired by Lady Luck to uncover the secret history of Nightside and figure out how and why it exists. In exchange he is offered knowledge of who and what his mysterious, long-vanished mother truly was. Unfortunately for our hero, major Powers are lining up on both sides of his quest--both to help it succeed, and to ensure that it fails. For finishing his mission could mean very bad things not just for Nightside, but for all of existence as well.

All of Green's novels of the Nightside are well crafted, entertaining, absolutely fun to read, and, oddly enough, believable. The characters are so "real" and the settings so interesting that it is easy to suspend your disbelief and become carried along by the fast pace and excellent writing. I devoured this one in just two days. Very highly recommended!

Pay close attention to this one it will be important later
By General Pete
This is where the series departs from its first three installments of detective story and moves more towards supernatural mystery while some may have a problem with this I do not. With this installment the books started to get much more complicated and interesting. John has a fight with a group of combat magicians that will have implications for the rest of the series and that is just one thing that happens in this book.

Important questions are raised specifically the origins of the very Nightside itself. For each of these "origin" books John has allies in addition to Suzie in this case Sinner the only man ever to escape from Hell through the power of true love. All in all this character and his girlfriend contributed much to my enjoyment of this particular installment.

A great series
By A. Reader
Almost all of these have been reviewed before, so not much more is needed.

Its a great series, thats heavy on mystery, mixed with a little noir and some fun fantasy/ sci fi!

Also I chuckle whenever I read the titles, this one especially.

Great pulp fantasy, and a treat for AD&D players
By William M. Wilson
Whenever I sit down to ask myself, "What do I want out of a D&D book?" my mind immediately turns to this novel. It's a blast; if you're an old-time AD&D player like me, you can almost hear the dice rolling, but honestly, that's what I wanted out of this book.

It has a lot of the same tone as the classics like Fritz Leiber's stories, but tuned to Greyhawk and the wonderfully weird world of 80's D&D. Gord is a bit of a munchkin character, but he's cool and likable enough here that it's easy enough to look past. At least in this book; it's kind of intolerable by Dance of Demons. You get cameos from Greyhawk favorites like Mordenkainen, Eclavdra, Obmi, and some of the best demon lords from the Monster Manuals, you get background and flavor on some of the great cultures of the Greyhawk setting, and you get a collection of magic items and the like straight out of the DMG.

It might seem a bit alien to those who've been raised on the high adventure of Dragonlance or Forgotten Realms novels, but this is really a classic. It's everything a good AD&D campaign should be.

The story, briefly, is that a lot of different power groups are looking for a magical macguffin called a Theorpart. It's been located in the Sea of Dust, a harsh and brutal desert where the powerful Suloise empire once ruled. The various power groups explore ancient ruins and come into inevitable conflict. You can hear the d20's rolling the whole time, and it's just wonderful.

If you love D&D you've got to love the stories of Gord
By Richard Puzar
Some may say that Gygax wasn't a very good writer, I disagree, I love the way the story line flows and watch how Gord evolves from a scrawny street urchin to a move and shaker of his world.

This follow-up to Powers of Detection (2006) breaks no new ground, but offers 12 stories with enough well-paced variety to keep readers happy. In Charlaine Harris's notable Sookie Stackhouse tale, Lucky, one insurance agents good luck makes him a target. A resurrected Humphrey Bogart is murdered in Carole Nelson Douglas's Bogieman while Santa Claus investigates the murder of an elf in John Straley's Weight of the World. On the lighter side, a divorcée gets used to a menagerie of ghostly housemates in Sharon Shinn's The House of Seven Spirits and a young woman confronts a cave dragon turned loan shark to solve her fathers disappearance in Laura Anne Gilman's Illumination. Strong tales outnumber the weaker ones by a considerable margin and will satisfy fans of both genres. (Dec.)

Introduction

Evidently enough of you enjoyed Powers of Detection so much that Ginjer Buchanan at Ace Science Fiction thought a second collection was a good idea. On behalf of all the authors included herein, thank you!

Most of the usual suspects are back, with the addition of Michael Stackpole and Carole Nelson Douglas. Who would want to kill Sam Spade? Carole's got an answer for that, and Michael's got a new take on scapegoats that, okay, I know somebody gets killed and that's a bad thing, but I'm still laughing as I write these words.

Laurie King and Sharon Shinn offer up ghost stories, both with a very high goosebump index. Interesting how the spookiest stories often have the least amount of gore.

Donna Andrews returns to the Westmarch College of Magical Studies and the adventures of Gwynn the apprentice, who this time saves master mage Justinian from a fate worse than death. Charlaine Harris returns to Bon Temps, Louisiana, where the vampires are out by night and the insurance agents by day. What's the difference, really? Sookie Stackhouse knows.

Laura Anne Gilman introduces us to a cave dragon for a loan shark, and Simon Green takes us back into the Nightside for a grim little tale of justice delayed but not denied. Mike Doogan, tongue firmly in cheek, magicks up a traveling salesman story, Michael Armstrong indulges in a little global wishful thinking, and John Straley tells us where Santa Claus really goes during the off season.

Myself, I went back to Mnemosynea, for another tale of Seer and Sword. Turns out I like that world so much the Mage Guild commissioned me to write a Mnemosynean world almanac. I've even got a map now. And I admit, the ending of "A Woman's Work" involves a little wishful thinking of my own.

The great thing about fantastical fiction is its ability to put any ending on a question beginning "What if?" What if Santa goes Down Under on vacation? What if a cave dragon loan shark wants to make good on an investment? What if video games achieve the level of reality, what rights belong to the characters created therein?

In her introduction to The Norton Book of Science Fiction, Ursula K. LeGuin wrote, "In a story where only what ordinarily occurs is going to occur, one can safely use such a sentence as, 'He was absorbed in the landscape.' In a story where only the story tells you what is likely to happen, you had best be careful about using sentences like that."

And of course the great thing about crime fiction, aside from the universal human love of a mystery, is that by the end there is always a resolution, and, sometimes, justice.

Put murder in a fantasy setting, and "If you die, I'll kill you!" becomes a credible threat.

At least in here. Be careful how you go.

Unusual Suspects, Not Too
By Renee Huddleston
I went looking for this book to further my desire to read all of the stories from the world of Sookie Stackhouse. A red light flashed when I couldn't locate it in any of the libraries in our metropolitan area but, heck, I'm game! The book is neither terrible nor great. If you're looking for a bit of light reading before bed, the stories lend themselves to that timeframe. Not bloody enough to inspire nightmares nor disturbing enough to leave you cowering under the covers, they are engaging enough to help you unwind from the true horrors of our current economic plight. Ms Harris entry did, indeed, flesh out the Stackhouse universe. However, I once again encountered the only problem I have with her work: poor continuity. It isn't a deal breaker, but for OCD fans it can be irritating. (Especially for "downsized" copywriters who would love to get a chance at editing the next editions for accuracy! ;-))

Final take: not great literature, but fun enough if you enjoy the genre!

the convergence of mystery and suspense inside a fantasy realm
By A Customer
These superb twelve new tales focus on the convergence of mystery and suspense inside a fantasy realm. The stories are all well written, holding up nicely to its predecessor collection (see POWERS OF DETECTION). Charlaine Harris provides a Sookie entry while Simon R. Green returns to the Nightside and the editor Ms. Stabenow takes her fans back to Mnemosynea for what she describes as a "Seer and Sword" thriller. The other entries are strong with deep characters such as Laura Anne Gilman's loan shark dragon star of "Illumination". Carole Nelson Douglas' "Bogieman" answers one of the deepest fundamental questions of the universe: who wants Sam Spade dead (than again who does not might be easier to answer)? Likewise John Straley responds to another question of the ages: what does Santa do during his off season? Whether it is Donna Andrews's Gwynn the apprentice returning to cast a "spellbound" on her fans to read her story or Mike Doogan a "Glamour" satirizing the sub-genre, readers will enjoy this compilation. The remaining four are excellent contributions by top tier authors (Michael A. Stackpole, Sharon Sinn, Michael Armstrong and Laurie R. King).

A good "Whitman's sampler" of mystery & SF authors
By Esther Schindler
Short story compilations are always a crap shoot. It's unlikely that anyone will be thrilled by EVERY story in the book. Unusual Suspects isn't an exception to this rule, but I'm glad I sought it out.

That's largely because these authors are all household names, at least if your household has a big fan of mystery or science fiction and fantasy. (And really, how could it NOT?!) The book has 12 short stories from Donna Andrews, Michael Armstrong, Mike Doogan, Carole Nelson Douglas, Laura Anne Gilman, Simon R. Green, Charlaine Harris, Laurie King, Sharon Shinn, Dana Stabenow, Michael Stackpole, and John Straley. I've read work by a few of those authors (and I've broken bread with two of them), but I certainly wasn't familiar with the work of every contributor.

Stabenow, who compiled and edited the stories, gave the authors a pretty wide guideline: paranormal mysteries. As a result, the subjects addressed are all over the map, from haunted houses to ghost stories to fantasy worlds that just so happen to have a random dead body to deal with. I rather suspect you'll look first at the authors you already like (which meant I flipped directly to Laurie King's haunted-house story, which I quite enjoyed). But then I curled up with the rest, some of which have a distinct "heavy fantasy" feel (like Stackpole's "Looks Are Deceiving") and others a cozy mystery flavor (like Sharon Shinn's contribution). I think there was only one short story that lost my interest, causing me to skip forward to the next one in the book.

Like a lot of mystery and SF/F fans, I find an author I like and I tend to read EVERYthing they've written. I assumed, correctly, that this short story collection would give me a few new authors to seek out. I'm sure you'll feel the same way.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. The wildly thought-provoking first installment of Sawyer's WWW trilogy, serialized in Analog in 2008 and 2009, explores the origins and emergence of consciousness. Blind teen Caitlin Decter gets an experimental signal-processing implant that inexplicably opens up her vision to the wondrous infrastructure of the World Wide Web. Inside the Web is a newborn webmind, a globe-spanning self-contained consciousness that is just becoming aware of the outside world. Secondary plot threads about a highly intelligent hybrid primate and Chinese bloggers battling a repressive government extend the motif of expanding awareness. The thematic diversity—and profundity—makes this one of Sawyer's strongest works to date. Numerous dangling plot threads are an unnecessary pointer to the forthcoming books; readers will keep coming back for the ideas. (Apr.)

From Booklist
Caitlin was born blind, and when, newly arrived in tenth grade, she is offered a chance at an experimental procedure to give her sight, she leaps at it, despite previous disappointments. When she returns from the Tokyo hospital in which she underwent the procedure, it seems a failure. Soon enough, though, she discovers that, instead of reality, she is perceiving the Web. What’s particularly interesting is the background noise. Something strange is floating around behind the nodes of normal Webspace; a closer look reveals that, whatever it is, it’s not just meaningless noise. Caitlin’s story alternates with those of Hobo, a chimp whose claim to fame is being one of the first two apes to video-chat online; an entity of mysterious provenance; and a Chinese dissident blogger who is quite curious about why everything from outside China is blocked. Sawyer’s take on theories about the origin of consciousness, generated within the framework of an engaging story, is fascinating, and his approach to machine consciousness and the Internet is surprisingly fresh. --Regina Schroeder

Good
By Raphael
I had enjoyed reading other Sawyer's books and so decided to go for this one. It's surely well written and, as usual, contains a great visionary scientific hypothesis. I think, however, it's a little bit little less challenging than the other books I had read and, overall, less intense.

Fun read and an interesting idea.

Wow.
By Amazon Customer
We're asked to rate books here, and given 5 stars to do that. Well, this isn't the best book I've ever read, so I
can't give it 5 stars. But, it's WAY better than 4 stars, because it IS among the best books I've ever read. I'd
give it maybe 55 out of a possible 60 stars, which is somehow NOT the same as 11 out of 12 stars, just to
leave room for those few books that simply DO IT for me even more than this one did.

THIS is what I'm looking for when I read science fiction. And, it had quite a lot of what I'm looking for
when I read a novel of any genre. It grabbed me with the first page. Given how many books there are to
read, I no longer have the patience to read books that aren't about things that interest me. What always
interests me is stories about people, written in a way that I start wanting to spend time with those people. If
it doesn't have that, well, now I look for the next book, hoping to find it there.

There were several intertwined stories here. A few of them were left unfinished: What ever happened with
Hobo? We spent enough time with Hobo and his friends to care about them, but we're left hoping he
comes out ok. What ever happened with Sinanthropus? There were others, but I didn't spend enough time
with the characters in them to need to know more about them, beyond the role they played in telling the
larger story of the novel. But, the intertwining of the stories brings in other dimensions that provide
something that mostly only fiction ever tries to do, which is to create a world with enough complexity to it to
hint at how infinitely complex the real one is, while still being small enough that I can grasp most of it, and
care about it.

This novel has the BIG IDEA that I look for in science fiction, along with numerous smaller ones that I also
enjoyed. And, it taught me things. I think most of the lessons I've learned have come via experience; it
wasn't possible to simply read the highlights and the results in some book, and then grasp them well
enough to be able to use them. So, I like to be entertained enough to almost not notice that I'm also
learning. With a book that suits me, the learning adds to the entertainment. It makes me.think and feel as though I haven't simply passed the time. This author definitely suits me. I'll be looking for more by him.

A great lighter read from Salvatore
By Realist
If you've read Salvatore, you probably expect a lot of over-the-top acrobatics in the fight scenes, characters whom are developed through hundreds of pages, and a world that draws you in and never lets go. Spearwielder's Tale has all of these but not to the point of over-doing it so younger readers won't feel overwhelmed by the atmosphere or the depth at the beginning. However, by the end, there may just be another fantasy lover in the world!

If you're expecting a hero as complex as Drizzt, then you're in for a surprise! Gary Ledger, the "Spearwielder," is an unintentional hero who is taken to the land of Faerie from a "gate" outside his home. There, he learns about his role in the world and learns about himself all while "saving the world!" His development is not nearly as deep as Drizzt but then again, he spends most of the books in a land he is unfamiliar with and has little time to develop his past, his full value structure, nor his plans for the future. But, throughout the story, there is enough development for any avid reader to not be asking themselves "why?" certain things are done by the character; a welcome departure from the Drizzt series, I must say.

There is light humor throughout and it isn't distracting in the least as it comes at points in the story when there needs to be a bit of humor. Like Salvatore's Drizzt series, the book is not a laugh a minute by any means but it will keep you in good spirits and repeating the phrase "heeland coos" for a while!

One small note of caution on language: There is a single word that some parents of younger children may not want them reading. It begins with an "S" and is only said twice if memory serves. Other than that, there are a few points that the characters start to curse but are stopped by various means (nothing overly vulgar). If any of these things bother you, you may want to preview the book for your children. But let me say that the context of these are all in a humorous fashion and do not detract in the least from the overall story and any child age 12 and up should have no problems reading this. And almost every "PG" movie has worse language and situations than Spearwielder!

Overall, this is a great read. The Trilogy books each end at a great point but you will always want to keep reading so the "easy pace" you impose on yourself may not be able to be kept! A book per day is the pace I read it at and I could see having read it much faster if I'd had the time. Light? Yes. Worth the read? Very much so!

Epic trilogy
By Jerry
I love R.A. I love Drizt. But, I get sort of bored when it's the same old song and dance for 15 books in a row. This trilogy is one of the better ones from Salvatore that actually ENDS!

Without giving too much away, the main character is thrown from the "real world" into the fantasy land. Some of the characters he meets are very cliche, like the leprachan named Mickey and, yes, he has an Irish accent. But this includes a lot of R.A.'s signature pieces: great fight scenes, situations where the good guy doesn't always win, some underlying lessons about good vs. evil, prejudice, love, revenge. All that good stuff.

The only R.A. trilogy that tops this one is the Crimson Shadow. But, if you can pick this one up for a fair price, I'm sure you'll enjoy it if you like other Salvatore stuff.

A Lovable, Taking-No-Chances Book
By Carsten
The series starts off weakly. I found Gary Leger, the protagonist, to have a funny first name, with a last name that is hard to pronounce. I was unimpressed with how much R.A.Salvatore used other authors' fantasy in his book. Last but not least, I despised Gary's job and the setting. Then, it grew on me and began to make sense.
I did not realize it at first, but The Hobbit would play a large role in the story; The Hobbit occurs in the same world as the one Gary Leger goes to. I began to realize that the setting was so unlikable because R.A. Salvatore wanted to show how boring the real world is. I found myself begging Gary to stay in Fairie (and sighing in relief to find out Diane, Gary's girlfriend, would not be coming on the trip, just to find out later that she would on the next). The characters became lovable, as I quickly found out; whether it was Tommy or Gerbil, the characters were always believable. The world of Fairie is nice, with interesting locations, names, and a map in the beginning. The Woods Out Back was the best in the series for me because it was the most memorable, then came The Dragon's Dagger because it had tons of cool stuff in it, and finally The Dragonslayer's Return coming in last because it had the best ending, but not the best beginning or middle. All of them had small pinches of creativity, whether it was the Gnome M&M or quadricycle, the talking spear of Cedric Donigarten, or Mickey McMickey's illusions. The last book had some very good surprises in it, with the end being, for the most part, awesome.
I will rank the books, including what they did the best:
The Woods Out Back: High-quality, easy-to-follow, interesting fights
The Dragon's Dagger: Most fascinating and creative, best villain
The Dragonslayer's Return: Best ending, most surprising
This book is very enjoyable, a book that will take a couple of days to read. It will alter your view of the modern world and introduce some cool concepts, while sticking very closely to The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings' plots and fantasy. It may not be the best fantasy, but it is definitely worth buying.

From Publishers Weekly
Still reeling from the deaths of her fairy cousin, Claudine, and many others in 2009's Dead and Gone, Sookie Stackhouse struggles with paranormal politics in her entertaining if slow-moving 10th outing. When Claudine's triplet, Claude, appears at her doorstep, Sookie reluctantly allows him to move in. The government threatens two-natures with mandatory registration, and tensions run high in the local Were pack. Then Eric's maker, a Roman named Appius Livius Ocella, arrives without warning, bringing along Alexei Romanov, whom he rescued from the Bolsheviks and turned into a vampire. Though the action often builds too slowly, the exploration of family in its many human and undead variations is intriguing, and Harris delivers her usual mix of eccentric characters and engaging subplots. Mixed Feelings
By The Knit Wit Teacher
Was DITF a good read? Yes. Is it my favorite book of the series? No.

I think after reading Dead and Gone I expected a lot more to come out of DITF. I thought that I would see more of Bill and Sookie working on their relationship. Be that as friends or more. I expected a great deal about Sookie and Eric. I thought that Alcide would play more of a role especially after Tray. I even thought Quinn might show back up. While we got some answers about Eric and Sookie several more were brought to the surface. Bill and Alcide were just glazed over essentially and Quinn was never mentioned. This booked seemed unfinished almost as if it were a stepping stone to the next book.

Several plot lines were introduced bought not resolved. This book could have been magnificent but it wasn't.

The problem I have with this book is that I can't sit here and tell you what BIG thing happened. Several little things were brought about, but no big climax. The story flowed nicely but if felt like it was just a normal Sookie day sitting out in the sun waiting for something bad to happen. While I appreciate that Sookie needs time to recover the story lacked momentum.

As a reader I feel that I've waited a year and I didn't get the fix I needed. It's almost as if my book was missing 200 or so pages. The story I received was nice but I keep looking for the next part.

Excellent Addition
By Penny
Make no mistake -- this is not a perfect book, but as it gets much more right than wrong and is much more in keeping with the earlier Sookie novels in tone, I give it the full 5 stars. There are spoilers herein, so beware!

What it gets right: Eric, Sookie gets her moxie back (mostly), Eric gets even more complex character development, the progression in Eric and Sookie's ability to express their love for each other, Bill getting his own Happily Ever After in such an unpredictable but welcome way to tie up his storyline, the return of some of the humor that endeared the early books to so many fans, the deepening friendship between Pam and Sookie, Jason maturing and acting the part of big brother for once, Claude's protectiveness of Sookie, and the more leisurely pacing overall.

I have long been a fan of Eric/Sookie, and I was definitely pleased with how things progress between them in this book. The mutual admissions of love were lovely (from Eric: "When my eyes open, I think of you, of every part of you" and "If this is not true love, it's as close as anyone gets"). It seems that Sookie is less and less concerned about the blood bond and is now acknowledging to herself and Eric that her feelings are as genuine as his. They laugh, banter, flirt, argue (and make up!), support each other, share emotions and secrets, express their love and protect each other fiercely.

I must say that I was surprised in reading the more negative reviews to see how many were penned by professed Eric/Sookie fans, who were lamenting the lack of sizzle and romantic tension. It seems to me that there is still sizzle between them, but the sexual tension is naturally tamped down to some extent now that the chase is over and they have settled into a relationship. I think Ms. Harris is attempting to show us what Eric and Sookie would be like as a couple leading their day-to-day lives, if they stay together. This is something many fans have long wanted, and I want to go on record as saying "Bravo!"

I absolutely loved the way that Ms. Harris gave Bill his own happiness -- it was such a unique and unpredictable plot twist (in my eyes anyway). Pam, as always, is hysterical with her dry humor and her sly teasing of Eric and Sookie.

It was a very welcome change for Sookie, albeit changed in some fundamental ways over the course of the series, to be more herself in this book. The characterization seemed so off in the previous novel, and I was glad to see it all back on-course with this one. One of the funnier moments was when Pam, looking disgusted at needing to relay this information on, tells Sookie that Eric says he is proud of her (for her part in a fight she and Pam end up in). I also welcomed Sookie starting to ask herself some hard questions about what she truly wants from life and what being a human or turned into a vampire might mean for her. We fans know that Ms. Harris has promised that Sookie will never be a vampire, but Sookie doesn't know this of course. So, it was good to finally see her debating the questions of aging vs. immortality (although with all these vampires dying a final death in Harris' novels, immortality is looking like it's not all it's cracked up to be!), having children and the fact that most vampires she knows were turned in the prime of their life.

Now, what did it get wrong? Well, I do agree with the reviewers who think the book suffered from lack of a cohesive driving plot line. It did feel more episodic than the other novels, but again, I thought the previous novel had far too many plot lines going on. The pacing was good for this one, but it lacked momentum and/or a central organizing plot. Ms. Harris did say that it wasn't until she finished the book that she identified the one unifying thread was the subject of family bonds.

Despite the news that Ms. Harris has at least two continuity editors reading the drafts (not to mention the publisher's paid editing staff), there are still lots of consistency errors and glitches. They were not as distracting in this novel, admittedly, but I do wonder why this many pairs of eyes are not catching some of these problems at the outset.

My biggest substantive complaint centers around the planned side-trip to Sam's brother's wedding. I wish Sookie would just tell Sam what she was thinking: that when she agreed to go, she and Eric were not in a solid relationship but now they are. But, as it seems this is the point of a novella coming out this winter, it looks like it is going to happen. So now I just have to assume that Eric was somehow persuaded to be in favor of this trip to family wedding with Sam. I'll be anxious to see how that all plays out.

Finally, I think many reviewers may not be aware that Harris was attempting to answer some fan questions from her site's boards and from signings in the early sections of this book. To those who weren't aware of what she was doing, it's easy to see how they might be confused by the "checklist" tone and by some of the information included as an aside here and there.

If Ms. Harris were reading this, I would say thank you for such a great novel, I thoroughly enjoyed the read! I also would suggest that she tell her publisher that she won't write to a deadline any longer. I think that the strain of putting out one Sookie book every May, in addition to her other writing and commitments like touring and conventions, is showing. Speaking as a huge fan of her work, I would much prefer to wait longer for the next books and have them be stronger works for having the extra time.

All in the "family"
By E. A Solinas
"Dead in the Family" has a very appropriate title -- all sorts of family members pop up, and not just for Sookie. Charlaine Harris still can whips up a pleasant warm Southern vibe for her not-so-urban fantasies, but unfortunately this latest novel isn't quite up to her usual standards: it's basically a mass of fluffy in-between storylines that rarely go anywhere.

Just after Amelia leaves for New Orleans, Sookie's cousin Claude appears at her home and asks to move in with her, since he's a lone fairy who needs the presence of another. Bill is suffering from silver poisoning AND depression, and Sookie has to find a "relative" who can help him. And Eric has some family issues as well -- his maker Appius Livius Ocella shows up on Sookie's doorstep, along with his "son"/lover Alexei.

To make matters worse, unidentified fairies and weres have been crossing Sookie's land,, and it also turns out that there's a dead body buried back there. And it's not Debbie Pelt's. Now Sookie must unravel the secrets plaguing the supernaturals around her, or there might be even more deaths.

"Dead in the Family" feels like Charlaine Harris wrote half-a-dozen short stories, ripped them apart at the seams, and then sewed them back together. There's no central plot to this book, just a mass of fluffy subplots woven loosely around each other. And some of the stories don't really have much point to them, so the book feels cluttered and fragmented.

The saving grace is that some of those subplots ARE interesting, mainly the ones that develop the characters -- the whole subplot involving Bill and the elderly Caroline Bellefleur is quite sweet and touching, and it should be interesting to see where Harris takes the religious/political pressure on the weres. And the typically bloody climax is a pretty shocking, gruesome one, if a bit slapdash.

But Sookie's characterization is very shaky in this book -- Harris zooms through her entire recovery from being TORTURED in ONE CHAPTER (ARG! Cop-out!), and initially she seems so aggressive that it feels like she's channeling Anita Blake. Fortunately she gets steadier and sunnier after the first few chapters, and it's intriguing to see her various family members interacting with her -- fae, were and telepathic human.

And there's some much-needed development given to the sexy, devil-may-care Claude (it's very cute when he's goofing around on the playground with Hunter), as well as new insights into Bill and Eric's lives and families (both living and undead).

"Dead in the Family" is all about the family ties, but it feels like Charlaine Harris just whipped together a bunch of short story ideas rather than writing a cohesive plot. Better luck next time.
