From Publishers Weekly
In his eighth fantasy novel, the author of Moonheart and Yarrow turns the stories of "Jack the Giant Killer" and "Jack and the Bean Stalk" into a contemporary tale set in Ottawa. Jacky Rowan's boyfriend of three months has just dumped her because she has begun to bore him. Feeling empty, confused and rejected, Jacky meets Dunrobin Finn, a gnome who introduces her to a parallel reality, Faerie, which she can see and enter into by wearing a magic red cap. Having recently witnessed the murder of a gnome by evil bikers, Jacky's meeting with Finn inspires her with the renewed vitality to embark upon a quest to save the daughter of a Laird of Kinrowan, who is being held in a Giant's Keep. Jacky's best friend, Kate Hazel, agrees (at first skeptically) to help her. The pair flee and tackle all manner of bikers and "bogans" (evil entities that look like winos in non-Faerie reality), and Jacky finds a replacement for her wayward love in Eilian, the hunkish son of a Laird of Dunlogan. Unfortunately, de Lint gives more weight to fantasy arcana than to more accessible universals, undercutting the potential "cross-over" appeal of this otherwise readable tale.

AMAZON STOP MIXING REVIEWS FOR DIFFERENT FILMS AND EDITIONS!
By DR SHOCK
I'm reviewing this film because the only review here is for a entirely different film 'The Giant Killer' asylum films!

Jack The Giant Killer is a pretty neat little fairy tale that was released in 1962. Trying to capture the magic of the 1958 Harryhausen classic 'The 7th Voyage of Sinbad', Jack the Giant Killer is inferior in every way, but still most enjoyable to the child in all stop motion fans.

I owned two pervious editions of this film but I had heard rumors that this version released was the horrid version that was dubbed into a ersatz musical! I only wanted that version to have a laugh from time to time.

Unfortunately, it is not the case and even worse it is by far the worst looking of the three releases of the film. If you must own the film look for the good times version released in 1:33 as it is the closest to the proper aspect ratio, even though all releases have some cropping issues.

I saw Jack the Giant Killer in a theater as a child and I must say it haunted my memory for decades before I was able to see it again. The strange thing is the second time I saw the film it was at least 20 years after the theater viewing. It was playing on TV and it was the bizarre musical version?!! (which I knew nothing about at the time!)I was completely disappointed because the musical version is absolutely horrible.

It took me a number of years before I would see the original theatrical version and it was every bit as good as I remembered..ok maybe the stop motion looked better to me as a kid, but the film held up fairly well. The giants are obviously inspired by Ray Harryhausen's wonderful Cyclops from 7th Voyage, but all in all, it's a pretty good film for fantasy film fans from days gone by. It's pretty hard not to like a two headed giant! If you like Harryhausen films, you'll find this interesting.

Jack the Giant Killer DVD
By A Customer
A budget DVD released on Goodtimes homevideo (It used to be released on MGM). Picture quality of 'Jack the Giant Killer' is much better than the Vhs version (obviously) and about the same (if not better) than the Laser Disc release. This single layer disc runs 1 hour 36 minutes and is playable worldwide (NTSC). The movie stars Kerwin Williams & the beautiful Judi Meredith and directed by Nathan Juran. There are no special features on this DVD except for scene index and play. The DVD is worth it even at this price. This is not the musical version but the regular movie version, The disc is made in Hong Kong (and/or Taiwan) as mentioned on the back of the DVD keepcase, but then again most budget DVDs are made there nowadays. The picture and sound quality is very good (Its the best I've seen of this video so far) and would get this classic before its too late.

"7th Voyage of Jack" entertainment worth the price!!
By E K Maxmias
ASIN# B000050SKH
I gave this film 3 stars based on "the Film" because...
-It was such a blatant band-wagon move after "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad". It's hard to watch without noticing parodies.
-The giants inexplicably all have goat's legs, just like the cyclops in SVOS!!
-Same director and lead actors as SVOS... in the SAME ROLES!!!
-Some scenes drag on, even action scenes! "let's show more monsters LONGER!!!" The witch scene on the ship NEVER ENDS!!
-A little magical helper, just like SVOS. He even makes the same bargain for his freedom!!
-Battle between giant and serpent, just like SVOS battle between Cycplops and Dragon.
-Editing is silly at times. Senes were obviously cut (gaunlet hall has arms cut off and blades broken but not a clue how it happened!) while others go on... and on... and on.....
-Acting is valiant considering the script!! This thing was obviously thrown together. I particularly enjoyed the high-school acting of Judy Meredith. Kind of like watching a car wreck... you just can't look away.
-The monsters are extremely crude in every aspect, from sculpting to animation. The funny thing is, the animation seams to get a little better as the film rolls along, like they created the sequences in script order.
-Jim Danforth (though I never see his name on the Credits?) needed to understudy under Harryhausen a bit longer. He had very little knowledge of human or animal physiology. This made his creatures look cartoonish and less believable. Do you like shiney monsters? To his credit, they definately have character.
-Despite all of this, it is a fun film. Just need to get over the SVOS "cloning".
As a value priced DVD, I'd have to give it 5 stars. Here's why;
-Picture quality is better than could ever be expected for this obscure film (at this price). Someone in Hong Kong must of had this on ice!!
-Ditto for sound quality. As good as could be expected for a featureless DVD.
-Packaging is better than adequate. They actually Screened a nice image on the disk!
-NOT THE MUSICAL!!!
Given all of this, I'd still recommend this DVD for Harryhausen Fans. It really puts his skills in perspective. It is also a whimsical and enjoyable movie in it's own right. I just could not get over the "Sinbad" thing!!

The Weird of the White Wolf (Elric Saga), by Michael Moorcock

"We must be bound to one another then. Bound by hell-forged chains and fate-haunted circumstance. Well, then - let it be thus so - and men will have cause to tremble and flee when they hear the names of Elric of Melnibone and Stormbringer, his sword. We are two of a kind - produced by an age which has deserted us. Let us give this age cause to hate us." Imrryr, the dreaming city; Yyrkoon, the hated usurper; Cymoril, the beloved... all had fallen to the fury and unearthly power of the albino prince and his terrible sword. An Elric faced at last the fate that was to be his in this haunted era - that he must go forth, sword and man as one, and havoc and horror would be forever at his forefront until he found his Purpose that was yet obscured to him.

In response to the "Spotlight Reviews"
By amster
In defense of one of the greatest and most original sagas in the annals of heroic fantasy, I would like to address some of the negative comments (and misconceptions) of the Spotlight Reviews.

First and foremost, the Elric Saga is a tragedy. None of the stories have a particularly happy ending, and the final book, "Stormbringer", ends along the same lines; sad, but dramatically fulfilling. One should consider that when Moorcock first started writing these, tragedy was virtually unheard of in Sword and Sorcery Fiction. This is not Tolkien. The hero does not get the girl and ride off into the sunset. If that's what you're looking for, you should avoid Moorcock and seek satisfaction elsewhere.

Secondly, the story that everyone has the most problem with, "The Dreaming City", is actually the FIRST Elric story that Moorcock ever wrote. He did not write these chronologically. As it stands, "The Dreaming City" is the most pivotal, and arguably, the most important story in the entire Elric Saga. It's the story that defines the character and his subsequent actions throughout the rest of the series. One person noted that Elric's actions (in leaving S. Baldhead to die in order to save himself) was uncharacteristic. Well, its supposed to be uncharacteristic, BECAUSE THE CHARACTER UNDERGOES A PROFOUND CHANGE IN THIS STORY. The character of Elric at the end of "The Dreaming City" is not the same character at the beginning of the saga. In the first two novels, he is idealistic as well as naive (especially in trusting Yrkoon a second time). But after his actions bring ruin to everyone he cares about, he becomes embittered and vengeful, all the way up until midway through "The Bane of the Black Sword", where the character changes once again. As for the complaints that some of his actions are inexplicable and inconsistent, I must remind the readers that Elric is a drug addict. His sword, Stormbringer, is his addiction. Anyone who has ever dealt with addiction in the real world, either directly or as an observer, can tell you that an addict's actions are often illogical and inconsistent.

The idea that Elric never really cared about Cymoril is ludacrous. Anyone who gained that from reading the stories must not have been paying very close attention. While I don't like to give away spoilers (unlike some people, who are content to ruin it for everyone just because they personally didn't like it), I will say that the tragic events of "The Dreaming City" haunt Elric throughout the rest of the saga.

In closing, I would suggest not to prejudge the series based on this one book. Reserve your judgement until you've completed the entire saga.

Five stars. Highly recommended.

3 of 6: Back to Melnibone
By Robert Beveridge
Michael Moorcock, The Weird of the White Wolf (DAW, 1977)
The third book in the Elric series introduces the reader to Moonglum, Elric's longtime companion (and, thanks to AD&D's Deities and Demigods book, the companion most readers can't imagine him without). Much of the second novel moved away from the events of the first, and concentrated Elric's character on other adventures. The Weird of the White Wolf brings Elric back to Melnibonë along with Moonglum, their friend Smiorgan Baldhead, and an army of raiders bent on overthrowing Yyrkoon, who stole the throne when Elric left Melnibonë for a year to travel the world. For those wondering, whether you've read the book or not: the "weird" of the title is an archaic definition of the term, given by Merriam Webster as "One's assigned lot or fortune, especially when evil." And when he finds it, he's not all that happy about it. But that's to be expected when one's antihero has a crisis of conscience, I guess.
Certainly not a slow book by any means, nor a weak one in the context of the series. And it's definitely a necessity as a prelude to what comes after it. But I still felt there was something missing here; some pieces of description left out, a few places where things could have been filled in better. All of the Elric novels are short, to say the least (Stormbringer, the last and longest of them, clocks in a 217pp.), and feel as if they could use some fleshing out; this one, however, gives that feeling the most. One wonders if the brevity of them was not the insistence of the publisher, and what Moorcock would do with them, given the opportunity (a la King's unexpurgated edition of The Stand). Loads of fun, and highly recommended for fantasy and non-fantasy readers alike, as is the whole series. ****

review of Weird of the White Wolf by Michael Moorcock
By A Customer
I must say that Elric of Melnibone is one of the most tiresome heroes or even antiheroes I have ever come across...his self-pity, fatalism and incessant whining and angst are easy to identify with, but can also be quite heavy-going...this is not to say that this book is bad, it is exceedingly well written, and Elric is an interesting character, i like the emphasis on his demon origins and natural ancestral cruelty especially...I liked this book better than the Sailor on the Seas of Fate, though both that one and Weird of the White Wolf are a bit disjointed since it was originally a number of stories written by Michael Moorcock for fantasy magazines. I think i liked the first book the best, because I loved the vivid portrait he painted of the ancient, decadent Island of Melnibone, with their pre-human inhabitants and elaborate, cruel pleasures...they were evil all right, and you knew they were doomed as a race, but they certainly had style. I was very disappointed that Imrhyrr fell in the Weird of the White Wolf...I felt a great civilisation and era were gone forever. The humans just dont seem as interesting...too clumsy. As for Elric, I believe the tragedy of him is that he is the main source of his misery and undoing...Watching him go down is almost painfully annoying...you want to shout at him or something to stop being such a fool. Its also is a bit boring and monotonous hearing his constant whining, but it somehow makes it even more tragic. He knows he's doomed and yet he doesnt quite have the courage to commit suicide and end it all. His indecision defeats him. He's sort of like Hamlet that way. All in all its a great read...Michael Moorcock is a fantastic writer. I sometimes read him just for the great descriptions

Good for beginers
By M.N.Ramesh
Being a faculty for Masters in Food Technology under university of Mysore India, and also a practising R & D Scientist realted to Food Engineering, I find this book most practicle in approach. In perticular for graduates seeking scientific approach to their experiments this book is really very informative. The imporatnt thing that I felt good in this book is the methodical approach organised with an objective of the experiment and the data table that needs to be filled for a paerticular experiment.
In total it is worth posseing this book for any person (student or an Engineer) who is interested in conducting Food Engineering experiments.

From Publishers Weekly
Lady Damnation, Old Father Time, a world weary Count Dracula and the hard-drinking storybook character Bruin Bear are only a few of the beings that Green produces for his seventh novel set in the sinister and psychedelic world of Nightside. None, however, are more powerful than "the Griffin," an immortal who built his empire on the carcasses of foes, who has now summoned paranormal PI John Taylor to find his granddaughter. Taylor specializes in locating lost things; his Sight—which allows him to see into other dimensions—should be ideal for the task. But when an entity in the Griffin's mansion blocks his abilities, Taylor must investigate the old-fashioned way: questioning the Griffin's family members one by one. Taylor's q&a sessions are less than thrilling, and the numerous references to the family's fearsome reputation grow tiresome. Fortunately, Green throws in a number of left-field surprises, spicing things up with an attack of fanatical nuns (called the Salvation Army Sisterhood), a bloodthirsty gangster and a DNA-stealing Charnel Chimera. Indeed, the most entertaining aspect lies not in Taylor's investigation but in anticipating what Green's twisted imagination will conjure next. (Jan.)

Not as good as some others in the series, but still enjoyable
By D. Baer
They can't all be five stars. This is book 7 in a series that I have been reading since book 1. When you have been with the author and characters this long, it can be difficult to keep things fresh and engaging. So, this one was a little less interesting than the previous books. I am hoping it sets the stage for something more.

Set in the aftermath of the Lilith War that ripped through the Nightside, maybe we were up for something a little more low-key. This book has a twist in that John must find someone, but is unable to do it the quick way he usually does. Instead, he has to hit the streets, as it were, to question witnesses and track down leads. This immediately sets the stage for a really powerful adversary. Maybe that is why this one seemed a little slower and less full of the action I expected. I guess it was just more "normal" and less John Taylor.

Along the way, there are some favorite (Dead Boy) and some new characters who show up, and we are exposed to some new locations within the Nightside. Green's humor helps hold our attention during the lulls between action. The storybook characters Bruin Bear and his companion the Sea Goat (who, incidentally, loves his booze) are good for comic relief.

One of the Best UF series (in my POV!)
By Aussie
Oh my gosh, what an awesome read! It looks like I may have read this some time ago and forgotten *sheepish grin*. Ah well, nothing lost in having another read. Truly, this is an awesome series, I am SO loving it. The characters are amazing, and even better, no one is safe *heh heh* except, of course, for the main players - John Taylor, Walker (is it bad that I find him a little sexy?!), Shotgun Suzie, Dead Boy (yeah, I oddly find him sexy and all, even though he seems to be held together with duct tape and staples...man, I am sick...) If you want a read that is unique, this is for you!

Awesome John Taylor again. yah gotta love him and his quirky friends, Dead Boy and Shotgun Suzie.

John gets the JOB Done in a odd and bizarre way sometimes.

This book leads into more adventures and a power vacancy from the last books.

Definitely Read "Plague Year" First
By Joseph Jordan
The hell Mr. Carlson drags you through in "Plague War" begins in the first book, "Plague Year", and you really need the first installment to understand most of the character motives and to see the explanation for how the world gets so screwed up in the first place.

Be warned, this book is not a feel-good story. I've never seen an author put such good people through such tradgedy, with each page getting worse and worse for them. Mr. Carlson is like Steven King on some terribly soured steroids. There is a slight upturn towards the end of "Plague War", but I suspect that is merely so he can push his characters off a higher cliff and into an even lower abyss in the next book, due out next year.

An excellent sequel to Carlson's previous work!
By Cynical Dude
A fan of "Plague Year," I picked up "Plague War" last week- after a long anticipation- just before flying cross county... and I was not disappointed. It was the perfect way to escape the otherwise hectic runaround of balancing a fussy seven-month old baby girl, an inability to clear my ears, and the jerk in front of my jamming their seat as far back as possible.

I was enraptured to find out more about what has become of the world after a year suffering under a machine plague that attacks and kills any living creatures of sufficient size. It's clear Mr. Carlson did his homework on a wide variety of issues- the impact such a plague would have on the environment (such as the prevalence of insects, and how vicious they would have become- something I would never have conceived of prior), the effects of the human body above 10,000 feet, the mechanics of nanotechnology, how the rest of the world reacted to the impending doom of the machine plague.

I was vaguely disappointed in not finding out as much about other issues I considered, like what happened to the US Navy- I imagine the Fleet would have sortied, for instance, and they could have supplied themselves well enough to last a year at sea. Major US warships have excellent Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical protection, and could've sealed themselves airtight and modified the pressure inside the ships if necessary (the machine plague self destructs at atmospheric pressures above approximately 10,000 feet)- not to mention submarines. It would have played an interesting role in the war described in the book.

All that could've taken another three hundred pages to go over, though. Heh. All in all, an excellent summer read. Pick it up, you won't be disappointed!

A Chilling Post-Apocalyptic Nightmare!
By ocmd
Plague War, a mix of sci-fi, military adventure and political intrigue, is the second book in Jeff Carlson's post apocalyptic trilogy. The nightmarish landscape presents a chilling albeit believable picture of a world devastated by a nanotech plague. The book works as a standalone but to get the complete story of how our world got so screwed up you might want to start with Plague Year.
Nanotechnology designed to fight cancer is accidentally released and has killed most of the world's population. The nano-plague, something like a flesh eating virus, freezes at elevations above 10,000 feet so the surviving population flees to the mountains.

Dr. Ruth Goldman, a researcher, has produced a vaccine that will inoculate the survivors against the plague but the government won't release it because it doesn't benefit their own agenda. The U.S. government wants to use the vaccine as a tool to decide who will live. So Ruth is on the run, searching for survivors and hoping to inoculate as many as possible. Traveling with her is Cameron Najarro, a survivor from Sierra Nevada. But the government has their own plans for the vaccine and they'll stop at nothing to get to Ruth. Not surprisingly there is also a group of rebels who are interested in finding Ruth. But another catastrophic event is coming; one that may cause a war that will change things forever.

This riveting and original tale paints a bleak picture of technology gone awry. There's plenty of action but this is essentially a character driven survival story. Carlson depicts the desperation of his heroes with great clarity. And the sexual tension between Ruth and Cam only adds to their despair. It's terrifyingly real and comes to a conclusion you won't see coming. A third book, Mind Plague, is out this month.

In the nestled playgrounds of the Upper West Side, Simon harbors a simmering rage at his boss's betrayal.

Things take a turn when he meets a tight-knit trio of dads at the playground. They are different from other men Simon has met, stronger and more confident, more at ease with the darker side of life- and soon Simon is lured into their mix. But after a guys' night out gets frighteningly out of hand, Simon feels himself sliding into a new nightmarish reality.

As he experiences disturbing changes in his body and his perceptions, he starts to suspect that when the guys welcomed him to their "pack," they were talking about much more than male bonding. And as he falls prey to his basest instincts, Simon must accept that werewolves exist if he is to turn the tides of his fortune...

Stunningly Innovative Yet Equally Predictable
By TMStyles
"The Pack" by Jason Starr is another of the recent efforts to revive the werewolf mythos and it succeeds admirably on several levels. Starr injects some imaginative ideas on werewolves and their human interactions while at the same time being unable to avoid some of the more predictable and traditional elements such as the futility and inability of believers to convince anyone else of the condition and the inevitability of human baser needs and desires overpowering the sense of right and wrong.

Starr has written a multi-layered novel that deals, at times with surprising humor, with many of man's foibles including failing marriages, obliviousness at mundane jobs leading to unexpected termination, and the making of plans for life that never quite seem to work out. Starr's readers are given the opportunity to question the real and the perceived aspects of character strength, personal commitment to right and wrong, and what constitutes the bonds and bounds of friendship and love.

Simon Burns is suffering through burnout in his job and marriage but does not recognize it. After being summarily fired by his boss, the rage-filled Simon becomes a reluctant stay-at-home dad caring for his 3 year old son, Jeremy, while his neglected wife, Alison, seems to drift further away. Only when he meets three other dads in similar situations and begins bonding with them does he begin experiencing a sense of belonging and meaning in his suddenly rudderless life. He feels stronger as a member of this new "pack" until he awakens from a beer-fueled blackout to find himself lost and naked far from home with no memories of how he got there. When Simon subsequently discovers his former boss was mauled to death by a wolf not far from where he awakened, and starts to experience enhanced sensory acuity and sexual prowess, he begins to suspect an evil only heretofore imagined.

"The Pack" works on several levels including just as a nail-biting paranormal thriller. But I was equally intrigued by the subtext of paranoia that can so easily develop when a wife imagines her husband is having an affair and everything she examines incorrectly points to false conclusions. Equally the paranoia that grows into mental certainty that someone has done something that is anathema to them and that they maybe didn't really do in the first place. Both these subtexts are significant undercurrents in this novel and both can exhaust the reader as evidence can be read to prove whatever the observer chooses to believe.

There are a few sections of the book that come across as unnecessarily contrived and parts where we scream at the cluelessness of the protagonist. The ending is somewhat abrupt and stretches credulity but all appears part of a bigger plan as Starr is reported to be working on a sequel. I recommend this effort to fans of the paranormal as well as to anyone enjoying a thriller that reimagines the possibility of werewolves in New York City.

There's a good and a bad side to everything and this novel takes the reader into a howling adventure!
By P.S. Winn
This was a good read, not for young readers, but good for all others. When Simon gets fired from his job and becomes a stay at home dad, it is a bit strange for him. Things get a whole lot stranger when he meets some other dads at the park and his life becomes something from a nightmare. Their are some good side effects being in 'the pack' but they are definitely nothing compared to the horrific side effects that Simon finds himself dealing with. The author has a great writing style and I think he may have some other books I will enjoy.

Great Big OK
By K. Rogers
This novel had some exciting parts, but, overall, it earned a great big OK from me. The positives: the author has a great sense of dialogue--nothing seemed forced or strange. I also thought Starr did an excellent job of describing the thoughts of his main character--he seemed like a "real person" to me. His descriptions of a new stay-at-home-dad's trials and tribulations really rang true. The negatives: Maybe I am too old (54) to buy that a bunch of metrosexual guys become raging beasts, but this little Beasts in the City men's group didn't work for me. I also thought Starr dropped the descriptive ball. I kept having to look back through the story to see if I had missed something. Maybe the old werewolf legend is too firmly ingrained for this new take to be plausible for me. I always second guess myself when I read the glowing reviews of others, but the werewolf element in this story was neither believable nor scary.

There has never been a Redwall hero quite like Rakkety Tam, the roguish Highlander squirrel who sets off for Mossflower Wood on a mercenary errand and loses his heart to the charms of Redwall Abbey. And there's never been a villain quite like Gulo the Savage: a vicious beast-eating wolverine who descends upon the Abbey in Search of a relic called the Walking Stone. As fans of Brian Jacques and the bestselling Redwall series know, the adventures just keep getting bigger and better.

Grade 5-9–Jacques once again delivers a heroic tale of friendship, valor, and a battle between good and evil. Gulo the Savage and his army of vermin invade Mossflower Country to murder his brother and capture the coveted Walking Stone. Rakkety Tam MacBurl, a highland warrior, and his companion Wild Doogy Plumm, join forces with the hares of the Long Patrol Regiment and the occupants and friends of Redwall Abbey to defeat the villains. Numerous battles occur across Mossflower Country and eventually end at the doorstep of Redwall Abbey. This fast-paced adventure will keep readers on their toes until the final battle. Elliot's ink sketches appear at the head of each chapter, giving readers a glimpse of what is to come. Some characters' accents may pose a slight challenge for those not familiar with the previous books. The colorful writing style, the strong cast of characters, and twisting plot will continue to delight fans of the series.–Christine McGinty, Albany Public Library, NY

Gr. 5-8. In this seventeenth Redwall title, Mossflower Country and the peaceful inhabitants of Redwall Abbey are under threat from Gulo the Savage, a flesh-eating wolverine who murdered his father and now seeks to kill his brother and recapture the Walking Stone. Two warrior squirrels, Rakkety Tam McBurl and his friend Wild Doogy Plumm, set out with the hares from the Long Patrol to battle Gulo and protect the abbey residents. Jacques' tale of war and courage includes a cast of thousands that battle fiercely and relish their comradeship, most often through banquet and song. Several intriguing characters stand out, including Yoofuss the vole, a compulsive thief who steals every trinket he comes in contact with; Sister Armel, a Redwall squirrel maid whose dreams help foretell the story's outcome; and a turtle called Rockbottom. The complex plot and frequent use of Scottish dialect may try a casual reader's patience, but Redwall fans won't be deterred. Kay Weisman

Much more of the same, please!
By P. Brodersen
I will shock many reviewers and readers of these books to state that I am over 50, and still enjoying the stories as much as ever. I am confused by several of the reviewers who find this "much the same" - of course. What would one expect to find in a "Redwall" series book than resourceful, brave, small peace-loving critters facing immense odds of evil beasts? This is exactly why one reads the Redwall books - to discover again how the master tale-teller Jacques has woven new characters around the perennial themes of good and evil, friendship and loyalty vs fear and slavery. While true none of the main characters is a casualty in this story, many good creatures die in the course of the tale, and we see several give their lives for their friends - the colonel and the corporal, in different battles.

I started reading Redwall to my children 12 years ago, and have continued to collect all of the books by Brian Jacques, enjoying them mostly myself, although a strong advocate when asked for a reference. I would highly recommend them to "kids" of all ages - only cautioning that the language will stretch younger vocabularies (especially in the earlier books), and that these are not "gentle" books where no one dies. Rose and many others do not survive, and the realism presented in the stories adds greatly to the impact of the books.

If one wants to read about other characters and stories, there are many out there. If you want strong characters, challenging reading, themes of bravery and self-sacrifice, and descriptions of feasting that makes me hungry to write about, these are the best around. Enjoy!

Exciting New "Tail" from Jaques
By Mariel
I have been a Brian Jauqes devotee since I picked "Redwall" in fifth grade. Now,as a 21-year old college student, I still get excited when a new book in the series comes out.

I agree that the last few books plots' have been formulaic, but "Rakkety Tam" breaks the mold and showcases the wonderful comraderie of Jaques' animal heros and villans in a fresh way. I partciularally enjoyed reading the good-natured banter between the squirrel Northerners Rakkety Tam and Doogy Plumm. They are interseting charcters and Jaques captures their accents down to a tee!

"Rakkety Tam" features more violent battles than in previous books, but they mirror the more violent battles going on in the world today.

All in all, this book was a wonderful! I recomend it to anyone who is looking for a story to chuckle and and cheer over, no matter if they need a "silent reading" text for grade-school or are seeking a study-break from Mid-terms!

I'll never get sick of Redwall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By A Customer
Have you ever read a book that you never want to finish? Well, I have. Brian Jacques masterpiece Rakkety Tam captured me with its suspense, adventure, and captivating description. Gulo the Savage wants to take over The Northern Sea, but first he has to find the Walking Stone which his cowardly brother stole. Meanwhile, Rakkety Tam and his companion, Doogy Plumm, are on a mission to find a flag for the squirrel queen. They end up at Redwall. Gulo and his crew hear about Redwall and are after its riches. Will the peaceful Redwall critters, with the help of Salamandastron hares, and Rakkety Tam, and Doogy, keep Redwall and defeat Gulo the Savage? They faced many problems throughout their journey to defeat Gulo. First, Rakkety Tam leads Gulo into the Pines where the blackbirds are. The blackbirds killed or injured many critters on each side. Then they went barreling down a fast-flowing river on a log and turned just before falling off a waterfall. Gulo couldn't stop so he went over with some of his band. Throughout the book Rakkety Tam learned how to be a better warrior, companion, and friend. In my opinion the author's message is that by helping others you'll help yourself, and accomplish many things. So, I rate this five stars because of its suspense, adventure, and amazing description. If you ever read this book you'll agree with me that this book is truly enthralling.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Harris's rousing fifth Sookie Stackhouse fantasy-mystery (after 2004's Dead to the World) pits vampires, were-creatures, shifters and one fairy godmother against a sniper with an apparent aversion to nonhumans. If trying to discover who's behind the shootings isn't enough, the telepathic cocktail waitress from Bon Temps, La., has to cope with a few other distractions: her sexy "Were" friend, Alcide Herveaux, needs her help in his father's bid to become the next leader of the local werewolf pack; her boss, Sam Merlotte (a collie in his spare time), gets shot; her house partly burns down; and what's she to do about the handsome vampire bartender who dresses as a pirate at Sam's place? Between one mishap and another, Sookie is one busy gal. Harris does an admirable job of creating a heroine who's not only interesting but completely believable in a world of the strange and the different. Natural and humorous dialogue and a nicely paced plot that doesn't dwell so much on Sookie's old boyfriends help make this entry the best yet in the series.

From Booklist
Sookie Stackhouse just can't seem to stay away from the supernatural denizens of Bon Temps, Louisiana. In Dead to the World (2004), she found herself embroiled in vampire politics; this time around, she's involved in the machinations of the Were-people, whose pack leader has just passed away. -Alcide Herveaux asks her to accompany him to the funeral, where Alcide's father declares his candidacy against a slimy, calculating rival. Angry at being drawn into the conflict, Sookie can't distance herself entirely, because a sniper has been taking shots at Were-people, and the community suspects Sookie's brother, Jason, a new shape-shifter. Sookie's love life is every bit as complicated as usual, and her collection of would-be beaux continues to grow. Also, someone wants her dead, which she learns when an assailant sets fire to her beloved house. Harris' southern vampire series remains one of the best of the breed, concocted out of just the right mixture of humor, intrigue, and excitement. Its latest entry does not disappoint. A low 4, but keeps the momentum
By Teacher Mom
This book veers a bit from the vampire stories in that it's not so much a story weaved around the vamps, but they're more threaded in to the story. Of course, Eric is intent on discovering what happened in the brief (relatively speaking as his lifetime is measured in centuries) time that he spent at Sookie's home. That's pretty much it in terms of vamp involvement. Frankly, that led to some disappointment. Alcide, however, features prominently in this installment and we learn a lot more about Weres and shifters. It just feels like something's missing from Charlaine Harris' normal style. One thing that I noticed, and is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, is the increasing use of catch-ups. I understand that some people like to just jump into a series without starting with the first novel. The rest of us, however, shouldn't be punished for it and forced to read catch-ups constantly. It's such a digression in momentum and drives me bonkers!

It's still a good read. I wish I had more feelings about Sookie and Alcide so that I could savor some of the scenes between them, but it just didn't seem like he really cares for her, other than wanting to get in her pants. Speaking of which, how many men are hot for Sookie now? It's getting a bit tiresome to hear of yet another admirer hopping on the Sookie fan train. Sookie's love life can only be spread so thinly until it'll shatter. I hope that she finds someone worthwhile soon.

We also learn more about Claudine and her surly twin, Claude. Tragedy, as usual, seems to follow hotly on Sookie's heels. Surprisingly, after the author has spent so much time telling us how isolated Sookie's house is from pretty much everywhere (except Bill, who's handily just across the adjoining cemetery), the volunteer fire department manages to put out a fire in a historic home (aged wood burns quickly, doesn't it?) before any major damage is done to the majority of it, other than the kitchen, happily destroying any evidence from the whole Debbie Pelt slaying. Reality check, please.

One last note on editing... once again, this book seems to be filled with missed errors. I understand that spell check corrects words, but if the wrong word is in the sentence, but it's spelled correctly, it's still an error.

Fairies and Werewolves and Tigers, Oh My
By CJM
If you're an avid reader who likes romances and anything written well, but have never imagined enjoying a "paranormal romance," give this series a shot! You'll be surprised! I was never interested in anything remotely related to fantasy or science fiction or vampires, but accidentally picked a paranormal romance up and was very pleasantly surprised. Talk about happy accidents. The fifth installment in the Sookie Stackhouse series is a compelling read, but my goodness was it sad! Our heroine continues to be brave and resilient, but the novel is full of catastrophes. I don't want to wreck the plot for anyone, but one episode with werewolves really broke my heart. I actually missed the sexy amorality of the vampires--they sometimes lighten things up. We continue to learn more about Sookie's town; the townspeople really come together for her on a couple of occasions. Charlaine Harris' depiction of Sookie's community adds texture and richness to this series. Andy, who is a local law enforcer, is becoming an increasingly complex and morally ambiguous character. It will be fun to see what Harris does with him later in the series. Sookie's encounter with Quinn, with memorably purple-brown eyes, makes me hope we see a lot more of him. Also her future job at a vampire summit is promising for future novels. Here's hoping she can have a little more fun, a little more sex, and a few laughs. Let's bail on the werewolves for a while and have some fun!

Lots of plot and character, Ms. Harris is back on track!

This was a thoroughly enjoyable novel, with several wonderful storylines. While there was plenty of sexual tension to go around, the book was not about sex (unlike Ms. Harris' last "Dead" novel). Ms. Harris continues to slowly grow the relationship between Sookie and Eric, much to my delight. Alcide turns out to be a bigger loser than I ever imagined, but then, his horrible choice of the evil shifter Debbie Pelt as his (now dead) girlfriend should have warned me. Bill and Sookie still care for each other very much, but they seem to be moving on with their lives. Ms. Harris teases us with more information (but not enough!) regarding fairies (Claudine, and her brother, Claude) and the fairies' relationship with Sookie (fairy godmother ring a bell, anyone?). I was disturbed by Sookie's growing relationship with the were-panther, Calvin Norris, and I really hope Ms. Harris pairs or marries Calvin off to someone other than Sookie in the next book. Calvin is nice, but I wouldn't wish a life in the weirdo were-panther community of Hotshot, LA, on anyone, especially Sookie. The novel ends with a great teaser ... in a few months, there will be a Summit of the Vampire Kings and Queens of the Southern States, and Eric wants to "hire" Sookie to attend the Summit with him. Now THAT should be a spectacular novel. Thank you, Ms. Harris, and keep up the great work! I anxiously await your next novel. [As an aside, I have a theory that Eric may have been the first vampire, or at least first Caucasian vampire, in the Americas. My theory: the name Eric uses for his "undercover" operations is "Leif" and since "Leif Ericson" (or more correctly, "Leiv Eiriksson") was the first European to land on present day Canadian soil about 1000 A.D., I believe Eric is using part of his former surname as his new first name. (Why isn't Eric more powerful within the vampire community, you ask, and why isn't he at least the King of Louisiana? I think he's not ruthless (evil) enough, and he doesn't want anyone to know. Personally, I hope his good morals (well, at least his lack of evilness!) will be what wins Sookie's heart.]
