It's colorful inside a computer.

I am reading the Nebula Award winning novels in chronological order. This is the winner for 1985.

I didn't like it but I didn't hate it.

It's full of detailed, but repetitive, scenes of life when you mentally get inside computer systems.These images, while fanciful, are completely off the wall. Maybe it's that the book is showing its age. The world is extremely violent to the point where they could be no structured society. Nobody thinks, you know, maybe I shouldn't kill that person.

There were several times when I thought, okay, it's over. But it wasn't. It kept going on with more of the same.

I was not able to identify with any of the characters, nor did I see their personalities develop.

These Nebula Award winners are a mixed bag. Some are great. Some are awful. This was slightly to the awful side.

Incredible imagination, incredible writing.

This book popularized a new genre - cyberpunk. Although Gibson may not have been the first to explore the cyberspace world (e.g., Brunner, Vinge, and others) he entered with a splash, or perhaps a tsunami. What is most ironic is that Gibson wrote Neuromancer on a typewriter, not being a computer user.

The opening line of Necromancer is often cited as an example of creative writing. Rather than opening with "It was a dark and stormy night" Gibson introduces us to his world with, "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel."

""It's not like I'm using," Case heard someone say, as he shouldered his way through the crowd around the door of the Chat. "It's like my body's developed this massive drug deficiency." It was a Sprawl voice and a Sprawl joke. The Chatsubo was a bar for professional expatriates; you could drink there for a week and never hear two words in Japanese...."

The book that started it all.

What can one say about the book that started cyberpunk? Well, probably not much about it starting cyberpunk, as Gibson notoriously hates the term. But this is a complete masterpiece. Thrilling, inventive, emotionally gripping, thought-provoking, grittier than reality ever was, and just plain cool to boot. I read Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash as my first foray into the genre termed 'cyberpunk' (and have since re-read it many times, as I'm sure I'll do with Neuromancer) and decided I had to see the start of it all. I wasn't disappointed and I would highly recommend this for any fan of technology, hacking, body modification, virtual reality, politics, science fiction, futurism, any sort of punk, mind-bending, or exciting stories of any kind. Do yourself a favor and read this if you haven't already; do yourself a favor and reread it if you have.

Better than book two ...

Sookie Stackhouse was only interested in one vampire and that was Bill, her boyfriend. However, Bill seemed to be putting some distance between them recently. Then he disappeared to another state! His sinister and sexy boss, Eric, said that Bill had been summoned to Mississippi by Lorena. She was a lady vampire Bill had lived with for some time before. That was enough for Sookie. She was on the way to Mississippi.
Alcide Herveaux was to be Sookie's contact/guide. He was a werewolf. With his help, Sookie could enter places that mere mortals seldom dared tread, such as Club Dead. The vampire king of Mississippi (yes, readers, you read that correctly) was Russell Edgington. Russell took interest in Sookie very quickly. Eric arrived on the scene, in disguise as usual. Several attempts were made on Sookie's life and Bill was caught in an act of serious betrayal against Sookie's love. Sookie was not sure whether to save Bill or sharpen a few stakes of her own!
***** Much better than book two. Again, this mystery could be read as a "stand alone" book. But the main and secondary characters remain the same. The love triangle between Sookie, Bill, and Eric gets much rougher. That triangle is enjoyed more by those who have read the first two previous books though.
This entire series, thus far, is humorous, fun, very sexy, and highly recommended! *****

Darker, more violent but still FINE

I'd give CLUB DEAD a 4.5 if that were possible. First off, I really love this series. It's unique in its supernatural chills mixed with insightful social speculation, lusty romance and hoot-out-loud hilarity. (Hamilton's Anita Blake series, you say? Puh-leeze.) So I approach it as a solid 5 just for great world building and characterization, then work down from there.
I won't bother with a plot summary since it's already been done but this book is less balanced than the first two in the series. The characters are still vivid and grow in suprising but logical ways. Sookie is just as tough, wry and clear-sighted about her own situation and vulnerabilities. Her lover Bill The Vampire's unexpected treachery suprised me but Harris is nothing if not tough minded. She's consistently sprinkled reminders throughout all the diverting humor and action that vampires are fundamentally different; they do not share conventional human morality or emotions. Vampire area boss Eric is still a gorgeous hunk who cheerfully lusts for Sookie but shows signs of being a more simpatico, genuine friend, albeit somewhat reluctantly. (He's still a vampire and "doesn't *like* having feelings, remember.) The introduction of hunky (and breathing) Alcide the Werewolf, hung up on the Ex-Girl Friend From Hell, makes a poignant counterpoint to Sookie's situation. And Bubba, oh my GOD, the ineffable Bubba...(This raving won't make a lick of sense to anyone who hasn't read the series but betcha anyone who HAS can't keep from chortling.)
As always w/ this this series, there are some purely wonderful scenes. Sookie and Alcide nervously trying to dispose of a corpse wrapped in a shower curtain, "like a big green burrito." And as usual Harris seamlessly, suavely injects unexpected humor into horror and vice versa. An appalling bloodbath at Club Dead jolts weres and shapeshifters, already jittery from the full moon, into drifting through the carnage as falcons, German Sheperds and a stray bison. It's pretty danged disconcerting to snicker during a scene where the thoroughly likeable main character gets a stake driven into her side.
But that leads to my one caveat about this book. It's exhausting in its relentless violence against Sookie. Over the span of a few days she's subjected to one horrific assault after another, bam, bam, bam. She isn't granted any respite or downtime and neither is the reader. Even after her harrowing rescue of Bill from the torture chamber--a logical watershed moment--she's ambushed and/or brutally assaulted two more times (once by Bill) and then once again when she finally, grimly flees home. Maybe the constant violence and terror (no matter how deftly leavened with wry humor) set up Sookie's decision to slam the door against her dear undead but the book still ends with a thump. The relentless tension never really gets released; it just...ends.
I'm sure (uh, I *hope*) Charlaine Harris will back-fill the aftermath in the next book. (Soon, please!) It just would have been satisfying to have that coasting-down and wrapping-up at the end of this book for balance. I feel a little thwarted of conversations and resolutions that could have served as coda to this installment. Bill helplessly marching backward, her brush still in hand, doesn't quite cut it. It's not like Harris hasn't built huge suspense already...how will Sookie cope now, with her increasing familiarity and fame with the undead and supernatural ? If she can't "go back", where can she go...and where and how far does she *want* to go? Great stuff.
Please place these few, very minor quibbles in perspective. This series is a genuine, rare *find* for readers jaded with the same old same old. Charlaine Harris is a writer, not a by-the-numbers word factory, who won't insult your intelligence, waste your time or money. If you haven't read the series, you're in for a treat.

I still love this series, but careful....rise of AB Factor

I can't tell you how much I looked forward to this book, more than I've looked forward to books in a long time.
However, I was not as happy with this one as I could have been.
Of course, I still enjoyed it, read it in one sitting even. And i absolutly cannot wait for the fourth book (Anyone know when it will be?
But, some things to consider:
Watch out for the AB Factor. The AB Factor is the Anita Blake factor. I used to love the Hamilton series about the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter. However, after about oh, book four, Anita became quickly, EVERY other person's object of lust in the vicinity. Human, nonhuman, straight, gay, bi...whatever. EVERYone wants to *bleep* Anita.
Well, it appears in this book that this same factor is creeping into the Harris series. Please, oh please, Ms Harris...don't make Sookie the object of lust to everyone...please?
I wish the book had kept the men wanting Sookie to either Bill or Eric. Adding in Alcide, and the Weres, and such..well, it was just too much. Part of the charm of Sookie is that I can see her as EVERYwoman.
I loved that she sent both guys out of her house at the end, and I loved too that she acknowledged to herself that since dating Bill, she's been beaten more than any person ought to have to endure. That's a very telling factor of her life. It's gotten out of control.
I did get a tad annoyed that she's constantly being beaten up or threatened in this book....readers barely catch their breath before another attack happens.
I wanted more details too on Bill's infidelity....I'm shocked...what happened?????? What the heck is his deal? For an "old fashioned" vamp, he's definitely changed.
Please, hurry with the next one.....I need some closure...this book left me hanging and I need more :)

A Separate Piece of Joe Haldeman

A Separate War and Other Stories is an attempt by the old sci-fi writer, Joe Haldeman (The Forever War) to represent stories of his full range as a writer. This is an interesting concept, as he starts his first tale as one of the stories he ever first submitted, to his last one, a funky tale written like a movie script!

Listing all the stories and analyzing each would be hard not only on this writer but on the reader as well -- so here are the ones that impacted me, good or ill.

The intro written by one of my favorite writers, Connie Willis, was entertaining enough. Usually I skip these prefaces, but she gushes about the eloquence of Joe and her excitement at meeting him. I can relate, regarding meeting celebrities. Moving on...

The first story, A Separate War, was the best one. It takes up where The Forever War leaves off. It's military science fiction at its best -- an alien/human war where one must compensate for the great distances traveled, the impossibility of relationships, and he writes a gay element into the story to give it some interest and perhaps shock value.

I find this in several stories where his characters have some character flaw, are in the military, are gay to some extent or are impacted by a cold and ruthless social norm.

Finding My Shadow was a sad love story about Boston after its annihilation by a virus bomb. The government has declared the area a disaster area. The protagonist however, who left her lover to the virus, defects and joins the victims, only to find that the disease has long been dissipated. She tries to tell her government that with surprising results.

For White Hill is another 'alien war' story. A team of artists are on the planet Earth, which is uninhabitable except for a few stations where you can get the virus that wiped out all life flushed out of your system (in a gruesomely painful manner). It's really about love, about environmental disasters and about self-sacrifice. It's long, too!

Giza reflects on Man's attempt to bio-engineer himself to be able to mine the asteroids. Except his new creation rebels and the results are not pretty. I was not impressed with the last story, Fantasy for Six Electrodes and One Adrenaline Drip, which was written as a movie script where you could key in emotions and sex stimulation.

Haldeman makes his political views well known with an alien "child", Braxn, who becomes the President of the United States in order to know the feeling of power and his father who tamps down his power to teach him some humility. These are in the related tales Power Complex and Out of Phase.

Overall, an entertaining piece of work. I have yet to read Haldeman's novels but his short stories are hit or miss. I would probably go ahead and read his novels The Accidental Time Machine and The Forever War, but his shorts, well, are not bad at all.

A young writer who became an award winner in his genre.

These retrospective stories come with in-depth author notes and provide a strong chronological assessment of the changing skills of a young writer who became an award winner in his genre.

Joe Haldeman, for the most part, at his best

This fifteen story collection showcases award winning Joe Haldeman, for the most part, at his best. Especially of note for fans of THE FOREVER WAR is the title tale, A Separate War; this time he tells the climax from the viewpoint of Marygay instead of from William as he did in the original novel. This reviewer reread the novel except substituting instead Marygay's finish for the William ending and found it still as strong. Most of the other fourteen tales can be found in recent (since 2000) publications while two entries, "Out of Phase" and "Power Complex", are over thirty years old, displaying a relative newcomer getting his legs underneath him (the plots were better used later in CAMOUFLAGE). Many of the other excellent tales portray a bleak future. A SEPARATE WAR AND OTHER STORIES is a strong compilation of one of the best science fiction writers of the past few decades.

About the Author
Robert (Lynn) Asprin was born in 1946. While he has written some stand alone novels such as Cold Cash War, Tambu, The Bug Wars and also the Duncan and Mallory Illustrated stories, Bob is best known for his series: The Myth Adventures of Aahz and Skeeve; the Phule novels; and, more recently, the Time Scout novels written with Linda Evans. He also edited the groundbreaking Thieves World anthologies with Lynn Abbey. His most recent collaboration is License Invoked written with Jody Lynn Nye. It is set in the French Quarter, New Orleans where he currently lives.

Silly. Ridiculous, even. Pretty good read

These are silly books. If you want there to be a point, then you are in the wrong place.

These myths are quite funny, and extremely pun-y. If you can enjoy a good pun, a bit of zaniness (actually, make that three dashes of zaniness), and don't care whether the over-arching story is ever fully resolved, then you'll like these.

Each story is self-contained, and yet there is an overarching... plot, if you will... that connects them. At times, it seems as though the overarching plot will never move forward. It does, but only slowly, and clearly not to any intended conclusion.

Each individual plot, on the other hand, wraps itself up in a totally absurd manner in the individual volume.

Oh, go on, buy them. You'll fly right through them, chuckling the whole way. Who cares if there's no point!

I'll meet you at the bazaar. I've been stuck here for so long that I don't remember where I came from. But I've set up a tent. I tend dragons.

Mythical Madness

With the popularity of "Shrek" and "Harry Potter" I'm a bit surprised this hasn't had more of a resurgence. I read this series years ago and have wondered since why they weren't made into a series of movies. "Shrek" is along the same lines but not quite the same as the stories by Robert Asprin. If you want a good laugh be sure to read them. Full of puns, they center around an apprentice wizard named Skeeve and a large lizard like demon named Aahz from Pervect. Aahz takes upon the responsibility of training Skeeve when the master wizard that summoned him dies. They have some wonderfully funny adventures and meet all types of interesting characters. They live in a land of mythical humanoids and creatures. Great for all ages. These are two of the most entertaining books I have ever read.

Two great novels in one book!

Another Fine Myth is the first book in what became one of the best fantasy series EVER! Not only is it full of magic, monsters and mayhem but it also has lots of humor. Sheeve was a apprentice, until his teacher dies and leaves him with a powerless demon named Aahz, a couple of assassins and a evil magician who wishes to rule ALL the dimensions.

Few people can mix humor and fantasy such as Robert Asprin. And this book is not just the first novel, but also holds the follow-up, Myth Conceptions. In the second book Sheeve go to the court to try to become the Court Magician of Rodrick the Fifth. The amazing part is he gets the job with Aahz's help. But he finds, to his horror, that his first assignment is to stop the largest army the world has ever seen. All by himself.

The only other author I can think of, off the top of my head, who can pull off this mixture of humor and serious fantasy is Steven Brust.

Before she can so much as bark, Mercedes is up to her ears in vampires fighting vampires, werewolves fighting vampires, and humans in the middle. She aims to off the demon-possessed vampire before any more killings, but she can't count on everyone who ought to be her ally because the local top vampire has schemes of her own. Briggs' world in which witches, vampires, werewolves, and shape-shifters live beside ordinary people is plausibly constructed; the characters are excellent; and the plot keeps the pages flapping. Those who haven't read the first Mercedes Thompson tale, Moon Called (2006), may well want to after reading the second. Frieda Murray

Not quite as strong as Moon Called, but still worth five stars.

Blood Bound picks up not too long after the first in the series, Moon Called. Introduced to mechanic and sometimes-coyote, Mercedes Thompson in book one we get to dive right back into her world. A walker raised by werewolves, trained in mechanics by a fae and friend to vampires and ghosts, Mercy's world is far from ordinary. Blood Bound finds her vampire friend Stefan calling on her for return of a favor from Moon Called (book one). There's a new vampire in town and he's brought a demon with him. From here the story takes off at a stop-start pace involving both the local wolf pack and the vampire seethe, even getting some of the fae involved. But it is Mercy's ability to speak to ghosts that is in high demand and eventually she saves the day.

With diverse characters carried over from the first book and a few new ones salted into this one there were no faces I missed. I look forward to more unique and enjoyable characters as the series continues. Her efforts to make Mercy a girl-next-door-who-just-happens-to-be-a-shapeshifter character who is a girl most readers can relate to are spot on. I won't compare her to other characters of books in this same genre because she tops them all in sheer likability.

As a native of the area Briggs' tale takes place in I was once again impressed with her knowledge of the region and pleased at how well she carried me back home through her accurate description of the simple things like the climate, local culture and real places within the area. The unique choice of location certainly adds to the story as cities like New York, New Orleans, Los Angeles and such, while all wonderful places, have been over-used in similar series. Using an area not widely known has given this series a refreshing change from the cliched and expected.

If you enjoy a good paranormal tale with vampires, shapeshifters, ghosts and the like that won't get lost in between pages of sex scenes this series is for you. While there's still a tantalizing love triangle element I appreciate that Mercy is a very real woman who doesn't sport a harem of Adonis-like fellows at her beck and call. Briggs never loses the story's plot in attempts to hook her heroine up with her heroes.

Loved it even more the second time around!

I have so much love for this series! This was my second time reading this book and I can honestly say that I liked it just as much as I did the first and maybe even a bit more. One thing that I enjoy about re-reading books in series that I love is seeing how many things have changed for the characters. I love how some of the groundwork for future events takes root in earlier books.

The characters in this series are wonderful. Mercy is awesome. She has a wonderful sense of humor and she is tough. She knows that she is not as physically strong as many of the people she surrounds herself with but she more than makes up for it in mental toughness. She isn't afraid to take risks especially if it is the right thing to do. This book actually has a pretty big cast of characters and I really love them all. Adam and Sam are both great characters. The members of Adam's pack are all so well defined that they really stand out as individuals. I think it takes real skill to bring such a big group of characters to life.

The world building in this series is phenomenal. Everything just fits perfectly. It seems like each book adds another layer to the whole picture with complete consistency. I love all of the pack politics and learning about how all of these different groups have learned to live with each other. There were moments in this book that were quite creepy and I loved every moment of it.

I really enjoyed Lorelei King's narration. Her voice fits Mercy's character quiet well. It was really easy to follow and I thought she did a great job differentiating between all of the different characters. I also thought that she did a great job in displaying all of the different emotions of the story. I can't wait to continue this series in audio.

I would highly recommend this series to others. I think that anyone who enjoys urban fiction or paranormal stories should check out this series. I am a huge Patricia Briggs fan and can't wait to see what she can come up with next.

I am obsessed and intrigued with the character Mercy...she is not a werewolf, not Fae, she is a magical mystical
Native American walker, or shapeshifter who turns into a coyote. She gets into all sorts of trouble as she deals with vampires, fae and werewolves. Although Mercy does not belong to a pack she is under the protection of the head werewolf pack, as she was raised by them. Very intriguing which makes me off to read the next book in the series.

Great Book!

In several years online, this is the first time I have written email for the sole purpose of commending a product wholeheartedly and without reservation. I borrowed your Online Marketing Handbook from my local public library out of curiosity, and became progressively more impressed as the pages turned.
I am a 33 year old student of Travel and Tourism, and will open a travel agency in a couple of years.
My weaknesses however, are in sales and marketing, (which I am studying) and your book has provided me with many answers to questions; some of which I had not yet thought of asking. Your examples and case studies are great resources, and you present currently practised techniques in a thoughtful, non-judgemental manner; discussing their pros and cons objectively. Moreover, the number of online resources relevant to your subject that you reveal would almost justify the cost of your book alone.
To summarise; thanks for a terrific resource, you can count on at least one sale to me, and I hope you make as much money from the Online Marketing Handbook as I intend to from its use.

A Review from a Competitor

Dan Janal is a direct competitor of mine. He writes books, articles, speaks, and consults on Internet marketing and so do I. We both started marketing on the Net long before Cyberspace was an overused word. His Online Marketing Handbook (OMH) competes in many ways w/ my "Essential Business Tactics for the Net." Perhaps that's why the two books are often seen on each others Amazon pages under "People who bought this book also bought..." Well, I'm here to say publicly I've learned one heck of a lot from Dan and OMH over the years. I still refer back to it from time to time.
I recommend you buy his book. I use many of the practices in it. Many of those practices were first documented in the first edition of OMH. Anyway, **after** you buy his book, see how it compares w/ mine. Dan and I would tell you they complement each other quite neatly.

A Very Helpful Read

Updated for 1988, this is one of those books that is organized for easy scanning - a fact I really appreciate. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on Interactive Media Relations and Building Relationships with Reporters. The large number of case studies, online resources and specific strategies found within this book make for an easy recommendation.

Not his best stories, and possible publishing issues

Edgeworks Abbey and E-Reads have recently (2009) begun reprinting Harlan Ellison's works (32 titles in total).

No Doors, No Windows sounded like a good choice, from the few titles I was missing, so I picked up a copy.

This collects 16 stories, and has the introduction from the original release. Most of these stories were new to me, but they're short (the book is just under 200 pages, with the intro) and for the most part just aren't as good as his other works. Supposedly these are all mystery stories, having some sort of 'twist' at the end. Sometimes it comes off really well; sometimes it seems forced.

So, I'd say it's a collection of fairly low-end Ellison stories, with other collections of his works containing much better stories.

What's really unfortunate, and I don't know if this is a case with this collection or with this publisher/series, but the book itself suffers from some fairly major editorial issues. It seems that in every other story the word 'in' became the word 'hi.' Less commonly punctuation marks have vanished. In a couple cases letters even vanished, where 'had' becomes 'h l' for example. I don't believe I have a another copy of "The Man on the Juice Wagon" (it's not in The Essential Ellison: 50, which it shouldn't be anyways), so I can't determine if the two words spoken by Routener are intentional or not. (They are "Rggll" and "Fszl" in my copy. Huh?)

Overall, this requires me to give this collection 3 of 5 stars. Go grab a copy of Deathbird Stories or The Essential Ellison instead, assuming you don't already have them. Although if picking up those done by Edgeworks Abbey and E-Reads, give them a once-over first to verify the text issues aren't in the others.

One of his best

I don't know that I've ever read a book so compelling, and I honestly mean that. I've been a fan of Ellison's for awhile, and bought this book on a whim to help complete my collection. From the time I picked it up until the time I turned the last page, I was glued to it. I finished the book feeling completely shaken. It's like a pocket-sized portal to gazing into the abyss, and I assure you, it gazes back.

Suspense, Mystery, and a Little More...

There are quite a few excellent entries in this collection of what Harlan considers his suspense and mystery tales. I would argue that some of these are crime dramas with a twist. One entertaining story in particular, Eddie, You’re My Friend, seems to be the odd one out as it does not fit the theme of this anthology.

I found it hilarious—and typical of Harlan—that the introduction is 40 pages, about four times longer than the average story in the book!

My favorites include:

Status Quo at Troyden’s - When Mr. Huggerson’s monthly check from his son is $20 less than usual, he worries that he will not be able to afford rent and food. After working up the temerity to ask his landlord for a reduction in rent, Huggerson ends up in a position he never expected.

Nedra at f:5.6 - Veteran photographer Paul Shores has photographed countless women in his career. Nowadays, the most gorgeous models—nude or otherwise—no longer arouse him. Then along comes Nedra, and everything changes. She agrees to pose for him—and much more. Yet, there is something odd about her pictures…
