This is where the series really gets tired
By Gavin S. Richmond
I read these books about 15 years ago in high school and recently picked them up looking for some light reading. The first two volumes of double Myth tales were enjoyable enough, but by the time I got to this collection, Asprin's style of writing was beginning to grow somewhat annoying. He goes way overboard providing explanation for the characters attitude and motivation and turns them all into well mannered polite caring do-gooders who never break a promise and always turn their enemies into new best friends. It gets old really quick.
Another major problem with the books at this point is the fact that it takes so long to establish the plot and to rope in all the supporting characters that the resolutioins seem anti-climactic at best. The second book in this collection is a bad offender in this respect as most of the book is spent with no action taking place and lots and lots of boring exposition on why everyone is so good at giving advice and helping to be a good team member. Also, the big mystery character is pretty non-mysterious and I saw the outcome of the thin plot coming a mile away.
All in all, I can't say I recommend this collection of Myth stories unless you really really really enjoyed the first two. I won't be picking up the latter installations unless I really can't find anything else to read.

Are two in one better than one?
By N. Wallach
Ace Fantasy has packaged the MYTH series as collections of volumes where they package two of the stories in one book cover. In this particular instance this does not work at all as the two stories are so completely different and dissimilar that one wonders why they did it. The reason, of course, is that these two volumes happened to fall one after the other chronologically and so they ended up sharing the same cover.

The first book "Mything Persons" is classic Aahz and Skeeve. The zany story line has Aahz trying to apprehend some fugitives by cold cocking Skeeve and bursting into a world populated by vampires and werewolves. When he does not return, the rest of the gang goes in to rescue him and the normal mayhem ensues. Of course, the ending is typical with much hilarity and absolutely nonsensical events happening to end well. We are treated to all of the characters that have been following Skeeve in the past few books and get to meet some from the very first book who come back in a way that promises that they will become bigger parts in the future.

The second story is completely different. This one is really a serious reflective novel on the growth paths that adults take. At one time or another Skeeve, Aahz, Tananda, Massha, and Nunzion all reflect on what it means to grow up and how adults should behave towards one another. While there is a thin plot involving a preposterously complex card game and a character assassin hired to bring Skeeve down a notch, this is not in the same league as the previous five volumes. The humor is almost completely absent in a book that is turning rather serious. Even when the author tries to liven things up by introducing a bimbo companion to Skeeve by the name of Bunny, we find out that she is really a smart accountant who puts on the sex kitten act as a defensive mechanism!

So, if you are looking for vintage Asprin, the first volume will be to your liking while the second will drive you batty! I am wondering how the rest of the series shapes up as the second story here suggests a major departure from the norm and a completely different direction for the series to go in.

I will read the next volume (two-in-one set) just to see how it goes. I suggest you come along to, as the journet might be fun, or might be serious....

Out the Back Door
By Arthur W Jordin
Myth-Ing Persons (1984) is the fifth Fantasy novel in the Myth series, following Hit or Myth. In the previous volume, Skeeve settled the problems in Possiltum. Aahz conceived a devious plan to foil the Mob on Deva. And Don Bruce made an agreement with Skeeve.

In this novel, Skeeve is the representative for Mob on Deva. He is also receiving a retainer from the Devan Merchants Association to keep the Mob out of the Great Bazaar. Skeeve still doesn't know how to travel between dimensions without using a D-hopper.

Aahz is a Pervect from the Perv dimension. He had been a master magician, but lost his magical powers due to a practical joke. Now he is Skeeve's partner and mentor.

Massha is a mechanic from an unknown dimension. She uses devices to produce her magic. Now she is learning real magic from Skeeve as his apprentice.

Chumley is a Troll from the Trollia dimension. He is also the big brother of Tananda. He uses the Crunch persona to hide his shyness.

Tananda is a Trollop from the Trollia dimension. She has green skin and hair and a very voluptuous body. She is Chumley's little sister and an assassin.

Guido is a senior gangster in the Mob. He is now the personal bodyguard of the Great Skeeve.

Nunzio is Guido's cousin and is also a senior gangster. He is now another personal bodyguard of Skeeve.

In this story, Skeeve is returning to their tent when a kind soul warns him about the person who lives there. He is earnestly told about the strange doings of the Great Skeeve. After playing dumb for a while, Skeeve finally tells the Deveel his name and he runs screaming from the area.

Then Skeeve is confronted by Nunzio. Skeeve is not supposed to go out without his bodyguards. Skeeve apologizes, but gets Nunzio to admit that he and Guido would only slow down any magical assaults.

Then Skeeve goes upstairs to break up an argument between Guido and Aahz. It seems that Aahz believes that Guido has lost them some clients. Guido explains that he left them downstairs and they were gone when he returned.

Then Aahz and Skeeve let Guido know that there is another way out of the reception room. They run downstairs and find that the backdoor has been opened. They have kept it locked because they don't know where it leads.

The tent is much larger on the inside than it looks from the outside. It is actually the entrance to another dimension. Skeeve and his friends have been using their small portion of that dimension, but they have never checked out with whom they are sharing the place.

Then representatives of the Devan Merchants Association -- their landlords -- show up and demand the persons of three con artists. The "clients" were running a scam within the Great Bazaar and now they have escaped through the backdoor.

The Deveels insist on the return of the scammers, a full refund of the ill-gotten loot, or the banishment of Skeeve from the Bazaar. Naturally Aahz doesn't want to refund the money. So Skeeve asks for a little time to locate the con artists.

Skeeve insists on following the two men and a woman through the door. Aahz thinks he should go alone. When Skeeve keeps arguing, Aahz cold cocks him and leaves alone.

After Skeeve awakes, his first impulse is to rush after Aahz. But he decides to wait for a reasonable length of time. After a few days without word from Aahz, reasonable is looking closer.

Then a woman knocks on the backdoor and tells them that Aahz has been arrested for murder. Skeeve panics and starts issuing orders. Guido finally attracts his attention to mention that the young lady was one of the trio. When they look out the door, she is gone from the area.

Nunzio is left behind to explain to Chumley and Tananda when they return. Skeeve, Massha, and Guido leave within an hour. They step into a dim day.

This tale brings Skeeve and his friends into a dimension inhabited by vampires. The vampires usually get their blood from bottles, but they still have fangs and can turn into bats. For some reason, the vampires are very afraid of humans.

This story has the usual twists and turns and a few surprises. The next installment is Little Myth Marker. Read and enjoy!

Highly recommended for Asprin fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of simple magic, unusual vampires, and a young magician. If anyone has not previously read this series, the initial volume is Another Fine Myth.

From Publishers Weekly
Elrod ties up some loose ends from Cold Streets and picks up where 2006's Song in the Dark left off in Jack Fleming's swaggering 12th adventure. Jack, a hard-boiled vampire PI/club owner in 1938 Chicago, subdues and wins over Gabe Whitey Kroun, a big bad gang boss from New York whom Jack soon discovers is also undead. Whitey's vampire blood helps Jack's best friend, Charles Escott, survive a deadly infection and injuries from a nasty fight, but it may turn him into a bloodsucker. Elrod sometimes gets too caught up in nostalgic gangster-style chatter, but the action is solid, and while newcomers might feel like they've wandered into a half-finished film starring Humphrey Bogart and Vincent Price, fans will be thrilled. 1930s gangland Chicago - bullets fly and the undead sport a fedora
By H. Bala
SPOILER alert for the previous book SONG IN THE DARK:

P.N. Elrod keeps her fans waiting, and we just take it, huh? But that's the cachet she's earned by having put out this enormously satisfying Vampire Files series. It's taken four years, but the next and twelfth installment is here finally. DARK ROAD RISING picks up just about where Song in the Dark (Vampire Files, No. 11) leaves off, with Jack Fleming now saddled with keeping tabs on intimidating New York mob boss, Whitey Kroun, who'd recently joined the ranks of the undead.

I like that P.N. Elrod doesn't stay pat with Jack Fleming's life. There's evolution. Things are happening for Jack, and not necessarily all good. From being a slain reporter to a bloodsucking shamus in his debut BLOODLIST (The Vampire Files), Jack's gone up in the world some. Solved his own murder. Landed an awesome girlfriend. Got in good with the local Chicago mob. Became a nightclub owner. And then P.N. Elrod began seriously effing with him.

It's still 1938 and, to recap past events, Jack Fleming had just endured the darkest, most brutal moments of his life (yes, even worse than when he first got bumped off). The author has never shied away from exploring Jack's dark psyche and now she really works in the poor guy's currently fragile state. Jack's been tortured before, but this time... this time was too much, and I'm thinking being skinned alive by a psychopath will put a crimp in your friggin' joie de vivre. A traumatized Fleming tried to kill himself, which then led to a physical dust-up with his outraged best friend and private eye partner Charles Escott. Thanks to Jack, Charles ends up hospitalized, and, as we eventually learn, his condition begins to worsen. So, yes, as DARK ROAD RISING opens, the state of things suck in a big way for Jack Fleming.

Meanwhile, Hollywood is beckoning to the most important person in Jack's life, his talented chanteuse girlfriend Bobbi Smythe. So add that into his sackful of concerns.

The Vampire Files has always been about that terrific blend of noirish, pulpy period crime thriller and urban horror/fantasy. As ever, the characters are sharply written, the action crackles, and the tone is atmospheric. Jack Fleming is a very appealing first person narrator, a vampire with a conscience trying to do right and survive in gritty 1930s gangland Chicago. But this is a very dark series, and that signifies a gradual crumbling of ethics for Jack Fleming. He's still a good guy, but now he's more tarnished. He's killed people. He's done stuff, he's done disturbing stuff. And, for half a mo, he'd even gone insane. In DARK ROAD RISING I was curious to see how well our guy would hold up.

Some more catching up: Jack, as a favor to injured mobster boss and pal Gordy Weems, had reluctantly agreed to temporarily oversee Chicago's North Side mob business. One fallout to this is that Jack ends up keeping company with the mysterious New York crime lord Whitey Kroun. As mentioned, Kroun had himself just become a vampire, and I'm wondering if P.N. Elrod is setting him up for his own series. Kroun cuts a dangerous and sinister figure and, chances are, his forgotten past comes with even more unsavory details. The book gives Kroun his own passages to narrate, and he proves to be an interesting character, even if part of me was resentful that pages were being taken away from Jack's own storytelling. Much of DARK ROAD RISING revolves around Jack trying to figure out what's up with Kroun, and also revolves around Kroun, a cold bullet languishing in his skull, not only trying to recall his past life but also the gruesome events leading to his death.

But, even more worrisome for Jack, an old enemy resurfaces and this deranged killer is bent on unlocking Jack's secrets. He gets darn close.

DARK ROAD RISING, like the other Vampire Files thrillers, demonstrates an authentic period feel, that oldtime 1930s gangster era flavor, and it meshes surprisingly well with the brooding supernatural elements. It's kinda like as if Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler had hung out with Richard Matheson in some seedy bar and the ideas just wafted up like cigarette smoke, or something else that wafts. I don't put DARK ROAD RISING over the prior entries, I don't think it's the best one yet. But it's just as entertaining, briskly paced, and as absorbing a read as those other novels.

For whatever reason, the other day I was trying to come up with some of my favorite more recent fictional literary characters. Several names came up right away: Repairman Jack, Harry Dresden, Katniss Everdeen, Slippery Jim diGriz (although, okay, the Stainless Steel Rat ran around some three decades ago, so he shouldn't count), Miri and Val Con, and Jack Fleming. It's always cool to catch up with Jack Fleming, living his unlife in perilous post-Prohibition Chicago, loving his girl, sleuthing cases with Charles Escott (who brandishes a Sherlock Holmes swagger), rubbing elbows with the underworld and then occasionally throwing elbows at the underworld. And, the whole while, he's trying to curb these unholy appetites. Jack Fleming may be prone to seizures and may have lost the ability to hypnotize people, but he's still a bad mother, and he's hardboiled enough and ornery enough to thrive in merciless, trigger-happy Windy City. Although, for his sake, he should probably tone down on the smart-aleck routine (but I'm glad that he doesn't).

And if you're starved for more Jack Fleming adventures, you should know there's a novella out there titled THE DEVIL YOU KNOW. It's a sequel to BLOODCIRCLE and has Jack crossing paths once more with fellow vampire Jonathan Barrett (who is featured in his own series). I say pick up both DARK ROAD RISING and THE DEVIL YOU KNOW. It may be long, long years again before P.N. Elrod gets out the next Vampire Files book. And that bites...

Worth the wait
By Phil Harmonic
Dark Road Rising was a long time coming, and what a relief to see it. Sometimes, when I see my Vampire Files neatly arrayed in my bookshelf, I worry that Ms. Elrod will decide she won't write another. That would be a tragedy. Nobody does it better than PN Elrod.

Unfortunately, I've come too late - other reviewers have already outlined the plot and I don't want to give spoilers by saying more.

My feeling is that another narrator adds new dimension. Not only do you get to look inside another character's mind, you also see Jack from Gabriel "Whitey" Kroun's perspective.

You can't help but like Jack, a vampire with human failings, who is still very much the humanitarian. When circumstances force him to use his vampire abilities in ways he would rather not, his conscience becomes a heavy burden to bear, and Jack refuses to take the easy way out. This is apparent when he could avoid a beating from Shoe Coldfield, and a lowering in his girlfriend Bobbi's esteem, by telling them how he came to put Charles Escott in hospital. But, as far as Jack is concerned, he did the dirty deed and earned any punishment coming his way, so he says nothing. This is only one facet of Jack's personality that makes him a hero you feel very close to. The Vampire Files are more than vampire tales, or mysteries - in them, Ms. Elrod explores a man and his ethics, which barely diminish when he becomes one of the undead.

Mystery, murder and mobsters in 1930s Chicago - throw in a vampire or two and meet Sam Spade with fangs. Don't miss out on a tremendously good read. This has all the atmosphere, chills, thrills and dark deeds of the previous books in the series. And if you haven't read any of the Vampire Files, go get yourself Bloodlist and discover Jack from the beginning of his career as the vampire you`d want as your best friend.

Best Vampire Files entry yet has some new tricks
By Inanna Arthen
*Dark Road Rising* is the best book yet in the Vampire Files series, further developing the numerous complex characters and taking us, once again, into some very rough territory. It opens a few minutes after the ending of *Song in the Dark,* with Fleming driving Gabriel "Whitey" Kroun, one of the few other vampires he's met since his own turning, to a safe place where Kroun can recover from the violent events that concluded the previous book. Fleming has been recovering himself from the aftereffects of severe trauma following his brutal torture by a gangland thug in *Cold Streets,* book 10 of the series. Some of his vampire powers, such as the ability to hypnotize others, have been lost or sharply curtailed, and Fleming has no idea how to heal himself or whether he even can. He is therefore very interested in the fact that Kroun lacks some of Fleming's gifts, such as the capacity for dematerializing, which Kroun attributes to the fact that his death left him with a bullet permanently lodged in his skull.

*Dark Road Rising* focuses principally on Kroun's efforts to unravel the mysteries of his own identity and how he came to be dead and a vampire. Kroun appears to know things about vampires that Fleming does not, but he doesn't share Fleming's driving need to learn more about what he knows and how he learned it. As Kroun persists in tracking down ever more disturbing clues about his past, Fleming's own recent history sneaks up behind him and catches him while he's preoccupied with Kroun.

Because of the strong focus on Kroun and his story, *Dark Road Rising* features a dual first person narrative, with chapters alternating between Fleming and Kroun. This device was used by Adrienne Barbeau and Michael Scott in *Vampyres of Hollywood,* but I think Elrod pulls it off much more successfully.

I highly and enthusiastically recommend *Dark Road Rising*. Jack Fleming is a "good guy vampire" but these are not romantic stories. Elrod doesn't flinch from gritty details, or the kind of brutal violence that you'd expect from the series milieu, 1930s Chicago. The supernatural elements--vampires and at least one ghost--are treated with matter-of-fact respect, as Elrod emphasizes character and plot rather than gimmickry and camp.

Well, one would be, anyway. Welcome to Thesrad, one of the Sunnydales of the Hyborian Age.

Sonja is wandering through some mountains, gets really sick (skimpy scale mail I guess leaves you prone to the flu, in winter climes). Barely makes it through, and collapses. Luckily, she is found by the deposed lord of Thesrad. He reminds her of the erstwhile boyfriend from earlier in the series, a true leader of men.

Unfortunately for said lord, he has been deposed to a vulture god worshipping extremely powerful sorcerer. Fortunately, said sorcerer's daughter, unlike the scion of Endithor, is a half snakewoman hybrid, who is the agent of a snake goddess. Needless to say, the two do not get along at all. Serpent wench Ilura offers her aid to Sonja and her new friend. Sonja, of course, after nice bloke helps her, is all hot for some sorcerer slaying and demon killing. Lord takes two volunteer squads into the city to try and foment an uprising. Serpent woman vs summond vulture demon = draw, luckily for those of the local band left behind by the boss.

The little adventure works, but lots of them die. Sonja takes the magic dagger off the gate to hell. Ooops. Did have good sorcerer killing powers though, or at least slowed them down. Minor league sorcerers went to work for Kushian vulture boy. 2 out of 7 is probably a good result for 'left alive' for that band, after the carnage in the retaking of the town. After Sonja, a snakey sorceress and a plague of reptiles descend. A bunch of prisoners freed, some nobles rebel, and an extremely bloody time is had by all.

In other words, exactly the sort of pulp fantasy slayage you are generally after.

not as good as the first book (which is my favourite) but still an actin packed fast paced read that you can read quick and enjoy every step of the way and be absolutely immersed in the hyborian world. the boris vallejo covers really compliment the stories too giving just enough visualisation to assist the imagination. a fun light-hearted read. recommended

The definitive JPEG book for programmers
By John A Korejwa jr
This book is a "must have" for anyone interested in understanding the JPEG standard. It has two distinct parts.
The second half is the JPEG standard itself. It contains all the technical details of how JPEG works, including pseudocode flow charts, and test data to verify JPEG compliance.
The first half is the author's (less formal) understanding of the JPEG standard, where he explains the details of the standard which might be unclear to the novice.
Everything from the aspects of the human visual system, to the mathematics of Discrete Cosine Transformation, to entropy coding, to JPEG file organization is explained.
I knew nothing about image processing before studying this book. After studying this book (for a long time) I was able to write a complete application and have total control over reading and writing JPG files.

A "must have" for anyone working with the details of JPEG
By calvinnme
Created by the Joint Photographic Experts Group, the JPEG standard defines a toolkit of processes for lossy and lossless encoding and decoding of continuous-tone still images. This guide, which includes the the complete text of the ISO JPEG standards DIS 10918-1 and draft DIS 10918-2, offers detailed information on the JPEG modes of operation, signaling conventions, and structure of compressed data. It also provides a general review of image-coding techniques, so it does not assume the reader has expert status in data compression and coding techniques.

This is by far the most complete exposition of JPEG in existence. It's written by two people who know what they are talking about: both served on the ISO JPEG standards committee. If you want to know how JPEG works or why it works that way, this is the book to have. There are a number of errors that were in the first printing of this book that were all repaired in the second printing. The official specification of JPEG is not currently available on-line, and is not likely ever to be available for free because of ISO and ITU copyright restrictions, which makes it valuable to have in this book.

If you study this book in depth, you should be able to write programs that completely control the reading and writing of JPEG image files. This is different from most other books that contain scattered information on the JPEG standard and on image compression, but contain insufficient information for programmers who actually need to work with the standard on a pixel-by-pixel level. Also, considering this book was published by an "academic publisher", I was surprised at its accessible tone and numerous helpful diagrams. Note that if you are interested in JPEG2000, that this book does not contain information on that standard. The following is the table of contents:

Introduction.
Image Concepts and Vocabulary.
Aspects of the Human Visual Systems.
The Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT).
Image Compression Systems.
JPEG Modes of Operation.
JPEG Syntax and Data Organization.
Entropy Coding Concepts.
JPEG Binary Arithmetic Coding.
JPEG Coding Models.
JPEG Huffman Entropy Coding.
Arithmetic Coding Statistical.
More on Arithmetic Coding.
Probability Estimation.
Compression Performance.
JPEG Enhancements.
JPEG Applications and Vendors.
Overview of CCITT, ISO, and IEC.
History of JPEG.
Other Image Compression Standards.
Possible Future JPEG Directions.

This is a reprint of the original JPEG book. Unfortunately, the publisher has scanned in the original. As a result, all of the photographs that are supposed to show the compression behavior and artifacts, show the scanned halftone artifacts instead.

Get the original book if you possibly can.

The first novel in William C. Dietz's acclaimed Legion of the Damned series...

There is one final choice for the hopeless—the terminally ill, the condemned criminals, the victims who cannot be saved: becoming cyborg soldiers in the Legion. Their human bodies are destroyed and they are reborn as living weapons. But when aliens attack the Empire, the Legion must choose sides.

From Publishers Weekly
This imperial space opera takes up the theme of fighting against impossible odds. At the center of the story is a futuristic French Foreign Legion made up of cyborgs and other societal misfits. The scrappy, chip-on-their-shoulder soldiers occupy their own planet in the far reaches of a contracting human space empire. When a xenophobic alien empire strikes at the humans, the legion becomes the last best hope for human salvation. The legionnaires are an oddball lot, ranging from their cut-throat, sexy commander, General Marianne Mosby, to the passionate Sergeant Bill Booly and the industrious, never-say-can't Legion General Ian St. James. Their cyberborgic compadres, with human minds trapped in armored killing machines, are rich and quirky characters as well. Throw in a Nero-like emperor more interested in his own pleasure than in the future of his empire, aristocratic conspirators working behind the scenes to take over the throne and ruthless, paranoid aliens with no way of understanding human psychology, and Dietz's ( Drifter's War ) latest tale becomes exciting and suspenseful. The humanity of the characters mixes well with the action to give this space drama real punch.

The few. The proud. The dead. The cyborg legionnaires.
By Daniel Jolley
I'm quite pleased that I finally got around to sampling the wares of William C. Dietz, a writer with an impressive number of science fiction novels under his belt already. Legion of the Damned is a well-paced, absorbing novel of futuristic military science fiction based on a premise I find fascinating. A couple of centuries into the future, murderers and their ilk are still being executed, but they are given a second chance - of sorts - to evade the permanent clutches of the Grim Reaper. Those who choose the option of resuscitation are, if approved, reborn in the form of cyborgs - basically, these are gigantic robots of death consisting of a human head inside an artificial and quite deadly body. (For the record, other humans, such as the terminally ill, also have the chance to opt in to the cyborg program.) The cyborgs serve under the command of the Legionnaires, a military force founded on the twentieth-century French Foreign Legion. While they serve in the military of imperial Earth, the Legion is their country (just as their motto says). By the time of the events described herein, the Legion has finally been granted a home of their own, exercising a form of self-autonomy on Algeron, near the outer rim of the Empire's control. Of course, there are many human Legionnaires, but the cyborgs pack most of the punch. Training is so rigorous that many fall along the way, and some even hope for a second death in order to finally fall into oblivion.
There is great trouble in the Empire. The Hudathans, a militaristic alien race, have begun decimating imperial planets on the outer rim and are obviously working their way toward Earth itself. The Admiral of the Imperial Navy is an opportunistic and power-hungry individual who supports a retreat of the Imperial Navy, ostensibly to prepare an overwhelming attack against the Hudathans when they move farther into the empire's region of space; in actuality, her desires are fuelled largely by a determination to make a hero out of herself and to finally rob the Legion of its might and power. Many on the home world (especially those with an economic interest in the planets that stand to be abandoned) argue that Earth's forces should engage the enemy now, while they are still in the outer rim. To the misfortune of everyone concerned, the Emperor is basically insane - as mad as Nero and possibly even more decadent. At least Nero didn't have seven advisors hard-coded into this brain as a child and left to fight amongst themselves inside his mind.
Obviously, a major space battle between Earth's Imperial Navy and the Hudathan fleet is to be expected as this novel wends its way to a conclusion. However, a war between the Imperial Navy and the Legionnaires on Algeron, a localized imperial civil war, looms even closer on the horizon, for the Legion is quite unwilling to give up its home base and allow its forces to be dispersed. Basically, a lot of action is to be found in these pages, and Dietz excels at describing the militaristic aspects of his plot. There are a number of sub-stories incorporated into this fictional fabric involving the formation of a cabal to oppose the Emperor on Earth, an inter-species love story (that never completely clicks, in my opinion), legalistic power-plays among the alien Hudathans themselves in preparation for cosmic war, and a coming together of two cyborgs who "met" in a most unusual fashion in their prior human lives. The ultimate conclusion seems to come a little too quickly and easily, but all in all this is a thoroughly enjoyable novel that all fans of military science fiction should quite enjoy reading.

Book 1 reviewed by a complete series reader
By Robert Johnston
I recently finished the newly released, ninth and final installment. If you are reading this review, I assume that you are looking to enjoy a grand space opera and a place to jump in. Good space opera is hard to find. Looking around and deciding where you might want to invest a lot of reading time in a multi-installment series is about the only way to find it. Great stuff is rare. In the genre of military space opera, Dietz has earned my highest regard with this "Legion of the Damned" series.

The series story is well bound in multiple threads of persons, families, friends and foes. Dietz writing style is front-line gritty, unexpected and action filled. Dietz strength is character development, narrative and the unexpected. There was more than a few became all-nighter reads for me. Dietz develops a compelling story and latches hard to your mind's eye. Then, he neatly wraps up each installment and after nine books, he wraps up the story. There is a lot to be said about `finishing'.

If there is a weakness in the series one might find the lack of high frontier scientific theory made manifest a missing opportunity. Some reviewers discuss this and you can choose as you will. There are no new forces of nature, quantum existences or multi-universes here. Dietz simply extrapolates human proclivities and technology to make a great story in an interesting galaxy. His authorial license leaps forward in scientific imagination and is contrasted with the reliability of essentials.

I don't think you go wrong giving Dietz a try. 5-Star start ... 5 Star end.

First book in a well developed military science fiction series. Legionnaires to the rescue.
By fastreader
In this military science fiction series, of which this is book one, we have the legendary Legionnaires as our protagonists.

Humanity as flowed out from mother planet and has invested in mining and populated other worlds. While there has always been minor conflicts between some of the settlements and other species this pales in comparison with the Hudathan who are sweeping through humanities settlements without significant resistance.

The Hudathan battle strategy is simple. Bombard the hell out of the planet and kill everything in sight. No discussions, no prisoners, no cares, just obliterate everything. Next target please.

However when they reach Algernon they run into their first resistance in the form of the Legionnaires on site. And in fact, experience their first defeat.

Meanwhile on Earth all the various military groups are fighting amongst themselves and trying to convince the Emperor that their individual strategies are correct. Which means the Emperor has way too many options so like most politicians just keeps everyone dangling by a string and makes no decision.

Characters are well developed and the multiple minor story lines bubble along and eventually merge with the overall story.

Lots of good military battles, as well as political ones.

Dietz ranks right up there with Ian Douglas and Jack Campbell in military science fiction.

This is book one of a series which I know I am going to enjoy reading the rest of.

Be sure to check this series out, you will not be disappointed

Prologue

The wolf stumbled from the cave, knowing that someone was searching for him and he couldn't protect himself this time. Feverish and ill, his head throbbing so hard that it hurt to move, he couldn't pull his thoughts together.

After all this time, after all of his preparations, he was going to be brought down by an illness.

The searcher's tendrils spread out again, brushing across him without recognition or pause. The Northlands were rife with wild magic—which is why other magic couldn't work correctly here. The searcher looked for a wizard and would never notice the wolf who concealed the man in its shape unless the fever betrayed him.

He should lie low, it was the best defense…; but he was so afraid, and his illness clogged his thoughts.

Death didn't frighten him; he sometimes thought he had come here seeking it. He was more afraid he wouldn't die, afraid of what he would become. Perhaps the one who looked for him was just idly hunting—but when he felt a third sweep, he knew it was unlikely. He must have given himself away somehow. He'd always known that he would be found one day. He'd just never thought it would be when he was so weak.

He fought to blend better with the form he'd taken, to lose himself in the wolf. He succeeded.

The fourth sizzle of magic, the searcher's magic, was too much for the wolf. The wolf was a simpler creature than the mage who hid within him. If he was frightened, he attacked or ran. There was no one here to attack, so he ran.

It wasn't until the wolf was tired that he could gather his humanity—that was a laugh, his humanity—well then, he gathered himself together and stopped running. His ribs ached with the force of his breath and the tough pads of his feet were cut by stones and an occasional crystal of ice from a land where the sun would never completely melt winter's gift. He was shivering though he felt hot, feverish. He was sick.

He couldn't keep running—and it wasn't only the wolf who craved escape—because running wasn't escape, not from what he fled.

He closed his eyes, but that didn't keep his head from throbbing in time with his pounding pulse. If he wasn't going to die out here, he would have to find shelter. Someplace warm, where he could wait and recover. He was lucky he'd come south, and it was high summer. If it had been winter, his only chance would have been to return to the caves he'd run from.

A pile of leaves under a thicket of aspen caught his attention. If they were deep enough to be dry underneath, they would do for shelter. He headed downhill and started for the trees.

There was no warning. The ground simply gave out from under him so fast he was lying ten feet down on a pile of rotted stakes before he realized what had happened.

It was an old pit trap. He started to get up and realized that he hadn't been as lucky as he thought. The stakes had snapped when he hit them, but so had his rear leg.

Perhaps if he hadn't already been so sick, so tired, he could have done something. He'd long ago learned how to set pain aside while he used his magic. But, though he tried, he couldn't distance himself from it this time, not while his body shivered with fever. Without magic, with a broken leg, he was trapped. The rotting stakes meant no one was watching the pit—no one to free him or kill him quickly. So he would die slowly.

That was all right because he didn't want to be free so much as he didn't want to be caught.

This was a trap, but it wasn't His trap.

Perhaps, the wolf thought, as his good legs collapsed again, perhaps it would be good not to run anymore. The ground was cold and wet underneath him, and the flush of heat from fever and the frantic journey drained into the chill of his surroundings. He shivered with cold and pain and waited patiently…; even happily, for death to come and take him.

"If you go to the Northlands in the summer you might avoid snowstorms, but you get mud." Aralorn, Staff Page, Runner, and Scout for the Sixth Field Hundred, kicked a rock, which arced into the air and landed with an unsatisfactory splut just ahead of her on the mucky trail.

It wasn't a real trail. If it hadn't led from the village directly to the well-used camping spot her unit was currently stopped at, she'd have called it a deer trail and suspected that human feet had never trod it.

"I could have told them that," she said. "But no one asked me."

She took another step, and her left boot sank six inches down into a patch that looked just like the bit before it that had held her weight just fine. She pulled her foot out and shook it, trying unsuccessfully to get the thick mud off. When she started walking again, her mud-coated boot weighed twice what her right boot did.

"I suppose," she said in resigned tones as she squelched along, "training isn't supposed to be fun, and sometimes we have to fight in the mud. But there's mud in warmer places. We could go hunting Uriah in the old Great Swamp. That would be good training and useful, but no one would pay us. Mercenaries can't possibly be useful without someone paying us. So we're stuck—literally in the case of our supply wagons—practicing maneuvers in the cold mud."

Her sympathetic audience sighed and butted her with his head. She rubbed her horse's gray cheekbone under the leather straps of his bridle. "I know, Sheen. We could get there in an hour if we hurry—but I see no sense in encouraging stupid behavior."

One of the supply wagons was so bogged down in mud that it had broken an axle when they tried to pull it out. Aralorn had been sent out to the nearest village to have a smith repair the damage because the smith they'd brought with them had broken his arm trying to help get the wagon out.

That there had been a nearby village was something of a surprise out in the Northlands—though they weren't very deep into them. That village had probably been why the mercenary troops had been sent to practice where they were instead of twenty miles east or west.

The mended axle was tied lengthwise onto the left side of Sheen's saddle, with a weighted bag tied to the opposite stirrup to balance the load. It made riding awkward, which was why Aralorn was walking. Part of the reason, anyway.

"If we get to camp too early, our glorious and inexperienced captain will be ordering the wagon repaired right away. He'll send us out from a fairly good campsite to march for another few miles until the sun sets—and we'll be looking for another reasonable place to camp all night." The captain was a good sort, and would be a fine leader—eventually. But right now he was pretty set on proving his mettle and so lost to common sense. He needed to be managed properly by someone with a little more experience.

"If I don't arrive with the axle until it's dark, then he'll have to wait to move out until dawn," she told Sheen. "With daylight, it won't take long to fix the wagon, and we'll all get a good night's sleep. You and I can trot the last half mile or so, just enough to raise a light sweat and claim it was the smith who took so long."

Her warhorse jerked his head up abruptly. He snorted, his nostrils fluttering as he sucked air and flattened his ears at whatever his nose was telling him.

Aralorn thumbed off the thong that kept her sword in its sheath and looked around carefully. It wasn't just a person—he'd have alerted her to that with a twitch of his ear.

The scent of blood might have called her horse's battle training to the fore, she thought, or maybe he sensed some sort of predator. This was the Northlands, after all; there were bear, wolves, and a few other things large enough to cause Sheen's upset.

The gray stallion whinnied a shrill challenge that was likely to be heard for miles around. She could only hope that her captain didn't hear it. Whatever Sheen sensed, it was in the aspen grove just uphill from where they stood. It was also, apparently, in no hurry to attack them since nothing answered Sheen's call: no return challenge, not even a rustle.

She could go on past. Likely, if it hadn't come out yet, it wasn't going to. But what was the fun in that?

She dropped Sheen's reins on the ground. He'd stand until she came back—at least until he got hungry. Aralorn drew her knife and crept into the thicket of aspen.

He heard her talking and smelled the horse without moving. He'd heard them come by earlier, too—or he thought so anyway. The horse put up a fuss this time because the wind that ruffled the leaves of the aspen would have brought him the wolf's scent.

He waited for them to leave. Tonight, he thought hopefully. Tonight would be the third night he'd spent here, maybe it would be the last. But part of him knew better, knew just how long it took for a body to die of thirst or of hunger. He was too strong yet. It would be tomorrow, at the soonest.

He'd distracted himself with the hope of death, and only the sound of the woman's feet told him that she'd approached. He opened his eyes to see a sturdily built woman, plain of face except for her large sea-green eyes, leaning over the edge of the pit. She wore the uniform of the mercenaries, and there were calluses and mud on her hands.

He didn't want to see her eyes, didn't want to feel interest in her at all. He only wanted her to leave him alone so he could die.

"Plague them all," she said, her voice tight and angry. Then her voice softened to a croon. "How long have you been here, love?"

The wolf recognized the threat of the knife she held as she slid down the far side of the pit to stand, one foot on either side of his hips. He growled, rolling off his side in preparation to get up—because he'd forgotten he wanted to die. Just for a moment. He shook from exertion, sickness, and from the pain of moving his leg. He lay back down again and flattened his ears.

"Shh," she crooned, inexplicably sheathing her knife in the face of his aggression. "Not so long as all that, apparently. Now what shall I do about you?"

Go away, he thought. He growled at her with as much threat as he could, feeling his lips peel back from his fangs and the hair rise along his spine.

The expression on her face was not the one that he'd expected. Certainly not one any sane person would turn on a threatening wolf she was standing over. She should fear him.

Instead…; "Poor thing," she said in that same crooning tone. "Let's get you out of this, shall we?"

She dropped her gaze away from his and knelt to examine his hips, humming softly as she moved closer.

She didn't stink of fear, was all he could think. Everyone feared him. Everyone. Even Him, even the one who searched. She smelled of horse, sweat, and something sweet. No fear.

He snarled, and she wrapped one hand over his muzzle. Sheer astonishment stopped his growls. Just how stupid was she?

"Shh." The words blended into the music she was making, and he realized that her humming was pulling magic out of the ground around and beneath them. "Let me look."

He was as surprised at himself as he was at her when he let her do just that. He could have torn out her throat or broken her neck while she examined every inch of him. But he didn't—and he wasn't quite certain why not.

It wasn't that killing her would bother him. He'd killed a lot of people. But that was before. He didn't want to do that anymore. So perhaps that was part of it.

He knew she was trying to help him—but he didn't want help. He wanted to die.

Her magic swept over and around him, cushioning him. The wolf whined softly and relaxed, leaving the mage in him fully in charge for the first time since the illness had hit. Maybe even longer ago than that.

Her magic didn't work on the mage because he knew what it was—and, he admitted to himself, because it wasn't coercive magic. He was mage enough to read her intent. She didn't want the wolf to become a lapdog but only to relax.

But evidently helpful intent wasn't why he didn't kill her. Not the real reason. He hadn't been interested in anything in longer than he could remember, but she made him curious. He'd only ever met a practitioner of green magic, wild magic, once before. They hid from the humans in the land—if there were any still left. But here was one wearing the clothes of a mercenary.

She could pick him up—which surprised him because she didn't weigh much more than he did. But she couldn't hoist him high enough to reach the edge of the trap, so she set him down again.

"Going to need some help," she told him, and clambered to the top. She almost didn't make it out of the pit herself; if it had been round, she wouldn't have.

When she departed and took her magic with her, it left him bereaved—as if someone had covered him with a blanket, then removed it. And only when she left did he realize that her music had deadened his pain and soothed him, despite his being a mage on his guard against it.

He heard the horse move and the sound of leather and something heavy hitting the ground. The horse approached the pit and stopped.

When the mercenary who could do green magic hopped back into his almost grave, she had a rope in her hand.

He waited for the wolf to stir as she tied him in a makeshift harness that somehow managed to brace his bad leg. But the wolf waited as meekly as a lamb while she worked. When he was trussed up to her satisfaction, she climbed back out.

"Come on, Sheen," she told someone. Possibly, he thought, it was the horse.

The trip out of the hole was not pleasant. He closed his eyes and let the pain take him where it would. When he lay on the ground at last, she untied him.

Freed at last, he lay where he had fallen, too weak to run. Maybe too curious as well.

Chapter One
Four Years Later

Aralorn paced, her heart beating with nervous energy.

It had seemed like a good idea at the time. She intended to sneak in as a servant—she was good at being a servant, and people talked in front of servants as if they weren't there at all. But then there had been that slave girl, freshly sold to the very Geoffrey ae'Magi whose court Aralorn was supposed to infiltrate and observe…;

Maybe if the slave girl hadn't had the gray-green eyes of the old races, eyes Aralorn shared, she wouldn't have given in to impulse. But it had been easy to free the girl and send her off with connections who would see her safely back to her home—proof that though she had lived in Sianim all these years, Aralorn was still Rethian enough to despise slavery. It was even easier to use the magic of her mother's people to rearrange her body and her features to mimic the girl and take her place.

She hadn't realized that slaves could be locked away until they were needed; she'd assumed she'd have work to do. It was well-known that the Archmage's passions were reserved for magic, and he seldom indulged in more fleshly pleasures. She'd figured that the girl had been purchased to do something—not sit locked in a room for weeks.

Aralorn had been just about ready to escape and try again using a different identity when she'd been brought up to the great hall of the ae'Magi's castle four days ago and put into the huge silver cage.

"She's to be decoration for the ball," said the servant who put her in the cage in response to another servant's question. "It won't be for a week yet, but he wanted her here so he could see the decorations and her at the same time."

Decoration. The ae'Magi had purchased a slave to decorate his great hall.

It had seemed out of character for the Archmage, Aralorn had thought. It took more than power to become the ae'Magi. The man or woman who wore that mantle of authority was, in his peers' eyes, a person of unassailable virtue. Only such a one could be allowed the reins to control all of the mages—at least all those west of the Great Swamp—so there was never again a wizard war. Purchasing a person in order to use her as decoration seemed…; petty for such a one as the ae'Magi. Or so she'd thought.

Four days ago.

Aralorn shivered. Her shoes made no sound on the marble beneath her feet, not that anyone would have been able to hear them over the music.

Beyond the silver bars of her cage, the great hall of the ae'Magi's castle was resplendent. By reputation, if not fact, the room was nearly a thousand years old, kept beautiful by good maintenance and judicious replacement rather than magic.

Though this room was the heart of the ae'Magi's home, by tradition, no magic was to be done here. This was the place the rulers of men conducted business with the ae'Magi, and the lack of magic proved to one and all that there was no magical coercion taking place. Aralorn now knew that the current ae'Magi didn't particularly care about following tradition, and coercion was something he used…; on everyone.

That first day, she'd been shocked when the stone beneath her feet vibrated with magic. She looked out at the room. Ten centuries old, or at least ten centuries of care and careful preservation by the finest craftsmen available. And the ae'Magi had saturated the stone with magic. No one would think to check, would they? And if they did, they'd just suspect another ae'Magi, an earlier one, because Geoffrey ae'Magi would never defy tradition.

This evening it was lavishly decorated for the pleasure of the people who danced lightly across the floor. Late-afternoon rays of sunlight streamed through the tear-shaped crystal skylights etched on the soaring ceilings. Pale pillars dripped down to the highly polished ivory-colored marble floor that reflected the jewel-like colors of the dancers' clothing.

Aralorn's cage sat on a raised platform on the only wall of the room that lacked a doorway. From that perch, she could observe the whole room and be observed in return. Or rather they could see the illusion that the ae'Magi had placed on the cage.

Instead of the tall, white-blond woman that the ae'Magi had purchased to decorate his great hall with her extraordinary beauty, observers would see a snowfalcon as rare and beautiful, the ae'Magi had told her, as his slave, but not so controversial. Some people, he'd told her, licking blood off his hands, disliked slavery, and he disliked controversy.

He'd decorated the room around his slave for his own amusement. Disguising her as a rare predator was simply a joke played upon the people who'd come here for entertainment.

A chime sounded, announcing new visitors. Aralorn hugged herself as the ae'Magi greeted his guests with a warm smile. He'd smiled that same smile last night while he'd killed a young boy and stolen his magic.

The stone floor had been red with blood, but it wiped up cleanly, and only someone able to sense magic might notice the pall that unclean death had left. Or not. The ae'Magi was the lord of mages, after all, and they could only use their powers to the extent he allowed.

She was scaring herself again—that was really not useful at all. Biting her lip, Aralorn gazed at the dancing nobles in an effort to distract herself. She matched names and countries to the dancers' faces with the ease that made her the valuable spy she was.

The ae'Magi had killed an old man, an old man without a spark of magic—human or green—about him and used the power of the death to turn the walls of the great hall a sparkling white. "Not an illusion," he'd told her. "It takes more power, and I don't like to use my own when I might need it at any time."

That had been the first night. On the second, he'd brought a man—one of his own guardsmen. With that blood, the ae'Magi had worked some magic so foul that the taste of it lingered on Aralorn's skin still.

The boy had been the worst. Only a child, and…;

Dozens of the rulers of the kingdoms of the Anthran Alliance were present. Some of them had been members of the Alliance for centuries, others were newer than that. The Empress of the Alliance wasn't here, but she was six, and her guardians kept a sharp eye on her lest any of her subjects decided to make her cousin the new empress instead. Just because they were allied didn't mean they were loyal subjects. The squabbles among the Alliance helped keep the coffers of Sianim full.

Gradually, she managed to replace the boy's dead eyes with dates and politics, but she still paced her cage restlessly. It wasn't just the horror of her discovery of exactly what kind of man held the power of the ae'Magi that kept her from sitting down—it was fear. The ae'Magi scared her to death.

Not the Masques you remember
By Litocracy
Okay, so, yes, I realize the original edition of "Masques" was flawed. The the writing was uneven, the transitions choppy, the larger events that drive the story were barely touched on, and there were some truly corney elements (not the least of which is the title--I guess they can't fix everything). Also, the cover was embarrassingly reminiscent of an 80s hairband album.

But I loved it. It was funny, it was romantic, it was melodramatic, it poked fun at itself. The single-minded focus on the relationship between the two main characters was perhaps both the greatest weakness and the greatest charm of what I'll now refer to as MasquesBeta.

Almost twice as long, the new Masques raises the stakes, fills in the gaps, eases the transitions, evens out the language, and clarifies the motivations of the side characters. What was stated as fact is now illustrated and described. What as implied is now made explicit. The result is a stronger book--but one that lacks the particular tumbling enthusiasm and unselfconscious obsessiveness of the original.

What hasn't changed are the characters. Aralorn has always stood out in my mind as the most memorable of Brigg's trademark tough-but-vulnerable female leads. Aralorn is a storyteller, a humorist, and a lover of information. She is independent, happy-go-lucky and self contained--although the traumatic events of the novel threaten to change that. The male lead, Wolf, meanwhile, remains the king of pathos, with a wry sarcastic bent. It's easy to see in these two characters and in the story itself, the influences of generic popular fantasy on a young author, but the germs of the characteristics, fantasies and themes that populate all Brigg's later work are equally apparent.

Too conclude, it good, it's different, it's worth checking out, and I'm excited (like way excited) for the sequel. But I still love the real Masques best.

More!

Aralorn is a shapeshifter - and a spy. However, she would be in deep trouble if it weren't for her friend Wolf. Having rescued Wolf years earlier, she only knew him as a wolf, until she happens upon a subversive plot on an assignment and finds him to be a powerful sorcerer and shapeshifter. Drawn into a plan to save the royalty of her country as well as the people from a powerful sorcerer, Aralorn and Wolf have to work together and trust each other - something that doesn't come easily to either one. This is a Great Story! I love Briggs' books.

Behind the Masques
By EA Solinas
Every great author has to begin somewhere -- and with Patricia Briggs, it started with "Masques." Briggs' first novel is pretty obviously a first novel, since she hadn't yet gotten a solid grip on her pacing and her characterization, but there are flickers of brilliance in her shapeshifting heroine and vivid writing.

Aralorn is a shapeshifting spy who gets sent on some various dangerous missions with her friend Wolf, even to spy on the lethal Geoffrey ae'Magi (who uses magic to make people adore him... kind of like a politician). When the crown prince Myr is accused of murdering one of his guards, she knows that the ae'Magi has somehow framed Myr -- and she and Wolf quickly join a small, ragtag rebellion that Myr is forming.

But Aralorn soon discovers that Wolf has some horrendous secrets in his past, some of which involve the ae'Magi and his bloody magic. With zombielike Uriah and a dragon waiting outside Myr's caves -- and the ae'Magi intent on capturing some of their party -- Aralorn and Wolf must find a way to defeat the magician before he gains control of the whole country.

When reading "Masques," it's pretty obvious that this was a very early Briggs work -- the narrative is rather choppy, the worldbuilding is fuzzy (what are these countries again?), and everything bounces from crisis to crisis at a breakneck pace. It's definitely not a bad novel, but it has all the earmarks of an early work, written before the author's rough edges had been rubbed off.

But there are hints of Briggs' future brilliance in the story -- her prose is vivid and colorful ("led by a small, grey fox with ageless, sea-green eyes"), and it has moments of dry humor ("Nothing's going to get us but ghosts and vampires and other nice things that feed on stupid people who ride in the woods after dark"). And she evokes some feelings of pure horror, such as when Aralorn sees an old buddy turned into one of the Uriah.

And the storyline slows down and becomes smoother in the book's second half, as Briggs works out various storylines (the ae'Magi's master plan) and weaves together the various subplots.

There's also a nice romantic subplot for Aralorn and Wolf, both of whom are oddities -- she's a young shapeshifting spy with a lot of guts and kindness, and he's a cynical, scarred magician with some nasty ties to the ae'Magi. There are also some nice supporting characters such as the magic-immune Myr, the dignified dragon, and a spattering of others.

"Masques" is a pretty immature piece of work, compared to Patricia Briggs' later fantasy books. But it's still an entertaining, action-packed little novel with a likable heroine.
