Rape-filled Romp
By Betty Coltrane
This is one of the original 1970s "bodice ripper" historical romances. I read it during my brief romance novel phase in high school ca. 1978. I enjoyed the action and historical setting, but even at that young age had trouble with the idea that any woman could fall in love with a man whose first act on meeting her is to rape her, and then repeatedly abandons her when she needs him most. What a catch! I also had issues with the fact that even though the heroine learns swordfighting so she will not be helpless any more, in the climactic scene when she is about to be raped for about the hundredth time in the book (by the most repulsive character in the book- a deranged ship's captain who abuses the heroine for months, then tosses her to his crew to be gang-raped), the best she can do is howl for the "hero" to come and save her.

I guess some readers will find this book uplifting, since of course there's a happy ending after the seemingly endless cavalcade of degradation the heroine endures. I thought it was pretty unrealistic even when I was 16... but then, I guess that's kind of the point of this genre of fiction.

They certainly don't make 'em like this anymore
By booker
Poor Elise Lesconflair! About to be married off to a fat German baron with lots o' money, she happens to swim in the nude as so many heroines do and gets herself raped by a wandering n'er-do-well who calls himself the Marquis de Pelessier. Family honor forces her to marry the man and her troubles only multiply from there. She finds out that the "Marquis" is really American Garth McClelland, who is always on a mission for his country when he's not seizing what he wants for himself. But, you know, those heroines just can't leave the asshats behind and they are in each other's blood whether they like it or not. The adventure is on and never lets up.

This is one of those old bodice rippers where the heroine is never given a break for hundreds of pages. Gang rape (and miscarriage) aboard a slave ship, framed for murder and sold into slavery by conniving enemies, continual rape by whoever gets their hands on her (including the "hero" McClelland), a near-hanging, a trial for murder, and branding. Her happier moments are spent pillaging ships at Jean Lafitte's side and being his mistress. In a book of jaw-dropping troglodytes, cads and weasels, he was the only true gentleman.

I'm sure I forgot a few things - after awhile, there was so much thrown at Elise that I lost track. Absurd hilarity, but in an enjoyable way. The coincidences and convenient plot thread convergences are ridiculous to the extreme. It was so amateurish and read like it was tossed off in a weekend that it was almost admirable - sort of like an Ed Wood movie. However, I'd rather read these old romances than the current stuff, which often bores me to tears. 4 stars.

FINALLY!!! THANK YOU :)
By Melissa
NOT you typical love story...and thank heavens for that. I am starting to realize a pattern; the older novels have got it right with the time period, (1970-1980's) and make for far more interesting books and help really build character. I am SO sick of boy meets girl, girl falls madly in love with boy, whom the boy is already so crazy in love with the girl, i.e. love at first sight...right. That only happens in the movies and for my hubby and I. Ok, it was second sight, but it was 15 yrs ago :) What happened to playing hard to get? building a story line? If you are someone who is enjoying the "newer" novels and like the love at first sight...this is NOT for you.

*SPOILER*
This book does contain rape (multiple times). Violence towards women. The H being with "other" women. If these are a problem for you in the books that you read, then I wouldn't recommend this book. But if you are one that can look past this and are sick to death of the new romance novel and....then this is a MUST get book. Remember, it is a book, the imagination of the author and the author is trying to keep the story as close to the time period as possible. Happy reading
