In this worthy follow-up to his well-received first novel, Revelation Space (2001), an especially intelligent far-future foray, British author Reynolds transmutes space opera into a noirish, baroque, picaresque mystery tale. Honor requires that Tanner Mirabel, a weapons specialist/bodyguard, track down and destroy the man who killed his boss. Tanner's pursuit takes him to the planet Yellowstone, where a nano-plague has mutated the glittering human cultural showcase of Chasm City into something bizarre, dark and extremely dangerous. He's aided or threatened or both, at different times by a host of human and not-quite-human characters. Relying on his own combat skills and hard-boiled attitude, Tanner keeps seeking revenge even though he begins to wonder why he's doing it, especially after intrusions of other people's memories lead him to suspect he's not who he thinks he is. Inventiveness and tone are Reynolds's strong points. Presented in a sustained burst of weirdness, the novel's details are consistently startling but convincing in context, and the loose ends eventually tie neatly together. The narrator's tough-guy stance works too, both as an expression of Tanner's personality and as a defensive reaction to the setting's intimidating strangeness. Think of a combination of the movie Blade Runner and one of Jack Vance's ironic SF adventure novels. If the ending feels a bit flat, that's probably inevitable after the exuberant display of wonders earlier.

There he confronts the city's strange, mutated inhabitants victims of a nanotechnological virus and ultimately comes up against his own worst fears and inner demons. The author of Revelation Space combines sf noir with technothriller in a dark vision of the future that belongs in most sf collections.

Professional soldier Tanner Mirabel chases the man who killed his boss and his boss' wife across space and time to the astounding Chasm City, a deep fissure where various mutants dwell in a hierarchical but profoundly decadent society. Hunting a murderer, Tanner is himself hunted in a game devised by Chasm City's bored aristocracy, who maintain immortality by using something called Dream Fuel. Tanner takes his licks but gets ever nearer his goal. Unfortunately, he has been infected with a virus by the Sky Haussmann cult. Haussmann was the human starfarer who led the first colonists to these new worlds. He was either a saint or a cruel criminal, but in any case Tanner begins to remember Haussmann's life as if it were his own, and then to wonder whether Haussmann's memories are his own. He finds out he isn't really Tanner Mirabel, and that his plot for revenge is a silly programmed instruction. Yet he follows through with his mission, discovering the almost nauseating secret of Dream Fuel and his true, multilayered identity in a tale suggesting, in the end, that the darkest secrets of the universe may be in the human heart. Excellent novel, with many twists.

This novel is set in the same universe as the "Revelation Space" trilogy but stands apart from them with a couple of references to events/people in the trilogy that helps to flesh out the universe just a touch.
This novel however is much 'smaller' in scale. It focuses on two characters and approximately three stories. One story takes place well in the past and has to do with events leading to the founding of the main character's planet. Another story has to do with the immediate past of the main character, providing his current motivation. His current motivation and plans make up the bulk of the novel, and involve him attempting to track down someone who killed people that the main character worked for and/or had an attachment to.
As a side element, he ends up in a location which underwent something called a 'Melding Plague' which did horrific things to almost all robotic/technological items including the buildings as well as the implants that the humans on the planet had inside them. This leads to my first niggling complaint about the book and one of the reasons it fails to get 5 stars from me. The back of the book, in my mind, oversells this aspect of the novel. While the city is interesting enough, you never really get the sense that it's quite the 'hell' that the blurb on the back promises. It feels more squalid, amoral and decadent than hellish. Also, the reason for the plague fits into one of the stories mentioned above, but it feels hastily done and occurs almost as a throwaway, and feels too convenient or too much of a coincidence.
I can't really go into much detail as to why I really liked this novel without giving anything away, but there are a number of twists that occur which make both the reader and the protagonist question some basic assumptions. What I enjoyed was that there was enough of a puzzle aspect that the reader could guess some of what was coming before the main character did. I also liked that some puzzles didn't have their answer explicitly spelled out, but let the reader realize the connection on their own.
The cast of characters is quite interesting, and generally each has their own voice. The descriptions of places and feelings are excellent. I did feel that the very end of the book didn't quite live up to the promise of the rest of the book, and found the main character to be a bit inconsistent compared to what we'd learned of him throughout the earlier parts of the novel.
I do recommend this novel strongly.

Well Written, Compelling Story & Characters - Minor Weak Spots

Despite a number of the negative comments by reviewers, I found the story very enjoyable - the milieu created by Reynolds is top-notch; certainly a viable setting for future stories.
The technologies are all completely reasonable and the whole background of the first colonies beyond our current solar system are simply wonderful (and sadly realistic).
The characters are much better drawn than in Reynolds first book, Revelation Space, and the stories have a much tighter weave.
That said, there were several points in the book that did not measure up to the rest of the story, and the end was good...but I felt something was missing, a certain flair or something; it was almost too neatly wrapped up. However, the overall story, setting and characters make the book definitely worth while.
If you have not tried Alastair Reynolds' books yet, this might be one to consider first.

Chasm City is Deep!

Alastair Reynolds' Chasm City is an excellent sequel to his first book "Revelation Space" (pls see my review). Chasm though a sequel, can definitely be read on it's own and has a much tighter and deeper plot. Revelation Space got too jumbled in the end but was enjoyable nonetheless as it was a groundbreaking work. I would have liked to learn more what had become of the frozen captain aboard the Nostalgia For Infinity. In Chasm, the setting is the planet Yellowstone where there is a melding nano-plague virus slowly affecting all the implants and machines (as in the first book). Our hero, a man named Tanner Mirabel has traveled light years seeking revenge. Searching for the ever elusive Argent Reivich, the man that killed the woman he loved along with his best friend. Meanwhile, the virus has taken hold of Chasm city, once considered the jewel of the galaxy. Now after several years of onslaught by the plague, Chasm city takes on nightmarish proportions. Built in a gigantic chasm where the rich live in a fantastic canopy of dizzying heights and architecture. The poor live in the lower strata, called the mulch and are hunted by the rich for idle sport. The story also dovetails with the past in a very interesting way regarding the founder of Sky's Edge, the enigmatic Sky Hausmannn and his rise to power (which is a story in itself). There are many interesting parallels in the story to the science and politics of our times that will pique your interest. The issues of gentics, memory and identity throughout the story are intriguing to the point of making Total Recall look like a walk in the park. Hey one day, I'd like to be cryogenically frozen too!!!
