MAGIC BLEEDS is one of those pivotal books that can either make or break the series. Vital changes take place.  The enemy Kate faces in this book is the most powerful we've written to date.  When Kate shattered the blood sword during Midnight Games, she knew there would be consequences.  Well, the consequences arrive and smash her life to pieces.  She loses everything and her world will never be the same.

In so many ways, this is a fight or flight book.  Kate's opponent has been called the City Eater, and the moniker is well deserved.  The situation is desperate.  Kate knows she is outclassed and underpowered. The City Eater has centuries of experience, commanding the forces of nature and deadly disease.  Kate would have preferred facing anything else, a mythical monster, a legend, a god, but no, her opponent is much, much worse.  The City Eater is family.  This enemy has no mercy, no compassion, and no weakness.

Kate has to stand against her bloodline and probably die, or run, abandoning everyone she cares about, and live to fight another day. It very clear just how far she has to go in learning her powers and she has no time to do it.

Magic Frenzy - Humor, Edge-of-seat Tension and Scintillating Combat Action

The husband-wife writer duo have come out with the best book in the series! I thought it couldn't be possible after the Midnight Games in Magic Strikes but I am simply ecstatic to be proved wrong!

Kate Daniel's secret identity is swiftly unraveling, her relationship with Curran is on rocky volcanic plasma, her shape-shifter friends are in extreme danger since a very special big baddie has come to town to target them. And her Order boss doesn't want her to help or assist them. To mention anything more would be a spoiler...

I love the combat in Magic Bleeds, which by itself is good enough to rate the book 5 stars. The tension is ratcheted up several notches, the battle scenes are extremely vivid and unlike the earlier books, Kate is tested to the limits of her sword mastery - no easy monsters here. For the folks who don't care much action, the humor and witty repartee that has been a feature of these books since the beginning continue to make you laugh uncontrollably at times (don't read in public or you'll get strange looks). Yet the story is much darker and no character has it easy. This book truly begins the final countdown with Roland.

A fantasy series with no boring filler book! To hit the sweet-read jackpot again and again like this takes amazing skill and dedication on part of the authors.

Wouldn't you love to meet Kate Daniels?

SYNOPSIS: Kate Daniels is sent to investigate a fight at the Steel Horse, a bar in the area bordering the territories of the shapeshifters and the vampires. Not exactly a top notch tourist spot, but a regular local hangout. What she finds when she arrives is magic in a form she's never encountered before. It takes a lot of investigating to find that this magic is worked by someone every bit as powerful as Kate is herself. The bad news is, Kate has stumbled upon a relative of hers and only one of them can survive in the crumbling Atlanta that remains since the war between magic and technology started. If Curran (Beast Lord of Atlanta) hadn't stood her up for their dinner date Kate would gladly call on him for help with this problem. As it is, she might just kill him the next time she sees him.

OPINION: I would just love to meet Kate Daniels. Ilona Andrews continues to write Kate in such a realistic way that I feel I could actually talk to her, argue with her, kid around with her, but never, ever fight with her. What makes this series of stories so outstanding for me is the absolute humanity I see in these characters. And since some of them are only partly human, that's quite a feat for these authors. I enjoyed the added twist of having one of Kate's blood relatives show up here. All through the previous three books we have been teased with references to Kate's blood and shown to what extraordinary lengths she will go to keep her blood from falling into the wrong hands. Well, now we understand why. I applaud the way the personalities of Kate and Curran have been blended, shaped and molded to allow these two incredibly strong characters to have a relationship that feels real and right. I know that this couple will only become more complex and interesting as their bonding solidifies.

So why, you are asking, did I give this book 4 stars instead of 5? Well, because there were so very many demons that Kate had to face that it all began to blend together for me after the third or fourth or fifth huge battle-to-the-death scene. I was actually tempted to skim ahead through the fighting. Now, that's a great big no-no so I resisted, but the fact remains that I was tempted. The author says in the acknowledgments section that this was a very difficult book to write. I can certainly understand that after having read it and seen how complex it is. Still, for me, maybe tackling seven demons and the demon relative multiple times was a tad too many fight scenes.

RECOMMENDATION: As far as I'm concerned, this book is a must-read for Urban Fantasy devotees. As stated on the cover, this is the fourth book in the series. Quite honestly, I would suggest to a friend that they start with the first book and read them in order. This book contains wonderful background information, a very good attempt has been made to cover all the past history revealed in the previous books. But there is just no substitute for reading an entire novel to get your information first hand as the author unfolds it. So, for me, starting with number one and then galloping on to number two, then diving directly into number three will have you on the razor's edge of anticipation for number four. Just plan on not leaving the house, or talking on the phone, or getting any work done. You will be completely engaged in a magic world full of magical characters. Evidently Penguin Group (USA) is betting on that too. They have placed a money back guarantee on you liking this book. You might send yours back, but I'll fight anybody who tries to take mine!

This book was another great book in the series of Kate Daniels. Ilona Andrews continues to astonish. Kate Daniels will continue to grow as a character and also to grow in the minds and imaginations of the reader. This book blew all other books out of the water. I will continue to read this book all times of the day or night. Ilona Andrews, I thank you for the content of this book.

but it has been my reading that a good book is a good book

What a charming book. Some reviewers have described it as YA, but it has been my reading that a good book is a good book, and I prefer not to put any age labels on it. This book is an absolute delight. I would love to see a sequel one day, but as it's been quite a while already since its publication, I guess I hope in vain.

A dreamy fairy tale for all ages...

A beautiful story with a fairy tale feel and a bit of romance, this has become one of my favorite books. This tale tells the story of a young woman, Coriel, the bastard child of a now dead nobleman, who is torn between the world of riches and power in the Regent's court and a simple life as the trainee of her grandmother, a small village healer. Every summer she lives as a noble at Castle Auburn with her beautiful and loving half sister, Elisandra, who is affianced to Prince Bryan, the most adored young men in the Kingdom. Bryan, the young orphan prince, is just getting his first tastes of power, and likes it very much.
The story opens with most of the main characters embarking on a hunt for Aliora, a kind of very gentle and kind fairy folk who are used as slaves by the nobles. Coriel is a young 14-year old tomboy suffering from her first hopeless crush--on Bryan, the reckless and dashing young prince. The Prince's cousin, slim and serious Kent, keeps a watchful eye on Corie, and tries to curb his cousin's recklessness. Corie's Uncle Jaxon, the greatest Aliora hunter in the kingdom, herds the youngsters along, and Roderick, a young, handsome guardsman provides security. Only beautiful Elisandra is kept at home by her mother Greta, in order to avoid scandal.
The story follows these innocent children as they change and grow into adults. Some learn wisdom, some fall in love, one learns evil, and one will die, before the tale is told. And we see all this through Corie's eyes, overshadowed by her innocence until the blinders are removed and she finally grows up and sees the reality of life in Castle Auburn.

Amazing storyteller

This is a wonderful story of a girl named Corie. Corie is the illegitimate daughter of a lord. After he passes away her uncle Jaxon decides to take care of her. He works out an agreement with her grandmother that she will spend the summer at Castle Auburn and the rest of the year with her grandmother learning "witchcraft" (really, she is just a healer). Most of the story takes place at the castle though, where her "grooming" takes place in hopes that she will have a politically placed marriage. The book was beautifully written and very easy to get into. The story was great and I was happy to have found it. If you enjoyed The Goose Girl or Seer and the Sword then you will like this book

Tunneling Across Alternate Realities

In one reality, "The Accidental Time Machine" is a fun time travel story in which a naive underachiever becomes the recipient of what would be the Holy Grail of physics. As his journeys through time progress, he matures up, throws off his hedonism and becomes practically noble. This is a metaphor for much of recent political history, although this correlation may itself be accidental. Doesn't matter; one could read this same lesson into David Jerrold's "The Man Who Folded Himself", which wouldn't be necessary--Jerrold's book was also just plain fun to read, a fascinating exploration into the serpentine repercussions of time travel. The trouble for science-fiction writers is that physicists keep coming up with new theories, theories that can render older time travel stories as obsolete as 64K RAM. I think that Poul Anderson understood this with his "Time Patrol" novels, having them rely more upon story and action rather than science.

In another reality come the more sophisticated concepts of hard science, such as Gregory Benford's "Timescape", in which authors use the medium to explore current theories. Haldeman is looking at p-branes with this book, tunneling across alternate realities in order to allow time travel without the attending paradoxes. Many of the unanswered questions and loose ends that have been commented upon by reviewers are bound up in parallel universes, which Haldeman leaves as self evident without going into greater explanation.

"The Accidental Time Machine" struggles under both of these realities. The story arc flattens out much too soon, failing to grow in depth toward the conclusion. The science is fascinating but not fully formed, so doesn't carry the book either. The book was a fun read but not a sophisticated read, certainly not on par with most of Haldeman's work. Despite the seemingly finite conclusion, however, there is much room for a sequel or two, not only in the science but also in the development of the central characters, especially the underdeveloped Martha. Here's jumping into the future to see if it happens...

This book was a lot of fun to read...

I won't bother writing a summary of the story, as there are plenty of those to choose from. I'll just tell you what I liked about the book (and what I didn't), and let you decide whether or not you think it is worth reading (hint: IT IS!).

The book was fast paced, easy to read, and a heck of a lot of fun. I didn't want to put it down (and indeed, finished it in 4 hours). The characters don't get a lot of treatment, but they are still given enough personality that you will find yourself rooting for certain outcomes as they move throughout the story (and time).

This is not hard science fiction. You will not get a detailed description of how the time machine works (although, there is some discussion of temporal theory, paradoxes, multiverses, etc.). However, you will get an engaging story that makes you wish the book were at least twice as long. And you'll definitely find yourself wishing that you could travel with Matt Fuller (the protagonist) as he makes his jumps. Each time he presses the button (which makes him jump), you'll get excited.

The author takes more than a few pokes at religion (Christianity in particular), and while I don't care for it, I've become rather used to it in Science Fiction novels. But there's nothing too offensive... and besides, he pokes fun at the scientific profession as well.

Besides that, my only other complaints were that he left a lot of things unexplained (including a major, major loose end), and wrapped the book up far too quickly (puts many other dues ex machina endings to shame). The book could have gone on for another 200 pages easily (and maintained interest)...

Overall, I would recommend this book for light reading. It's certainly not masterful, but it's very human. You'll like it, I promise!

Deliberate humor, detached protagonist

Let's start with the novel's hero, Ph.D. candidate Fowler. Fowler accidentally discovers a time machine that, luckily for him, distracts him from a relationship that's gone awry. The thing I liked about Fowler's character is that he has a "detached" point of view that reminded me of Neal Stephenson's characters. The drawback to Fowler's character is that there is not a solid emotional attachment to his ex-girlfriend. Haldeman, while a great author in general, slips into the forbidden "tell don't show" trope here.

Fowler's plight through the future, though, did intrigue me. In fact, most of the future worlds he encounters could serve as a foundation for a novel itself.

The most compelling future was the reversion of New England to its Puritan roots after the "Second Coming" of Jesus.

The least compelling future was the odd e-Bay like world of an AI-version of Los Angeles. While cities like L.A. are often used as "infinite cities", I would've preferred New York or London (perhaps for romantic reasons if nothing else).

The best thing about the novel, though, is Haldeman's deliberate sarcasm and humor. Combined with very tight prose, he constructed a page-turner based off the humor that kept me, well, turning paging.

If we could rate novels on a 10-point scale, I'd given THE ACCIDENTAL TIME MACHINE a 7/10. But, since I enjoyed it, I "rounded up" and gave it 4 stars.

The Penultimate Dune

In Heretics of Dune, Frank Herbert takes us fifteen hundred years after the previous book and well over four thousand years beyond the original trilogy. The God Emperor is gone, the Atreides clan has faded from its former prominence, and, as always, there are a number of groups struggling for dominance.
With so many specialized types of humans and prolonged lifespans, it is not overly surprising that civilization has not undergone any truly drastic changes since Leto II's transformation. This book focuses on the Bene Gesserit, the sisterhood who have grand designs for humanity. Among others jockeying for power are the Tleilaxu who have mastered biology in other fashions. More dangerous still are the Honored Matres, a powerful organization that is a dark doppleganger of the Bene Gesserit.
Of course, there is another Duncan Idaho who is a pawn in all this scheming, but the most interesting characters are Miles Teg - a master warrior called out of retirement to mentor Duncan - and Sheeanna, a young girl who can command the sand worms of Rakis (the former Arrakis). Sheanna is probably the most refreshing character this series has had in a while; she behaves like a real child, and isn't a grand schemer unlike every other character.
This is still good science fiction. Dune/Rakis/Arrakis is not as central as in previous books, and the role of sex is much more important, at times even overshadowing the spice. At first, the story is a bit disorienting - there are no familiar characters until Duncan appears - but things pick up quickly enough. All the Dune books conclude with a new order imposed on the galaxy and this book is no exception. What that new order is, however, is for the reader to find out.
The Dune series is not always easy to read, but it is a complex and worthwhile classic of science fiction. For those who have enjoyed the previous books, this book will continue the pleasure.

great sci-fi

I'm currently reading Book 6 so Heretics is still fresh on my mind! I was initially disappointed that the story basically started fresh many centuries after Book 4, with only Leto II's lingering "Golden Path" still haunting the Bene Gesserit and no other characters present from that time except Duncan Idaho. BTW, this book and the next focus entirely on the Bene Gesserit.
After a couple chapters, however, I was hooked into the story and intrigued by the nature of the violently destructive Honored Matres returned from The Scattering. What are they after? I'm about halfway through Book 6 and that question still hasn't been answered. Duncan is a child for most of this novel, so the main male "hero" is the veteran general Miles Teg. There are a few Bene Gesserit protagonists, but since they're all so crafty and cunning it's hard to call them heroines. Let's just call them "the good side" while the Honored Matres are most definitely evil.
Herbert does a wonderful job endowing each Bene Gesserit with a unique personality yet also that infernal arrogance. There isn't a single Bene Gesserit that doesn't feel a sense of superiority to all non-sisters and complete control of almost any situation. Herbert chalks this attitude up to the countless memories of Other Lives and it is very believable.
An excellent read with an awesome ending. Several scenes of intense action and classic Herbert descriptions of combat and the "prana-bindu" reflexes. Go Miles!

Kind of disappointed...

First off, I own almost all William C Dietz's books and enjoy the action and character development. I was looking forward to "When Duty Calls" and bought it as soon as it was available. I hate to say I'm disappointed. For some reason, it seems he has decided the only people who now read him book are teenagers and has started italicizing words like slam and bam and whoosh so we can understand that it's a sound. Parts of the book are written on such an elementary level I was kind of insulted. I guess I can't follow a plot without one of the characters explaining "Oh, I understand! Another Phase in the War

When Duty Calls (2008) is the eighth SF novel in the Legion series, following When All Seems Lost. The initial work in this sequrnce is Legion of the Damned.

In the previous volume, the legion raided Jericho to free President Nankool. Vice President Jakow was very surprised at Nankool's return.

In this novel, Antonio Santana is now a Captain, commanding Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st REC. The Legion officer was promoted after the Jericho raid.

Liam Quinlan is a Major, commanding the 2nd Battalion, 1st REC. He is Santana's immediate superior. He doesn't appear to like Santana.

Marcott Nankool is President of the Confederacy of Sentient Beings.

Christine Vanderveen is a Confederation diplomat who had been on Jericho with President Nankool. She was recently promoted to FSO-2 for her actions during their capture.

In this story, Santana leads his largely untried company on a raid against a Ramanthian presence on Oren IV. Intelligence asserts that the Bugs are storing materiel on the planet to use as a forward supply point in their war with the Confederation. His company is dropping on the world in an assault boat.

The copilot detects extra heat from their target, a deserted mine. Santana decides to land a mile from the facility. Quinlan tries to countermand that decision, but Santana feigns communication problems and the copilot cuts the link. The Ramathian commander is disappointed as the boat bypasses the landing pad within the facility, but shuffles his forces to oppose the Legion troops.

Santana takes the mine, but is forced to retreat as the Ramathians blow demolition charges. Santana loses four troopers in the mine, but the rest get out in time. The cave-in crushes the remaining Ramathians.

Then the Ramathians invade Gamma-014, a largely agricultural world. Most of the armed forces and police are destroyed in the initial attack, but the Bugs fail to hit a cold weather training base. Colonel Six arms the troops at the base and sets out to wage a guerrilla style war against the Bugs.

Meanwhile, President Nankool is on Alpha-001 in the Clone Hegemony to negotiate an alliance. The Clone Hegemony has been neutral in the war between the Ramathians and the Confederacy. Yet Nankool hopes that they will join the largely human Confederacy against the insectile Ramathians.

The Clone Alphas are reluctant to ally with the Confederacy. Then the Clone underground grabs Christine and takes her to a subterranean base. They offer to join the Confederacy if the Confederation recognizes their new government.

Christine takes this message back to President Nankool, but he is not willing to take the chance. As the negotiations are beginning, word of the Gamma-014 invasion reaches the Clone leaders. Then the uprising begins on Alpha-001 and elsewhere within the Clone Hegemony.

This tale puts the Confederacy into an even more tenuous position. They send ships and troops to Gamma-014, but the Bugs attack within the Confederacy. Now President Nankool has a two-front war and even fewer resources with which to fight.

The Confederacy is winning battles, but losing the war. Maybe the next volume will turn the tide. Read and enjoy!

Recommended for Dietz fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of armed combat, diplomatic intrigue, and political upheavals.

Most action packed of the series

Think ... Bridges @ Toko-Ri, War of the Worlds, Battle @ Chosin reservoir, Dunkirk, Planet wide civil war, Fredericksburg, Road Warrior and a small sprinkling of nukes ...

That collection of combined scenarios seems absurd, but Dietz accomplishes the interesting combination and more. Add to the mix, the 'Legion of the Damned' archive of characters coming and unexpectedly departing and you get the best installment of the series.

I was instructed in War College strategy and tactics. This installment is of such technical quality, that it would provide an edge to its readers as the best set pieces of strategy and tactics drawn from Sun Tzu, Hannibal, Genghis Khan, Wellington, Sherman & Grant, von Clausewitz, Alanbrooke, or von Moltke to name a few. For the military mind, it's a box of chocolates.

I couldn't put it down.

Entertaining, but....

First, before I offend some Steven Brust fans, I did find this novel reasonably entertaining. But geez, I wanted to like it a whole lot more than I did. I loved the concept - a series of books about Vlad Taltos, an assassin on the world of Dragaera. Vlad is an "easterner", or human, who is a member of one of the Dragaeran "Houses" - the Jhereg. Each of the succeeding books is titled with one of the other "Houses" and presumably is a more in depth look at that "House".
Sounds great (and it wasn't bad as I said), but I find Brust's style lacking in some of the elements I enjoy most. So far I've read two Brust novels (this one and To Reign in Hell) and I find that he puts all his energies into two things - an elaborate plot resolution and, most importantly, snappy dialogue repartee; LOTS of snappy repartee. I found myself begging for a description of almost anything - his wife, his assistant, his office, his apartment, Castle Black - anything. Most of his descriptions are reserved for his knives and daggers. He also creates some very intriguing characters, but leaves them largely with little descriptive meat on their bones. So, while I'll probably read more novels in this series, I'm in no rush to do so.

Introducing Vlad Taltos

Jhereg is the first book in the "Vladimir Taltos" series, and introduces the character and his world. It is a highly entertaining comic fantasy.

The first part of the book includes a brief account of Vlad's boyhood, and the story of how he acquires the live Jhereg egg which hatches into his familiar and constant companion Loiosh. That's Loiosh on the front cover of this book hatching from his egg, he's a small intelligent flying reptile something like a miniature dragon, and he also appears on the cover of the great majority of the other books of the series. He has a telepathic link to Vlad, and one of the hallmarks of the series is the constant mental exchange of banter and insults between Vlad and Loiosh.

All the Vlad Taltos stories jump around in time a lot, and and after the introduction "Jhereg" jumps ahead approximately seven years to the main action of the book, leapfrogging three of the subsequently written books and making this first book in the series also the fourth in chronological sequence.

The "Vlad Taltos" novels, and the same author's or "Khaavren" romances (see below), are all set in a world of magic, where there are several intelligent species, including two types of men and women. Humans like ourselves, and Vlad, are usually referred to as "Easterners," the other type of men and women call themselves humans but are usually referred to in the books as "Dragaerans" or occasionally as Elves.

Dragaerans are taller than humans, live 2,000 years or so, and then after death are eligible for reincarnation provided they have not annoyed a God too much or had their soul destroyed by a "Morganti" weapon or a "Great Weapon."

Morganti weapons are used between mortals when they are really angry with someone because they don't just kill you, but destroy your soul. "Great Weapons," are rare and especially powerful Morganti weapons, of which legend has it there are exactly seventeen, and which can even kill Gods.

All Dragaerans and some humans/Easterners belong to one of seventeen "Great Houses" named after animals of the fantasy world in which the novels are set. Nine of the ten novels to date featuring Vlad Taltos, including "Jhereg" have the same name as one of these great houses, usually also featuring a member of that house in a prominent role: if Steven Brust is planning to write a novel for each house we are about half way through the series.

Most of the great houses also have a preferred occupation. For examples: "Dragons" and "Dzurlords" are soldiers, "Tecla" are peasants, "Chreotha" are merchants, "Orcas" are sailors, pirates or bankers, and "Jhereg" are gangsters or assassins.

Most members of House Jhereg are also involved in "the organisation" which controls organised crime. The hero, Baronet Vladimir Taltos, is an assassin and minor sorcerer, a member of House Jhereg, and at the time of this book, a crimelord running an area for "the organisation." Vlad's late father spent most of the family fortune buying a minor title in House Jhereg, which is almost the only way a human (Easterner) can advance in the empire, and Vlad has inherited the title.

Taltos narrates these stories with a wonderful dry wit which is one of the best aspects of the novels.

The books are not written in a regular chronological sequence: for example, the fourth novel, "Taltos" is a prequel set before the main action of any of the others. And most of the books contain either flashbacks to much earlier events, references to much later events, or both. In my opinion you will get most out of these books if you read them in something close to the "official" order, but there is an alternative view which says that they are best read in chronological sequence.

If you are interested in the Vlad Taltos series, my recommendation would be to start with either this first book written, "Jhereg" or the chronologically first book, "Taltos."

If you enjoy the Taltos novels, you might be interested in another sequence of books which Steven Brust has set a few centuries earlier. These are something between a parody and a homage to the novels of Alexandre Dumas. He's called them the "Khaavren Romances" after the central character of the first two novels, who corresponds very closely to D'Artagnan. Obviously none of the human characters overlap, but some of the Dragaerans do: Khaavren himself and Vlad briefly meet in the book "Tecla" and Khaavren also has a sort of offstage cameo in the Vlad Taltos book "Orca." Two of the major characters in the Taltos novels, Sethra Lavode and Lord Morrolan of Castle Black, are also important enough in the Khaavren novels to have books named after them.

The five Khaavren romances, in sequence, are

1) "The Phoenix Guards" (equivalent to "The Three Musketeers")
2) "Five Hundred Years After" (equivalent to "Twenty years after")

Then a trilogy "The Viscount of Adrilankha" (e.g. "The Count of Monte Cristo") which comprises

3) The Paths of the Dead
4) The Lord of Castle Black
5) Sethra Lavode

Overall I found both the "Taltos" novels and the "Khaavren Romances" very entertaining: I recommend both series and this book.

Is that a dragon on your shoulder?

Remember when fantasy used to be fun? The genre wasn't full of these door-stopper, epic fantasies that go on for thousands of pages with just a little bit of a point. Sure, those can be good now and then, and I actually like a few series, but I miss the times when you could pick up a fairly short novel and have a laugh or two. Yes, Discworld is still out there, and I believe Robert Asprin is still writing the "Myth" books, but what about something new?

Back in 1983, Steven Brust introduced us to Vlad Taltos, an assassin, a "mob" boss (or the Dragaeran equivalent of one), and a human fish out of water. He's the man with the dragon-like creature (called a Jhereg) on his shoulder, and he's good at what he does. The first book of the series was called Jhereg, and gave us our first peek at Vlad's world. Having finally read this book, I can truly say that it is great. Brust's characterizations shine through and his wit is infectious. I've had this series recommended to me many times, and I regret waiting so long to start it.

Vlad is a human in a Dragaeran world, a citizen of the Empire whose father came from the East. In fact, his father spent most of the family's money so that he could buy a title in the Empire so Vlad would have a standing in it. The House, Jhereg, is more "mob"-like than the rest of the houses, and Vlad quickly moves up the ranks to have his own territory. He's also made himself one of the best assassins out there, but he's quite surprised when another boss, called "The Demon," hires him to kill one of the Jhereg's higher-ups who has absconded with a great deal of the House's money. One condition: Vlad must do it quickly, before word gets out that somebody has done this to the Jheregs. There's also one hitch: the target in question has taken refuge in Castle Black, as a guest of Morrolan the Dragonlord. Morrolan's honour is strong enough that, once he has welcomed somebody as a guest, the guest is under his protection, no matter what. Vlad also finds that the case is even more complicated, reaching all the way back to the beginning of the Dragaeran Houses. Can Vlad succeed in time, without getting killed in the process?

The world Brust has created is very imaginative, and he doles out the information pieces at a time. Jhereg begins with a little about Vlad's childhood and then how he earned his Jhereg side-kick, Loiosh, and then gets right into the action. We slowly learn about Dragaeran society, how the Houses work, and how they interact. All of Vlad's relationships are already established, including his wife Cawti (the next book, Yendi, details how they met), so Brust takes us along for the ride, and we have to absorb everything as we go. I liked that, as Brust is always clear enough that I was never really lost (though how the honour system works sometimes eluded me).

Vlad is the narrator of the series, and thus his characterization is the most important. Thankfully, Brust nails him beautifully, giving us a likable protagonist (who, occasionally, kills people for either money or because they crossed him, but that's neither here nor there). The dialogue, especially between Vlad and Loiosh, is wonderful. I did get a bit tired of him telling Loiosh to "shut up" after a sarcastic comment, but it seems to be their shtick so I'd better get used to it. I also loved Kragar, Vlad's henchman, and would really like to know more about his story. He has a good relationship with his boss, but the funniest part about him is how he's so unnoticeable. The running gag in this series is how somebody's looking for Kragar and he's right there sitting in front of them, without anybody having seen him come in. That joke may get old after a while, but I still find it hilarious each time it happens.

Jhereg's plot is very lean, with no extraneous material taking up space and filling up the page count. Vlad's dilemma is interesting, as he has to try and find a way to get Mellar out of Morrolan's house without using magic, and without killing him in Castle Black. When the plot expands even more and the risk of a great war between the Jheregs and the Dragons because of this killing rears its ugly head, the plot gets even more intense. Vlad's loyalties are tested as he is good friends with (and works for) Morrolan, so he will not carry out any assassination that will hurt Morrolan's honour, which unfortunately makes Vlad a target for assassination as well. The twists and turns in the story make it unpredictable, and the way sorcery and witchcraft (in this world, there is a difference), along with some of the magical Great Weapons that are about, makes the ending unpredictable. Thankfully, Brust doesn't pull the ending out of left field, though, setting it up nicely beforehand.

My only fault with this book, and it's my own preference more than anything else, is that I'm getting tired of the "let's create an intricate plan that involves lots of people, sit down and be briefed on what everybody needs to do, then carry it out" sequences. They just annoy me. I call it the "Let's have a meeting and then execute the plan" formula. Always, one thing (maybe two) goes wrong, they have to improvise, and they end up succeeding anyway. It's so predictable as to be maddening. Then again, this book is over 20 years old, so I'll grant it a waiver in this case.

Jhereg is an excellent beginning to the Vlad Taltos series. If you like your fantasy a little fun, this would be a great one to pick up.

Mostly NON-robot short stories

I expected this to be a collection of robot stories because of the title, but only two are robot stories. They are the first two, and the first one is also a story from _I, Robot_ (which I just re-read). The second one is "Robot Dreams" from which the book takes its title, and it is another Susan Calvin robot story like those from _I, Robot_ but was written in the mid-'80s (_I, Robot_ was written 30 years earlier). It is in the same mold with the earlier stories, but with a nod to advancing technology (small computers, for instance).
Many other stories in this collection center on "Multivac," an immense computer. The name is an obvious derivative of UNIVAC, a large, vacuum-tube based computer of the early 1950s. UNIVAC became famous for predicting that Eisenhower would win the 1952 election based on early returns (against pundit predictions that Stevenson would win). That led directly to one story, "Franchise," which takes the ability to sample a small number of votes to predict a total election outcome and drives the idea to an absurd (but nevertheless interesting) extreme.
There are a variety of other stories, from ones dealing with beings without bodies to one talking about an alien medical investigator who has come to Earth to find out more about a disease. All are worth the read, and some are truly fascinating and end in very unexpected ways.
Ralph McQuarrie provides the cover illustration and several others for individual stories; they are of the style familiar to anyone who has seen original art from "Star Wars" (which he worked on). Asimov's introduction is amusing; he explains what he got right in predicting the future--and what he got spectacularly wrong. He discusses this with respect to both stories in the book (Multivac, for instance) and to other books and stories he had written decades earlier.
All in all, this book was a fun read.

"Dragonhaven" or "How I went crazy from teenage boy patois"

In my opinion, Robin McKinley's greatest strength as a writer is her ability to make the mundane magical or portentous. Her voice is lyric and moving. She used it very successfully to elevate some of her more prosaic, slower-moving books from uninspired to elegant. Her voice is what saved both Rose Daughter and Spindle's End from mundanity, and what made Sunshine and her Damar books such classics.

That voice is missing from this book.

Ms. McKinley, for the first time in her career (as far as I can see), decided to write from the perspective of a teenaged boy. I believe she really struggled to capture the rhythm and honesty of her main character. She adopted a rushed, breathless teenage boy patois scattered with adjectives like "freaking" and "cheezing" that she successfully maintains throughout the ENTIRE book.

Unfortunately.

Her story, although slow in parts, was beautiful and well-drawn. (That's why I gave the book three stars.) However, my pleasure in the story was corrupted by my hatred of her language. It distracted terribly.

Although I am a devoted McKinley fan, I probably would not have purchased this book if I'd known what I was in for.

Pretty OK

I'm skipping the plot summary, as other reviews have already done it quite adequately. I'm going to discuss the writing style, the source of a lot of the negativity in other reviews.

McKinley seems to require a bit of cultural distance from her subjects. When she was living in the States, her books tended to have a European feel to them: either the British colonial mood of the Damar series or the fairytale settings of books like Spindle's End or Deerskin. Her move to the UK resulted in the American voices of Sunshine and Dragonhaven.

The voices of the narrators in Sunshine and Dragonhaven are very similar: intelligent, observant, sarcastic, and introspective to the point of being self absorbed. These traits worked pretty well as the foundation of Rae's character. They work less well as the basis of a teenaged male character. Adolescent boys are wired differently than adolescent girls: less interested in extended bouts of navel gazing, less prone to dramatics, and generally more simple and direct creatures. The voice of Jake is just a little off, a bit too ruminative and insightful for his years. There's also the occasional bit of out of place British slang.

That being said, I didn't find it unreadable. I think the book compares pretty favorably to a lot of other fantasy, especially that written in earlier decades. Our standards have risen. The world of Dragonhaven is as intricately developed as any of McKinley's others. Even as one of her lesser works, it's still far stronger than a lot of other authors' best. Save it for a light summer read and enjoy.

the ordinary becomes extraordinary; or does the extraordinary become ordinary?

About a page and a half into Dragonhaven, I put the book down and thought to myself, "She can't really keep up this annoying first person narration the whole book, can she?" When I think of Robin McKinley, I think of measured, deeply beautiful, polished prose - with a kind of intense, crystalline quality that has always lent itself well to the fairy-tale aspect of her stories. But Dragonhaven is written in the slangy, talky patter of its contemporary teenage narrator, Jake Mendoza. And she really does keep it up the whole way through.

I did eventually grow to like it (McKinley is a wonderful writer, after all, even if this isn't her usual style), but the depth and beauty of the story seems to peek through the clutter of language, rather than channel directly to the reader through the written word. Jake narrates like somebody who is talking a mile a minute and can't stop to catch his breath, let alone go back through to edit and clarify.

The story falls into the popular urban fantasy genre - a recognizable world of today that is subtly skewed by the addition of some fantastical element, in this case the existence of dragons. Jake lives on the only dragon preserve in America, at an institute in the park dedicated to the study of dragons. One day, seemingly by chance, he finds a dragon dying in the woods - a mother dragon killed by a poacher just as she was giving birth. All but one of her baby dragons are dead, as is the man who killed her. Jake, still trying to cope with the loss of his own mother, looks into the dragon's eye as she is dying and is so moved by what he sees there that he decides to do what he can to save the last of the dragon's litter.

The rest of the book is about raising a baby dragon. It's about the bureaucratic mess caused at the park by the death of the poacher, and the practical and philosophical consequences of Jake's determination to save the baby dragon. It's the kind of story that would be impossibly dull if it weren't so magical, and in this case the breathless pace of the narration counterbalances the steady, grim menace of the government and the long, slow struggle to keep the baby dragon alive. It always feels like a lot is happening, like events are just galloping by, even though there's no real action to speak of.

Things definitely get strange when it comes time for the baby dragon to meet her own kind, but that part of the story is too much fun to spoil.

I really enjoyed Dragonhaven, but it didn't move me the way that some of McKinley's other books have (The Blue Sword, Beauty, Sunshine). I'd give it three and a half stars if I could, and I'm rounding up out of a sense of loyalty.
