"You can't say no, Mr. Griffen," Etienne said. "Destiny's waitin' for you."

"Not my destiny," Griffen protested. "Just because you dreamed something doesn't mean it's going to come true. I don't have to follow what you think you know. The future's malleable."

"Not so much as you tink it is," Etienne replied with an assurance that roused ire in Griffen.

"Why should I do it?" he demanded.

"To stop fate," the werewolf said simply. "The bad things dat will come if you don't. You a good man. You wouldn't let anything happen to this city. You've made yourself at home here. New Orleans has welcomed you, son. You bring people together in a good way. You gotta keep on doin' it, and the Krewe of Fafnir's part of it." He grasped Griffen's forearm and looked into his eyes as if searching for something. "Come on along on Tuesday evenin'. Meet the department heads. Don't say no now. What do you tink?"

Griffen gave one more good look at the roaring dragon head in the corner. Its eyes seemed to glitter at him.

"I'll think about it," he said.

He had to get out of there before he agreed to the offer. It was too tempting. If there was anything he had learned in the last few months, it was to go over the details and ask questions, and more questions, before saying yes. He'd been guilty of rash behavior that had hurt him and the people who loved or trusted him—or both. He turned to leave.

In the wide doorway, a broad silhouette stood between him and the outside. Griffen recognized the shape of a man who might have been mistaken for a big-boned, muscular and somewhat overweight biker. His heart sank as the figure swaggered toward him.

"You thinking of running a krewe, on top of everything?" Lieutenant Harrison asked, his broad face skeptical.

Matters were still not perfect between Griffen and Harrison, not since the masquerade ball at the end of the conclave in October. The New Orleans detective had learned about Griffen's secret in the course of his investigation of a crime. They'd gotten along so well before that. Griffen had thought they had formed a cooperative bond that would do them both good, but he had left out one little detail, that he was a dragon. He had believed that he could keep the truth about his heritage hidden, but it had all come out in a completely disastrous way.

Most humans were going to be freaked out about learning that heretofore mythical creatures existed, let alone living anonymously side by side with them, but when someone trusted you, and you didn't let them in on that little secret, "Oh, by the way, I'm a hereditary dragon, and so is my sister. There's a bunch of us around town. We're generally not a problem, but you have to look out for the vampires, werewolves, fairies, shapeshifters, selkies and others who are here, too." To the man who is trying to enforce law and order with no more than his wits, some martial arts training and standard police issue weaponry, the world is going to seem like a much scarier place. Griffen had pulled the figurative rug out from under him and rendered him less effective at his job. Harrison was finding it hard to forgive the omission. Griffen did not blame him; he blamed himself. He had been avoiding Harrison until he could figure out a way to make it up to him. Simple explanations were out of the question. A full disclosure, over a really good meal and drinks, with time for as lengthy a Q&A session as Harrison chose, plus the acknowledgement that Griffen owed him a favor, a big one, might do the trick, but Griffen had not yet felt ready to do it.

"Uh," Griffen said, lamely. "I've been asked to be king."

"Good idea," Harrison said, with a nod. "Make you fit in better, especially if you are reviving a dormant krewe. Tradition means a lot around here. We've got more of it than you folks from up north."

"I'm considering it," Griffen said, determined to be honest with Harrison. "I'm not sure I have the manpower to cover the responsibilities I would have. I was spread too thin…" He had started to mention the convention. Harrison stiffened, but Griffen didn't have a choice except to continue in that painful vein, "over Halloween, and I don't want to screw up something as important as Mardi Gras."

"Good that you're taking the time to think something through," Harrison said grimly. "You got all the permits?"

"Yes, sir," Etienne said.

"You have a theme worked up yet?" Harrison scanned the room, taking in the half-finished floats with an experienced eye.

"It's a secret, lieutenant," the werewolf said, with a grin that was almost a leer. "But you're invited to de tableau ball. Come on aroun' and see."

Harrison echoed the grin, which looked no less feral than Etienne's. "I'll do that, if only to look at this guy in his king costume."

Griffen was alarmed. "Uh, no. I'm not even sure I'm going to do it."

Harrison's face changed from grim to shrewd skepticism. "Oh, you'll do it, McCandles. I know you—or I thought I did."

Unfortunate
By Shazam
The third book in Robert Aspirin's Dragon series. It was completed by regular collaborator Jody Lynn Nye. Ms Nye worked with Mr. Aspirin on a number of his MYTH series books so is familiar with the author's style.

The Dragon series was a wonderful return to Mr. Aspirin's writing style. There were many elements it shared with the early Myth books in fact. The inexperienced and often in over his head protagonist who attracts a bevy of highly capable compatriots while somehow ending up in a position of leadership. In this case, he has more talent of his own but its still a familiar theme for fans of Mr. Aspirin's early works.

In recent decades, most of Mr. Aspirin's works had been co-written with, many people would say primarily written by, other authors. This was due possibly to financial issues, but also to a very long and noted writers block. What made the first two books so wonderful is they were written by Mr. Aspirin alone, the first such books in many years.

The third book was released after his death. Its unclear how much of the book was completed prior to his death, but there are numerous ways the third book fails to follow the first two. First, the characterizations of some of the characters of the book aren't consistent with the earlier two books. In one case, his assistant Jerome, is said to only now be forgiving having been passed over for leadership by the protagonist. In the first two books there was never such tension, in fact Jerome was core to recruiting the protagonist and was clear he was excited to throw in his lot and ride his coat tails given perceived future opportunities. Similarly, the asian girlfriend who returns to the protagonist did so in part bringing a secret offer of allegiance from the younger generation of Asian dragons, while pretending to still serve the elder Asian dragons. In the third book, this subplot is apparently completely forgotten and she's serving the elders only.

There are other examples, but generally it feels like the book perhaps had a general storyline, and Ms Nye scanned over the earlier two books without paying that much attention to them and tried to write a book around that storyline. It no longer feels like Mr. Aspirin's prose and the characters don't really feel quite like his characters. As a book in its own right its a fun read and I would have scored it higher, but as the final book in Mr. Aspirin's last hurrah as a solo author before his untimely demise, it probably shouldn't have been written.

The last of the series?
By Kelly
The third Dragon book is in my opinion the weakest of the three. The first two Asprin wrote alone, but his death 2 1/2 years before publication of this installment led to a co-writer in Ms. Nye, who he has worked with before on his MYTH series. Perhaps she was brought in on an unfinished manuscript. If so, she had a tough assignment.

Griffin Mc Candles is still running a small gambling operation in New Orleans, predominantly Texas Hold 'em, though in an instance or two it seemed the game ran slightly different from standard, especially with "turn and burn" cards. Knowing the game at least somewhat would help, as this book places the players at the tables far more often than the first books, especially Griffin.

Most of the book, especially the early part, runs well enough, though it does not seem to be coming to a point very fast, then it almost all collapses in - except in one major point, leading to hints there will have to be at least one more volume. It lost the flow, leading to the loss of a star and a half from a 4 star. Also, some inconsistency (Gris-Gris' uncle either changed names, or he has 2 uncles waiting tables at the same restaurant, the one we always saw, and this one) and some remarks about Homeland Security and their fictional agents in this book seem to be a writer's personal opinions thrust needlessly into the novel, lessening it.

My advice would be to see if a fourth volume emerges. If it does, and it is well reviewed, I would say buy both books, as plotlines DO continue and evolve in this book, but if not, I would skip this one. None of the major lines conclude here.

fun fantasy frolic
By A Customer
Obtaining his business degree, Griffen McCandles accompanied by his sister Val preferred to not choose sides in the magical war. Instead the near purebreds fled from his Uncle Mal for New Orleans (see Dragons Wild) where he felt his Dragons Luck should prove lucrative. He quickly became owner of a gambling operation and a leader of the local dragon society.

In fact he has moved up so fast that the Krewe of Fafnir-dragon society selects him to serve as the king of the Mardi Gras parade. He has mixed feelings about leading the parade, but the honor is too big of a thrill for him to ignore as his ego is ready to explode with pride. However, he may have crapped out as fuming dragons loathe the newcomer's rise, which means he clawed them out of the way. They form a cartel to bankrupt his casino and other businesses. His superego blinds him to the internal threat until an employee is killed leading to NOPD Detective Harrison investigating and Griff realizing the raging dragon fire could destroy him, his sister, their friends and their adopted city as all hail the king but some want to hail a new ruler.

This is an enjoyable lighthearted entry in the Griffen McCandles urban fantasy as the lead character's ego gets out of control with the honors bestowed on him so he fails to see the danger from jokers within. Not as humorous as Robert Asprin, who died in 2008, was known for in his tales, Jody Lynn Nye has taken control of the series. Griffen continues his coming of age growth; finally he understanding that with great power comes great responsibility and as his business degree reminds him also great accountability. With a wild family affair final twist setting up the next thriller, Dragons Deal is a fun fantasy frolic.
